Tennessee Titans Daily Links: Fixing The Pass Rush Edition
We covered it somewhat on MCM Radio last night, but it's worth another mention: The Titans added Keith Millard as an assistant coach/pass rush specialist. Millard, who had a stellar career as a pass rushing DT, will help all levels of the defense develop better techniques for rushing the passer. This could be a big addition for the defense, since they struggled mightily to bring consistent pressure in 2011. Rushing the passer is an essential part of any good NFL defense, so bringing in a guy who specialized in coaching that skill makes a lot of sense.
Ruston Webster and the Titans' scouts are getting a good look at some of this year's top draft prospects at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Another thing Jimmy and I discussed last night: Should the Titans pony up for Mario Williams if the Texans let him walk? It'll take a pretty big contract to get Williams signed, but I don't see anyone else in FA or the draft that could come close to making the instant impact Williams could make on this defensive line. I doubt we do it, but I'd love for it to work out.
Speaking of potential free agents, the Falcons are expected by many observers to let Brent Grimes walk because they're already spending big at the CB spot thanks to Dunta Robinson.
Jeff Fisher has settled on Brian Schottenheimer as his offensive coordinator, which means Dowell Loggains is pretty much a lock to stay in Tennessee.
FO takes stock of the Super Bowl match-up, and dissects he differences between these teams, and the Giants/Patriots teams that met in the Super Bowl four years ago.
Not Titans related, but I thought this was the most interesting NFL story I saw this morning: it turns out that Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff was late getting on the field because the scoreboard in Gillette Stadium was behind by one down, so Cundiff thought it was third down. Classic Bilicheat!

I would love to get Williams...
But agree that someone is going to give him a pretty penny, and that is unlikely to be us.

Mario has ended up on IR the last 2 season, so that has to put a pretty big dent into his potential contract. I certainly wouldn’t expect Hanyesworth type of insane money.
But still, he is going to get $10-12M/yr pretty easily.
but a lot thinner

I guess I've underestimated just how anal some kickers are with their routine.
I understand having different preperations for different kicks, and I get being rushed. But come on? A 30 yard field goal. I mean I know there are no “gimmies”, but those are pretty close for most kickers, no matter what down. I do feel bad for the guy. And I’m sure there is some truth to how his routine threw him off, but it comes off to me like Baltimore’s scapegoat is looking for a scapegoat of his own. I can’t blame him though. I probably would too.

Whilst I agree its a need, Pass Rush wasn't something we harped on constantly over the season
It seems like since the end of the season the lack of pass rush has become a bigger focus than it was during the season. Yes our pas rush wasnt good enough, but it was more inconsistant than bad. There were games where we got good rush and games where we got no rush at all. Thats why I’m not so sure we will be going pass rush in the first round of the draft, we have a young d line I think the front office will give them time to develop and maybe add a free agent to complement them like we have done in recent years. I see us going with Mark Barron, Ideally we would take DeCastro but there is NO WAY he reaches us, I don’t think I’ve seen him mocked lower than 14-17 in a draft in the last month. There are about 5 teams in front of us with a need at guard and we dont have much to trade with.
I watch the Music City Miracle every time I visit MCM just because I can
If a D-line coach in the NFL can' coach
pass rush techniques he probably should not be D-line coach. What’s next a new asst to teach the O-line how to run block?

This is off the subject...but...
isn’t it funny how much power the words that we speak actually have? When asked about retirement, Joe Pa said, “Retire?…heck, I’d croak in a week”. Same situation with Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes fame. The reason?…it’s because our subconscious mind can’t take a joke. It doesn’t know we kidding, it takes whatever comes out of our mouth as truth…and then begins to set the wheels in motion to accomplish whatever that is. The moral of the story? Let’s keep everything that comes out of our mouth POSITIVE!! If you catch yourself “cursing” yourself…STOP IT!!

If Williams hits FA, please go after him.
It’d take a nice chunk of coin, but I’ll be damned if the dude isn’t great as a DE and a complete athletic monster to boot.
Torn pectoral aside, naturally.
