Might be moving to Nashville in about 6 Months
Well I'm almost all graduated and I'm trying to get life all figured out. I'm looking at maybe moving down to Nashville. Can anybody direct me towards some fairly cheap housing?
Maybe some links to some things that would be helpful?
I'm tired of living up north here, where it's winter 9 months out of the year. The cold is overrated. Snow is only cool when you don't have to shovel it and can afford to heat your house.
Anything helpful is appreciated.

Just think…now you’ll be able to see ALL of the home games. I am not envious…I am not envious…I am not envious. Maybe if I say it enough, I’ll actually believe it…:-)

Admit it, you're moving just to see the Titans

You moving as part of your career?
Or are you just trying to get out of the north? You want the urban city living, or would you mind something a little outside the city?
It's a little bit of both
I’d like to do some photo editing work, as I’m pretty versed in Photoshop and the likes.
I’d prefer to be in the city where I wouldn’t have to much driving (as I’m a small town guy with little big city driving experience. Chaos makes me nervous.) and could walk around…

OK, here's an attempt to meet those criteria.
You want in the city, able to walk to stuff, AND cheap. Those can be hard shoes to fill, but here are the neighborhoods I would recommend:
East Nashville: Older part of town, most of the houses were built in the 1920s or 1930s. Had been run-down for a while, has made a huge comeback since the stadium was built (this is the area where the Titans stadium is). Lots of cool indy bars and restaurants. Depending on exactly where you are and how far you want to walk, you may also be able to walk to the Titans stadium or downtown.
12th Ave South: Much like East Nashville, but on the south side of downtown, not quite as big, hasn’t gentrified quite as much, but also never fell quite as far to start with. 12th Ave itself has a number of bars and restaurants, it’s also within walking distance of the Belmont University area. Speaking of that…
Belmont Blvd: There are 2 colleges on this road, Belmont University and David Lipscomb University. Therefore, there are a bunch of bars, restaurants, and coffeeshops. Jimmy works at Belmont. A former Top Chef contestant has 2 places side-by-side on this road. (And his parents have a super-cheap but quite good Oriental food cafeteria and market across the street).
The upside: All of these neighborhoods have a number of independent, locally owned places to eat, drink, shop, and listen to music within walking distance. All of them are within 3 or 4 miles of downtown and near interstates if you don’t happen to work downtown. While they are all gentrified or gentrifying, they do all have cheap living options available.
The downside: The cheap living options are cheap because they are in disrepair and/or near the projects (East side and 12th Ave S) or because they cater to college students (Belmont). The nicer places, closer to the center of these districts, are now much more expensive than they once were.
The other downside: All of the places for rent in these areas are rental houses or houses that have been turned into apartments. No apartment complexes, so websites like apartments.com don’t list. Your best bet is to troll Craigslist and respond to openings, there’s no centralized listing site for them that I am aware of.
Also, when exactly are you coming to town?
I happen to live with 2 roommates in a rental house in the 12th Ave S area.
I’m getting married and moving in with my fiancee’ in October, and my roommates will need someone to take my spot.
Oh wow. That's awesome.
Thanks for all the effort. I graduate here in July, I believe. Then I’ve got the process of moving all my stuff to some sort of storage and figuring out my next move. Depending on how things play out, I may or may not be there in August.

Follow up to this...
12South and East Nashville both have areas that are walkable, especially if as hartley says you’re looking for a nearby bar or restaurant. However, you’ll still have to do a fair amount of driving even for routine things like going to the grocery store (I went to Belmont and there’s no good grocery option in that area, but about a half-mile away is a Kroger).
I’m a city guy myself so want to live right downtown (the Gulch is an awesome place but very pricey), but even then would have to have my car to do a lot of stuff because downtown proper doesn’t have a lot of those amenities like a grocery store. Public transportation in Nashville exists in the form of buses, but the system is kinda flawed and can be tricky.
Worst part of Nashville driving honestly is just the other people, they’re stupid down here and it’s more about watching out for them. Interstates are the worst so if you live in any of the areas hartley mentions, you can get to know the side streets and take those instead to avoid interstate traffic.

You Nashville veteran
Whats the deal with Cummings Station? Do trains still run through there? This is coming from a dude that grew up in the middle of nowhere and making a trip to M’boro was considered going to a “big” town. Therefore I don’t know shit about much other than Broadway.
Cummins Station is a trendy place to have an office now.
Has been for a while to my knowledge, been an office building for a while. As for trains in the Gulch…not sure, pretty sure they still pass through but there’s not like passenger service or anything.

Yeah, I was assuming Justin mostly wanted to walk to dining & entertainment.
A car is very much a necessity in this town, you’ll need it to go to the grocery store, or the movies, or the mall, or to work. Unless you want to live your life according to the whims of our less-than-stellar public transportation system.
(Although, Ron, I did think the Harris Teeter at the corner of 21st & Blair would be walkable from Belmont).
Yeah that's understandable
I just enjoy walking and am not a fan of driving with a bunch of crazies on the road. Thanks for all the info. It’s given me a lot to think about and look up!

No its not, you just have to learn to take pride in it.

Pride smide
When you’re broke and have no money to enjoy the sports you can do in it and don’t have the money to heat your house it’s awful. I’ve been shoveling snow for over 17 years. I’m over it.

In Nashville?
I lost my car to that storm, was literally ten feet away from the church parking lot I was going to leave my car in and walk to my house…ended up sliding right into a ditch with my car nearly vertical. Did make the news though, ha.

The best part about Tennessee is ....
(other than Titans games) Sweet Tea. Not like tea that people claim is sweet but really isn’t, here in Tennessee, sweet tea means it’s legit sweet tea. Pure sugary goodness.

The best Sweet Tea I've ever had was from this hole-in-the-wall place in Columbia, South Carolina. God, that was good.
Here in the metro DC area, “meh” is how I’d generously describe the sweet tea.
