PrintLast night we recapped the game against the Titans and the late games that did not go the way the Titans needed to make the playoffs. We also did a pretty quick overview of the offense as a whole from the 2012 season. We both came to the conclusion that the Titans absolutely need to add a playmaking wide receiver in free agency. I don't think they will, but they should.
We also talked about how the interior of the offensive line should look completely different than it did this year. I think Mike Munchak did a nice job this season considering all of the obstacles he was facing with the quarterback situation and the lockout, but I will start a website called FireMikeMunchak.com if we do not have two new guards when the 2012 season starts.

For me, it's not a two new guards or fire Munchak kind of offseason.
For one, that’s Reinfeldt’s territory, not Munchak’s. I wouldn’t be surprised if Reinfieldt is calling the majority of the roster move shots with some input from the coaching staff.
I’m also okay with keeping one guard if we replace the Center, too. I’d like an entirely new interior offensive line, but that may be asking a little much. If we sign a veteran for one position, then use our first round pick and draft a day 1 starter for a 2nd, I’m happy. 4 good lineman can go a long way toward covering up a poor 5th one.

The other thing we have to think about is how many 1 year contracts are about to expire.
We may not have the resources to go after good OL free agents after putting the team together.

The last thing we need is a WR.
For the first time in a long time, WR’s are not the problems. It’s called getting an offensive line that can pass block longer than 1 second for plays to develop and run block so that CJ can do his thing and take pressure off the passing game. Kenny Britt, Jared Cook, All-State, and Damian Williams are more than capable. Where bud needs to spend his money is on the defense. Our offense was the least of our problems this year. Time after time we were gashed for long runs or giving up 3rd and over ten yards every game. We need the little money that Bud is going to spend on a pass rush and on a couple safties.
Getting a WR in free agency is flat out dumb.

While I sympathize
With the emotion, can’t agree with some of the content:
- An added WR certainly wouldn’t be the “last” thing we need. If you made a list by position starting at the top with things we least need and working your way down, probably Quarterback and Kicker are going to be right at the top. It’s arguable, but I think Cornerback would be higher on that list (less needed) than a WR. I feel like our depth at WR is more shallow than corner, and Jared is a TE (kinda).
- If they keep the same Oline, it will be Munchak that is responsible, not Adams. Adams is going to do what the coaching staff recommends with regards to that position. The Oline is Munchak and Matthews baby. No way does Adams countermand what they want to do with it.
- I do agree that Oline is much more important to “get better”, however they do it. than the WR position. But depending on the situation, adding a reliable route runner in FA and dropping one of our more inconsistent guys would not be “dumb”.
You are going to ignore the Elephant in the room?
Our pass rush was awful all year long, as it has been for the last 3 years. When has our WR depth been better in this decade? Kenny Britt, Nate Washington and Damian Williams are the best 3 WR’s we have had since Mason and Bennett were here with Dyson. Cook is a monster when he can get the ball. We have depth with Hawkins, who vastly improved this year, and Avery if we keep him. That sounds like depth to me.
Our run blocking and pass blocking were straight pitiful to watch. We have a top 3 running back in the NFL that was hated on all year because our line couldnt block to save their lives or their jobs.
The only other place our money needs to be spent other than O-line is on defense.

I with regard to our offense being “the least of our problems”, I would say that is factually incorrect. Both the offense and defense were mediocre-poor. They ended ranked 17th in offense and 18th in defense. Both units were very inconsistent, and capable of entirely not showing up for games.

Thats how bad our o-line is. We have a top 3 running back and no run game and we still finished middle of the pack in offensive stats.

If he hadnt have signed that deal and still had the same season you would have been all over the offensive line just as i am. But since he signed it its his fault he has no blocking. He is probably going to say i did, but in reality i said its not all CJ's fault when he has no blocking
To ignore the fact we have one of not the worst lines in the nfls is ignorant. He is just putting all his rage on the one that gets paid for it which is CJ. I’ll admit there where times he should have got the first down instead of making another cut but when he gets hit behind the line of scrimmage 80 percent of his runs it really leans on the o-line at that point.

It's nice looking for a second to have a 9-7 winning record ... yay Munch blablablah...
but when it comes down to it we only beat ONE good team this year (1.5 if you count yesterday), missed the playoffs and we’re picking 20th in the draft where we’ll be very fortunate to draft an impact player.
While we are headed in the right direction, we still need some significant changes in our personnel and/or schemes to become anything close to elite. It’s all fine and dandy that we can rack up an automatic 6-10 automatic every season against the dregs of the NFL (and being unbelievably lucky in the rotation of the NFC division we play) but if we have to be able to beat teams like Pittsburgh, Baltimore, San Diego and New England to even make it to another AFC Championship. In the past 5-6 years I’m willing to bet our success rate against elite teams has been way under .500 and this season we showed little competition with them as well.
My point is that the Titans need to remain aggressive in the reformation project that started a year ago. We still have a long ways to go.

au contraire. just off the top of my head, CJ, Britt, Hakeem Nicks, LeSean McCoy, Andy Dalton, Brooks Reed, Torrey Smith, Dez Bryant, Jermaine Gresham, Jahvid Best, there are SO many great players who make an impact early on that are drafted past the 20th pick.

you misunderstood the sentiment ..... any team that drafts an impact player in any round is fortunate ...
I did not say it’s very unlikely we will draft an impact player at 20 …
Drafting a player late in the first round that has the talent to come in and transform a team on either side of the ball is rare … thus the fortune.

I see what you mean. I’m not dissatisfied with the draft position though, if there are that many guys just off the top of my head that have had a serious impact on their teams while being drafted later in the first round/earlier in the second round then I think we’ll be fine. I trust Mike to find an impact guy.

After last year's draft I would trust Reinfeldt to find us the best player avail for our team at #20...
but I’m not familiar enough with this year’s draft crop to say whether or not a game-changing guy will be there for us…. I’m talking like Jevon Kearse kinda game changing. Not necessarily a DE but someone that gives the team more identity. I feel like the Titans always need a player that will incite literal fear into our opponents … that was always a huge part of our persona (IMO) and we haven’t had that since Haynesworth left.

on this year’s draft class: it’s deep. reallllly deep. I wouldn’t mind Courtney Upshaw from Bama. that’s a nasty linebacker corp if I ever saw one: Spoon and McCarthy on the inside, Ayers and Upshaw on the outside. I’m not sure how realistic it is but I really want Casey to step into that role of intimidator.
