Shaun Smith came to Nashville with big aspirations of being the latest in a long line of free agents who took their career to the next level here, but instead he was largely disappointed by his own play. Rather than hang his head all offseason about it, Smith is vowing to redouble his efforts to getting his weight down (which even he admits was out of control later in the season), and learning more about Jerry Gray and Tracy Rocker's D-line schemes.
If there weren't papers to sell and web pages to be hit, the concept of cutting Chris Johnson would have gotten play for about 2 days a few months ago. Even that would've been laughably more attention than the idea deserves.

With so much attention being placed on Rudd...
we didn’t really talk that much about Shaun Smith. But he definitely shouldn’t feel like the Lone Ranger. If we could ever get to a point where our FA pick ups pan out as well as our draft selections…we’d be in high cotton!!

at least smith played well early on
he just fell off as he swelled up. If you go back and look at pics of him in Kansas City, and to a lesser extent in camp this preseason, compared to the end of this season, the difference is noticeable.

With Ruud, obviously a short-term thing considering it was a one-year deal.
McCarthy just came on much sooner than expected methinks. Smith, I think he got a three-year deal so pretty sure expectations were for him to be a bigger part of the line/rotation than he ended up being.

Smith was a disappointment obviously
But I can’t say I don’t have a new respect for the man when he’s showing an attitude like that. At least he’s (ostensibly) willing to work to be a better player. I hope he follows through on that promise so he can have a good year next season, it’d be helpful for us and rewarding for him, I think.
