Next year…open it up more. Like to see CJ on the outside more. Plus, some more creative plays called. Reverses, options, wildcats, flea flickers…you get the idea.

Passing game was fun, but that's not the strength of this team.
Palmer has not gotten nearly enough blame for the running game’s struggles. A lot of it is on CJ, but none of these guys forgot how to play. Palmer’s new scheme simply didn’t fit well enough into what they have proven they know how to do, and they never got things turned around. That starts with Palmer. He and the rest of the staff did an excellent job of dealing with a weak receiving corps (and even making me sort of excited about them in the future) but you’ve got to be able to take better advantage of the great players you have – after all, failing to do that is a big part of what got Fisher canned.
It's hard to say it's not the strength anymore
this is a much different team and we have some big receiving weapons. Cook, Britt, Washington, Williams.
This team is changing, just like the rest of the NFL. Give CJ a good line and we’re in some serious business.

The passing game is absolutely the strength of this team.

It turned out to be, but that should not have been the case. A receiving corps whose best weapons after (an admittedly stellar Nate Washington) are Williams and Hawkins should not be getting 65% of the plays. Cook certainly came on, but the last three games made everybody forget that he was very mediocre early on. There is no other way to say it but this: there were too many games that were close when they shouldn’t have been, and the Saints game got out of hand because of Palmer’s unwillingness and inability to run the ball. I appreciate what he did with Hasselbeck, but he has to carry some of the responsibility for utterly failing to get the running game to a passable level.

I think everyone involved in the running game bares some of the responsibility
the sooner we figured out we needed to almost completely abandon the run our team started doing quit better. It seemed like we were running the ball there for a while to meet a quota of 20 rushes a game… even when it was completely not working.

The Saint's game???
I think that’s about one of the better gameplans of the season (possibly because Locker was beast mode) the unwillingness to run in that case stems from the lame run game all season, and that was a winnable game in hindsight, I think we should continue to strengthen the pass while fortifying the run game, because that is what we do, but the improvement is something we as fans really should have wanted, our offense can work even with Williams and Hawkins as the wideouts if everyone produces to their potential

I understand what you’re saying, but we were down something like 6 in the middle of the 3rd quarter. We had kept it from being a track meet, and that was our best chance. It makes no sense to abandon the run like we did (I may be misremembering, but I don’t think Johnson had a single carry in the 3rd), especially with a rookie QB. Locker did a helluva job in that game to make it interesting, but if you really think letting him throw 3x more than CJ had carries was the most likely recipe for success, we’re just going to have to disagree about that one. (29 passes for Locker, 7 for Hasselbeck, compared to 11 carries for Johnson).

I was impressed with his work, much more than I thought I'd be at the start of the year.
Passing for the most yards since 2005 was a big point on the resumé for me. Running game tailed off, but I’ll give him one more year with a better o-line and/or a RB who actually reads plays before I call him out for it.

I was on the approve side of 'meh'
Given all the things we had going against us going into the season, I don’t think anyone would’ve guess that our rushing would’ve imploded this season – Palmer included – and that passing would’ve been our strength. With that, and given that he was able to do some creative and effective stuff with the passing attack, I’m more inclined to vote in favor. After a full offseason and if Chris Johnson is not back up to par or, at the very least, more involved creatively, my lenience will have all but vaporized.

I like somethings he did with our passing game. For he was part of the reason
our 3 time pro bowler and 2000 yard rusher had such a poor season. I feel like any competent OC would make better use of CJ.
Lemme See Your HANDS!
I don't understand the hate towards him.
All things considered I thought he did a good job, and for this offense to still be able to move the ball without their supposed biggest threat doing anything, and the top WR out. I also liked how he shifted guys around to try to exploit mismatches.
Give him an offseason and let’s see what he does to fix the run game.

I swear people demand 60 yard bombs every single play or they're not happy with their OC.
And then they’d complain he doesn’t call runs!

I think people are confusing "conservative" for "smart" playcalling.
Look, the reality is without Britt we didn’t have that downfield threat, though Hands gamely stepped up and Cook got in on it later in the year. I give Palmer credit for recognizing that and calling plays that maximized the talent that he did have. And with the run game, we can blame a whole host of people for its failures.
I give credit to him for doing what he did with the talent that he did with no offseason. Was I completely happy? No, there were times I was annoyed with the play call, but all in all I think he was smart with what he did.

Good point, the With-Britt offense was much more aggressive and explosive than the No-Britt offense.
It’ll be interesting to see what Palmer would call if we had more than one legitimate receiving threat.

It seems like people are letting the faults of players and execution fall on the OC shoulders
which is not right.
Were some of play calls questionable? Sure.
But a 1,000 yard receiver and first 3,000+ yard passer since the Great #9… I’d say he did a pretty damn good job with the cards that were infront of him.

He made the best of what he had. Next year will be there true test of his coordinating abilities with a full offseason.
Wholeheartedly agree.

Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! Houston is just lucky the AFC south sucked so bad this year.
If we can produce this sort of level in the passing game every year
Have the same dominance in the run game like we used to
and get CJ more involved in the passing game (it’s possible he DID play wideout in college for a while) we may become the NO Saints of the AFC, a balanced yet powerful offense

Well, not exactly.
Same 5 linemen, same FB, same RB. Different OC, entirely different running team. He switched to a zone-blocking scheme, and it didn’t work. Maybe it will with a full offseason (in theory, it makes sense to me that Johnson would benefit from that. But it may be that he’s lost half a step and can no longer create from that setup like he might have been able to a year ago.) But here’s the thing: When CJ was great, he was “patient.” When he was struggling, he was “indecisive.” It’s the same style, and the surrounding situation is what makes it work or not. There were also just too many games where CJ never had a chance to get in rhythm. After every decent carry, they pulled him (Fisher erred on the other side, never giving him a breather. But these guys were afraid to let him have it twice in a row if he got past the line of scrimmage). I don’t think he “made” CJ worse, but I don’t think the change in scheme worked, and I think they abandoned the run in games where we needed to keep it close. It’s one play, but the very worst play of the season was giving it to Hall in the Houston game. No matter how else you feel about CJ, at least he doesn’t drop the ball – and I seriously wanted to decapitate Palmer until the snap went over Delhomme’s head.
Hopefully this is more intelligent than “BECUZ HE M8D CJ SUXZZ!!11” even if the sentiment is more or less the same.
by gold_blooded on Jan 11, 2012 4:54 PM CST up reply actions
Basically you said, BECUZ HE M8D CJ SUXZZ!!!1
He is a bad coordinator because a RB couldn’t get it going…? CJ still finished with a 1,000 yard season, so one way or another Palmer was doing something right. Palmer’s job as a coordinator isn’t to make sure CJ gets his yards, it’s to call offensive plays. He can not make the line block better, or make CJ less indecisive, or have untalented receivers catch footballs, or QB’s epic brain farts… etc.
He got creative (significantly more so then previous years) with our playmakers, presented miss-matches with Cook and CJ in the passing game, and we had our first 3000+ yard passing season in over a decade… all with barely any offseason.
Plus, Locker is looking to be progressing into an amazing QB while under Palmer.
What should he done more of? Made CJ not suck? Who gives a shit about CJ? I am more proud of the offense as a whole then one made getting his yards.

whoops, that monster of a post was supposed to be a reply to you. sorry.

Everybody wants to praise him for what he did with Cook, but Cook was great for exactly 3 weeks. I am really glad to have seen him turn a corner, but you can’t say that the OC isn’t responsible for the individual performances of players and then give Palmer the credit there. If it was all scheme, Cookie would’ve been much better much earlier. There was no consistency at all in his success. I agree that he can’t make the OL better. But the same guys did fine (not great, but passable) last year – though in Palmer’s defense Jake Scott aged about 15 years in the offseason and was atrocious. I’m not saying the running game should take priority over the passing game, and I’ve been as vocal as anybody against the 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offense over the years. But if you’re saying there was no reason to try to change things around to make the running game look more like last year, you’re nuts. The passing game showed enormous improvement, but we’ve known for years what the running game could do. There’s no reason this has to be a zero-sum game. Why should a 3000 yard passing season make him any more worthy of an “approve” vote than if CJ had run for 1600? If he gets both going next year, I’ll hop right on over to the 2012 “approve” side. But the question is whether I approve of the job he did this year, and the answer is no: the passing game by itself was not good enough to make the playoffs, and if the running game had been even 60% of its usual self (not just yards, but impact in the game), I believe we’d have been there. It’s certainly not all on Palmer, and I’m not trying to argue that it is. But he’s not blameless, and keeping the running game average should have been the easy part. Thus: disapprove.
I don't think anyone is saying Palmer was defined because of Cook
Cook was no-existent for 2/3rds of the season, but again… who’s fault is that? Cook for getting opportunities and blowing them? or him finally realizing what his potential and light finally turning on for him?
I can understand a knock for his running scheme and how it doesn’t translate well for our current personnel, but I would say the increase in our passing game offsets those negatives… especially without having our best WR on the field.
As I said above, CJ still had a 1,000 yard season… while not good by his standards, it’s still considered a success for a RB.
All that being said, passing offense hitting an decade high without our #1 WR and our Ultimate RB who never could get it going behind a line that was getting crushed week in and week out still mustering a 1000 yard season, we still produced good game plans. A lot of people are putting the failures of personnel on the OC shoulders.

they said that before each game Palmer and all 3 qbs would get together
and plan out what would attack the defense the most.
in the jags game it was the deep cross to cook.
so its on our qbs as well

a lot of our players get better and it will show volumes next year when we put Locker and Britt into the equation! We got a lot of production out of players that did close to nothing last year! Honestly I think we only need to address the offensive line in free agency as far as offense goes!
