Offseason Open Thread

With things slowing down around here some, I thought a good, central open thread would be useful. Use this thread as a spot to discuss really anything. NFL Draft. Jake Locker's development. NFL Playoffs. Or, any (within reason) off topic subjects.

Maybe you've got an opinion that's longwinded, but not long enough to warrant a fan post. Post it here.

If this is something you'd all like to keep up, rec it to the top. If/when the thread gets too full, we'll get another open thread up....

Did you watch the whole season?

I thought it got better from the midpoint on. Too much going on I think to condense to a show. HBO has to fill it’s gratuitous nudity quota which leaves not enough time for the actual characters which is what it’s all about it.

yeah HBO is going over the top with its gratuitous nudity, with that show and Boardwalk Empire (my favorite HBO show), sometimes its just taking away from the show.

You're almost over the hump

Watching the first half of the season I could tell it was most likely gutwrenchingly boring for viewers that had no idea who anyone was. Too much back story narrative. The pace does pick up.

And all for T&A but it does become over the top when it serves no purpose other than, “ooo look what we can do on cable!” lol

Alright! I'll finish it.

It’s not that I don’t understand it, I just don’t care about anyone this far into it. I figured the objective of a TV show was to pull the viewer in early. I just think it’s a little stupid to assume everyone should read the books before viewing the show to actually understand whats going on.

So, RC Fisher of Fantasy Football Metrics has a new post up on QBs.

Check it out here.

I generally like RC’s stuff. And, I can appreciate anyone who looks to evaluate things from a purely statistical standpoint. He’s been critical of Locker from the beginning. Really, I was in the same boat too. The guy just isn’t represented well statistically. But, to get the whole picture, you’ve got to breakdown his tape.

Not really going anywhere with this, just thought the article was worth a read. Here’s what he had to say about Locker, though:

-0.096 = Jake Locker…the jury is still out. We feel pretty confident, but we’ll see. Saying Locker was a bust, was almost as heretical as saying Gabbert was in early 2011…keep that in mind before you buy the media hype here.

by SuperHorn on Jan 10, 2012 10:41 AM CST reply actions

Things like this seem ignorant to me.

There will never be a purely statistical analysis that can accurately predict success all the time. Sometimes it just seems like if you don’t have the knowledge/motivation to look at actual game tape of prospects, you just go pure statistics and bash anyone who looks at tape. The overall tone present is kind of haughty to me.

Technically, it's ignorant, as it is specifically ignoring certain things.

Still, I enjoy the perspective. It’s well thought out. Of course, it should be taken for what it is and in it’s own context.

He looks great throwing the ball.

I still have some pretty serious concerns about the mental side of things (reads, progressions, etc). It’s not that I don’t think he can do them. I just haven’t seen them yet, which is normal for a rookie. That said, those things are necessary to take that step to the upper echelon of NFL QBs.

by SuperHorn on Jan 10, 2012 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

You haven't seen them yet also because he hasn't had much of a shot at playing against real coverages.

Though against the Saints i thought he played very well, even on the mental side.

Yup. Totally agree.

Against the softer coverages, he’s had the luxury of going with the 1st/2nd read. And, the important thing to note is that he shouldn’t be faulted for that. He’s made great throws into tight windows and been very efficient. It also likely means that he’s making some pretty good judgements pre-snap.

But, to be a franchise quarterback, we’re obviously going to see more out of him. At this point, he hasn’t been in enough “normal” situations to draw any meaningful conclusions.

None of this should be taken as a negative. Just an unknown. I feel very good about our future with Locker.

Where did they get these numbers from? I guess the past article?

It looks to me like they’re desperately trying to vindicate their pre-draft assessments in one year. Apparently, Colin Kaepernick is doomed to fail, even though he didn’t play this year. What’s worse is they used his preseason performance to justify their decision. Really? That’s lazy analysis.

It's not typical analysis. It was a prognostication, and he's just updating on where every one is at at this point.

Think of it as his version of the 25-26-60 rule, only more complex. He found guys that fit his system and then posted the results last year. All his analysis is only based on college information. He’s not evolving an opinion as the prospect gives more information in the pros. So, if Locker pans out, he’ll just admit it. He’s done so regarding other prospects (DeMarco Murray) when they showed flashes in the NFL yet scored poorly in his system.

I wouldn’t judge him on just this one article. Read his other posts on the site. It’s really interesting stuff, even if polarizing.

Draft thoughts...

I know the prevailing opinion here is that we have/need to go offensive line or WR in the first round, but I just can’t see it happening. I don’t see us using a first-round pick on someone not named Blackmon or Jeffrey (Floyd is going to have too many red flags), and despite what Munchak says I can’t see them bucking history and going offensive line in the first round.

Realistically I think this comes down to defensive line, or a shocker like CB. DL makes the most sense, if there is a pass-rusher DE to be had at 20 I think you absolutely have to take him. If we can get our line better, that will help the entire defense, just look at the Giants. I know there’s the whole “Surround Locker with better talent” argument, which is valid, but I just can’t see them going OL (based on recent draft history) or WR (based on talent available at 20) in the first round.

This makes me think we are alright

Tennessee defensive tackle Jurrell Casey is one of the defensive tackles: Casey went a long way to helping the Titans transition to a new style of defensive line and it be a success. Only three players made more defensive stops in the run game from the defensive tackle spot.

That with Klug/ (hopefully but probably not JJ rotation) or Marks, I think we are great at DT and would not want to take any time away from these guys progressing for a first rounder IMO

More than that we need a true 4-3 pass rushing DE.

And those are incredibly hard to find coming out of college. Most of them are OLB/DE hybrids that could only be situational pass rushers in a 4-3.

Maybe not. That’s speculative based on some things he said last offseason (can’t seem to find the article).

I'd love to see it.

If we play a front four that looks something like: Morgan, Casey, JJ, rusher/versatile end then we would have the ability to run either a 3 or 4 man front without really changing personnel.

by TennesseeTyrants on Jan 10, 2012 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

True, I think this is what Gray is after as well

You saw a little bit of it last year when he would drop Morgan/Ball into coverage at times…

I think if you want to see what type of defense Gray is probably aiming for, then look at Wade Phillips’ defenses. Wade Phillips is a “3-4” defense guy but he has a lot of 4 man fronts mixed in. It really depends on having an outstanding pass rusher at one end and a versatile rush LB at the other end. Think of the DEs/LBs that played for the Cowboys and Texans this past year (Ware, Spencer, Barwin, Reed, etc).

So, if you’re wondering who the Titans might target in the draft from a defensive perspective, then look at versatile DE/LB types that can rush the passer and set the edge with their hand on the ground but still have the versatility to drop back in a zone coverage to cover TEs/RBs in the flats.

I think we can throw out the idea of prior draft history because from what we saw last year, we are drafting for much different reasons now.

I so desperately want an OL in the draft. DeCastro, or more likely, Glenn. Konz is a nice fit, but I feel like they want to make it work with Amano.

Regarding prior history, we’ve seen so many changes in the organization that it wouldn’t surprise me to see a first round OL. Plus, we are so desperate for linemen that we basically need an auto-starter. Going with a mid-round OL and hoping Munchak coaches him up is fine, but I wonder if that means he’ll be a backup for half the season.

I'm conflicted.

He was pretty bad in his last HC job, and honestly seems like a ‘meh’ hire. However, his work with Ryan has got to be considered a success. Plus he used lots of short and intermediate throws in Atlanta, which is probably the only chance Gabbert has to be productive.

Doesn’t really scare me, so I’m good with it. I was holding out hope they’d go with Tucker as HC, but alas, he’s staying on as DC.

There was no way they were getting the 4th downs with sweeps or misdirections. Their line got manhandled on every single one of those snaps.

Brian Schottenheimer is not returning to the Jets.

He’ll probably land an OC position, but I’d like to bring him here in some capacity. If Fisher takes Loggains, I’d bring in Schotty as QB coach.

I agree. Schotty has taken a lot of heat this year, but he still has a great track record.

I just hope that Loggains doesn’t go. Would love to have that consistency in the coaching staff just so it doesn’t hamper Locker’s growth.

by infinitystealth on Jan 11, 2012 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

What in Schottenheimer's career makes you think he is a good coach?

Is it Mark Sanchez’s lack of development?

The fact that the Jets offense is loaded with 1st round talent the last 2-3 years and yet ranked average at best?

I just do not understand this fascination with Schottenheimer…

by shawneriksmith on Jan 11, 2012 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

He was the QB coach of Drew Brees in San Diego.

I think he got the most out of Mark Sanchez, who was overrated going into his draft year.

Compare San Diego Drew Brees to New Orleans Drew Brees

Brees passer rating in SD were 76.9, 67.5, 104.8, 89.2.

Brees passer rating in NO were 96.2, 89.4, 96.2, 109.6.

Brees didn’t really start taking off until he got away from San Diego and went to New Orleans under Sean Payton.

Just being a coach of an eventual great player is not good enough for me…especially considering his recent, poor work as the Jets offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer is an average coach, at best.

by shawneriksmith on Jan 11, 2012 10:51 AM CST up reply actions

He had a hand in building Drew Brees. The evolution we saw in New Orleans can be attributed to both Sean Payton, and also the SD staff that worked with him.

Clearly if you look at his QBR in SD, the last two years show something clicked for him.

If you look at the QBs that Schottenheimer has coached

Either as QB coach or OC, then all of the QBs went on to have better years after they were no longer under Schottenheimer. Drew Brees, Chad Pennington, and Brett Favre all had below-career-average years with Schottenheimer. Add in Mark Sanchez, and I just don’t see how this guy can be considered a good coach.

The Jets offense has had 3 1st round picks on the offensive line, a 1st round TE, multiple 1st round WRs, and a 1st round #5 overall QB (and a previous HOF QB for one year), and he has been playing with a defense that is known for getting turnovers and creating short fields for its offense. And, the Jets offense has never been in top 10 for scoring.

Just having a “hand” in one QB’s hall of fame career should not make you a desired coach, especially since his recent history is just not good.

by shawneriksmith on Jan 11, 2012 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

The Favre descent was a result of him aging, not Schotty's coaching. That's not on him.

Drew Brees spoke quite highly of him, that’s a solid endorsement.

You’re only looking at the QBR for each QB and their years, but failing to recognize when each year was (ie. what type of QB he worked with). In Favre, age caught up with him. That was a mess. With Brees, he improved immensely in his final two years in SD. Just because he improved even more in New Orleans does not take away from the progression shown as a Charger. So when you say a QB like Brees got better after leaving, you’re neglecting to mention that you would expect a _ year veteran working with Sean Payton to continually improve as well, whereas Schottenheimer had Brees for years 1-4 in his professional career.

Favre had a career year the year after he left the Jets (with Minnesota)

You keep making excuses for him…having one or two stints go bad is one thing but having 3 or 4 stints go bad is another.

I think there are many other offensive coaches out there that are much better than Schottenheimer…

We shouldn’t draft a WR at all, there’s too many holes on this team to waste a first rounder on a WR. I think we elevate Michael Preston and James Kirkendoll from the Practice squad and let them battle it out with The Hawk and Donnie Avery in camp and may the best men win. I did a scouting report on MP85 and I was very impressed with him at Heidelberg. He runs good routes, has good strong hands, is a smart guy as well as a smart player but, he doesn’t possess a quick burst, and his cuts aren’t as crisp as I would like them to be

Been going for over ten years now, definitely worth it.

We’re a fun group…though personally I’m disappointed that the enthusiasm seems to have died down the past few years compared to when we first got tickets. To counter that though, we got tickets right after the Super Bowl run so the place was magical for those years after. Hopefully Locker and the young guys bring people back…and the economy turns back around. I feel like I saw a lot more opposing teams fans this season than I ever have.

Yeah that doesn't exactly worry me as far as Gabbert suddenly becoming much better.

I still contend that it doesn’t really matter who his coach is, at this point he is too damaged and showed a serious lack of instinct and pocket presence that can’t really be “coached”. Thank you, Gene, thank you for making the “right” choice at QB.

Most of what I typically listen to is rock based, both modern and classic.

That said, I can’t stop listening to The Weeknd’s mixtape’s. House of Balloons in particular keeps annoyingly getting stuck in my head. Definitely worth checking out if you like Hip Hop/R&B considering a) They are free (on The Weeknd’s website) and b) HoB has been acclaimed as album of the year by a number of different groups. Buyer beware, though, it’s pretty dirty.

I’ve also gotten into vinyl recently, which has really opened up a can of worms into older music.

Anyone looking for a new up and coming band should check out Local Natives. Their first (and only) album is excellent. Second album should drop sometime this year.

One of the things that I took away from a few of those articles.

Defensively, I want us to be more complex. Be able to throw a lot of different looks at teams, have players that can blitz and cover (like a rush ’backer), all things I think Gray wants to implement.

Offensively, I want an outside receiver to push Nate back in the slot. The article on offensive simplicity is on that rang true throughout the season for us. With the Britt loss, we had several players move up the depth chart and take on positions they weren’t equipped for.

Just looked this up and found this interesting....

Following the draft of Locker, I really dug into his college tape to get a better grip on his accuracy issues. I came to the conclusion that a lot of it was circumstantial; a product of the lack of talent around him, superior opponents, and battling through injuries. Still, in the back of my mind, I wondered how things could look with a different QB in the Huskies system.

This year Washington started sophomore Keith Price. He blew Locker’s statistics out of the water in virtually every category. His completion percentage? 66.9 (vs Locker’s 55.4 – SR/ 58.2 JR). Threw twice as many TDs. Better YPA. Well, you get the idea. Link is here.

What does this mean? Nothing, I suppose. Obviously there are a handful of things that could have been at play here, and I haven’t had an opportunity to break down Price’s tape (nor do I intend to). That said, it does raise an eyebrow for me. Take it FWIW, but I at least thought it was worth passing along.

by SuperHorn on Jan 16, 2012 1:33 PM CST reply actions

We all know Locker has accuracy issues...

the plus is, this year he definitely has looked like he’s improved in his footwork and decision making. He has taken large strides into fixing his previous problems, even though he’ll revert back to his old ways every so often, I am far less concerned about this then I was immediate post-draft.

I don't really know.

Still, though, you’d think as a Senior that Locker would have a leg up on a RS-Soph, even if he was out of a similar system.

My hunch without watching hardly any of Price play:

- Price is sounder mechanically from the waist down on short/intermediate stuff.
- O-line play improved Year over Year.
- He has returning All-Pac 12 Running back and 2nd Team All Pac 12 WR.

It’s kinda hard to draw conclusions without watching the tape. I just found the disparity between the two pretty pronounced.

That's BS.

People looked at Gabbert’s lack of success relative to the other Missouri QBs that went to the draft to form their opinion on him. Now, we’re looking at a QB who came one year later than Locker, has very similar players around him, and the same coaching staff.

I wouldn't say similar players

The offensive line was different (no shuffling around), the WRs/RBs had another year of experience in the offensive system, Price had actual TEs to throw to, and they had a younger RB to aid Polk in the run game.

Plus, I was one who didn’t necessarily look at Gabbert’s stats but did look at how he played at Missouri…even then, you could see how little pocket presence he had. I just don’t think you can coach that out of a player, similar to Kyle Boller.

Here’s a youtube video of what I mean for Gabbert (and compare it to Locker’s pocket presence):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW69HWngSdk

Jake Locker:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZchE4x7zlE

Locker steps up into the pocket, Gabbert does not.

Again, when you’re comparing across years, there’s never going to be an apples to apples example. This, however, is about as close as you’re going to get.

Here is my best compilation and comparison of the two rosters. Hard to find depth charts but I think I got all of them.

2011:
RB Chris Polk, WR Jermaine Kearse, WR James Johnson, WR Devin Aguilar, TE A. Seferian-Jenkins.
OT Senio Kelemete, OG Colin Tanigawa, C Drew Schaefer, OG Colin Porter, OT Erik Kohler.
Link.

2010:
RB Chris Polk, WR Jermaine Kearse, WR D’Andre Goodwin, WR Devin Aguilar (James Johnson on the roster, not in a starting role), TE Marlion Bennett (not sure about this, from the looks of it they didn’t use much of a TE last year).
The OL had a few different combinations, so for all the players used, see the link below. But to assemble the ‘starting’ line, I went with the person with the most starts.
OT Senio Kelemete, OG Ryan Tolar (started every game but one, at both guard positions), C Drew Schaefer, OG Colin Porter/OG Christine (started more games it looks like), RT Habben.

So Price and Locker basically had the same receivers, except Price has them 1 year later. Both had the same LT, C and RG. They differ at LG and RT. Very similar rosters.

Link from profootballreference. And I used Wiki for for some as well (line combinations).

You're forgetting the TE position

Seferian-Jenkins is an absolute stud who set all kinds of Washington records as a freshman TE receiving.

Locker had essentially no TE, in an offense that is set up to feature a TE.

So, 3 different OL with multiple shuffling and different receiving TE is a much different offense (not including the 3 WRs having an extra year together in the same offense). And, it is the OL and TE that really help a QB…with no protection and no real outlet, then Locker didn’t have much to work with.

by shawneriksmith on Jan 17, 2012 5:16 PM CST up reply actions

Excellent skimming...
2011:
RB Chris Polk, WR Jermaine Kearse, WR James Johnson, WR Devin Aguilar, TE A. Seferian-Jenkins.

The offensive line was terrible for Locker, we know that. But 3 of the 5 guys he worked with, so has Price. And you’re placing more emphasis on one tight end than the 3 receivers each had to work with. Yes, they all had an extra year under their belt, and maybe that made all the difference, but I listened for months people telling me Locker’s accuracy was just a product of the players around him. Same back, same WRs, uhh..

I'm not really familiar with UW football, but...

didn’t in Jake’s last year Sarkisian change to a pro offense. If that’s the case, Price and all those mentioned teammates had more time in that system than Jake. Not only that but they were bound to work out some of the O-line issues before this season.

The Force is with you, young SkyLocker, but you are not a Jedi... yet!

by J3G77 on Jan 17, 2012 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

I think that sounds right.

I admit Price had a better situation than Locker: receivers with more experience, better o-line, more time in the system, and Locker wasn’t a pro-style QB until his last year. All that should lead to Price’s increased production, I’m just not sure that the gap between the two should be so substantial. Accuracy, for instance, has a gap of 11%. That can’t all be on the surrounding players.

I agree that the difference is noticable by those numbers.

I wonder how many throw aways, drops, sacks and QB pressures Price had compared to Jake’s last season. We know that Jake had a high number of throw aways, as well as drops if memory serves me correct. It’d also be interesting to know whether or not they ran slightly different plays to help some of their struggles from the year before. Again, I’m not very familiar with UW. I didn’t watch a single game of theirs this season. Even if things were equal, I won’t read too much into it yet. I look at it as this is Jake’s second year in a pro offense and it’s obvious he’s made significant improvements.

I'm not sure what to think.

But looking at the stats, we also gotta remember that Locker has the threat to run, so that has got to count for something, no? It seems that Price (from the numbers) is more of a traditional QB while Locker has some versatility and mobility, though I can’t say that for sure as I haven’t seen Price play.

Also after looking online, it seems that Locker’s o-line was worst in his senior season then this year, MAYBE contributing to Price’s better numbers, but from what I’ve read from a few fans, Price is a better traditional passer, and like I mentioned, that can be seen through the stats. However, again, Locker has the threat to run.

Finally, I’ve looked into the players that Washington has this year, and it looks like Locker had NO talent around him, but Price does have one of the higher rated NFL prospects in Chris Polk, ALONG with Kasem Williams (#1 player of the nation I believe) and a TE to throw to (who were both missing in Locker’s years).

Those are just some quick facts I dug up, can’t really come to any conclusions unless you take a look at the tape, and even then, you can’t say anything cause it’s not like they played with the exact same team or changed plays or something along those lines.

True, but this is about as close as we’ll get short of QB’s alternative series in the same season.

As for the pass protection, there’s only one freshman on the O-line, and he’s a redshirt at that. So unless I’m missing some transfers, these guys were all in school last year. Unlike the NFL, O-line protection in the college ranks rarely gets decidedly better from one year to the next, as you’re typically working with the same personnel, whereas you can pick up players at the pro level. If anything, lines typically get worse with key role players graduating. I’m not dismissing this entirely (I even noted it above), but I’d wager that it’s not a dramatic difference.

Locker had the benefit of playing with Polk last year, and also Kearse. Williams only caught 36 balls for 426 yards, so he isn’t really an impact player (yet).

But looking at the stats, we also gotta remember that Locker has the threat to run, so that has got to count for something, no? It seems that Price (from the numbers) is more of a traditional QB while Locker has some versatility and mobility, though I can’t say that for sure as I haven’t seen Price play.

This is true. Problem is that we’re not using him like that, nor should we (IMO). As Gruden put it, Locker’s ability to run is a “resource, but you don’t want to abuse it.” It’s a bonus, however, at the pro level, that’s all it is. In the absence of a threatening passing attack, it isn’t useful in the long term.

Kinda got off on a tangent here. I’m still optimistic about Locker’s future. Just a little concerned about the sudden jump in production at UW…that’s all.

by SuperHorn on Jan 16, 2012 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

Regarding Locker's ability to run:

Yeah, I agree that Locker should be developed as a pass first QB with the option to run if there is no one open or to get rid of the ball out of bounds.

Maybe Locker relied too much on his running abilities in Washington? Which is why his passing numbers weren’t as strong as Price’s. It could very well be possible that Price is a better passer than Locker, but the difference in stats is a bit scary. I am still expecting a bright future for Locker.

Actually, I did catch a couple of minutes of the Washington-Baylor bowl game while helping my dad install his new T.V. and from what I can recall, the announcers did mention that Price suffered a few lower body injuries this year (knee or foot?). We can never really know how it effected him and compared to Locker’s injuries, but just wanted to point out that Price did battle injuries as well.

by infinitystealth on Jan 16, 2012 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah. Price injured his knee earlier in the year.

Based on my research, he’s a ~4.7 40 guy. Not 4.5-5.6 (Locker) speed, but still plenty athletic for a QB.

Regarding UW's offensive line

The Huskies offensive line was much, much more stable this year than in Locker’s last two years.

Here is an article discussing the difference in UW’s offensive line in 2011 versus the previous 2 years. And, having a good, stable offensive line makes a HUGE difference for a QB (plus, having actual TEs to throw to when the protection breaks down).

The article is fairly anecdotal.

I guess I’ll just have to take your word for it as I haven’t seen enough to draw any meaningful conclusions.

by SuperHorn on Jan 17, 2012 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

And, here is another article discussing the differences in TE position

http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/102011aac.html

I just don’t think it is fair to say that Locker played with the same personnel as Price (not saying that Locker is better than Price or vice versa).

It was two different teams, especially offensively speaking.

Re:

It is virtually the same personnel, though. Just one year older. Maybe that made a huge difference the Huskies, I haven’t seen enough games to forge my own opinion.

by SuperHorn on Jan 17, 2012 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

But it wasn't the same personnel

Their offensive line had to be shuffled around and they had no TEs.

Just think if the Titans offensive line was shuffled around (Harris at OT, Stewart at OG, etc) and if we didn’t have Cook/Stevens. Would Hasselbeck had such a good year? Hell, we lost one player (Britt) and our passing game was never the same.

So, this past year’s Huskies team was much different than what Locker had.

by shawneriksmith on Jan 17, 2012 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

Re:
So, this past year’s Huskies team was much different than what Locker had.

Except it’s virtually the same people. Maybe they were a year older. Maybe there was more consistency in O-line positioning. At the end of the day, it’s basically the same players.

We can agree that things like consistency, maturity, and lack of TE injuries helped, but not to the extent that it would lead to such a gigantic statistical disparity, IMO.

So we’re clear, I’m not saying this is apples = apples. I’m saying that I’m not convinced that these little things in the offense can totally explain a +11.5% Comp, +1.7 Y/A, +16 Passing TDs, and +37 Qb rating.

Moreover, Price was #7 in the nation in passing efficiency. Locker never cracked the top 50.

None of this changes my opinion of Locker, necessarily. His play this year has made me a believer. Still, I think this is what it is…

That's what I'm chalking it up to.

It couldn’t have been easy going from one different system to another, actually with that in mind it’s a wonder he looked as good as he did at times this year. I think the important thing is mechanically he’s fairly sound with some footwork adjustments needed. But his pocket presence and delivery are already pretty good with room to grow for sure.

Those are big changes for a young, developing QB. That’s nothing to be scoffed at.

this worry seems to be based off of the assumption that Price won’t be regarded as a high draft pick and/or good NFL QB, dude’s no slouch, and that Locker hasn’t improved since college, which I think we can all agree that he has. also; Price has two receivers who were HS All American’s, Chris Polk another year older, plus Johnson and Aguilar are healthy, plus the offensive line had another year to develop with each other, BOOM.

Regarding the draft.

If you guys ever come across a prospect who you can’t find a lot of information about or want to learn more about, here is a website that does a good job in analyzing the game tapes and have scouting reports on almost every player entering the NFL draft.

So, just looking objectively at the statistics, I found an interesting situation heading into this year's draft.

St. Louis – The meme is that Fisher is stepping into a situation here with a great young QB to build around. The seeds are already planted to grow a successful franchise.

Cleveland – It’s time to move on from Colt McCoy. He just doesn’t have it to be an NFL QB. Considerations, among fans, range from Matt Flynn, to RGIII, to Nick Foles.

Over the past 2 combined years:
Colt McCoy has a better completion percentage, better QB rating, and better y/a, better TD%, and marginally inferior INT% than Bradford.

I don’t think the “team” argument carries weight as they both play with garbage talent around them. If anything, Bradford is better off with Jackson in the backfield.

I’m not necessarily saying that Colt is destined for a long, successful career in the NFL. I don’t really know. I just find it interesting that both these guys are on seemingly polar opposite sides of public opinion right now, despite the fact that Colt has out performed Bradford over the same period.

by SuperHorn on Jan 17, 2012 7:35 AM CST reply actions

Yeah I don't see why the judgement is already out on McCoy?

The dude has no WRs outside of Cribbs and he should never be used as a #1 WR. His RBs sucked last year. His TE was alright, but nothing special and his O-line is all over the place…
I wouldn’t mind him coming here to back up Locker sometime in the future, seems like a pretty well rounded kid with a similar skillset.

I don't see the Browns releasing him.

Holmgren basically said as much when he told Colt and the media that he would compete again for the starting job this offseason. There’s mixed signals about his future given this comment, but it seems pretty clear that he’ll be in Cleveland next year.

by SuperHorn on Jan 17, 2012 8:57 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I don't think he will be released until next year, nor do we really have a back up spot open until then

Yeah.

He’s not nearly as athletic as Locker, though. Nor does he have his arm strength. He does have the same kind of attitude, though. Doesn’t make excuses. Just keeps his head down and goes to work. That’s what won over the Browns locker room last year, because he was forced on Mangini by Holmgren, started at the bottom of the depth chart, kept his mouth shut, and eventually took over as the starter. The team really bought into that.

The guy I see the most parallels to is Drew Brees (who, I’ll point out, had inferior statistics at this point in his career). Similar size and similar question marks. Both have a remarkable work ethic and attitude, though. At the QB position, once a baseline skill set is in place, those little things are what separate the average from the elite.

by SuperHorn on Jan 17, 2012 9:34 AM CST up reply actions

I agree; he is just on a bad team that needs help now rather then later.

Browns should be more concerned about getting offensive help instead of trying to plug in another QB. They are always a mess though, so I don’t expect much to change. McCoy just needs to get out of there.

I gained a lot of respect for McCoy after the whole Mangini thing.

But I think the things you pointed out are why people aren’t high on him. And it’s the same reason they weren’t high on him coming out of college. He’s a decent athlete, but not THAT athletic, and his arm isn’t great. I’m not saying that’s right, I just get the impression that’s the case. Kind of like Andy Dalton, etc.

But yeah, I agree that his ceiling is Drew Brees if he puts it all together and finds himself in a perfection situation like Brees’s. That’s a hell of a ceiling.

Wow, I couldn't believe that myself until I looked at the stats myself.

You also forgot to mention the fumbles. Bradford has twice as many with 5 more games played, but I think he was really hampered by his injuries.

As you mention, both of them have a lack of talent surrounding them, but you also gotta take into account the horrid o-line play Bradford had to endure. The rams were first in the league in sacks allowed with a whopping 55 sacks, whereas the Browns were 14th with 39 sacks allowed. If you look at Bradford’s numbers in his first season alone, they were much superior, but it was this past season that kinda deflates his stats.

I was just playing a little Devil’s Advocate here, but I understand what you are trying to say regarding the comparison of Colt and Sam, and how even with similar stats, the fans have 2 strong and opposite opinions on the 2 QBs.

It should at least be pointed out that sacks/O-line play is closely tied to how quickly the QB gets the ball out. Just watching a handful of Browns games, their O-line was atrocious as well.

I’m not trying to make a case that Colt is better than Bradford. Given the perception of the two, I find it interesting that the statistics are so close. In the context of the discussions you hear from talking heads/fans on the subject, one would expect a pronounced disparity between the statistics of the two.

I think in most situations you shouldn't pass judgement on young QBs until after year 3 or so

Unless they show extremely poor decision-making or pocket presence (a la Gabbert) or have tremendous talent surrounding them (a la Sanchez).

I think Bradford and McCoy are both good QBs, but they do need to be surrounded by better talent with more stable coaching schemes. It is funny how the perception is different for both QBs though.

I know its not a pressing need but...

In a lot of mock drafts, Zack Brown falls down to us. I’ve heard alot about Barron and I’m not convinced that he’s worth a first rounder. We never use our top pick on a lineman due to the strength of coaching here and the best two guards will likely be gone. I think Zack Brown could give us the “playmaker” the coaches were talking about and also a linebacking trio that would be awesome for the next 10 years.

I think that we can fill our holes in free agency and in the lower rounds in the draft, because our needs are in positions where you don’t have to use a top pick to get good talent (G,C,S) There are so many Wr’s available in free agency this year we are bound to get one who is better than hawkins/avery. So I think this is a viable option for us, Spoon has been a decent stop-gap. I think Brown may be the best player on the board when we pick and he fills a need

I dunno about Brown.

Love his athleticism but I saw his game tape vs. Missouri yesterday and he missed too many plays than I would’ve liked out of a potential first rounder. He missed a few tackles, and some of the plays he just overran himself out of the play, which was really unfortunate as it seemed he was in good position. It seems like he has the instincts to become a good linebacker and has some pop in his tackles, but he also got taken out of some plays too easily IMO by blockers. This is just one game, so I can’t conclude anything. Just some things I wanted to point out for consideration. Hopefully, I get to watch more tape on him and get a stronger opinion of his positives and negatives and how I feel about him overall.

I’m not sure who Antonio Allen is to say either I like or dislike him but it’s a solid 4 rounds

5 Round Mock on mocking the draft, done by a Redskin fan.

1st #20 Tennessee – Peter Konz C Wisconsin – Titans grab the best Center in this class to upgrade their offensive line.

2nd #20 Tennessee – Michael Brockers DT LSU

3rd #20 Tennessee – Orson Charles TE Georgia

4th #20 Tennessee – Harrison Smith SS Notre Dame

5th #20 Tennessee – Jordan White WR Western Michigan

its kinda like a meh draft.

Get rid of the TE and I'd be all over this.

Highly unrealistic though, Brockers is likely going mid first.

If we get Brockers in the 2nd round, I would be a happy camper.

Heard many great things but I still wanna watch some tape on him.

Wouldnt that be nice. But I think the reason Ayers dropped last year was because of the lockout.

Teams didnt have a chance to fill spots with FA, so they had to draft for need first and not on luxery. This year you will teams be able to just draft what they want/need because of possible filling needs in FA. So can he be this years Ayers? Yes and no.

I'd be surprised if we spent 2 of our top 3 picks on another DT and another TE.

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

If we had overturned one of the horrendous loses ie the colts or jags

Would we have won the division. I don’t know the tie-breaking procedure, but by my count wouldn’t it make us have the same interdivisonal record and inter conference record.

Schefter with a few updates:
Rams expected to interview Jets VP/College Scouting Joey Clinkscales for their general manager vacancy this week.

Rams to hire former Jets asst. Brian Schottenheimer as their offensive coordinator.

I like the Schotty hire by Fish, though I understand why many here aren’t as high on him as I am. Don’t know anything about Clinkscales.

Rumor is that Chip Kelly will be the next coach in Tampa Bay.

Please…PLEASE let this happen. It’d be great to see how well that uptempo spread works in the NFL. They don’t have the personnel to run his zone read scheme, but the players are a perfect fit for uptempo-no huddle.

Link.
