Ugh. We should get more detailed info on Kenny Britt's knee today, but you just know it's going to be bad.
How bad is the running game right now? CJ2K still doesn't have 100 yards rushing on the season.
Derrick Morgan absolutely blew-up on Shaun Smith after Smith drew that stupid facemask penalty that kept the Broncos alive and moved them into the redzone. Smith didn't return to the game, but Munch claimed it was due to the packages the Broncos ran for the rest of the game. Smith probably did get benched though, so we'll need to keep an eye on how he reacts after this incident.
Marc Mariani still hasn't gotten the chance to return a kick-off. How unusual is that? We're the only team left in the NFL that hasn't logged a single returned kick-off yet this year.
I'm still used to hearing these kinds of comments after we play the Ravens or Steelers, but these two teams seem to really dislike each other.
Former Titan Kevin Vickerson was pretty quiet in terms of the stat sheet yesterday, but he was making noise according to the Titans' O-line. Jake Scott accused Vickerson of simulating the snap count to try and provoke the Titans into false starts. It worked:
"Since last year when they moved the umpire behind the line it is hard for the officials to hear that or be able to call it,'' guard Jake Scott said. "(Vickerson) does it the whole game. He did it when he was with us, and he does it every time we play them. He'll probably keep doing it because there is really no way to enforce it."
Last night on MCM Radio Jimmy recounted mcmref's breakdown of how terrible the sequence was that led to Nate Washington getting robbed. Nate spoke about it after the game, but he towed the line to avoid getting fined.
The TEs had a big game yesterday, but Jared Cook didn't lead the way.
Chris Hope appears on Forbes Magazine's list of the most overpaid players in the NFL.
The FO crew wonders if Matt Hasselbeck is really as good as he's played this year.
Stop me if you've heard this one before: The Texans played a good team, started out hot, then just laid down like a dead dog as their opponent came back to win the game.

OT: I have had no luck in the official MCM League.
My team was derailed by injuries from the beginning, and then I keep getting unfortunate matchups. Yesterday, Jermichael Finley decided to have a career day against me and Daniel Thomas broke out.

Tennessee offensive coordinator Chris Palmer. The Titans aren’t supposed to be 2-1, and Matt Hasselbeck isn’t supposed to be among the league’s most accurate passers (69.6 percent) through three weeks, especially because he had to learn a totally new offense in less than two months. But the teaching by Palmer — his system isn’t so much a progression system with receivers all over the secondary, but rather a system where the quarterback usually knows which half of the field he’s throwing to after the snap of the ball — has gotten Hasselbeck in gear quickly. And he’s helped Hasselbeck with his emphasis on colored targets in practice, making him hit exact spots in drills. It’s been a great match so far.

Throw it every down until Cleveland starts putting 7 guys in coverage and then check to runs. Pass first / run only when defense shows they are off guard.

I know they want to get CJ/the run game going, but...
It’s pretty obvious the run game is struggling, and the passing game is pretty effective. Why not just use the pass to set up the run? Make the defense back off or torch them, take your pick.

All recent interior linemen first-round picks. They may not get taken at the rate of tackles, but it happens more than you may think. Though I will agree, if it comes down to those two positions, receiver takes priority.

I will say Thor/Mathews (mainly Thor so far) has done more with less having no one in our O-line being drafted in the first round
(Roos in the second round)… but I would like having a can’t miss anchor on our line, especially at Center. IMO

But O-lineman are a much safer pick and if fits a big need I am all for taking one in the first round.

If you pick apart the Texans’ performance in the Superdome on Sunday, you can find a lot of reasons for the 40-33 defeat.
The immediate reaction is to target a horrible fourth quarter by Wade Phillips’ defense that couldn’t stop New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees after the Saints went to an empty backfield.

Seriously, I know they added a couple guys in their secondary.
But if you make them go down to their third, fourth corner, they’re still the same as the crappy ones from last year. Spread them out and get mismatches and weaker corners out there.

Jones hit him after the ball was (barely) released.
It was actually a clean hit where he led with his shoulder and hit him in the pads, but one of those that the official is going to flag. Orton then stayed down just long enough to make sure there was a flag. I was really hoping they would call the injury timeout and make Tebow come in for a play.

I was asking the Bronco's fan I was with yesterday (who are all from Denver visiting) what is the deal between Orton and Tebow, who do they think should be starting....?
they said Tebow, Orton will not win them games for Denver. He will put up great stats, but will not put them in position to win and the team doesn’t stand behind Orton at all. Anytime there is an adversity he is pointing fingers all over the field and crying about something all the time. So yeah, seemed to fit the bill yesterday as usual.

Sounds about right.
He can get the yards but I don’t see him putting the team on his back and carrying them like a true starting QB. I hate to say this cause it may bring up foul memories of the past couple years with the argument for keeping a certain former QB, but I’ll take a winner over stats anyday. Wait, a winner who ACTS like a QB.
…but it is nice seeing Hasselbeck air it out and get the stats while also winning.

I think after watching Ringer get 6 carries for -6 yards we can all start to agree that CJ’s lack of production isn’t so muc him as it is the run blocking of our O line, along with the fact that defenses seem to be keying on our run game.
don’t get me wrong, i like what palmer is doing so far, but it seemed as if our 1st half playcalling was very vanilla. i.e. every first down we run a base offense (2 tE’s, or 1TE plus a FB), and follow it up with a run. the defense knew when we were running. i would like to see more spread formations on 1st down, more passing on first down, instead of base offense run on 1st down, then spread formation and pass on 2nd and 3rd downs. mix it up a little and CJ will get his lanes.

And it kind of goes into what I have been saying all along…the Titans need to run more designed counters and cutbacks. Teams are just hitting the edge as quick as they can the moment the ball gets near CJ…they will not allow him to get the edge. So, instead of just keep running into it, the Titans should call more counters and designed cutbacks. Once teams get gashed on those counters and cutbacks, their LBs aren’t going to hit the edge as hard for fear of giving CJ that cutback…
Now, CJ should see that cutback lane more often than he has. And, the one counter play that the Titans called worked (9 yard gain), but Stevens was called for a pretty cheap holding call.
So, yes, the running game is part CJ’s fault for not seeing the cutback lanes, part O-line’s fault for not blocking well, and part OC’s fault for not taking advantage of what the defense is giving you.

we got lucky because everyone is just keying in on CJ but i think by the time we go to Pittsburgh opposing defenses are not going to focus in as much on the run game

I'm interested to see SuperHorn's running game break down.
After the Baltimore game, I was willing to place a large share of the blame on CJ.
Yesterday, there were a handful of running plays where there was just too much penetration, it seemed like.

It doesn’t help that everytime we managed to make a hole and CJ would get yardage it would get called back for holding. To boot, I don’t remember the refs calling a single holding penalty against Denver and some were pretty blatant.

Just finished watching all the runs from the first half.
Here’s a play by play diagnosis, in the order of which the run plays were called:
CJ. Outside Man Run. Jake Scott (pulling guard) Fail. -2 Yards.
CJ. Inside Zone. Leroy Harris (holding) fail. 4 yards, but called back. The holding was unnecessary. Quinn does a good job lead blocking on this play.
CJ. Inside Man Run. Leroy Harris (pulling guard) and Quinn Johnson (lead blocker) fail. Harris is slow to POA. Quinn doesn’t seal edge. 2 yards.
CJ. Zone Counter. Craig Stevens (holding), though the call seemed ticky tacky. Amano does a great job of sealing the back side of the play. 12 yard run, called back.
CJ. Zone Stretch. Harris (blown up in backfield), and Quinn Johnson (blocking space; leaving LB unblocked) fail. -1 yards.
Ringer. Inside run (can’t tell if it’s man or zone). Amano (beat off LOS) fail. -1 yards.
CJ. Zone Stretch. Amano (can’t hold block) fail. CJ (turns busted play into 4 yards) win. 4 yards.
CJ. Off tackle right, man. This one gets it’s own special highlight. Even though our O-line hasn’t shown anything that resembles success in man blocking, they stick with it. Harris pulls and is a) there late, and b) misses the block. Roos’ defender beats him so badly that he actually makes a play on CJ in the backfield. And, CJ seems content p#$$yfooting around in the backfield. Three Broncos tackle CJ in the backfield. This is an abortion of a play. -3 yards.
Ringer. Outside zone. Kenny Britt (kinda) fail. Broncos call a CB blitz to the playside. CJ -3.
CJ. Outside zone stretch. Hard to peg blame on one player, but there are no cutback lanes on the stretch play. 1 yard.
Ringer. Inside man. Some of this one’s on Hasselbeck. On 3rd and 1, he should have checked to a better play. Broncos overloaded the left side. Amano gets some blame. He gets dominated at the point of attack.
I hope to have a more detailed post later in the week highlighting specific plays.

Plenty of blame to go around, but most of it's on the offensive line.
I don’t know how it gets fixed.
I’d like to just write it off as good defense, but Darren McFadden went for 150 against them in week 1 on 6.8 YPC. McFadden is having an amazing year thusfar, but we’re supposed to have one of the best rushing attacks in football that’s highlighted by the best running back in football. In that sense, you’d expect at least 4 YPC from CJ yesterday, not an abysmal 1.6.
Not only is the playcalling vanilla, it’s also poorly executed. There are seldom any rushing lanes. The ones that do pop up are small, and CJ isn’t finding them. The O-line doesn’t seem interested in getting their hands dirty. They don’t relish in the process of laying into a defender. It’s a real f’ing problem.
My hope is that the coaches are letting this unit know that they are a joke in the run game. We just paid a guy to be one of the highest paid RB’s in NFL history and we’re the worst team in the NFL in rushing the football on a per game basis.
I don’t know whether to want to hug or punch Munchak for finding ways to win despite this train wreck in the running game. On one hand, it’s good to see him winning in spite of no run game. On the other, isn’t this guy supposed to be an O-line guru?
I'd say hug him.
Only because it probably won’t end well if you punch him.
But seriously, this is really disappointing to me, but also kind of the perception I got from watching the game.
Something has to give. Hopefully they’ll light a fire under some of these guys in the film room this week.

Here is my thoughts on:
isn’t this guy supposed to be an O-line guru?
our pass protection is, amazing right now. I understand we want/need to get CJ going, but we are winning without him. Our team hasn’t fallen apart because CJ can’t get the yards and that is what is giving me confidence.
As long as teams are still selling out to stop CJ (especially now that Britt is out) we need to find better ways to make Hasselhoff successful. Hands has been outstanding (for Hands standards) and is 3rd in the NFL in receptions (WTF?!!!!) we NEED other receivers to step up in the game (looking at D-will/Hawk). Let teams sell out on stopping the run and we will just air the ball out. We need to work to our strength on the O-line instead of consistently grinding out the run when it is just not working right now (not saying we abandon the run, but saying we can win games when the other teams game plan is to shut down CJ)

HBeck started looking for CJ in the passing game, because he knows that CJ is his only other true weapon on the field. It might take them a couple weeks, but there is no reason that we can’t use CJ like the eagles use McCoy, and how they used to use Westbrook.
It’s always been my philosophy in football that if you have a small scat back and the run is not working, then take at least a third of his touches running and make them designed short passes. CJ doesn’t have bad hands, not great but not bad, and we have to figure out ways to get him in space with KB out for an extended period.
In reality I think the KB injury will be the bane of this team. We will never again look like we did against Baltimore without KB. Sad but IMO true.

But look...
After the Ravens game, one of the Ravens players said publicly that they’d worked hard to control all of the gaps, and that that was what had kept CJ bottled up. No arguments. What I thought I saw was a game plan that focused on stopping the run, and that it was that focus that allowed Hasslebeck to throw all over them. And you could tell when the Ravens went away from it because CJ started picking up more chunks of yards.
Yesterday—and I didn’t watch the game because of my daughter’s Birthday—it seems like much the same happened.
So.
What happens when the next DC decides that he needs to sell out to stop the intermediate passing game? Can CJ do anything, or are we just doomed, even when the running game should have a theoretical advantage?

I am HOPING CJ hasn't lost all ability and vison in the running game, the problem might actually be the line is just not clicking in the running game
(plus everytime we do get a big gain, it’s called back because Harris was probably holding someone)
So, if we get a defense that starts playing some serious pass preventing defense, holes start opening up in the running lanes a little more, we run the hell out of CJ. We’ve got to stay versatile and play the game to what the opposing defense is giving us in order for us to win IMO.

I understand that, but I don’t agree with it. We had other plays to beat up that quarterback and rattle him, which we did. But this play in itself very well could have cost us this game. They don’t commit this penalty, they don’t get the TD. Face it, they had a lot of trouble moving the ball on us, but at the time Jones committed it, we were tired and the defense was probably anxious to get off the field. That being said, they had to go back out there, and weren’t really expecting it.

It was a glitch in judgement, one mistake out of a whole solid defensive effort, I actually laugh at the hit because we won.
