Baltimore Ravens Q&A

44457954_medium

Hello, Tennessee Titans Fans! As I'm sure you all well know, the Baltimore Ravens are coming to town this weekend. We are all looking forward to a great game between two old-school rivals. When I think of Ravens-Titans games, I will always remember the old smashmouth games from the early 2000's with Ray Lewis, Jamal Lewis, Steve McNair and Eddie George.

Obviously, times have changed, and the Ravens are coming to town with a full head of steam after massecring the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. The Titans on the other hand are coming off a tough loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Please us this post to ask questions about the Ravens and answer our questions below. I will do my best to provide you with the most accurate, unbiased answers along with others from the Baltimore Beatdown.

The following is a quick list of generic questions that most Ravens' fans will have... feel free to answer them if you feel so inclined:

1. How exactly does Hasselbeck look?

2. How is Chris Johnson? He's a stud, but only had 24 yards with a 2.7 average.

3. How does the offensive line look? They only allowed 2 sacks but how many pressures?

4. Britt's statistics are impressive. Is he really as good as his statistics or is the Jacksonville secondary bad?

5. How does the defense look? They allowed 97 yards to MJD... Will run defense be an issue versus Baltimore?

The following are both teams' statistics for comparison...

Will Harbaugh have enough class to not hang 100 on us?

I don’t think it will be a blowout. Your own tackle, Michael Roos, said it best…

"It is going to be a physical game, and their front seven is stout and they’ve been playing together for a while," tackle Michael Roos said of the Ravens. "They love to stop the run, and we love to run the ball. I don’t think we’ve ever had a blowout between us."

That was a franchise record for turnovers… Not bad for Chuck Pagano’s first day as the Ravens’ defensive coordinator.

were two of the worst INTs you will ever see in the NFL.

HE’S ED REED. maybe you have heard of him, ben?. might not want to float passes down the middle of the field right to him. just a thought.

The main factor was a dominate performance by the offensive line. Bryant McKinnie looks like a Pro Bowler again and was putting James Harrison on his butt all game long. The 170 yards rushing was one of the biggest factors. They could not stop the running game without nine in the box, and when they started dropping the safeties down to stop the run, the young tight ends and Boldin killed them in the passing game.

The defense was also able to bring serious pressure without blitzing extra defenders. Suggs and Ngata are monsters, and the young corners, Cary Williams in particular, looked good in coverage. Really, it was just a great performance by the whole team, but I think the offensive line set the tone with Rice’s 36-yard run, which was the first play of the game.

obviously on paper they should destroy us, but how many upsets have we seen in this season so far?? so lets prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I could see KB having a decent game. so alot of our success depends on our 53 mil running back. although i’m not looking forward to Ngata on our interiour line….

I've got several...

1) Do you think this team could suffer a letdown after last week? I know they’ll never admit it and say it was just another game, but I have to imagine they put a lot of time and energy into making sure they beat the Steelers after all the talk of Pittsburgh having the edge recently.

2) Cary Williams was a seventh round pick of ours a few years ago, has he simply performed well cause of the talent in the front seven and having Reed back there?

3) Boldin looked like he is going to acquit himself for his overall disappointing performance last year, who else does Flacco have to throw to besides him and Rice? Lee Evans didn’t do anything.

1. The Ravens don’t typically have ‘let-downs’ in the Harbaugh era. They use to be famous for that under Billick, but under Harbaugh, they are more consistent. They usually beat the teams they’re suppose to beat and struggle versus the good teams. Obviously, anything is possible in football, but I actually didn’t get the impression that the Ravens were ‘pressing’ per se versus the Steelers. They were just playing great fundamental football.

2. Cary Williams came out of nowhere this offseason. He was pretty good last season. That’s why they kept him dispite his suspension, but I don’t think the Ravens could have dreamed that he’d play as good as he has recently. He was making plays all offseason, jumping routes and playing tight coverage. He’s our best corner right now, and I don’t really think it’s the front seven. He’s just playing very well individually.

3. Lee Evans was a factor versus the Steelers… He just didn’t make a catch. The Steelers put their only good corner, Taylor, on Evans for the entire game. That gave Boldin, Rice and the young tight ends good matchups with the other corners and linebackers. Here’s what Harbaugh had to say about Evans after the game…

“Lee opened up a couple crossing routes for us where he takes the top off the coverage, and if they don’t run with him, Joe’s going to throw to him,” Harbaugh said during his post-game media session on Monday. “He cleared out some of those deep crossing routes that you saw. Dennis Pitta’s comes to mind. So I think he had that kind of impact.”

by BAL_Hawk on Sep 13, 2011 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions   2 recs

Also, the young tight ends, Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta, looked very good versus the Steelers.

Dickson had a sweet TD catch over Polamalu, and together they combined for over 100 yards receiving.

RE: Britt.

If he doesn’t have hamstring issues like last year and this preseason, and stays out of trouble off the field, sky’s the limit on what he can do. Jacksonville showed an improved secondary and you might be able to attribute some of his 80-yard TD to “luck”, but his second one was a thing of beauty where he went up to get it then tip-toed inside the endzone to get the points. He’s got the size and speed, just needs to stay healthy and build off of last week.

Maybe so.

Still, Hasselbeck is limited by his physical skillset. One of Kenny’s strong suits is the deep ball, and Matt just doesn’t have quite the arm necessary to stretch the field. By no means does that mean that Kenny will not have a monster season. It just means that the potential for big(ger) numbers isn’t as high as it would be with a strong armed QB.

Very true; but it is also nice to see Britt develop his possession game as well on some of those shorter throws

he is definitely capable of turning a small gain into a home-run as we’ve seen a few times now. Glad we don’t have to just rely on him being a deep threat.

What do you think Tennesse should do to stop Rice and Flacco

I watched Rice play the last couple of years and you stop him from running he pwns you catching the ball out the back-field and Baltimore has ALOT of weapons… you guys destroyed the Steelers (although your defense did a lot of the work) and that’s a feat in itself

by Grimerz757 on Sep 13, 2011 2:08 PM CDT reply actions

This is hard. I mean, if the Steelrs couldn’t do it?

Joe Flacco has traditionally struggled more against Cover-2/Tampa-2 defenses, including Cincinatti and Indianapolis. He’s actually played better against Pittsburgh even before last Sunday than against those 2 teams. The key is getting a consistent pass rush with 4 guys without leaving liabilities in coverage. You play a lot of zone and it will take Flacco time to find the hole, which with an effective pass rush leads to a lot of mistakes and sacks. It is essential to take away Ray Rice in the passing game for this to work, otherwise Flacco will contentedly kill you with checkdowns to Rice. This plan also relies on quick linebackers able to find and plug the holes in the running game. However, if you do that you’re going to have to find a solution for Vontae Leach, who will kill those linebackers. Be ready for 2TE sets, as the Ravens happily took out one of Leach, Boldin, or Evans for a second TE. Our TEs are fast, athletic and 6’4" making them difficult matchups.

The upside is that the offense probably won’t look as great as it did on Sunday but it asks a lot of really tough an often contradictory questions.

Pittsburgh tried doing that man, and we just launched to our two TE’s all game long. Send 6 or 7 if you want and see what our O-Line and Leach have to say about that one.

I am not sure if we will be able to stop both of them, I expect Britt or CJ to have a pretty solid game. But I can tell you that we will be sending the house at Hasselback ALL. GAME. LONG. So I hope your O-Line and QB are ready for Suggs and Ngata coming off the same side.

As for the Steelers game, I think it was a little of both. Our defense played the best game I have seen them play in a very, very long time. The last time I saw a performance like that was against the Dolphins in both games in 2008. But I also believe that the Steelers are getting up there in age. Their O-Line is one of the worst in the league and we took advantage of that. Also have to realize they have 8 starters on defense that are 30 or older.

Cary is OURS! He has been a pleasant surprise to most people, but has been on our radar for the last 2 years because of his size and the way he was playing in Special Teams.

He has really taken his game to another level, it has been nice to see us get another strong CB.

When I think about CJ,

A lot of things come to mind about how he performs. Is it because the defenses of other teams are constantly prepared? Yes. Do we need to do better in the passing game to open up more running lanes for him? Yes. But that isn’t all. He deserves SOME of the blame. There are times where he won’t even run through the hole, and he thinks his athleticism can solve all of his problems on the field and that he will eventually get lucky. That hasn’t happened in awhile. That being said, I think the coaches should help him in terms of what to do, and when. CJ needs to go back to basics and hit the damn hole. He shouldn’t always be trying to make something happen when he’s not even past the line of scrimmage. I understand some of this could be due to his lockout and him not being in camp. I will say this though, I’m positive that every Titans fan will tell you that what we saw from CJ last Sunday looked exactly like what we saw from him in the latter part of 2010. We can’t have that. I love CJ, but he needs to start producing some good yardage again. Going up against the Baltimore D isn’t doing him any favors either.

It might give us a better chance to win.

My real question is:
Can you rest your starters for this game, PLEASE?

1. Hasselbeck has looked okay so far. Still trying to get timing down with his receivers, especially Kenny Britt.

2. CJ is still struggling with the offense due to his holdout and missing the enter preseason. The O-line didn’t help him much either.

3. The O-line did decent enough in pass protection for most of the game, but the didn’t create that many lanes for CJ to run through.

4. Britt’s 2nd TD catch was in really good coverage, and the first one on that “fluke” play was because of his speed. I’m sure the Jags secondary isn’t going to be in the top 5 or even the top 10 this year, but they’re still an NFL secondary.

5. Run defense is what is really scaring me as a Titans fan. I just don’t know how we’ll stop the Ravens offense. Though, I hope I’m pleasantly surprised.

I would never say that any team scares the crap out of me, but teams that worry me are of course Pittsburgh and New England right now.

I do not think the Steeler team we saw last Sunday will be the same one we see come week 9. And even though the Ravens have a good track records against NE, how can you not be worried about the methodical, pick you apart style of football Brady and crew run?

yeah, but when they play agressive football teams they dont do as well

But they do look freakish on offense, but the defense is soft as ice cream

I would never call their defense soft. They are a mean group man. Steelers will bounce back in a big way, they always do. I will be very surprised if they don’t get at least 10 wins this year.

Oh ok. Yea, their defense does look soft. But I do think that will improve once Haynesworth gets going. Him and Worfolk up front is deadly. They have solid LB as well.

me too

After watching the dolphins last Monday you forget he’s there till they got stuffed at the goal line, maybe next week he blows up the middle (or he proves he just isn’t fit for a 3-4 defense)

One of these days....WHEN I have more time, WHEN I get that promotion, WHEN my ship comes in. Listen, TODAY is the day WHEN you start to put your goals into action. TODAY is the day WHEN you stop putting things off and decide that the only way the future IS going to be better is if I make TODAY WHENsday!!

Except Hancho, that dude was almost on the money

lol.. How many of us was really ready to call it quits before the game started (but we still sell-out our stadium unlike some teams who have glittery helmets)
