MCM Sunday Night Discussion: How Would You Cover the Cortland Finnegan Story?
It seems that in the past couple of year the Tennessee Titans have had a large number of story lines that divide the fanbase. I am not sure if there really are more with this franchise than any other, or if it just feels that way because I run this site, but it seems like we can't go more than a couple of months (even weeks sometimes) without a story that has people here arguing with each other.
That leads me to a question; If you were in charge of this site, how would you have covered yesterday's events surrounding Cortland Finnegan. I am interested in your answers.
Will it change the way I operate? Honestly, probably not. I run this site as a fan of the Titans. I am fans of individual players on the team, sure, but what I want more than anything else is for the Titans to win. Do I bring biases to the way I write about things? Sure, we all do, but I don't think anyone who has been here for any length of time thinks that I want anything other than for this team to win a Super Bowl.
This is a fansite. I know that the word "fansite" has some negative connotations in some circles, but I think that is what makes the site so cool. I don't have to toe the line of objectivity because that isn't what this site is about. I react to things the way I want to react to them, but all the while reacting as a fan of this team.I hope that at the end of the day we can set aside the differences we have on this issue and come together to cheer on this team.
I don't care to give any more commentary on the Finnegan situation because I have made my position clear, but I did want to give my reasoning for why I do what I do and ask what you would do.

Honestly
We have had some pretty unique situations… I don’t see how some of these arguments and debates are much different than anywhere else. I’d even go as far as to say they come across as more knowledgeable and level headed around here than in most other places.
Everyone here seems to be pretty diehard and strong on their opinions and for good reason whether they’re arguing one side or another. There are things about Finnegan I like and things I don’t so I’m not really gonna get into debate. As far as the way the contributors here portray their views on situations or spread the news is up to them. I think you all do a great job, sometimes I completely disagree with what some of the opinions are but they still come across as respectable and knowledgeable as I said before.
For anyone to think we are going to get by without serious arguments over players and people like Vince Young, Jeff Fisher and Cortland Finnegan there’s no way.
So to sum it all up and be blunt… I would say it is just you and the way you feel as you run the site, your kinda right on that thought. I’ve always found everyone that contributes here to be pretty subjective and see things pretty clearly and choices on contributors here have been good decisions.
For the most part when someone questions the intent of a post on this site its actually that person that’s blinded for one reason or another. All in my humble opinion.
So keep on keepin on doing a fine job gentlemen and don’t change a thing or give it second thought…
I think this is one of the weirdest stories I have ever followed as a sports fan.
I mean I could see it going either way. Finnegan never officially announced he was holding out, but circumstancial evidence pointed that way. Then again if he was holding out why did he not tell his coaches, teamates, or agent? I think I am very interested to see what else comes out of this situation.
I would have covered it exactly the same way
All you all did was report what was given by beat writers, the FO, Munch, and players (Hall). It’s Finnegan’s own fault that he got butthurt over his own stupidity.

Not so sure I said this
or made it clear in my post, but I’d have covered it the same way as well.
I’m pretty sure I saw a few other places that also covered it this way. I even think places like profootballtalk.com and such come here for news and to get a feel on how to approach spreading news in some cases.

As bias as i can be i would of said like it is.
analyzed what happened and does my best to give that to the readers. However don’t expect me to join the hate parade, I may not agree with his actions but I won’t hate him and I won’t drag his name through the mud because of one bad experience or choice.
Right I mean I don't think
anyone here hates him though. I hate some of the dumb shit he does, but its definitely no dumber than anything Britt has done. I expect him to do dumb shit like this and play good football lol

i agree sorta
i mean he is a pretty good corner for us. as long as he plays well, im not opposed to resigning him after this year. and as long as he is a titan i will support him, but you cant take away from the fact that he has made some dumb decisions. i guess im just expecting a perfect world where a team can exist with no distractions or boneheaded moves.
I gave up expecting
that… We were lucky to have guys like McNair and Eddie for a time. We were spoiled as hell. We have to learn to live with the idiots and appreciate the guys like Verner and Locker.

my take on is simple...
like you said this is a fansite, so don’t come here looking for only facts, if that’s the case you will be strongly dissapointed. if your looking for only the facts as to what has and hasn’t occured with no speculation, go to places like titansonline.com. this site is designed for opinions from the fans. and the people who run this site are not held to any different of a standard. they are allowed to have their opinions as well.
the cortland finnegan situation is a difficult one that is inevitably gonna cause people to disagree, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. so i don’t understand why everyone got in an uproar about it. as for me i have not said anything good or bad about cortland finnegan up to this point. but i’m about to break my silence. if you agree or disagree, i honestly dont care.
as for him as a player himself, the titans really need him. now granted i understand he has dropped his production the last couple years but he is still considered a top cb in the league. im not saying the titans do horrible without him, but it def. would help to have him on the field for us. as for him as a person, i have never cared for his attitude. and dont give me that, “oh he is raw and plays with fire and passion,” bs. the guy is flat out a bad sport at times and a jerk. inevitably this will likely be a make or break year for him as it should be.
now to answer jimmy’s question. i personally would’ve covered it the same way. i would have stated what has been reported and my OPINIONS on it. which of course, would have differed. i would have said something more like, “this shocks me as much as it shocks the rest of the fanbase and quite frankly it pisses me off, but i’m not gonna jump to conclusions until i have heard from both sides as to what this is all about.” that way you have expressed your displeasure in it jimmy, but at the same time still remain neutral. but that’s just me.
I wouldn't want it any other way
31 had to know the reaction that would have come from his absence. When the gm & the head coach are out of the loop on personnel taking personal leave for mysterious reasons it shows me two things: there are clear communication problems within the organization (which I guess we already knew), & 31 has instilled in his brain a sense of entitlement that he can operate outside the framework of the team.
That last thought leads me to discredit some of the criticism towards chuck cecil since with a that kind of attitude, maybe 31 wouldn’t/couldn’t communicate with cecil to make the necessary adjustments they never made.
I kind of wish they’d put him back in the nickel where he started. Humble him a little.
I sent Jimmy a text when I posted asking if that last post has too much hatred.
Im glad so many of you understand where were coming from.

Considering the information we had at the time of Finnegan’s tweet, I think you (Jimmy) came to the most reasonable conclusion which was the same as mine. Maybe more facts will come out, but I don’t see how Finnegan can save face on this one……most players that don’t show up to meetings or practice are mad about something. If it was a legitimate “personal reason” he would have told his coaches.
You covered it right
If anything, it just goes to show that the fan base will not put up with any garbage this year from the players. We’ve had enough of that. Players be warned… Hell hath no furry like a die hard fan scorned.
u may say im trying to start somthing here that may be true but i know more bout football than anyone of u

You're doing a great job Jimmy and all the other contributors
based on the info we had, we formed our own opinion on what was happening. How else are we suppose to think differently?
If you are looking for a place for people not to jump to conclusions, then a football fansite is not the place for you.
Really though, I just got home from out of town and the last thing I saw before I left was C-Finn.‘s ’explanation’, so I am still catching up on all of this

do what you do...
but i think i missed your post on this? maybe i’m blind.
I'm pretty sure that my strike as a Titans fan got Fisher fired. You're welcome.
Don't worry bout a thing man
This site is awesome and you can tell that one way or another all of the posters and contributors here are die hard fans. This site does a great job of mixing factual info with op ed peices so everybody gets what they’re looking for. I don’t really believe Finny in this whole mess either and I was pretty mad yesterday because the whole damn thing was just ridiculous, but at the same time I feel like everybody did a good job of realizing that while we overreacted a bit, it was still on Finny for not notifying the FO on what was going on and left us all to speculate. When fans have to deal with a lockout from a bunch of greedy assholes debating how to split 9 billion and then we deal with CJ and then Finny…like Rothbard said straw meet camels back.
Let's see Fish+Nameless+Heimerdinger+Cecil= Epic Fail
But we have a new equation F+Y+H+C= GONE!!!
The only problem I see with this site is that Smash miss quoted Finny- not cool.
All kidding aside, the way you guys covered the story is all you can do on a fan site. Fans want to know what’s up with their team and this is the place to find out. The reason why this site is the best Titans blog on the interwebs is because it takes everything Titans related and puts it all in one cumulative area. Nobody even comes close.
And if you take opinion out of the postings, there would be nothing special about this site. You might as well go read EAPN.
The sad thing is I don’t know if all the newbies around this site realize that this is not your (Jimmy) or any of the other contributors’ jobs. The fact that this site gets 5-10 postings on it most days just boggles my mind. Nobody is getting paid to type up a post and state their opinion.
As long as nobody pulls a BBS and starts trying to personally attack people and make asinine stories from out-of context quotes, I’ll always be a visitor here.
"The Final Countdown" is now playing in your head. You're welcome.
I don't think it's a story that deserves any additional attention
I don’t think anything positive will come from further discussion and it holds no relevant “football value.” Like Kenny Britt said, ’what’s in the past is in the past." And that’s not because history is irrelevant but because there is truly nothing worth talking about in either circumstance.
We all take a piss every day but no one ever talks about it. And that’s because it’s not worth the energy it takes to continue pondering the issue.
Jimmy, I always find your coverage and thoughts spot on….. no worries here.

Agreed.
But still.
One C. Finnegan
vanished Fri night from team hotel.
missed Sat meetings and practice.
press: where Finny? coaches: dunno. press: contract dispute? coaches: guess so, but we dunno for sure. press: disappointed? coaches: disappointed.
fans: Et tu Finnegan?
sarge: Where u Finnegan?
finnegan: Hi. ‘m Back. Personal bidness. Why’s everybody starin’ at me?

I get what I expect out of MCM.
I come to this site for 2 things only: titans news and discussing any titans related subjects.
I get that sometimes my oppinion is not the same as yours, but if i wanted only news I could check espn or another news site.
All the different points of view is what makes the discussions fun and informative at the same time.
So, MCM is a very well run fansite! I don´t usually take the time to give the feedback, so there you go. I couldn´t ask more from Jimmy and the other contributors.
I've always felt that there is a very clear strategy for the stories that run on this site.
The news is reported as heard from the reporters, twitter, etc. There is usually the contributors opinion on the matter at the end of the news. It’s never something totally irrational, and its always one persons opinion, no “you should think this” or any of that. I don’t see any other way that you can go about things. It works very well.

I also think that everyone who just posts to say "Geez lets just talk about FOOTBALL!!!!!1!1!!11!"
Needs to stop and realize that this is football. This affects our football team. To not report it and stay silent on anything that isn’t a football practice/game would not make this one of the best sites for Titans fans. The back and forth is something you sure aren’t gonna get in the Tennessean comment section (the intelligent parts, anyway). If you don’t like talking about it, then don’t click the story and read the comments.

well, I covered it in a way that I thought was appropriate: I gave my opinion and didn’t expect anyone else to have a similar one. I can see how constant my subjectivity might put some of our members off sometimes, but it’s just part of what I do.
Damn it feels good to be a contributor, Music City Miracles.

I suppose I assumed more news than opinion
I obviously enjoy the site – daily updates (usually multiple new articles) and every drop of Titans news! That’s a huge asset.
However, (hindsight being 20/20 and all) clearly reporting rumors as rumors and fact as fact may help quell some outrage. Emotions are a part of sports – but it seems the emotions rage wild in this community quite often. My thoughts on the first day’s worth of reactions were that of an echo chamber. People were mad – with the info out there, rightly so – but it just built and built. One person’s anger fueled another’s and soon it became hatred. It was as if it were a lynch mob – no trial, just execution (CUT HIM. TRADE HIM.).
In my opinion, the leadership of the site has a great influence on the community. How the news is delivered… or how opinions are stated can help shape the views of those of us that are uniformed (personally, I come here for breaking Titans news first, then ESPN for the broader view, and TotalTitans to see if they found it worthwhile to write about). A post from a main contributor that has a negative slant may be taken as truth by some. Likewise, a calming presence (ie, “These are the facts, these are the rumors. This is the speculation when piecing the clues together”) from the leaders – I believe – would have a big impact.
However, I assumed news was the priority over opinion. If this is an opinion-first site, sure, continue on. I only contribute page hits and comments – not major articles. I don’t run it, moderate, etc – so my opinion is as just one of the commentors. I don’t come here looking for pep-rallies and cheerleaders (though it’s fun to get lost in that from time to time), but I hate coming here to experience division among the fans – I live out of state and don’t personally know any other Titans fans. I’m used to arguing with Cowboy fans and the like – I’d prefer not to be constantly at odds with my own “household.” But I suppose I make that choice when I read the comments and choose to voice my opinion.
Would I have done it differently? Maybe. Was how you did it wrong? No.
I do want to express my appreciation for this site all the same, though.
I think you
overestimate how much influence the leadership has on the site. I would say I respect their opinions, I would say I like the contributors we have here. I would not go as far as to say they have a lot influence at all on the way I think about a player or how I feel about a situation. I think that’s one of the reasons there have been some serious and intense discussions. We all have our different views on what we expect from players mostly based on our own personal lives, I think that’s when things get the most intense. I think that 98% of the debates/discussions end up in “it’s all love homey” or “agree to disagree” and seem pretty fruitful… Of course there are going to be a share of immature people that only look to argue and think everyone should feel the way they should on any site. I see a lot less of that type of shit around here. We are a step above most.

Great job at reporting
Honestly, I couldn’t ask for a better site to be updated EVERY DAY about my beloved Titans. Whether it is rumor or fact, I like to be updated on Titans news as it happens. I think it is a good idea for us to speculate or just vent our emotions about the players or team in general. There are always posts that are made after the facts come out as well and we comment then as well, but overall in a simple phrase to sum up what I mean: “If it aint broke, don’t fix it.”

I understand things got crazy for a min and we were hurt
It all had to do with our fallout with VY and Fisher, those wounds aren’t healed yet. Top that off with another holdout from CJ and we have a very precarious situation on our team. I hope this just helps us remember to look into both sides of the story before we attempt to crucify someone on our roster

It is what it is...
A lot of people tend to throw situations out of proportion too early, but you did what we expected and that was put out all the info you knew about! So I feel that was atleast a little useful regardless if it wasn’t completely true, we atleast had a heads up that something was going on!

Here's how I handled it.
I didn’t say shit.
I'm not opinionated. I just have an ego that you can't handle.
I kind of fell into
this category on all the finanagans as well. I wanted to see where it went before I gave an opinion. I probably still haven’t given one. I also am not a contributor that’s leaned on for news. I think it’s nice to have people willing to put themselves out there and give their opinions knowing people might disagree or even kill em for it.

You said it best when
You state that this is a FANSITE!!!! By being a fan’s site it has opinions, lots and lots of opinions. That what makes this site great. It can be subjective, objective and none of that at the same time. This site is for fans who want a shot of two-tone blue kool aid and those who want fourty ounce bottle of it. Agree and disagree all we want is our beloved Titans to win. I say don’t change a thing keep putting out the GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY about the team. If the reader’s don’t like it, they can read something else.
