Tennessee Titans Release A Depth Chart
The Tennessee Titans have now updated the depth chart on the official site. There are a few interesting pieces to the first depth chart. Right now they have Jason McCourty listed ahead of Alterraun Verner at corner opposite Cortland Finnegan. Those two were neck and neck in training camp last year and have split first team reps so far this year in camp. There is no doubt that both of them are quality corners.
Derrick Morgan and Jason Jones are listed as the starting defensive ends. Williams Hayes is listed behind Morgan at LDE after being a starter for most of the season last year.
While Karl Klug and Zach Clayton have seen a lot of time with the first team in the workouts, Sen'Derrick Marks and Shaun Smith are listed as the starting defensive tackles. Klug and Clayton are actually way down the chart with Jovan Haye and Jurrell Casey being listed as the twos.
Will Witherspoon is listed ahead of Gerald McRath as a starting outside linebacker opposite rookie Akeem Ayers.
Chris Hope is listed ahead of Jordan Babineaux. That is also going to be an interesting battle to watch.
Damian Williams is listed behind Kenny Britt on the depth chart while the other wide receiver position has Nate Washington followed by Justin Gage. I hope that doesn't mean that Britt and Williams can never be on the field at the same time because they play the same position.

Jimmy (and those that have attended practices) – what are your thoughts on how they have been performing? Any players look like they have an obvious advantage over the others?
is there some significance to the fact it says “Depth Chart ‘unofficial?’” ie. can we put any stock into it?
It shouldn't be the be all end all
but my guess is there is some knowledge behind it, but maybe not. Maybe it is just the media relations staff trying to give the media something other than Finnegan to talk about.

Willin Hayes
was not the starter at LDE last year. That was Babin with Ball at RDE. Hayes lost his job with a injury in pre season and never recovered. Also Morgan was at RDE behind Ball.

No problem with JMac being listed ahead of ATV
He beat him in camp last year and started, probably happening again.

RE: WR #1 & 2 depths
someone more versed in this tell me the difference between being put in each category.
I get that the #1 WR usually gets the first look from the QB. but why put reserves in the certain categories? so if Nate gets hurt, Gage goes in before Williams… and if Britt is out (fair chance), DWilliams gets the first shot to start? how much crossover can there be?
in 3-wide sets, who gets the first nod – Gage?
or am i over-analyzing this?
2 different positions. A guy who gets the ball deep, takes the top off the defense, and a guy who creates separation with agility/and or body control.
so Fish was spittin' truth about Moss and Britt playing the same position
…and not being able to share the field?! color me shocked.
As much as we all like to bash it, I think it was an honest opinion of his and Dinger’s. I don’t agree, though—I think Moss is versatile. There’s also an argument to be made for getting your best players on the field. Just the opinion of a guy who does not get paid to coach football.
right
Why not try and put a package for all play makers to be fielded at once…

makes some sense
you want guys to master their primary roles. if they can master other roles, too – bonus!
it’s crazy that QBs are expected to learn the roles of everyone while (i assume here) other positions just learn one or two.
Were they the same position?
Yes, more than likely. You have flankers and split ends on the outside. Two different positions. Then there’s also slot receivers.
The part that pissed me (and I’m assuming most others) off was the implication that either receiver couldn’t move to another position.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

Craig stevens listed as starting te
Am i missing something here cook catches better than stevens and graham blocks better than stevens so why the fisher move
by p a on Aug 7, 2011 4:31 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Stevens is the best overall
if you only have one TE in the line up it is better to have the best overall so the defense dont know if you are going to pass or rtun..just my opinion, i am no expert ;)
TOUCHDOWN...GUESS WHO...KENNY BRITT!
yea Stevens is the best total TE we have. Cook will still be huge for us, but Craig is a good weapon as well.
|TENNESSEE TITANS|PHILADELPHIA 76ERS|
here's what caught my interest
the one that popped out the most is the te position, they have stevens, cook, and then graham, i would’ve guessed, cook, graham, and then stevens, but i also don’t see why they put marks in front of casey if casey has been getting so much penetration and been playing so well at camp so far. but then again i don’t look too much into this depth chart cuz i think a lot of these positions are gonna be split for time, for instance we all know we have a rotation for our d line, and i think all of our wr will get pretty much equal playing time. i also see ringer taking some of the load off cj this year to so we dont have to risk breaking cj down.
either way...
i like the majority of our team and i think we’ll be better off this year than last year. we seem to have a bit more depth in several positions where we didn’t last year.
im wondering how many players we keep at certain positions
In a perfect world we can keep em all if they’re contributing… but our squad looks really deep and it makes me wanna see them in action that much more

what i would like to see and what i think will happen are 2 different scenarios lol.
i would like to see us cut guys that are taking up cap room and not really contributing (pointing to gage, haye and hope) but we all know that this team will likely hold on to these guys for sheer fact that they have been around for a while and can bring some veteran leadership to the table or something i guess. but i see them keeping 3 qbs, 4 rbs including the fb, 3 tes, 5 wrs, at least 10 o linemen if not more, at least 9 d linemen if not more, 7 lbs, around 9 dbs including safties, and of course only 1 k, 1p, and 1 long snapper. that would make 53, but hopefully we can hide around 6 or 7 on the practice squad that have been doing well like klug and clayton if they dont make the team.
yea me too
but i think harper makes it over stafon cuz he is a tough back, similiar to what we had in lendale a couple years ago. i think well start utilyzing our back field a little more this year instead of just giving it to cj all the time. ringer and harper have great attributes as well, ringer catches the ball well so he can be used on screens (which we are bringing back) and pass plays to the hb. and harper is a great goal line back from what i hear and has the ability to ram through people. he could be a short yardage back as well.
we might cut Johnson and keep Harper
Depending how Johnson rebounds from that injury last year…. I want a three HB rotation like the one the NYG had the year they won the super bowl

i agree 100%
and like i was saying we have the three backs to do it, speed(CJ), crafty(Ringer), and brusing(Harper). and the great thing is they are all still young, so this could work for us for quite some time as long as we can keep their contracts negotiated.
actually we could keep both of them
Remember when we had CJ, Lendale, RInger, and Pearman?

it seems we have always been thin at wr
i really cant remember a time when we had 6 healthy wrs on the roster at once. we usually only keep 5 at a time and usually only keep 2 qbs at a time as well, but i dont see them letting rusty and ratliff walk this year. i bet the old velociraffe makes the cut, besides he has a great attitude and work ethic and could develop into a solid career back up for us.
NOOOOOO!!!!
We can do better for a backup than Rusty!!!
I’d rather have Orton’s weak arm

lol...
although i am one of the few fans who actually likes orton, a lot, he is not in the market to be a back up right now lol, and by the time he is in that position, we will likely not be in the market to go after him.
i dont like Orton but he's got the intangibles of a backup
He can cry and moan that he needs to start but he should be happy as a backup, he makes a good one and his number@ show he wins…. LET TEBOW PLAY GUY!!!

i my opinion we will only keep 5 wrs, we know britt, williams, mariani and most likely washington will make it (although i feel like he drops too many balls, he will prob have this year to prove himself to us). I think its a make or break year for washington this year. that only leaves gage and hawkins battling for that last spot. to be honest with you, i think gage has shown all he can do and has passed his prime. hawkins on the other hand has never really been given a honest shot to play, and from what i have been hearing, he has made some nice plays in camp so far, i hope he makes it over gage.
i hope we keep
Britt, Washington, D-Will, Mariani, Preston, and Hawkins

yea i agree
i don’t understand how this guy hasn’t had a chance to play for this team, i mean he looks good in training camps and preseasons, but he has been the victim of fisher and staff playing veterans regardless of talent and skill, i mean he couldn’t have been much worse than gage, especially now lol. i mean every time i listen in to training camp or hear a report on it, he makes at least one amazing diving catch or sideline tip toe in bounds or other circus catch.
I was thinking hed be a monster the moment we drafted him
I mean it was a jewel from a draft that we already got our best player from

yea that was hilarious.
but to the texans credit, they left him open, it wasn’t that he just flat out beat the defender (not that he couldn’t outrun anyone on the texans roster anyways).
they probably thought that
And just let him get that TD…

Haven’t heard much at all about him through the first few weeks of camp, hopefully he’s just been quietly putting it all together.

Seeing the depth chart on paper makes it real.
Biggest changes are obviously QBs and LBs.
From there, it’s additional depth on defense. Our DTs are more stacked with Casey, Clayton and Klug and now Haye being #2.
Our offense looks identical. So all our eggs are in the baskets of QB and Palmer. I hope Harper ends up being a surprise and adding another dimension to our run game.

Ok, is anyone having a problem with the Starters at DT?
Isnt Marks hurt and hasnt even practiced at all? I’m sorry but I feel like he has to earn that spot by practicing. If he is injuried then you put him at the bottom and once he gets back then he works his way back.

Since when do they play the games in the Meetings or Workout rooms?
Last I checked they are played on a Field 120yds long and 53.33yds wide. It seems like he is getting the Fisher treatment of being a Vet so he will get to start. He has to earn that spot on the field and you do it by practicing and showing that it is yours.
by Titans_Firefighter on Aug 8, 2011 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions
I really hope not
Plus, when he was under Fisher he rarely had got a chance to play…. Marks may have earned his spot somehow, think about it, nobody really has earned a spot on the field just yet, AAAND…. on our D line, everyone who makes the team is on the rotation Sooo I guess starting doesn’t mean AS much

Well I was kinda looking at it as a player's veiw.
Klug and Clayton, one of them are going to get cut most likely. How do you think they feel that a player that hasnt practiced because of injury but is going to be a starter and they are scrapping for that last spot? If a player is injuried then like I said move him the bottom till he starts practicing, after his first practice then he can be moved to the starter, but not till then.
by Titans_Firefighter on Aug 8, 2011 1:55 AM CDT up reply actions
well from a coach's POV
That decision is a while away from being made… they have a month to prove themselves and I think we keep both those guys… we always have a deep d-line, now if Haye doesn’t show much improvement he’s probably the one who should worry about getting cut
