Projecting the Final Tennessee Titans 53 Man Roster
The Tennessee Titans have already started their roster cuts with nine players sent home today. There weren't any surprising or necessarily difficult moves made today, but that won't be the case come Saturday when they have to trim the roster to 53.
My latest shot at projecting the final 53 is after the jump.

So that is 50 guys. I think all of those guys listed above are locks (with the exception of offensive line back-ups). The last three spots are probably pretty fluid at this point, but I have Rennie Curran, Vincent Fuller, and Pannel Egboh as the last three to make it.
Egboh gets the nod because of the injuries at defensive end. There is a realistic chance that Hayes and Ball could be the only two healthy defensive ends of the group listed above on opening day. That would mean that they would be forced to keep sixth defensive end for depth purposes.

Definitely agree on your DE point
They are going to have to keep an extra guy there. Jones and Morgan = perpetually injured. ARRRGH!!1

Ok, I have to disagree on a few spots
I still don’t see how Gage will make this roster. He has been running with the 3rd team in nearly all of the preseason games. He doesn’t have a catch to his name. I know Munchak said that was because they know what they have in Gage, but wouldn’t they want him to develop some chemistry with Hasselbeck before the season (if they intended to keep him). So, I just don’t see Gage making this roster, unless the coaching staff is just so down on Hawkins (and now Curtis) that Gage gets the roster spot by default. I doubt that happens (this isn’t Jeff Fisher that we are talking about here).
On the OL, you will probably see Matthews make it before Durand (what has Durand done last season or this preseason). Also, I think Stingily will be practice squad material…I don’t see them keeping 9 OL.
I pretty much agree with the defensive assessment…I do think Ford may be cut as he doesn’t fit in with Gray’s system per se, but I expect him to make the roster.
I do think Robert Johnson will make it before Rennie Curran. They will need the safety depth more than the LB depth.
And, just one other point I want to make
I think this coaching staff is really buying into Jake Locker all the way…so, I expect them to value youth over veterans so that the team can grow with Locker. You don’t want Locker to get new WRs and OL in year 2 or 3 when he will be expected to lead this team.

…I would have agreed re Gage. Williams and Hawkins haven’t helped themselves in that time.

But has Gage helped himself?
I don’t see this coaching staff just keeping Gage (and his ~$3mln salary) just because he is a vet and the young guys have made a couple of mistakes in preseason games.
Like I said, this isn’t Jeff Fisher’s team anymore.

Ford stays for 3rd downs
He will come in as a pass rush specialist and will be a cog in hybrid packages. If used right he could have double digits sacks.

Here is something interesting re: Durand
He is listed ahead of Jake Scott on the depth chart on Titans Online. Doesn’t mean anything, but I thought it was funny.

my last three: rennie curran, vincent fuller, and RoJo
so it looks like Morgan could miss the opener and more. great.
Agreed.
But still.
isn't it 54 guys now? that 3rd QB thing confuses the crap out of me

No, but the 3rd QB counts toward the 46.
Before you got 45 + 3rd QB.
Now you get 46, no matter how many are QBs, but you don’t get 46 + 3rd QB.
I'm assuming Shaw and Bailey stick for ST purposes?
I wonder how much that new rule will affect decisions. Will guys run it out as much as they have been during the preseason? If they do, having those good special teams guys will still matter (and for punt return/coverage purposes too). It’ll be interesting to see.

Rusty
Guess I’d be surprised if we don’t have a 3rd QB.
Kuharsky has a report on his blog saying Morgan’s knee is giving him problems. He is going to see a specialist. Doesn’t sound good. Our best players on the defensive line are going to be injured all season long I feel like. Sigh…a lot of money wasted.
I heard Teresa Walker reporting
this evening that the specialist he’s gone to see is the one that did the surgery. So it’s not like he’s going to see a new doc, which would definitely imply something is up. In any case, yeah, been less than a year off knee surgery I think – so they may not green flag him for the beginning of the season.

perfect!
I was thinking earlier I wanted to see your final 53 prediction, so to help me learn the back-end guys on the team this year…….and bam, here it is….perfect
My first impression is that the WR group is little uner-whelming
That WR group scares me…..
Maybe it is because instead of seeing TD’s and yard with Britt, I see injuries and suspensions
cover up britt and then evaluate that group….yuck…..
offense desperately needs CJ…..
WR and DE both
due to injuries on the latter.
by numbertenox on Aug 29, 2011 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions
yep, DE too
after looking over the groups more, DE also looks thin because my impression that those guys (outside of ball) are always injured
D
I feel better about our LB, DT, CB, and S groups than I did last year
in the secondary, at the very least I figure we need 2 of 3 CB’s to play good and 2 of 3 safeties to play good……
I don’t care who the odd man out is of those 6 (finny, av, jm, grif, hope, babs), as long as 4 show they can play and thus earn the minutes…..
Will everyone else post their 53 man rosters as well?

I would be shocked if all of these players make the roster ....
Mike Otto
Ryan Durand
Fernando Velasco
Byron Stingily
It just seems redundant to keep 9 OL.
And if our WR corps consists of the 5 players listed above I can definitely see us being a bottom 5 team this year. Britt is nearly guaranteed to get injured in the first 6 games and Washington-Williams starting is just depressing at this point. I can’t believe there isn’t a FA wideout better than at least one of those guys.
Everything else looks spot on to me.

you have to keep 9
Velasco can play C and G, and Stngily plays T but they may move him to G.
and Durand is better than mathews from what i’ve seen in Regular Season Gamesr

Durand only played in one game last year
And that was the October 10 game against the Cowboys…I don’t think he played in the last couple of games when all the young linemen were getting a look (Velasco / Matthews mainly).

Yeah but
You said that he was better than Matthews based on what you’ve seen in Regular Season Games…he has only played in one game. Matthews played in 3 games with one start last year, so…
by shawneriksmith on Aug 30, 2011 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions
So is Matthews practice squad eligible?
Who do you think makes the squad?
by danomite on Aug 30, 2011 5:28 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
he is
and he won’t make the squad because he is eligible.
if the Titans put Matthews over a guy like Durand, then you know Durand won’t sign on our practice squad, he will jump at the opportunity to make another teams 53 man roster (and get paid more).
Matthews, on the other hand, won;t leave for another team’s 53, and will accept the practice squad demotion. He will never leave this team as he likes the OL coach (I assume).
My 53 - changes in bold
I think we take 5 CB’s, 8 OL, Gage doesn’t make the team, and Curran will definitely make the team. He isn’t too far removed from a 3rd round pick. He also played very well that last game, and contributes on special teams.

With Britt hurt (as usual), that's a pretty thin group at WR.

My predictions:
I think Frank Walker will make the team along with Tommie Campbell – I don’t think they can go too thin at that spot and I don’t like moving a safety over to play outside although Babs seems capable
I don’t think Bailey will make the team – I think we have all around better special teams players now like Babs and Campbell and the new rules don’t help either
I think Rusty Smith makes the team – Hasselbeck has too much of an injury history and I think he is gonna be injured at times throughout the season
I think the Titans bring in a veteran swing tackle to pair with Otto and Velasco as the only OL backups – they need someone that can play left tackle
I think they bring in a veteran WR as well – I’m thinking a pretty big name. So they will cut Hawkins and Gage.
I think Rusty Smith will make the team.
If for nothing else, because they don’t want to throw Locker into the fire if something were to happen to Hasselbeck.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! I think odds are they keep Rusty around but...
if something happens to Matt, it’ll be Jake who goes in and not Rusty. But that’s just my opinion.
The Force is with you, young SkyLocker, but you are not a Jedi... yet!
I say they cut Rusty
and move him to top of “people to call in an emergency”. No need for a 3rd QB now that they aren’t special.

The final 53...
Smith will be cut and the Titans will find a new #3 QB among final cuts.
I don’t think that either Gage or Hope will make the final roster, if only because the team can save 8 million in cap space.
If Kevin Curtis shows anything in the last preseason game, he will make the final roster.
On the offensive line, Velasco, Otto, and Durand are decent backups. Nonetheless, it would not surprise me if a veteran who can play multiple positions on the line is brought in as a back up. My guess is that Durand will be cut in that instance.
Patrick Bailey and Rennie Curran will not make the final roster.
Fuller, Robert Johnson, and Myron Rolle will make the roster. Babineaux will start opposite Griffin and will be replaced by Johnson or Rolle by mid season.
Morgan may end up on the PUP list to start the season.
The team may have to pick up another DE and/or DT amongst final cuts.

Rolle performs at very high level
Maybe you should examine Rolle’s performance in terms of carrying out his assignment. Also Rolle’s cover skills are better than average and perhaps one of the better cover guys in the defensive back field.
Are you talking about in NFL games??

NFL
Could only judge Rolle on Pre-Season Games and Practices in much the same manner you could judge the other safties. Fuller, Babineaux and Smith all have regular season game film in the can but you can match all of the safties up by Preseason games and practices.
When you’re ready to have a truly analytical discussion we can. No need for emotional or name calling.
i think, rolle, rojo, curtis, mathews, and stafon have to find some way to make the team
