Tennessee Titans Roster Cuts

The Tennessee Titans have already started making their roster cuts according to Terry McCormick. He is reporting that the team has released punter Chad Cunningham and long snapper John Stokes. Neither of these cuts come as a surprise because you knew that Brett Kern and Ken Amato have those spots locked up.

At least Cunningham will always have his run from Saturday night to remember.

Keep in mind that they have to cut the roster down to 80 tomorrow. The final cut to 53 will be done on Saturday.

I am going to take another shot at predicting the final 53 later today, but as a preview it looks like the tough spots to make predictions will be at linebacker and safety. There is quality depth at linebacker making the decisions tough, but that isn't necessarily the case at safety. It is going to be tough to decide who to keep at safety behind Chris Hope, Michael Griffin and Jordan Babineaux. They have to keep at least one more guy.

Stay tuned to the site throughout the day for the latest on all the Titans roster moves.

[UPDATE]- McCormick is now tweeting that LB Kevin Malast has also been cut.

[UPDATE #2]- Jim Wyatt is now reporting that the team has released DT Jovan Haye and S Nick Schommer.  Well, there is one guy that won't be in the mix at safety.

[UPDATE #3]- Wyatt saying QB Brett Ratliff, WR Owen Spencer and FB Patrick Hill have been cut.

[UPDATE#4]- Jonathan Cornell and Kevin Malast also gone per Wyatt.

Not surprising at all.

The rookie DTs’ performances so far made that one an easy call, especially when the contract is factored in.

for real

please let him sign with any afc south team so that we don’t have to worry about facing pressure from their defensive tackle spot

Hopefully Gage will be a part of this first wave too.

That would make me oh-so-happy.

If he gets cut, I think it's when we trim down to 53

Oh it's definitely wishful thinking by me.

It’s still preseason, I’m taking the optimistic, hopeful approach.

I can't see Gage getting cut now.

He's practice squad eligible right?

I think they’ll go that route with him.

Why put him on the practice squad?

He’s a Dinger hold over. Let’s get someone that it’s not a unrealistic to say, “He could be a solid number 2 one day”.

I'm guessing the reason Titans fans outnumber Colts fans here Is because all the Colts fans are trying to see how well a toaster works in the bath. -ISN

It's not unrealistic to think he could be a decent number two someday.

Putting him on the practice squad will allow him to develop. He’s got the size and arm to stick around, give him some time to learn the new system. If we’re going to go by whether someone is a “Dinger guy” or not, then there’s going to be no one on the offensive side of the ball.

is he?

He was on active roster once already right? Isn’t there something about once on active roster can’t go back to practice squad?

by numbertenox on Aug 29, 2011 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions

NewsToTom in the radio chat last night said...

Something about being active for less than eight games, and I believe said Smith was eligible. Hold on…

Ha! Googled “NFL practice squad rules” and MCM was the fourth link on the page. It’s still somewhat confusing, but basically Smith is eligible because while he does have an accrued season, he was active for less than 8 games.

Upon further review....

it looks like the D feels the same way I do about preseason games. That was a pretty halfhearted effort against Chicago. On the other side of the ball, it looks like Harper solidified a spot on the team with his performance. D. Will?….not so much…:-( ….As far as the cuts go, from 80 down to 53, that’s a bunch of folks. I hope they keep Tommie.

No surprise about Haye

I’m not surprised at all about Haye,he was one of those undersized DT’s that Fisher seemed to fall in love with.Size matters & with the emergence of Klug,Haye became expendable.I hope Egbo makes the roster,I can hear Berman now, saying"Let go of my Egbo!"

I think if Gage gets cut…

… it won’t be until after the last preseason game.

They will wait to see if any other WR on the team gets hurt. If not, I think he goes bye-bye.

Of course, he might be gone before opening day if some WR on another team they like gets cut and they can sign him.

We shall see…

I hope Cunningham makes it on another team.

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

Jovan Haye was one of the biggest wastes of money in the past few years...

… and he was supposed to “help replace Albert Haynesworth.”

So on the line we have Morgan, Smith, Klug, Jones, Ford, Hayes, Ball, Clayton and maybe Marks?

i mean yeah c’mon… he got his own ESPN/draft special bit last year because he almost died from a weightlifting accident so that means he HAS to be good.
