ATTENTION TITANS NATION: Last Night's Performance Doesn't Mean They Don't Need CJ

Paul Kuharsky does this thing on the radio here called the megaphone. Whenever he wants everyone to really pay attention to what he is about to say he cups his hands around the microphone to give the megaphone effect. After last night's rushing performance by guys like Jamie Harper and Stafon Johnson my Twitter feed is full of people telling me that the Tennessee Titans no longer need CJ2K, so if I may borrow his megaphone:

ATTENTION TITANS NATION- THE FACT THAT TWO RUNNING BACKS LOOKED REALLY GOOD IN A PRESEASON GAME HAS NO EFFECT ON WHETHER OR NOT THE TITANS NEED CHRIS JOHNSON. JOHNSON IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK IN THE GAME, AND THERE ISN'T ANYONE ON THIS TEAM WHO CAN REPLACE HIM.

Now I feel better. Look, I am as happy as anyone that the Titans look like they have a couple of guys on the roster that look like they can be solid NFL running backs, but they are not going to replace what CJ gives this team because 1. Defenses will not be scheming to stop Javon Ringer and Harper. 2. The threat of Ringer and Harper in the backfield doesn't open things up for guys on the outside at all. 3. The screen pass that Harper picked up 20+ on, Johnson could have taken to the house. You simply cannot replace what Johnson brings to this offense.

Does that mean they should match what the Cardinals gave Larry Fitzgerald? Absolutely not, but let's not think that the Titans suddenly have the upper hand because a couple of guys ran well in a preseason game.

Either CJ lowers his asking price or he can sit out a season.

Frankly with the Fitzgerald deal, I think CJ just became unattainable.

CJ

Greedy! not a team player. I thought he was differnt. Money the root of all evil…

Yeah, we need CJ, but...

There’s a certain point where some things start to look like greed. I like the notion of him being the highest paid RB…but he wants to be an elite player… Well what else would the HIGHEST PAID IN THE POSITION BE??? really now.. One thing you’ll notice about the league’s most elite players…(Manning, Brady, etc) THEY SHOW UP FOR WORK! YES Johnson deserves much better and shame on the Titans for that, but if he’s not willing to SHOW UP and talk, then he’s not worth what little they DID pay him!

How would it be to the fan's advantage to NOT sign him?

It’s not our money.

There’s not a better RB to be had.

And the Titans are not going to run out and sign some OTHER high profile FA.

So, from the fan’s perspective, not signing CJ is a losing proposition no matter what.

Thank You Jimmy

WE NEED CJ. Like you mentioned the screen pass to HARPER, CJ would of taken it to the house. No questios asked. A couple of running plays last night where they had one defender to passby and didn’t. CJ would of had 2 long TD’s last night. The Offensive line looks already in season form. HARPER, RINGER and SJ are just temporary solutions but they don’t and won’t scare any defenses like CJ will.

As much as I love watching cj in two toned blue, if he is going to cripple this franchise for the next five years I’d rather go with a RBBC.

Locker has a receiver either side;
Locker fumbles the snap;
Picks it up, sprints out to the right;
Looking;
Fires deep downfield
MAN IS WIDE OPEN!!
TOCHDOWWWWWN TITANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that CJ isn't worth Larry Fitz dollars

Larry Fitz isn’t worth Larry Fitz dollars. But with the new CBA allowing for quarter sized rookie contracts I think this will become the standard. We have seen a C, WR and RB all get paid top dollar contracts, especially WR and C. Isn’t this what everyone wanted though, for vets to get the contracts and not the rookies?
Also we have a new QB and entirely new coaching staff, so I believe (hope) the striving for 8-8 seasons is a past, with or without CJ.

how ‘bout this: if the team wants an elite offense, like, really truly elite, they’ll bring back CJ for a hefty price.

If this team wants an elite offense, they need an elite QB.

Would CJ be a nice complement? Sure.

But, let’s not kid ourselves, until Locker develops into top 10 level, the idea of us being consistently elite offensively is a pipe dream.

by SuperHorn on Aug 21, 2011 4:21 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

right, that was assuming that Locker is going places.

obviously, they think they’ve got their guy at QB, but the time frame is awkward. if we knew exactly what we were getting at QB then this wouldn’t be an issue. if Locker is awesome and has the best RB in the game behind him as well as a play making tight end and wide receiver, this offense is going to be amazing. like, Super Bowl level. I think it could be really good even without the top running back, but with CJ entering the twilight of his prime, it’d be a thing of beauty.

then again, if Locker sucks, well, that was the risk and the team took it, time to rebuild.

23... I repeat 23... that is the number of Titans players with 1 year deals!

You say the Titans NEED CJ? Well the way I see it, the Titans NEED to be able to have a 53 man roster! If people like you were running the Titans FO, they would not be able to afford a complete team, let alone a team that could compete. It takes a team my friend, not a single player, not just a “Playmaker”, but a TEAM!

Defense wins Championships…
Chemistry, Hard Work and Dedication Trumps Talent…

Try this… if you have the new Madden or last years Madden, please, really actually try this…

Start a franchise with the Titans, set the difficulty to normal, medium, whatever. Now… put all of your starters on the bench, QB, O-Line, WR’s, DB’s, EVERYONE… bench them and put the 2nd and 3rd string guys in the Starting Lineup. Now of course, put the “Playmaker” in a PM or RB or whatever position you/he thinks he is. (you know what I mean, use CJ…)

Now if you are man enough, play the season out… and come back and report your win/loss record and CJ’s stats while your at it…don’t cheat, don’t play on easy… really see what you can do with just CJ and report back…

If your not man enough, just try it for a game or 4… see what happens! I would be really interested to hear if anyone tries! I’m going to, kind of… I have Madden 08, so I’ll just make a 99 Over ALL CJ3K to test it myself

by TNTitan09 on Aug 21, 2011 3:45 PM CDT reply actions

So, my Franchise is set up! Here are the details! With Opening day in the books!

2008 Madden
ALL-PRO Difficulty
I created CJ99 as I call him… he’s 99 on EVERYTHING!
Switched in the scrubs on the depth chart and skipped the preseason.

So, here we are Week One in the 1 man franchise I have.

Titans vs Jaguars

Through the first half, it has been a tough game. The Jags defense seemed stout as they were in the backfield often and fast! The Jags moved the ball downfield methodically to reach the End Zone and score a rushing TD.

My first offensive series was moving along until I attempted to make a pass… sacked quickly. Drive fizzled, punt.

Jags drive down the field again and get inside the 10 yard line… Donnie Nickey stops the drive with an awesome end zone interception and running it out to the 25 or so.

Back on offense, 3 runs, 3 downs, and out…punt

Jags moving again… DEFENSIVE STUD Donnie Nickey pulls a Byron Leftwich pass away from the receiver using only one hand! I see what Fisher liked so much!

Titans drive about 20 yards to set up for a field goal. It is a long one, and comes up just a yard or so short… Jags get ball back with 30 seconds and score on a field goal of their own, I put it on me… bad call, I should have punted!

END OF HALF
Titans 0 – Jags 10

Second Half, Titans get the ball and CJ Breaks one to the HOUSE!! We are back in the game!

Jags take the next drive for a field goal.

Titans 3 and out, same for the Jags next drive.

Titans ball and CJ running hard… 8 or 9 plays and TD! Titans are up by 1 point with just over 2 minutes to go!

Jags ball and defense is playing strong… until Fred taylor breaks one to the house… just 12 seconds now remain and the Jags send in the offense to go for 2… Byron Leftwich walks right in… go figure.

Jags up 21-14

Titans ball 8 seconds… screen pass to CJ gets eaten up, timeout… 2 seconds… do I run CJ and try to get 80 yards or go for the hail mary with CJ being the target…. I figure I have to try right? The fans would kill me if I ran the ball with 80 to go and 2 seconds on the clock… so Hail Mary it is!

Here is the call by Mike Keith… the Titans are lined up 3 wide with CJ in the backfield, just 2 seconds remain in the 2008 season opener… Rattay motions CJ left, looking for the long ball here….ball set, snapped… QB sacked! John Henderson just blew by the line and Rattay never had a chance… that’s it folks, despite CJ’s tremendous game today, it was just not enough to overcome the Sparkle Kittens"

Titans 14
Jags 21

Donnie Nickey with 2 sacks, 2 INT’s and a few tackles for a loss.
Rattay 3 of 6 for 12 yards and 1 INT, Sacked 5 Times… he had NO chance!
CJ was the star for today with 27 for 231 and 2 TD’s

by TNTitan09 on Aug 21, 2011 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

ok, so there are 23 one year deals on the team. let’s go over some of them.

Ken Amato: backup center
Patrick Bailey: bench riding linebacker
Dave Ball: rotational lineman
Cortland Finnegan: actually useful,
Jacob Ford: rotational lineman
Vincent Fuller: replaceable nickelback at best
Justin Gage: lol
Michael Griffin: sometimes useful, sometimes not
Lavelle Hawkins: lol
William Hayes: rotational lineman (see a pattern yet?)
Stafon Johnson: practice squad
Jason Jones: TBD
Mike Otto: meh, versatile I guess.
Barrett Ruud: part of the future? doubtful.
Jake Scott: actually useful
Tim Shaw: lol
Craig Stevens: replaceable backup tight end
Fernando Velasco: what is he the fourth center now or something?

how many of these fools were you planning on bringing back?

and then did you really just try to compare Madden to real life? come on man, just take a second to understand why that’s ridiculous.

the FO isn’t going to pay CJ to the point where they can’t still sign other players. and not scrap heap players either, Reinfeldt is a smart dude, he’s going to try to bring back the players that deserve to come back. can’t all of the players on that list be replaced? only a few are above league average.

at least 5 or 6 need to be resigned

Shaw and Bailey are SP team’s beasts. Finny, Griff, Stevens, Scott, and Ford are all decent players and should be brought back for the right price. I know Griff keeps messing up but He’s had 3 D Coordinators in 4 years. Also I like the prospect of resigning Babineaux, he seems to be a ball hawk.

Really? So you don't see the need for depth?

And you don’t think that we need our…

STARTING SAFETY
STARTING CB
STARTING MLB
STARTING DE

see a pattern here?

And if Madden is sooo very different, why are coaches deferring the Kickoff many times now days to start on D and get the ball back in the second half? THAT was never done before at the rate it happens today… In Madden, it has been that way since about day one… I mean it is supposed to be “Football Simulation”… kind of like those things that pilots might use… what are they called again? Oh yeah… “Flight Simulators”!

by TNTitan09 on Aug 21, 2011 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I do see the need for depth, but it’s not like we’re losing four all-world players here. at least three of them should be replaced pretty easily, either through the draft or through free agency.

if Madden were anything like real life, every schmuck on the leaderboards would be employed by the NFL by now. flight simulators are used for preparing pilots for real-life flying. Madden is used for entertainment. there’s the difference.

Ringer, et. al. don't compare to CJ

But that isn’t the comparison the front office should be making.

The question should be is the money used on CJ’s contract better used to upgrade 3-4 positions?

There is no question that none of these RB’s will individually provide the production CJ can. But can a stable of above average backs give you the same overall production as one great back and a back up? A lot of the statistical evidence suggests they can. And if the money saved upgrades positions of need, (especially positions where the drop off from top to bottom is greater and where the individual is much more important) then it probably benefits the team in the long run.

I’m not saying the Titans shouldn’t give him a deserved contact ($21-24 guaranteed) or that they should trade him. But if he doesn’t lower his demands the FO should feel pressured to give in just to get him on the field this year.

The good thing about this situation is that you are at least getting to see Ringer/Harper working with the first team offense and against first team defenses so you get a more realistic evaluation than you normally would in a preseason game.

I hate we as fans are subject to have to,sit through all this

I just wish somebody would FUCKING BLINK, nobody who matters is actually adressing the situation themselves. It’s been pandering to the media, and acting like d-bags, both sides, ok… either they need to cut the shit and get the deal done, or tell us the truth about the whole skipping camp thing, I want to have our pieces ready for Jacksonville, and I’m sorry but CJ, best player we have… we never tried to give him a reason to stay, show him we’re trying to win, pay him more…. make his bed…. drive his ass to work everyday… do something man, I’m tired it of talking about the money like my opinion matters. Pay what we can and get on with it fukkers

Last night's performance doesn't mean we don't need CJ.

But the future welfare of the teams mean we don’t need CJ if he wants Larry Fitzgerald money. Hopefully he doesn’t, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he does.

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

by TennesseeTyrants on Aug 21, 2011 6:42 PM CDT reply actions

Reading NFL.com's article about CJ

It said the CJ camp threw out an offer and the Titans rejected, so must’ve been outrageous. Bud Adams is tired of the holdout clearly by what he said. Reinfeldt said the team isn’t fielding trade offers for CJ. I’m beginning to think this problem will last into the season ….

The link ^ if anyone wants to read it.

The play of Ringer and Harper to me has very little impact on Chris Johnson's situation.

Even if they looked terrible, you still don’t handicap your team by paying CJ ridiculous amounts of cash.

WTF: Appropriate initials given my thought processes.
