Tennessee Titans Daily Links: His Name Is Ruud Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 The Titans didn't just sign Barrett Ruud to play MLB, they brought him in to be the on the field leader of the front seven. Ruud was the signal caller in Tampa Bay, and Jovan Haye has some great things to say about his former-and-once-again teammate:

"He’s a smart guy, one of the smartest linebackers I’ve been around," Haye said. "A middle linebacker has to be able to line everybody up around him, and when I played with him, he knew everything. We rarely had any busts. I know he’ll get our guys in the right place."

Tennessee_titans_30x21 David Boclair asks if Matt Hasselbeck is ready to mentor Jake Locker in the same way Brett Favre helped out Hasselbeck back in the day. By all accounts Hasselbeck is completely on board with helping Locker learn how to prepare, endure and overcome the rigors of the NFL schedule. That's a damned good thing for Titans fans to be hearing after the past 5 years.

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 One Bucs beat-writer fears that the departure of Ruud could stifle the improvement of their defense.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Leroy Harris is giddy and ready to get back on the field now that he's locked up for two more years.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Athlon sports breaksdown the fantasy value of your 2011 Tennessee Titans.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Former Titan DT DE Marcus Howard caught on with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL.Howard spent all of last year on the IR, but his 6'0", 245 lbs frame isn't a great fit for Gray's new system.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Jamaal Anderson ended up signing with the Colts in a move I'm guessing isn't a huge endorsement of Jerry Hughes.

Hasselbeck used to joke

About how Favre was a great guy, but never really taught Hasselbeck anything, at least not on purpose.

I'm not opinionated. I just have an ego that you can't handle.

I believe it

I’ve wondered about A-Rodgers and how much of a mentor Favre was to him vs. his own ability. Sure there is A LOT you could learn from Favre’s game, but something about him doesn’t strike me as the best mentor for a young QB entering into the league…

It seems we've pulled a 180 on our LB core

Not exactly from terrible to awesome but from run first to pass first. Still think we need a LB who can lay the hammer because Ayers and Rudd are not those guys. But they are def upgrades from last year. Hope next year we can replace Spoon with a guy who feasts on RB’s flesh.

Ideally they should be able to do both.

Not sure why you think Ayers and Ruud can’t tackle RBs.

Didn't say they can't tackle

said they’re not a hammer, and I stick by the sentiment. Not a knock on the aquisitions, I really like what we are trying to do with our LB squad.

Ayers is huge

If hes blowing up Craig Stevens he can certainly blow up RBs.

Really? I think Ruud is more similar to Tulloch than a 180.

Both are tackling machines, from what I’ve read Ruud is the better coverage guy, but has the same knock as Tulloch had/has…lack of big plays.

Good evening. I'm Ron Burgundy, and here's what's happening in your world tonight.

I meant 180 in terms of philosophy

We have picked up two outstanding pass coverage guys who both have question marks in terms of run stuffing. And yes I know Ruud’s stats he is a tackle machine but from what I’ve heard most of his tackles were five yards deep. Like I said 180 from run first LB’s to pass first LB’s…and seeing as our division is Peyton and Shaub I like the switch. Still we have no hammer on our LB squad

It's all a piece with the work on the D-Line.

Get bigger on the line and faster at LB. What we had before was the opposite of that, and they were getting blown off the ball with regularly.

This

If we can have a giant line that can stop the run, and a good coverage LB core to support the secondary, I could care less about sacks because they won’t be able to run or throw consistently enough to sustain drives.

In theory at least..

Ruud has many more big plays than Tulloch

Ruud has 17 passes defended, 6 INTs, 5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles in the past three years.

Tulloch has 9 passes defended, 3 INTs, 3 sacks, and 0 forced fumbles over the same time period.

So, Ruud is much better pass defender and similar run defender as tulloch…he is an upgrade

by shawneriksmith on Aug 2, 2011 3:20 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I haven't watched Ruud play closely...

But you are jumping to conclusions. Ruud’s “big play” stats are better. That’s all this says. WAY too many variables in play to make such a big statement.

by oilertitan on Aug 2, 2011 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

When a guy has double the number of big plays as another guy over a 3 year span

Then that guy makes more big plays than the other guy…that is not jumping to conclusions.

3 years is a long span to be outperformed…the “variables” even out over that timeframe

by shawneriksmith on Aug 2, 2011 4:36 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

they may have different responsibilities

one could be more run-oriented, the other more for pass defense.

by oilertitan on Aug 2, 2011 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions

the guys tackle stats were something like 160 190 209 160 plus more big plays and better at pass coverage

Yeah Baby UPGRADE

August

Howard wasn’t a DT
He was a DE, and about the same size as Robert Mathis, and last year we switched him over to LB

fixed

If Ruud is expected to be a leader and signal caller...

why was he signed to only a 1-year deal? It seems like you would want to lock-up a proven veteran for multiple years if your expecting them to also fill a leadership role.

by ttu_hicks on Aug 2, 2011 12:46 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah I am not diggin' the whole 1 year deals

but someone mentioned it might be because the cap raises next year so they could sign him to a bigger contract…? I hope

Maybe Ruud only wanted a 1yr deal

Because of the shortened free agency period

These guys just want to get deals done and then be open up for a regular length free agency period next year.
