Wyatt: Tennessee Titans Release DT Tony Brown
Jim Wyatt just tweeted that the Tennessee Titans have released defensive tackle Tony Brown. It really is terrible that he wasn't ever able to get his knee right because he was a really good player for a couple of years. He even had some flashes of being really good early last season but couldn't get the knee right for the long haul.
You could tell the Titans had a feeling that Brown wasn't going to be able to be back when they drafted 2-3 defensive tackles in the draft (Karl Klug is a tweener but probably plays DE for Jerry Gray).
This also puts a big spotlight on Sen'Derrick Marks. He was one of those athletic players that Jeff Fisher loved to draft. They said at the time he was a project. Well 2011 is year three of his career. It should become evident whether or not he can play this year.
[UPDATE]- Wyatt says Brown failed a physical for the Titans.

Its time for S. Marks to step it up!
Sad to see it end for Brown this way, but refreshing to give the young klds the keys!

This sucks
Brown was all heart, but with us losing Wash it makes sense. If he isn’t healthy and doesn’t have the coach that literally made his career….guess we kind of had to make the move. Hope he gets healthy and finds a new team. Will never forget 08 when him an Haynes were the most dynamic tackle duo in the league and really in NFL history. Week in and week out they punished other teams lineman, RB, and QB.

Why wouldn't they at least try to trade him?
Weird…. hopefully they have their eye on someone to replace him or something…
The Saint of MCM
My guess is that
he wouldn’t pass a physical for anyone so they couldn’t trade him.

he didn't pass it..wyatt just said it
“The #Titans told Brown’s agent he failed a physical and the team “wanted to go in another direction.”

$4 mm in cap savings this year. ~$5 mm next year.
I don’t know if there are any penalties associated with that.
Those who were concerned Hasselbeck’s contract and it’s impact on free agency need to take a deep breath. Cutting Vince, Brown, and hopefully Hope will give us more than enough room to fill the pertinent holes in free agency.
but cutting cap by getting rid of starters
who have no worthy heir means you will spend money to replace them (Hope), or just get less talented at the position (Brown)

the problem is not that he's not talented
it’s that he cant pass a physical.
I wonder if it was a problem with his knee again?

That's not necessarily true.
Chris Hope is owed $6 mm this year. I would think a guy like Michael Huff would have similar cap implications this year.
right
so you don’t really save anything is what I mean. you just put the money back into the same position with a different player. doesn’t help us get a pass rusher or a veteran linebacker or a decent DT not named jason jones

We did draft two DTs in the draft. I presume some of that had to do with the plan to cut Tony Brown.
We also have Haye, Jones, and Marks.
With the shift to more of a 3-4/4-3 hybrid, there will be less emphasis on a disruptive 3-tech DT.
After QB signings, and with the release of Brown and possibly Hope, we’re at close to $20 mm in cap room. Cut Justin Gage and we’re at $23 MM. I think that’s plenty of room to fill the holes we’ll need to.
I think at the end of the day that the Hasselbeck signing could preclude us from signing a handful or reliable backups, but nothing more. Like you’ve mentioned, there is an opportunity cost associated with his acquisition. After all, teams must spend 99% of the cap this year and next. But, I think his value to Locker’s development far out weighs the benefits provided by a couple of middle of the road free agents over the next two years.
They must be really high on Marks then. I´m not that confident in his potential.
I´d like a lot if the titans went after Aubrayo Franklin, Toomie Harris or Mebane. Probably won´t happen.
i would certainly hope
that his old college coach would be high on him

Marks left school after the '08 season.
Rocker arrived at Auburn in ’09.
No doubt he has some inside scoop on him, but he never coached the kid….
true, but he's also a 7th rounder
Not much risk there. If he sucks, he won’t even make the team. 7th round, “questionable motive for drafting” worked out last year with Mariani.

Would cost too much.

Really sorry to hear this
I wish the NFL and colleges would back off a bit on the sizes of linemen so they can play longer.
calling on Jovan Haye
you weigh over 300 lbs now, and you say your specialty is stopping the run. Gray’s system is said to be much better for you than Washburn’s style, so prove it. Please earn the the $3 mil you are owed this year, and be the DT we expected when you were signed

Or Amobi Okoye from Houston
The former first rounder has received permission to shop his name in a trade. He’s unhappy about the switch to 3-4 and wants to be a 4-3 DT somewhere. I could see him in a Titans jersey replacing Fat Tony.
Jenkins isn't that spectacular
I would love to take Okoye away from HOU or any player away from those wretched texans!

kind of a paradox no?
Why would we want anyone from a wretched team/def? Just askin
PLEASE READ THIS
This is my last warning. If our TEN FRONT OFFICE, Dallas, San Fran, or the Jets do not Sign Nnamdi Asomugha for whatever he wants. OUR Nemesis; HOUSTON; WILL SCOOP HIM UP & Pay whatever amount he desires. If this happens; we might as well throw in the white towel & Hand over the AFC South until the next season. Yes we got Locker & Hasselbeck which filled our QB depth. BUT WE STILL have TWO HOLES in our Defense. STRONG SAFETY & CORNERBACK. I understand we can not afford to sign him; but we can NOT AFFORD to allow the Texans to sign him!
Since we are out of this race...
There is still Johnathon Joseph & Ray Edwards that can help our D…

if we get him we just throw to the recievers he isn’t covering.

Man, I hate to see him go.
He was one of my favorite players.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"
