Tennessee Titans Daily Links: End Of The Lockout Could End Hope Edition

The Commish might finally have a legit reason to be all smiles.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Looks like both sides have agreed to a deal that will end the lockout, and the signatures to make it official should happen today. Still, the existential dread in the pit of my stomach won't be gone until it's signed and the padlocks come off of the gates at Baptist Sports Park.
Tennessee_titans_30x21 Derrick Morgan was officially cleared by Dr. James Andrews to go full speed again. Morgan was off to a red hot start at the beginning of last season before he hit the IR with an ACL tear. Hopefully Morgan can pick right back up where he left off, which will really help offset the likely-impending departure of Jason Babin.
Tennessee_titans_30x21 Chris Hope is due a very hefty salary for next year, and it could be large enough to prompt the Titans to part ways with the Titans' most veteran defensive starter. Hope's play really fell of last year, but he was the victim of some shoddy play around him and an overmatched coordinator as well. While the team could save some money by cutting Hope, you have to wonder if it's really the wisest move considering the value of veterans in the compresses offseason training program we're about to enter. My bet is that Hope is here for 2011, but plays elsewhere in 2012 no matter how good or bad next year goes.

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 John Clayton and Adam Schefter are hearing that transactions could begin as early as tomorrow if all of this heat around the new CBA results in a signature today.
Tennessee_titans_30x21 Just linking this to point out the weird ESPN.com rumor that the Titans could be involved in a three-way deal that ends up with Cortland in Arizona and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie... I'm guessing this has something to do with moving VY.
Tennessee_titans_30x21 Myron Rolle is putting on his football camp down in Florida.
Tennessee_titans_30x21 It's very possible that we linked to this last week, but The Tennessean has 10 issues the Titans will have to deal with once the lockout ends.

Has he justified being a Top 10 pick yet?

I’ll be honest, I don’t really follow the Raiders outside of laughing at some of their ludicrous draft picks in April.

Good evening. I'm Ron Burgundy, and here's what's happening in your world tonight.

by ronburgundy7427 on Jul 25, 2011 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Definitely not. That's why I like him.

The talent is there. I know it’s there, as I saw it first hand in college.

Given that, you have to consider the symptom. Is he just suddenly lazy? Is it the system in Oakland? Should he be moved back to his college position of SS? Is it the culture in Oakland?

Huff had an uptick in production last year, but not enough to warrant “top 10” money. I see value in these sorts of situations. I thought there was a lot of value in the Babin acquisition, who was also a former 1st round pick that was used incorrectly in different systems. I think Huff could be signed for above average safety money, but have the potential to perform at a top 5-10 level.

by SuperHorn on Jul 25, 2011 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions

That I could see.

Another sort of “reclamation project” with a modest deal. I could go for that, maybe playing with his old college teammate would help too.

College and the NFL are different. Just sayin.

We all tend to think the players at our college are better than they are.

Totally agree, but at a position like Safety, one that relies so heavily on athleticism and instincts, top 10 evaluations are generally going to be fairly accurate.

Not always, but generally. That is just purely from a talent/athleticism standpoint. Moreover, last year he showed that he can play at a very high level even in the NFL.

Just looking at his history, it looks like he may have been unhappy in Oakland, and unwilling to put in the work as a result in 2007-2008. Then, things picked up in ’09. And, he was a second team All-Pro last year.

The concern there is obviously whether it’s just a big contract that’s motivating him. That “problem” isn’t uncommon with most Free Agents, though. The real appeal to me is that he can come in here and work with one of the best defensive back coaches in the world (Jerry Gray). Even if Gray can’t devote typical DB coach time with him, I still think he can do wonders for his game.

by SuperHorn on Jul 25, 2011 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't neccessarily think that a guy who was unhappy in Oakland will be happy here.

We lost more games than Oakland last year. We could conceivably lose more than them this year. The Titans really aren’t a destination team at the moment.

Oakland is a pretty hopeless place.

All things being equal, I’d be shocked if any player, Huff included, would choose Oakland over Nashville.

by SuperHorn on Jul 25, 2011 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh the problem isn't being chosen over Oakland.

But we are definitely not being chosen over alot of places.

I think ANYBODY can be unhappy in Oakland

cuz they were a genuinely bad team, there seems to be NO organization with what they’re doing, their head coaches have all been NUTS!!! and, none of their players seem to fit whatever system they’re trying to implement…
At least we have a direction, and we seem to know how to achieve it

All for it.

We’re going to have some serious cap space to play with.

WTF: Appropriate initials given my thought processes.

by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Jul 25, 2011 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure about that?

Yes, we’ll get the $12 million from (FINALLY!) releasing Young, last report I saw I think we were $10 million under, so roughly $20 million under once that release happens. Have to sign rookies so take that money out, I think they may finally extend CJ so take money out for that, and several of their own FAs. I think we’ll have some money, but maybe not as much as you might think. Although that new floor for spending is going to be interesting, 99% of the cap this year I think?

Good evening. I'm Ron Burgundy, and here's what's happening in your world tonight.

by ronburgundy7427 on Jul 25, 2011 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Keep in mind that Hope had a big cap number last year, too.

Not paying him the $6 mil he’s due this year would give us plenty of room to sign Huff.

by SuperHorn on Jul 25, 2011 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

How did I forget Hope.

We’ll have room to play with, but I don’t think it’s going to change Reinfeldt’s M.O…though again, the new salary floor could make things different. And since Huff could be had for a modest-to-moderate deal, I could see it. I was speaking more in general terms that we’re not going to have the money of the Bucs and such.

Good evening. I'm Ron Burgundy, and here's what's happening in your world tonight.

Do you think Huff will be overpaid in free agency?

I do. There are several teams looking for safeties, and Huff is one of the best out there..

by criollo_pcg on Jul 25, 2011 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

That's all relative.

People are still going to be finding their way in the new free agency with this salary floor. It’s going to force teams to spend more, thus driving up FA contracts. So, this year, I think we’ll see contracts that are higher than usual. And, as fans, we’ll react with typical sticker shock.

But, IMO, I think the market for these contracts will continue to creep up as the player FA market reacts. To your question, he’ll get “overpaid” relative to the past 5 years, but I think that when we look back 5 years from now Huff’s deal in 2011 could look like a real value.

by SuperHorn on Jul 25, 2011 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions

I would like him on the titans.

And i agree with you on seeing a good future for this player. But i think it will take a really big effort to sign him, because demand will be high.

idk, Hope seems really motivated to play for us

if he can prove that last year was just bad scheming then we have a winner… but we should try and get the younger guys on the field SOMETIMES

You read my mind...

I was thinking R.J. while reading the comments above….BUT…one thing’s for sure….Hope has GOT to go….if he had been tearing it up last 2 years, it would be one thing…but he was getting his A$$ handed to him on a regular basis. I say we should use RJ and spend the extra $$$ on Hasselbeck. QB should be more of a priority than a DB.

I'm with Bonzos on this one.

Cortland’s play has really dropped off over the past couple of years. Against the best in the league (two of which we play twice a year (A. Johnson, R. Wayne), I’m definitely not comfortable leaving him alone in man coverage.

He’s good, but he’s not top 10. And, at this point, I feel just as comfortable with Verner/McCourty in single man coverage as I do Finny.

by SuperHorn on Jul 25, 2011 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I am not going to argue against personal opinion

I still think he is top 10 talent, especially when he is playing with a D-coordinator that isn’t playing checkers in a chess match.
That being said, he’s had his 2 years of the defense being a mess and him getting exposed too much. If his game doesn’t step back up to his previous elite level, then I will agree with both of you.

The Saint of MCM

by StPrattrick on Jul 25, 2011 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt given the coordinator change.

But, I should at least point out that guys like Asomugha can play in an absolute hell hole and flourish. Elite corners can find ways to excel despite the environment.

That was the problem

Last year was the first year of his career he was facing the number one wideouts. He is a lockdown CB on basically all number 2 wr (excluding players like Malcom Floyd and Jenkins on ATL because their 6’6) but he just doesn’t match up against a lot of elite number one’s. IMO he is an elite number 2 cb if there is such ‘a thing. We need a number one..hopefully this kid cambell at 6’3 running a 4.3 can be a diamond in the rough by next year.
Really see no problem with dropping Finny back to SS and letting ATV be our nickel and special package guy.

Everyone was all about Gerald McRath before last season saying he was going to be the man and played so great in the 09 season. I didn’t know what the hype was about for him but everyone seemed to buy into it. I stated as much on the site. We all know how that turned out….McGrath sucks!

Just want accurate reporting and opinions...

We could all sit here and say Super bowl here we come and we have the best team ever…but when reality hits it just makes it worse…managing expectations is important.

I'd say all of my opinions on Morgan have been pretty well-based in reality

Nobody around here is giving Morgan 12 sacks just for walking through the door, but he was a top pick who showed a lot of skills in the short time he was healthy last year. That’s something to be excited about.

Is it a lock for a great performance next year? Of course not, but it’s his stellar-but-brief performance wasn’t meaningless, either.

Morgan's thing this year will be to STAY HEALTHY!!

We all know he’s got crazy skills…nobody could disagree with that…but…if (God forbid) he gets hurt again…..well….I don’t even want to think about it.

how is one serious injury

make him injury prone.
you can strain a hamstring by walking and taking a bad step up large stairs, or by getting off of a bus

were we not leading our division before our QB/Coach crisis

… were we not leading the league in sacks in the first half
were we not one of the best rushing offenses in the league
were we not beating teams through the pass as well
were we not getting solid play from every end of the spectrum
and did we not have one of the better special teams in the league

Crapshoot, not gonna happen, free agency dream:

us somehow getting Brandon Mebane. He’s a beast DT who weighs about 315 lbs. Apparently know for his versatility. Reinfeldt drafted him, and Gray coached at Seattle when he was there. I’d be so happy if we got him but there is just no way that we would

Logan Mankins
Why don’t you move to Wisconsin and make an album full of haunting acoustic love songs with light electronic flourishes?

Literally LMAO at this!!

Kluwe is now my most favorite punter EVER

His downfall parody is epic film
