2011 NFL Free Agency: Predicting Who Will Stay and Who Will Leave
By my count the Tennessee Titans have 10 guys from the 2010 roster that will be free agents whenever this stupid lockout is over and the free agency period opens. There are at least two guys, Bo Scaife and Randy Moss, that we can rule out right from the start. Mike Reinfeldt has already said that he doesn't see Moss fitting in the plans, and they have already dumped way more money into Scaife than he ever deserved.
The odds are pretty good that Jason Babin and Stephen Tulloch end up elsewhere, but I wouldn't say they are gone for sure. Babin is going to get offered big money from somebody, and his skill set doesn't fit as well with this staff as it did the previous one.
Tully will also more than likely get a pretty big offer from a team. Every other site out there says the Titans would be crazy not to retain Tulloch, but I still say that he isn't worth big money.
Jacob Ford is another guy that will probably get quite a bit of interest on the open market. He has proven that he can get after the passer but has some durability questions. Ford also might be a guy that doesn't really fit what this coaching staff is looking for. I wouldn't be surprised either way, but my gut is telling me that he ends up somewhere else.
Dave Ball is the third defensive end on this list, and I think he is the most likely to end up back with the team. He said he has been bulking up this offseason to fit the new scheme, and the Titans really can't afford to lose all three of these guys.
Leroy Harris is the only offensive lineman on the list. Mike Munchak has said that he likes Harris, and I expect him to be back assuming he doesn't get an offer the Titans don't want to match. I doubt that is the case based on how he played last year.
Ahmard Hall could go either way. He is probably the guy if the Titans won't to keep a fullback on the roster.
That brings us to MCM favorite Donnie Nickey. August will be crushed if he isn't retained.
Another special teamer, Tim Shaw, is a free agent. He didn't contribute on defense at all last year but was solid covering kicks and punts. He seems like a guy they would want to retain.

I would think we would keep either Babin or Tully but not both
So as you said, Babin doesn’t really fit into what we are trying to do here as much and he will be looking for a huge payday (aside from that he sounds like a douche) so let him walk.
Resign Tully, we should be trying to keep the 1 solid LB from last year.
Resign Ball or Ford, I would prefer Ball, I think he’s all around a better DE and is trying to do what it takes to fit into our defense next year.
Let Harris walk, move Amano back over to G and let Mathews battle it out for C position (couldn’t get any worse then last year)
Resign Hall, he’s an offensive leader and we need them right now.
Resign Shaw for Special Teams and LB depth.
Who should we look at to replace Scaife out of FA?? We are going to need another solid TE next year.

I say keep Harris
he’s better at C than Amano at C and G

This isn't the first time you've said this.
And I understand the sentiment. But Munchak didn’t give him that contract. The front office did. If he’s not playing well, he’s just not, and he needs to be benched.

I'm not implying that the choice to give him the giant contract was Thor's decision or not
My point is he has been paid very handsomely and he is a average/decent G, but not a very good Center. Move him back to the position that warranted said contract. If he ends up getting beaten out by someone better… then he gets benched, just like anyone else.
The Saint of MCM
Yeah, if he can play, then play him.
But I’m just contesting the idea that “We got to start Amano somewhere on the OL with that kind of contract.”
I don’t care if he’s making $100 million, if he sucks, and there’s someone better, play them.

Not sure
I ever had that impression either, but if he’s been blocking reasonably well they should resign him. We have enough OL concerns, don’t mess with run blocking FB.
I don’t remember from the mess that was last season how his blocking has been, though. Does FO rate FBs?
Re: Tulloch.
I just do not see the value in signing him to what will likely be a pretty moderate (not huge, but more than his production merits) deal. I just expect more “big plays” out of a starting LB, his production outside of being able to knock a guy down (and for all the tackles he’s made, I’d be curious to see where they took place; was he chasing someone downfield? coming up to the line and stuffing them? 5-10 yards from the line of scrimmage? Get on it, SuperHorn!) does not warrant any sort of re-signing.
Gray’s also talked about becoming more versatile on defense, I don’t think Tulloch fits the “versatile” label.

It really depends on what kind of contract he is asking for
that’s how I will determine which side of the fence I sit on for resigning him.
The Saint of MCM
I think people are being a little too dismissive of Tulloch's contributions.
There is no one on this roster that could have stepped in last year and produced 100+ tackles. MLB’s primary responsibility is run support, and Tulloch excelled in that department.
Fans want to release Tully without considering the consequences or alternatives. Who are we going to plug in? McRath? Curran?
If we had a promising up and comer waiting in the wings this might be a different discussion. But, we don’t. Tully is entering the best part of his career at age 26. Sign him to a 5 year deal that’s front loaded and gives us the ability to release him with little consequence in 3 years.
I completely agree.

Agree with all of this
He’s the best of whats left, that doesn’t mean we should let him walk because everyone after him (so far) has been terrible…. not including the rookies.

The way the year is shaping up to be a down one, I'd actually be ok with putting in a young guy.
Throw them into the fire, it’s a strong possibility that same scenario will happen at QB with a rookie, why not let one of the other rookie LBs or second-year guys get a shot?
I’m not trying to be a Tulloch hater, it is an impressive feat to get over 100 tackles in a season. Is it too much to ask for him to be able to cause some fumbles with a few of those tackles? I would be ok signing him to a modest deal that is front-loaded, but I expect him to get more on the open market.
…and if he is back, I agree with rothbard that pass coverage should not be something he is asked to do at all.
Good evening. I'm Ron Burgundy, and here's what's happening in your world tonight.

The whole thing about him not causing fumbles is odd to me.
Fumbles seem to be somewhat more random than say an interception, and also seem to have more to do with the player carrying the ball than the playing doing the hitting. To me.
For instance, we’ve talked about Adrian Peterson’s fumbling compared to CJ’s, etc. You rarely hear about the prolific fumble-causers on defense.
Now, interceptions are another thing. But his lack of interceptions only points to the obvious—he’s a liability in pass coverage.

Re:

Making changes just to make changes is not a good policy. I’ve seen these other guys play, whether it be preseason or otherwise, and I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that they aren’t an upgrade.
Tully has become a whipping boy of sorts around MCM, and I think it’s undeserved. He’s not perfect in coverage, but that can be mitigated by removing him from the Nickel package (ZOMG!). The dude is a tackling machine, though, which is the primary responsibility of the MLB. That will be very difficult to reproduce if we let him walk.
I think the most realistic alternative is McRath. Did you watch his pass coverage last year? Is that really an upgrade?
by SuperHorn on Jul 20, 2011 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I concur
Tully is probably in the top third of MLBs in the league…depending on the salary, we should re-sign him. He definitely has his flaws, but he also has a lot of positives. Sign him to a decent deal and continue to develop the other young LBs.
by shawneriksmith on Jul 20, 2011 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions
You're forgetting Mr. Free Agent.
What if a guy like Barrett Ruud is signed? Would you consider that an upgrade?
Tulloch has been extremely productive, and if we’re looking at him strictly as a run-stopping guy, it probably would be a good idea to bring him back. Perhaps I’m just blinded by the LBs who get all the publicity and get more sacks, INTs and whatnot. Again, IF the price is right (read: frontloaded, not too much in terms of numbers) I’m fine with him coming back, but I’m not going to be devastated if he’s not, nor will I be surprised if/when another team signs him.

i agree as well
usually MLBs responsibilities are just stopping the run, not covering TE’s thats either a S, NB, or OLB’s responsibility.
and of course an MLB willl be at a disadvantage vs a rb, some te’s, and wrs in speeds

I have no idea
Why would they give up on a young linebacker with experience? Did you hear something about this or are you just wondering due to his average performance last year?
I don't think they've given up
but I have read from a couple places that we plan to move Spoon to MLB, start Ayers, and the other starter will be an FA

This is what I would like to see, in order of priority
1. cut VY and Chris Hope
2. re-sign Tulloch or go after someone like Barrett Rudd.
3. Sign one of the good interior lineman that are available, I love the idea of signing Yanda that you guys had earlier
4. go after Michael Huff, I think he would solidify our secondary.
5. pray we can get a decent veteran QB that can tutor Locker, im hoping for Hasselbeck

Let Tully walk
He is terrible at everything but stopping the run, and seeing as this is now a pass first league his breed is going the way of the dinosaurs.
It’s very simple, no forced fumbles, no fumble recoveries, no INT’s. Why would anyone want this guy on our roster is beyond me. He is a liability in all aspects of the game except one, and even then he is not a hard hitter.
I’ll take trying out Curran for a year and then going to the FA or draft if he doesn’t work out over resigning him to any deal all day.
Dey what?
tully had atleast one INt and FF (during first jag game, i think)
and MLB are suppose to be the best run stoppers
