Jake Locker vs Oregon State 10/16/2010 - Full Edit - MCM Analysis
Here we go with round two of MCM group analysis for some of the only game film we'll have on Jake Locker for 6 weeks into the 2011 season possibly a couple of years. We started with a downer game against AZ State so we'll go ahead and take a look at one of Locker's/Huskies' better efforts. This game will give you many reasons to be excited about Locker's, but it also shows a few of the flaws opportunities in Locker's game. Some things that jump out to me:
- Pro - Locker looks like a beast throwing the football. His athleticism is palpable in this game. In fact, I must say he reminds me a little bit of Jay Cutler with the torque he gets off his shoulder.
- Con - He reminds me a little bit of Jay Cutler. It's not quite as egregious as some of Cutler's moments, but his decision making skills come into question during sequences in the first half. His ability and tendency to use his legs seem to put him in situations where fumbling is an issue. Locker's superior athletic ability might convince of attempting plays that should not be attempted.
- Pro - The accuracy issue that "plagues" Locker doesn't seem to present in this game. A slightly bloated state line: 21/35 with 286 yds, 5tds, 1int. The wide receivers have a solid game but there's still a few big drops in this one.
- Pro - Yeah another pro, I can't find much to not like about Locker's play in this game besides a fumble and some throwing mechanics on a few passes. This game is a perfect example of Locker's mental and physical mettle. Washington is put in several dire situations throughout the game and Locker responds in clutch. I really believe Locker's mental maturity might be his biggest strength coming into the NFL.
*Despite a decent first half effort, Locker's offensive line turns into a total sieve in the second half. Locker seems to play the game faster than everyone else on offense and I'm sure getting constantly pummeled helped culture that part of him.

This is pretty awesome. Way too analytical for me, but awesome nonetheless.

I get that same Cutler feeling about Locker
I see Locker as a not cocky, more athletic, but slightly less arm strength Cutler.
So, just like Cutler needed a little coaching, so does Locker, but he has all the ability to do it.
Even though it came against a poorly ranked defense, this is by far my favourite Locker tape to watch.
There are a few common themes once again in this one: Very good outside the pocket, still throws high on his passes occasionally, manages to keep his head up and move around despite terrible protection.
From this game:
He seems to up his game in the redzone. They play calls seem a bit simpler but still, redzone efficiency is good. I think SuperHorn had a stat on that too that supports that.
The INT at 5:20 is a bad mistake. That needs to be stopped immediately.
I like that between this game and a few others, Locker’s had a few ‘signature’ wins. Close games were he stepped up and led his team to victory. Hopefully he has that “it” factor.

Locker's pocket awareness is probably the thing I like the most about him
He stands in the pocket with pretty steady feet even while the defensive line gets a constant push and the pocket is pretty small…it’s really impressive for a guy with only a couple of years being in a pro-style offense.
He has made a lot of throws from the pocket with defenders barreling down on him (and he did that with broken ribs)…I did not see the same thing from some other QBs in this draft (mainly Gabbert).

I voted C
but that was due to his 3 turnovers. He has to hold on to the ball better. As for his passing that would have been a solid B. I think he looks great on roll outs, most of his passes were fairly accurate, but his WR’s cant catch a cold.
There were a few pass plays where it appeared he left his feet during the delivery of the football. I would like to see him slide and get his feet set instead. Though the one instance on the goal line, the pocket collapsed and there did not look like much room to manuver.
so to save some words and time on future Locker analysis posts
We should now state that his OL was turrible and full of knuckleheads that couldn’t block a HS DLine

I think you did a very solid job with this. there are very few folks I’ve seen on SBN, let alone this site, that can match SuperHorn in terms of amateur player evaluation.

Nope don't feel that way
Yours and Superhorn’s have two different audiences.
There are some who likes very detailed info and heavy in analysis which would appreciate Superhorn’s post.
But there also some, like me, who just wants to see video, grade the performance and explain why, and see if the others agree/disagree.
Also, with your way, you could post the next video faster, I can’t wait to see the next one.

No need to stop posting.
As Pinoy pointed out, I think they fill different needs for MCM’rs.
My analysis will be a little more OCD, which some may like, and others may not. Moreover, I think your format is a little more conducive to discussion. When I saw your post go up, I was about halfway though the first half, which took me ~2 hours to get done, at that point there was no turning back.
Last, my analysis of Locker’s games has as much to do with an MCM contribution as it does my own education. By breaking down each play individually, it’s giving me a much different perspective.
If you're really committed
One of his offensive lineman (Ben Ossai) his junior year uploaded the coaching tape (endzone camera and full field camera) of several of his games. It gives you a lot more context to each individual play. The one thing that you’ll immediately realize is that there are times when literally no one is open. (even in 4 WR sets)
http://www.youtube.com/user/ossai09#p/u
I’ve watched all of them already. You can see that Locker isn’t a finished product (junior), but he makes multiple reads and makes good decisions.
Great video
Thanks for the link!
