Sorry guys but I am not drinking kool aide on this years crop of QB's.
And thats where the discussion of Best player available or team needs comes into question.
I will argue for best player available, and I will get to this in a minute.
Most likely Gabbert and Newton will be gone by 8. Thats okay I dont like either. Cam has character issues, is he VY part 2?, is he a one hit wonder? Too many questions, plus will his dad have to get kickbacks?
Gabbert? His name is Blaine. Need I say more? Just kidding. But seriously, Blaine Gabbert? No one knew who he was in December why should we care now? I know thats not a great reason but I just dont like him.
Check this: 16 touchdowns, 9 interceptions. 2010 totals. That sucks. And he was in a quarterback friendly spread Offense. You know what also sucked? His stats in big games and under pressure: his completion percentage drops to under 50% when pressured. Nebraska's pass rush rattled him in a week 8 loss (Nebraska 31- Missouri 17); finished the game 18 of 42 (43%) for 199 yards (4.7 yards per attempt) with 1 touchdown, 1 interception and took 6 sacks. He Lacked 4th quarter magic; no standout performance to lead Missouri to an upset and his last game of his college career he threw a bad interception due to a poor decision late in the 2010 Insight Bowl loss versus Iowa; could not lead a comeback.
A couple guys fall in love with a guy and everyone else jumps on the bandwagon. And to be honest with you I think the case is true for every QB in this draft. (I could list the cons on all these guys but thats too tedious, you do the work and look up the negatives on each guy in the top 6, none are a franchise QB in my opinion)
That is why I am going to argue that the Titans take the best player available. We have too many needs to not draft the "cant miss" guy with our first couple picks.
So without further adieu here are my suggestions for our first 2 picks.
If for some crazy reason one of these four falls to us then I say grab em. (Heck I never thought Derrick Morgan would fall to us at 16 so crazier things have happened.)
If we got anyone of these guys I know we would all be ecstatic. But now its time to slap Tinkerbell and snap out of fantasy land; the draft won't go down this way.
Everyone and their mother has us picking Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn , including Mel Kiper Jr,. who looks like he's wearing his mothers wig by the way. Why? We've had our share of questionable character picks, VY and Pacman. I think we are all a little bit weary of Nick Fairley. Not only does his character issues worry us but so does his most recent workouts and the one year resume in college. I say PASS.
So where does that leave us? Some say Jake Locker, QB, Washington but that would be the reach of the century. Plus I already said, there are zero quarterbacks who are "cant miss" and I dont think any of them can lead us to the promise land. 17 touchdowns, 9 interceptions. 2010 stats for Locker. Hey at least thats 1 more TD than Gabbert. (But 9 of those 17 TDs were in 2 games!!) But he has such potential!! So you think he'll have better production in the NFL? He is not accurate. One of the least accurate of the top 6 QBs.
Okay here is where I take best player available and still meet some Titans needs. These may not be our top tier needs but they are still needs.
Why? Prince and Julio are much cooler names than Blaine. ha ha.
Both are STUDS. One of them should be there at 8. Both are good character, team guys. Both have great speed. Prince is a lock down CB, who some have higher on their draft boards than Patrick Peterson. Our secondary sucks. I love Finnegan but he had a bad year, which year is the norm for him? His probowl year or his getting whipped by Andre year? Getting a lock down CB like Prince makes us better right away...no doubt about it.
Julio Jones has had awesome workouts on a broken foot. Nuff said. Okay, plus he's just good...very good. 4.4 40, can turn on a dime, glue for hands, great route runner and blocks exceptionally well which helps CJ get back to CJ25K. Why Jones when its not a huge need? Ask Bill Polian of the Colts, saw him on NFL channel suggesting his picking BPA method has paid huge dividends....they got both Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne as best players available and not necessarily to fill a huge need. To me Julio Jones and Prince for that matter are locks for great players in the NFL.
Okay...let me wrap this up quickly.
We now move into the 2nd round. And again, instead of getting Andy Dalton,Christian Ponder, Colin Kaepernick, or Ryan Mallet, who all have issues. We again pick BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE.
In the dozens of drafts I've seen, all the guys I list below at some point or another are available at 39. (Granted not all drafts have all these guys available at 39, some do, some dont...the point being having anyone one of them would be a good pick in my opinion)
If just one of these guys are available at 39 then we've had a great first 2 rounds. Combine Prince Amukamara with one one these guys: (Or Julio Jones)
Wouldnt that make you a very happy Titan fan? It would me. Getting either Prince or Julio combined with one of the above LB, DL guys would be legit.
And for what its worth....who really expects Kerry Collins or Rusty Smith to lead us to more than 4-6 wins next year? Now who really expects any of the top 6 QBs in this draft to lead us to more than 4-6 wins? Not me. I'm not expecting playoffs for 2011. Even if we get a decent free agent or keep Vince Young I still don't see us making the playoffs.
Bottom line: Lets put some guys on our roster who are more certain to make us better for the future and for me that does not includethe over rated QBs with our first 2 picks. I would prefer we get a veteran QB when ever this lock up ends.
Heck if Andy Dalton or someone else falls in the third then that would be just dandy!
Who knows, maybe I am totally stupid...I don't care. I just want to win and get the best players. What say you?
