Around SBN: The Most Dangerous Division in Sports

Speechless.

Note: I've decided to post this in the FanPosts because honestly, I don't want first-time visitors to see this and roll out after seeing what I've got to say here. It's not gonna be pretty.

So here's the deal. I'm not envious of NFL players because they've got money. I'm not envious of them because they're revered as icons. No, it's much more simple than that. I'm envious of NFL players because they do something that very few people have the talent to do; obviously, they play football for a living. Honestly, how much better can it get? The monster salary and having people worship the ground you walk on sounds awesome, but the fact that they're getting paid at all to do something that I'm sure many of you, myself included, would do for free? That's the best part of it all.

However, there are some players who just don't get it. They just don't seem to be able to process that what they've got in front of them is an opportunity to represent their families, their home towns, their schools, and most importantly, themselves on the biggest stage in the United States and they treat it like a huge joke. Wanna know something? That pisses me off.

Star-divide

From the first time I stepped on a football field, I knew it was what I wanted to do when I was grew up. Now, those dreams of playing in the NFL or even getting a full Division I scholarship are beginning to fade. The chance of me going to play for a Division I football program on a scholarship are pretty slim. D-II is still an option, D-III if that doesn't work out, but D-I and the pros are looking farther and farther away every day. It sucks to know that you've invested your life in something that will never end up giving you anything but heartbreak in the end. Regardless, I'll still work every day until they make me hang up my cleats for good. I won't stop until they tell me that I'm done, and even then I might still try to make it, but the fact is that about 1% of the top college athletes make it to the NFL and even then, the average career lasts about, what, 4 years? No way I can look to this as a viable long-term career option, let alone bank on it.

However, there are those who can. This isn't an attack on amazing athletes who are just born with talent, no I'm not that bitter, this is an all out fucking war on the amazing athletes who are born with natural talent and end up throwing it all away.

For some guys, it's possible to debate whether or not a meddling coach got in the way of success, or maybe some kind of freak injury lead to depression, perhaps their heart just wasn't in it so they left the sport. Nothing wrong with that. What I'm talking about are the ones who are given repeated chances to to live their dream and continually fuck it up because they just don't have the guts to tough it out and work hard, yet they continue to take the roster spot of someone out there who's going to work his ass off for you and produce the same results.

I never really had a problem with JaMarcus Russell until I saw this. Surely you've got to be kidding me. Surely, it's supposed to read "Russell fires life coach, begins comeback attempt with team X." No? Really? JaMarcus Russell was fired by his life coach? Are you fucking serious? I can't believe that someone out there was denied the chance to play in the NFL because of this jackoff. It's gotten to the point where I feel both an incredible anger and a painful sadness whenever someone says Russell's name, he is after all, another human being, but mostly it's anger. JaMarcus was literally kicked out of the city by a guy whose job it is to rehabilitate young athletes. He was so lazy and so unmotivated that he runs the risk of never playing in the NFL again after it's only been four years since he was deemed the best player in college football and picked number one overall.

If this were a case of a guy who just didn't have the talent we thought he did, I'd probably be ok with that. But that's not the case at all is it? JaMarcus, I wish you no ill-will, but you just went and pissed all over my dreams buddy. Reality has set in: fuck what you heard, a guy who probably hasn't touched a weight since he broke into the league is getting paid tens of millions of dollars to do literally nothing is gaming the system while the ones who would kill to be there are stuck at home being bitter about it.

I have to say

if you really are still in HS, you write very well. Much, much better than most HS students. I also completely agree that it is sad to see and can be madenning how so many people squander an incredible opportunity.

Good job.

Look your post is spot on

But, dont give up hope.
Some colleges let smaller school players workout at their pro days.
you never know you could do that and get in on a PS. in several years.
right now become a workout warrior and start studying your positions film and techniques

There's always arena leauges.....

Before I do anything I ask myself "Would an idiot do that?" And if the answer is yes, I do not do that thing.

You are young and I was where you are.

Keep choppin wood. In my case, I play men’s semi-pro. It s my “hobby”, my “passion”. You will always have the fire in your gut to compete for the love of the game. Don’t lose it. Maybe you go to a D1 school, maybe you don’t. Maybe you play ball, maybe you don’t. But from what you say you have the fire to pursue it no matter what. Worst case scenario for you is you end up like me. That’s a good thing. No, actually, it’s a great thing. I still play the game I love with others who feel the same way. WHile I would prefer to earn my living playing football, I don’t but enjoy it no less than if I did.

Keep up all the hard work you are putting into yourself, in school and on the field, and let the rest work itself out.

I wish I still played football and/or actually pursued it in college...

but I stuck to soccer (honestly, because it’s cheaper to play… ha). I’m 5-6 years removed from college now and play mostly in area league around here. Bottom line, if YOU think you are good enough to play, you are. Put in hard work at the gym, learn every angle of your position and even other positions that correlate to what you play, and don’t ever give up on what you want to do. Even if you go to a D-II school, D-I schools pluck dominate players from there all the time. If you want to go the extra mile, find a mentor that’s played at the next level before. I own a gym and we have Ernest Jones (ex-Denver Bronco DE) that trains HS kids for the gap between HS and college, he guides them through the whole transition and helps them sort of find themselves before the next level. That sounds like exactly the person you need to get in-touch with if they are in your area.
At the age of 29, my football dreams have burnt out and my soccer dreams are fading, but I still play ever f-ing game like it’s a God Damn Championship. I love it. I hate watching TV and seeing players I know I am better then. Don’t let your time and ability slip through your fingers, you have to make this shit happen for yourself. Just ask Kurt Warner….

Chin up bud

I understand your frustration, but you’re fortunate to be a smart guy and learn that life isn’t fair at an early age. Assuming you don’t end up playing in the NFL for a living, there are so many other areas of the sport that you can be a part of and make a living at. Coaching, training, phys rehab, sports science, sports nutrition. and bro i will tell you that if you really want to play football for a living… you’ll find a way to make it happen. even if it’s CFL, Arena or one of the other half dozen pro football leagues around the world.

Best of luck to you man

I’m sure you’ll go on to do much better things in the world than freaking Russel regardless of whether or not you continue playing.

Awesome Read

I enjoyed every moment of it. Any sports agent would love to have a client like you going into the NFL Draft.

NEVER give up on your dream, man!!

Don’t focus on your odds….just focus on the thing you love to do….and always give it your all. And learn something from these idiots…..NEVER take your blessings for granted. Always keep an attitude of gratitude and keep working hard….and you’ll be just fine.

If you had to be perfect to do what we do, then nobody would be doing it. On the other hand, if everyone could do what we do.....then everyone would be doing it.

wow, I’ve totally ignored all the awesome responses I’ve been getting to this, but thank you guys so much. it was meant to be more of a “fuck you NFL players that clown around” than a “sucks that I won’t get to the NFL” post, but nonetheless, I really appreciate the love. if I do make it, you all will be the first to know.

ok, probably not, but you’ll know about it.
