Tennessee Titans Daily Links: BY THE HAMMER OF THOR!!!! Edition

Still waiting on that drama-free off-season, Kenny.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Paul K points out that Bud Adams is showing plenty of willingness to spend money by letting Munchak fire coaches with money left on their contract as he sculpts his first full coaching staff. Of course it's a little easier for Bud to stomach the 'extra' salary since it looks like Jeff Fisher got roughly the amount of those extensions takes out of his final settlement.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 So we all know that Munchak is going to interview Jerry Gray, but my question is: What does it look like when Mike Munchak interviews a coaching candidate? When Gray walks in the office, is Munchak doing 600 lbs leg presses? I bet there's a large hammer and horned helmet in the corner, with a half eaten calf on a rotisserie spit over an open flame. Is the thermostat set on like 50˚? I need to know these things.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Kenny Britt is due in court tomorrow on a suit filed by two New Jersey bail bond companies who allege that Britt vowed in open court to pay a buddy's $12,500 bond fee, but later refused. No matter what the back story is here, there's no reason in the world that this should be a story. You could find a business manager who writes in crayon who would've stopped this from becoming a story. We can take some solace in the fact that it's old news being rehashed, but Kenny's got to keep himself more separated from his old buddies if he wants to make good on his claim to be completely focused and have a drama-free off-season.

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 By The Hammer of THOR!!!!!!!

Tennessee_titans_30x21 The end of Dinger's tenure with the Titans should most-likely signal the end of Kerry Collins and Chris Simms' time with the team. Both guys were kept around for the past few years largely due to their familiarity with Dinger's system. If Munchack really does completely change the offensive philosophy there will definitely be plenty of other options who better fit the new scheme.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Toughest break in all of this for Heimerdinger is the timing: there aren't any other open spots on staffs that would be close to equal to what he did here. If I'm Dinger I sit this season out and focus on my family and health, especially if I can get any assurances from Jeff Fisher that I'm probably his first call when he gets a job in 2012.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 CSN Washington tabs the Titans as one of the four most probable landing spots should the Redskins jettison Donovan McNabb. Granted I didn't watch most of the Redskins' games that led up to McNabb being benched, but Washington is one of those spots where you can usually forgive a veteran for running into problems... mostly because when your owner is a certified jackass, jackassery abounds.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Pretty much the entire defensive coaching staff for the Green Bay Packers, outside of coordinator Dom Capers, are getting looks from around the league after the stellar year they put together. The Titans would be wise to get in the mix for a few of them if Jerry Gray decides he can't screw over his alma mater by taking a job before he even coaches a down for the Longhorns.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Texans fans are sad that Bruce Matthews is headed to Nashville, but that sadness is off-set by the idea of us hiring Fred Bush. I'm pretty down on paying Bush to do a damned thing after the debacle that was Houston's defense last year, especially when our linebackers probably need the best position coach on the defense right now. That being said, it was mainly the Texans secondary that killed them, and Bush won't have any responsibilities related to that group with Jerry Gray in charge.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Wes Bunting takes a look at potential draft prospects who have significantly hurt their stock at the various all-star games that have taken place over the last few weeks. What did I take away from it? References to how a quarterback 'spins' the football has now replaced grading a guy's 'moxie' as my favorite BS term scouts love to use. I'm just waiting to see a draft profile where someone uses the phrase "I can project a lot of upside in how he spins the ball into tight windows." My brain hurts just writing that. It's not that those points are asinine, it's just the constant search for the hot phrase among scouts/draftnicks that cracks me up.

He was a DC for one season

funny part is, he was the secondary coach before that, and they ended up 1st against the run and 32nd against the pass in that one season he was the DC.

They may have been confusing him with Morris.

I think Munchak has done a pretty good job so far of changing the staff..

But defensively, what is he thinking? Gray, McGinnis, Bush aren’t exactly top choices around the league. Its likely that none of them will be DCs within the next two years, unless they are given ours.

On Kenny Britt, I really hope Munchak gets this kid’s head straight. Time to start making headlines for only your play, Kenny.

And if the defense is to throw some hybrid looks, who better to do that than someone with 3-4 experience?

I’m still of the preference that we have a 4-3 base just because of current personnel, but if Thorchak wants to vary up the fronts and give different looks, someone who has experience in a 3-4 is probably best suited to be able to design and teach those. Plus Moss said somewhere something about adaptability, so I don’t think he’d be rigidly stuck to HAVING to run a 3-4, something I think Mangini would do.

I'm so sure it's valid to put so much stock in comparing ranks of teams

as an analysis of position coaching. How can you compare? Do teams have the exact same players? No. Too may variables. Did the Texans D suck because of Bush, or because they just suck? Did the Seahawks secondary suck because of Gray, or because they just suck? If it’s all about the coaching then how come rankings vary widely when coaches are in different environments? Summing up a coach as “oh noes his [position] was ranked bad last year!!1” is lazy and just gives sports “analysts” something to write about.

Frank Bush led the worst defense in the league last year, and one of the worst in history.

That’s not all on the players. The same can be said with Gray. Given our current defensive personnel, we need a DC who can coach up the players and put in successful schemes. Do we really want a DC who can only be successful when he’s got one of the most talented rosters in the league?

Sounding serious has nothing to do with actually having anything meaningful to say

Were my questions not serious enough, or did I just not act enough like I knew what I was talking about? Pretty simple questions actually. There has been no talk of which I am aware regarding Bush-as-DC. So “his” peformance in that capacity isn’t really relevant.

You also said that Gray has led some of the worst defenses in the history of the league. Surely you were serious when you said that, so I just wanted to know which one. Or did you just hear that somewhere so you are rolling with it?

Yeesh
So "his" peformance in that capacity isn’t really relevant.

He led the WORST defense in the league. That defense had his fingerprints all over it, INCLUDING the linebackers. So ya, I’d say being an awful DC is relevant to this discussion.

The same can be said for Gray.

This was not meant to imply he led the worst D in the league. I said that the pure awful-ness of the Houston D could not be completely attributed to their personnel, and the same goes for Gray. Just because Seattle or Washington may not have had the best rosters is still not something you can look at and blame completely on personnel. At some point, I want a coach to be able to coach up his players.

Coaches should be able to coach up their players? Ok, I buy that, but how far? Should a coach be able to take MCMers and make us into an elite defense?

I never said Bush was a good DC. Just pointing out that you err by cherry picking circumstances and/or removing individuals from within the context they are acting, and then using this “knowledge” to try and prove how serious you are about interweb sports analysis.

But I would have serious concerns about his ability as anything more (OC) than a positional coach, assuming he failed because of the offensive side of the ball. Munchak also has a stronger resume of taking low draft picks and turning them into very solid players as OL coach.

Obviously you can’t move from forum guy to OC. Plus some of your posts are fail, so obviously you would fail as OC. Nevermind your good posts. They aren’t in the sample. If you haven’t won the SB yet as an OC then you can’t be one, sorry. We are looking for the chicken and the egg as a package deal. Thanks for applying though!

It's a simple equation really

This dude + Homing Missile throws + 10 minutes Behind the Line of Scrimmage = Super Bowl!!!!

And I don’t know what your talking about, literally every single one of my posts are Pure Gold. I’ve been approached about writing a book based on strictly my posts on MCM. Even if they will be read completely out of context, I’ll still be slated to win Pulitzer Prize by a landslide.

Living in DC I watched a lot of McNabb.

While he did miss open receivers from time to time(which he has always done) he had absolutely nothing to throw to at the wide receiver position, there was Santana Moss who is probably a number two or three receiver right now and the rest of there receivers shouldn’t have been on an NFL roster. He did have Cooley when he was healthy and later on in the season he had Fred Davis(when the coaching staff finally decided it was okay to put him on the field and throw some passes in his direction). He carried that team early in the season but due to the offensive line also being terrible he took a some hits and just wasn’t the same.

He looked a little old but that could also be because he had zero talent around him on that side of the ball.

I saw a few of his games

and I think he can still be a good but not great QB. I just don’t see any reason to bring a guy of his age in when we’re clearly in a rebuilding stage.

its funny how every one is get this in the draft trade for him we need the bla bla nla anyone even think we might not have the NFL next year if things dont shape up we wont need to disscuss this u guys are all 30-50 year old guys who sit on there butt and drink beer and watch Football ya when there is no NFL next year what u going to do then?

Agreed on the rookie QB thing

but I think there are better, less expensive options out there. I won’t be mad if McNabb ends up a Titan but I feel they should go in a different direction.

He's not that old

34 Or 35? Favre, Gannon, Beurlein (sp?), Moon all had some of their best seasons beyond that age.

True, but McNabb just had his worst season since his rookie year.

More telling, though, is that Andy Reid was not only willing to trade him, but willing to trade him within the division. I find it hard to believe that McNabb is going to get any better in the next few years.

by HoustonDiehards on Feb 9, 2011 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

i hear you

you have to understand our excitement right? matthews and munchak coaching together (albeit the success has yet to be determined) is very nostalgic for most of us. ps what are your thoughts about Wade Phillips?

"Oh, you should never, never doubt what nobody is sure about." Gene Wilder - Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

by Chris Faulkner on Feb 9, 2011 5:22 PM CST up reply actions

For some, sure

Nostalgic for those of you that followed the franchise to Tennessee, sure. Munch and Matthews were childhood heroes of mine, so of course I understand the excitement.

I think Wade is a GREAT “football fit” in Houston, but personality fit – I’m not sure. He’s too much like Kubiak. I’d like to have some kind of Yin/Yang thing where if you’re going to have a quiet “aw shucks” guy (as we refer to Kubes and Wade) then you also need to have an ass-kicker. But on the plus side – if we had even a slightly below avg defense last year, we probably are in the playoff hunt. Instead – historically terrible.

by HoustonDiehards on Feb 9, 2011 6:13 PM CST up reply actions

You didn't have to "follow" the franchise for Matthews to be nostalgic or exciting.

Bruce Matthews may have only played 3 years as a Tennessee Titan, but for someone like me, those were the first three years that I truly cared about football, and the first two years were two of the best we’ve had.

It’s also the same time I was getting into playing football in school, and he became a bit of a role model, to me.

While me being young and getting into football for the first time may be unique, I think it’s not uncommon that Bruce would be a nostalgic hire for anyone who jumped on the Titans bandwagon as soon as it got into town. He was part of some really good teams, and I’ve always considered him one of “ours,” along with Eddie George, Steve McNair, etc., because of that.

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short.
