Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Ask a Saints Fan!

Hello Titans fans! Grumps from Canal Street Chronicles here.

Week 14 in the NFL has our teams scheduled to match up on your home field. Considering how the Saints have played on the road this year, you must be feeling pretty good about your situation. In case you aren’t as up to date on the Saints record well it’s 9-3 and each of those three losses came on the road. Considering that both teams are currently on hot streaks and steam rolling a path on their way to claiming their spots for playing in post season this should be a fairly intense game.

Will CJ2K gash the Saints D for a monster game? WIll Jimmy Graham continue to be a nightmare for opposing teams D? Debate these questions and more right here!

Feel free to ask anything you care to about the Saints, make predictions for the game, or trash talk as you see fit.

Someone will be around to answer your questions.

Pretty Significant. Saints are averaging 33 points a game…..40 points a game at home. So we’re talking over a 10 point swing from home to away. There just seems to be some severe lack of execution while on the road.

Pretty much sums it up

Although I will add. Our losses on the road have had some points to take into consideration.

First loss was against GB, opening night, while they were raising their SB banner. And it came down to the very end. Second loss, Tampa Bay. Game in which we lost our coach due to the sideline collision with Graham, and of course divisional games are always tight. Third loss to Rams (insert face palm here), that stadium was apparently going nuts due to the World Series win. Oh well. I don’t know anyone who is thinking the Titans will be easy.

Not all that often. But only because you specifically said 4 WR. More often than not we’ll put out 3 WR with Graham set at the slot, or 3 WR with Sproles lined up in the slot after motion. A handful of times a game though, we will go four wide.

I apologize for not knowing your team well enough to know if you’re being overly serious or making an internal joke. However, our answer to any linebacker is the same…healthy doses of Graham and Sproles.

OK, Grumps...this is a joke, right?
Considering how the Saints have played on the road this year, you must be feeling pretty good about your situation.

Ah, NO…I’m not feeling anywhere near good knowing we have to face Drew Brees. My question to you, sir…how in the world do you stop this guy?

by titansfan4ever on Dec 6, 2011 10:54 AM CST reply actions

Simple…play him on the road. Get pressure on him with your defensive front. Brees is a bit of an enigma….he leads the NFL this year in passer rating against 4 or fewer rushers. Yet historically he’ll torch you off a blitz. Best way to knock him off his game is quick pressure up the middle.

And no…Grumps wasn’t joking. Saints are 3-3 on the road with losses to 2 teams that on paper…had no right to even be in the game..let alone win. Welcome to the crazy NFL.

Well...road or no road....

I’ve watched Drew several times this year and all I’ve seen him do is shred defenses with precision accuracy and ALWAYS making the right decisions as far as finding the open receiver. Pressure or no pressure, he always gets it off in time…and always to the right guy. So no, you not gonna lull me into some kind of false sense of security.

Mainly, I’d be worrid that you’re catching us as our offense is on a roll. The offensive line is playing better since the bye week and Brees is on a mission.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 6, 2011 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

Well

Honestly I don’t want him to stop. But Jeff is right, pressure him to make him force his throws before he is set and its going to be good for you guys. However, since the Rams debacle, the O-line has toughened up and isn’t being pushed around. Brees has not thrown a pick in the last few.

The Saints must have the most weather friendly schedule of all time

Seeing as this is likely the worst weather Brees will see until the playoffs (seriously look at their schedule) does being outdoors and cooler slow down Brees at all?

by CrazyTitan on Dec 6, 2011 11:19 AM CST reply actions

Nope. Not really. Gotta remember….Drew was a purdue boilermaker after all. He’s never really shown advese effects in cold weather nor does he seem to fare poorly outdoors. A high velocity wind would be about the only thing….but that would effect everyone.

Cold won't

Wind will, but as mentioned by Jeff will effect everyone.

The cold weather is what a lot of Packers fans are saying will be the doom of the Saints if we match up later in the playoffs in Lambeau. Truth be told, if the weather is that bad, I like the fact that our RB’s are much better than the Packers. While yes it is nice playing in a dome and cold weather is not something they are used to, I don’t think that the Saints will look like two year olds on skates if having to play in inclement weather.

Actually, legend has it that growing up he was picked on by some guy who was some hotshot for his high school and played Defense. Going forward Brees made it his goal in life to try to dominate anyone who dared play against him. Those wounds cut deep and he was pissed off for life.

What´s your oppinion on NO´s running backs?

Do you miss Bush or prefer Sproles?
Ingram or Thomas for workhorse?

"He's an amazing talent. He's probably the most explosive back since Marshall Faulk and Barry Sanders." - Eddie George, about CJ.

by criollo_pcg on Dec 6, 2011 11:53 AM CST reply actions

I don’t know of a single person that misses Bush due to Sproles. Sproles has exceeded bush in every category for the most part and plays at a consistent level that Bush never did.

Ingram is the workhorse..however, most people wish Thomas would get more carries. Thomas has shown to be more elusive and explosive and is one of the best in the game on the screen. Ingram though, runs with a bit more ferocity between the tackles for the tough yards. Payton has shown a knowledge of knowing who to put in when and why….we just all wish he would use them more regularly.

by jeff.l.b on Dec 6, 2011 11:58 AM CST up reply actions

Agree with Jeff again.

Sproles has been everything we Saints fans wished Reggie could be. While Reggie is still a dynamic player, and I for one am happy to see him doing well in Miami, he was not consistent and durable while with the Saints. When it came time to restructure his contract he wanted more than what the Saints were willing to offer. Sproles does it all, for cheaper, and durability and consistency are not an issue. I love having Sproles on our team.

As for the workhorse comment. Neither. I am one of the fans who actually likes the split. After having zero healthy quality backs last season, I love the approach Payton is using. They all have unique skill sets, and I am fine with the way they are being used. If you mean who is our pounder of a back, it would definitely be Ingram (and second choice would be Ivory) as they are much more aggressive in their running styles.

I like Hamburgers!

by Grumps on Dec 6, 2011 12:24 PM CST up reply actions

I totally agree and I think we have seen Ingram playing better as the season progresses. Honestly, if they can keep this group of RBs together with Brees a few years, that would guarantee our offense maintaining its position at the top of the league.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 6, 2011 12:50 PM CST up reply actions

Sproles has been absolutely ridiculous..

Sean Payton I think has been holding back a little on letting Ingram go because he’s scared of what happened last year when they got to the playoffs and all of the RBs were out. I really think Ingram can be more of a workhorse back if Sean would let him go. With the depth and skill at RB they have this year though, he’s doing the right thing by not working them all to death.

I think Thomas is one of the best backup RBs in the league. He is a true workhorse. He’s not spectacular at any one thing, but he is more than better than average at everything.

Is Gregg Williams still using the exotic blitzes?

Watched them Sunday night, seemed like they were mainly using the front four to get pressure. How is your defense overall?

Whoa boy...

Our D is classified as a “Bend don’t Break” D. They give up yards in chunks at times. But they have the ability to hold other teams to minimal points. FG’s instead of TD’s, etc. GW still loves to blitz and it changes dramatically from game to game. Usually, the one to watch for on a blitz is Roman Harper. GW likes to send him a lot.

Our D is a hot topic of debate over at CSC. There are some who think the wheels are coming off and others who don’t mind the garbage yards and stat padding as long as they eliminate/minimize points scored. We have been snake-bit this year in regards to forcing turnovers and it has been a bit frustrating.

I like Hamburgers!

by Grumps on Dec 6, 2011 1:56 PM CST up reply actions

Actually sounds a lot like us.

With better DEs. Our defense will give up the yards but has been fairly strong in limiting opposing teams to FGs, and recently we’ve gotten some opportunistic turnovers as well. Unfortunately our front four is not very good at getting to the QB so I fear it could be a long day.

Personally I think yards given up are overrated, scoring defense is the best barometer. I’m fine with giving up yards in favor of not giving up points.

The Saints and Titans Ds are very similar

Give up heaps and heaps of yards, but once it gets to red zone time they turn in to brick walls.

The big difference is that the Saints get a lot more pressure than the Titans, by both more blitzes and just plain better play from the DL

Oh yeah, one other thing…

Vilma >>>>>>>>> Ruud

But I think we fixed that problem recently…..

Ah, crap.

Well, we may get pressure up the middle every 4-5 snaps at least, because of Karl Klug.

Dude is a rotational defensive lineman, but when he comes in you notice because he’s normally pushing right up the middle and going after the QB.

I don’t really see us getting to him with our front four much outside of that.

Well, our cornerbacks and defensive lineman have been awesome at blowing up screens this year.

Especially Finnegan. Part of the screen is catching the defense off guard, and we don’t often get caught off guard on screens.

lol sorry...

I don’t see much of a chance for the Titans this week though. We can’t get any pressure, our Safeties are very suspect to play action, and our No 2 corner has a concussion. Don’t get me wrong, Verner will do just fine, we just need all three of our star CBs. Maybe Campbell or Hawkins will surprise us though.

I could see this being a shootout with the Titans scoring around 30 and the Saints somewhere around 40.

Actually not only are the Falcons still in the division run….to be honest it wouldn’t surprise me if they won it. Simply because they have easy games here on out with the exception of the one against the Saints. The Saints however, have a couple of potentially difficult games plus the one against the Falcons. The Falcons can easily go 4-0 and be 11-5. The worse thought as far as I’m concerned, is meeting the Falcons the first game of the playoffs. That will either end with a smile….or the most bitter loss of the last decade.

For the most part. That and the Texans defense is one of the best in the entire NFL. Falcons are always up against games against the Saints, and we usually split with them. Oddly enough with both teams usually winning the away games.

Well

I never count the Falcons out. But I think they are a team that lost its identity and are struggling. They were a run first, complimentary pass game team. Then they mortgage the farm for Julio, and expect Matt Ryan to springboard to stellar QB status. He hasn’t. JJ is not the answer they were looking for. I think they will be on slow decline. Turner is getting older and less durable and productive, Gonzo is still playing exceptionally well but that can’t last forever. I just don’t buy Matt Ryan as anything more than an above average game manager.

Just my opinion.

I don’t disagree. But they are a better team than Carolina and Jacksonville and Tampa Bay…..3 of their remaining 4 games…hence my point. They should win at least 2 if not 3 of their remainging games and always play the Saints tough in their fourth. At worst they’ll be 9-7….most likely 10-6 and in the Playoffs.

but I don’t see the Saints not keeping pace with them the rest of the way.

Its the same situation the Titans are in right now. Even if the Falcons and Titans do win out, the Saints and Texans still have to lose a lot of games for the standings to flip, which I just don’t see happening.

Atlanta Falcons have the number 3 defense in the league against the rush as far as total yards are concerned and are number 4 on defense in the league for avg yards per rush.

Regardless.

I am looking for them to get Newton’d

So am I. I would love it if they lost. If they lose and Saints win…Saints clinch the south. I’m justing leaning toward the Falcons on a 60/40 kind of ratio to be able to pull this game out. They simply have the better team. That being said…anyone can obviously lay and egg.

Tough call…we have no first round draft pick. I’ve been clamoring for a rush DE and linebackers for years. But when your first pick won’t be coming until the second half of the second round…it’s hard to address any real need. Saints need a playmaker at Linebacker, a DE to get after the QB and some offensive line help. Frankly another WR with some skills wouldn’t hurt…we have average to above average WRs in my opinion and I know Meachem will be a free agent. PayLoo has shown a sign though of frankly not caring about getting better at a position of need and simply drafting who they think is the best player available.

In order of priority:

1. LB (especially outside)
2. NT
3. DE (Smith is getting older and slower – waiting to see how Jordan/Romeus develop)
4. WR (a legitimate #1)
5. OT
6. QB to bring up behind/after Brees in a few years
7. SS – this is if we get quality play at OLB…if not, I’d move this up to 4 – Roman Harper is great ar run support, but suspect in coverage (just like our LBs at coverage)

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 7, 2011 8:05 AM CST up reply actions

Yes, but if we only have to worry about him I’ll feel much better. We’ve done well at handling teams that get too one-dimensional (outside of the Packers, but I think we’ll beat them in the playoffs)

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 7, 2011 8:06 AM CST up reply actions

The best question that comes to my mind is

What do you think we should do offensively to score touchdowns on you guys… stopping the offense is something i have no clue about how to do….

Run the ball on us and screen passes

Although were ranked 27 against the pass we are the 3rd most passed on team we are 6th in compltetion % against us with just 57.7 % allowed
We are 12th in allowing ypc
We get passed on alot because we take a lead and teams try to get in a shoot out
Our corners are alot better then they seem 27th in pass defense is measured in yardage only not the rest of those things

by mississippisaintsfan on Dec 6, 2011 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

run the ball cool

Screen passes and checkdowns are our starting QB’s forte, but I really hope Drew Brees forgets to take his nyquil the night before the game Sunday

what you said about your pass defence reminds me a lot about us

except the reason why we get passed on a lot is because our offence has so many 3 and outs in a game

We sucked against the Rams we lost to a team we had no business losing to

We haven’t sucked since then and we havent lost since then
Our OLine is healthy now

Honestly, it was a trap game. They had come off of beating the Colts like a drum and were looking forward to playing the Falcons. Payton has actually said that we needed that game. I don’t see that happening again this season, but look for it to happen again next season sometime.

Well, for one thing, Stephen Jackson is our nemesis. Well, yeah, that’s all I have to offer. I think Chris Johnson is a beast, but Jackson is like kryptonite to our team.

Every time you guys are on national television

they cut to the 4 piece jazz band playing “when the saints go marching in”. Do you ever get tired of it?

Not really…it’s a classically catching little diddy. And it’s the song the franchise is named after…so that would kind of be heresy. The whole notion of being named that because of being granted the franchise on All Saints Day…was purely coincidental.

Additionally this past Sunday night they didn’t cut away to a jazz band playing that song…they cut away to a jazz band playing the Sunday night theme song. Variety is the spice of life.

Oh yes, I get tired of it

There are lots of other songs about the Saints that could played just to break up the monotony. I would prefer a little jingle from my favorite New Orleans native….Sir Phil Anselmo

My fantasy team wants to thank you for Drew Brees.

He led them to a 12-1 regular season, landing me the #1 seed in the playoffs.

The playoffs that start this week. When he’s playing my Titans.

:(

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

How do the Saints deploy their WRs?

The Saints just have so many talented receivers it’s mind-boggling…

I know Graham and Sproles are heavily featured in the passing game, and that Colston is the main WR target, but how are Henderson, Moore, and Meachem usually used? What kind of patterning is there to the sets and situations they’re featured in?

Just going off of fantasy stats and without watching the Saints much, it seems like every week one of those three has a pretty good game, but you can never predict which one.

Go Titans! Go Magic!

My fantasy league wants to blame you for Jimmy Graham

I play in a keeper league and stole him away late in the draft. Best player on my team.

Looking at the predictions by Saints fans...

I understand why you guys feel confident you’re going to win. In fact, I picked the Saints as well. But I’m stunned by the lack of respect for this Titans team. The one that stood out the most was Saints by 20. I mean, its possible that you do win by that much, but I’m still shocked. That’s overconfidence, I’d say.

Thanks Titans Fans

For welcoming us over here this past week. I can appreciate the outcome is not the one you wanted, but man that was a hell of a game. You have to be pretty pumped with how Locker played.

All the best the rest of the way. Good luck Titans fans!
