Chargers at Jaguars Monday Night Football Open Thread
I cannot for the life of me figure out how the Jaguars got two Monday Night Football games. Don't get me wrong, I am not a person who thinks the Titans should have gotten any prime time games. They just were not that attractive not a national television audience before the season started. All of that being said, who thought putting Jacksonville on Monday Night Football twice was going to be interesting?
This game has the chance to be a real snoozer. The Jaguars are terrible on offense because they only have one good offensive skill player. The Chargers are a different story. They have been bad on offense but they have a lot of explosive players.
The story has been Philip Rivers. He denies that he has been playing hurt, but that really seems to be the only explanation for how poorly he has played this season. I have a hard time believing it is anything else.
Discuss the game below.

If Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates are held under 20 points, I win my matchup
But I’m already in the playoffs, a win just helps my seeding.

I don't think he is, he's actually pretty fair and realistic.

I've hated since that Christmas game we had against them at LP.
I watched it on CBS, and since the Chargers were already playoff bound and we weren’t, the entire 60 minutes was a lovefest.
The CBS camera angles actually only showed the Chargers offense. Through-ought the entire game, the focus when the Chargers were on offense was entirely on them, not showing our defense at all.
And of course, when our offense was out there, the camera showed all the way back to our safeties. On some snaps you couldn’t even see who was in our backfield.
Then, the announcers themselves spend the entire night talking about the Chargers. I decided to count the Chargers-Titans talking point count. It ended up being something like 56-4. They said over 50 different good things about the Chargers, Phillip Rivers, their players/coaching staff/waterboys/excrement, and they only said a handful of things about us. Oh, and the Chargers won too.
Ever since then, I have effectively rooted for them to fail. And I’m so so glad they are.

I was at that game.
Coldest game I’ve ever been to. It had to be 15 or 20 degrees that night.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

I actually had some really good seats for that game. We were sitting in the club level because my parents got some tickets for free somehow. Most commentators end up pissing me off, anyway.
It could have been a good trip if the Titans had won and if it had been 15 degrees warmer.

I believe he’s playing poorly because this is the true Rivers. This is the Rivers that you get when defenses take away Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson and get pressure on the guy. He folds, whines, and yells at his own players when he’s the real issue.

Philip Rivers is a very good quarterback.
Say what you want about him personally, and many have, but there is no denying he’s a good quarterback. Easily a top 10 quarterback in the league. His play is more indicative of the injuries and/or roster moves around him by Norv Turner and AJ Smith than anything else.

by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Dec 5, 2011 7:20 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah, well...
On what you said about his talent… I agree. But talking heads and fans alike have praised him for what he has between the ears.
His behavior during this losing streak has been a mess. He lost the ball and cost his team a win against the Chiefs because he had his left hand closed.
A lot of the interceptions he’s thrown have been mental mistakes.
The guy has always had his talent and the talent he’s throwing to overshadow the fact he’s not that mentally sound. He tends be a crybaby and lash out at his teammates when it’s really his fault. He’s had that tendency for a while, but he only has done it when he isn’t having success.
In short: The Rivers we see now is the real one. Not from a talent standpoint; not from an ability standpoint, but from a mental and behavioral standpoint.

The jags getting two MNF games is ridiculous.
Like Jimmy said, I’m not saying the Titans should be getting MNF games, but you know, at least we still fill the stadium up on a regular basis. If the Jags can’t get people to come to their stadium, what makes ESPN thing people want to watch them on TV.

Then they are going to let the Jags play every MNF game because Tebow is getting sick of having to miss church on Sunday mornings.

McCarthy at MLB and Ayers at OLB probably mean we're not going OLB in the first round.
Much greater needs at OL, S and WR before LB.

I think after watching the Titans all season
Safety and WR are definitely the two most pressing needs. A solid WR that could step into the role of a #2 or possibly even #1 if Britt were to go down again is a must for Hasselbeck next season or Locker as he comes along.
And, by Michael Griffin’s play this year, he’s not coming back, leaving us with 2 holes at safety (Hope, Griff, and Babs probably all leaving).

I know I've been a bit of an O line apologist around here.
But I think an interior lineman is absolutely our #1 need. Even just replacing one of those guys would make a much bigger difference than you’d think.
Go read Word of Muth on FO this week to get an idea of just how important guards are to the overall play of the line.

Interior o-linemen rarely get drafted in the first round.
Munchak doesn’t need a first rounder, he just needs someone who’s not a sixth or seventh rounder.

Where we take the guard doesn't really change the fact that in my mind, it's our biggest need.
But I think if we get the chance to draft an elite G/C, we have to take it, even if it is in the back half of the first round. That’s our biggest opportunity for instant upgrade on this team.

by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Dec 5, 2011 8:04 PM CST up reply actions
Meh, biggest upgrade would be a top-flight WR and S.
Interior OL will help, but I would argue having a top-flight WR (who can stay healthy) and/or getting a great safety will help this team mores than going O-line in the first round.

I'm not completely sure who I'll be backing just yet.
I love Jeffery’s highlights, but I’m always more concerned with the off field stuff. For all the criticisms I have of Locker, I adore his squeaky clean resume off the field. Plus we’ve seen a shift towards drafting smart, high character guys. Jeffery’s weight rumours will have to be considered.
My early feel would be to take him. Providing him with a strong locker room around him would be key, but with Locker and Hass in the room that should be fine.

I doubt we do it.
Goes against Reinfeldt’s M.O. If anything we trade back not up. Blackmon is probably a top three guy so you’re going to have give up a lot if we’re picking in the 15 – 23 range. If we were one piece away like the Falcons allegedly were when they moved for Jones, I could understand it. We’ve got too many pieces we still need though.

But the Cook pick was a waste of giving the Patriots a 2nd round pick to trade up for.
Give me Jermichael Finley any day of the week over Jared Cook

Honestly you could say all 3 of those guys are only good because of the system they are in
Since each QB spreads the ball out to so many weapons it gives each of them to make big plays every week.
Although I believe all 3 are really really good even if they were to move to a different system.
Graham is a stud, Gronkowski is just a big big big man and Finley is very good as well

The Cook situation is the only possible comparison.
In the fourth round on I’m pretty ok with trades, especially one that merely involved I think trading fourths and fifths. Not as big a deal to me as giving up possibly a 1,2 and even a 1 the following year.

I hope he won't be in the draft discussion for two more years...
But when you get a chance, watch Justin Hunter play.

I think a healthy UT is a dangerous team next year. Our defense started playing very well at the end of the year, and by all accounts, we just had a very big recruiting weekend. If our offense stays healthy, we might be knocking on the door of 9 or 10 wins this year, assuming we don’t have to play LSU again.

They absolutely HAVE to beat Florida this year.
I think if Dooley doesn’t beat Florida or Alabama and total at least 8 wins, he’s gone. There is absolutely no reason for the 2012 team not to win 8 games other than significant injuries like this season.
Even with Mizzou joining the SEC East, Tennessee should be able to beat them too …

I think Dooley gets this coming year and a fourth year.
And if he doesn’t win 8 games this year, he’s on the hottest of hot seats for the 2013 season.
He walked into a program that 3 straight horrible/blown up recruiting classes ruined, so he’s had a lot of built in excuses, but that’s about to be gone. He’s put together a few solid recruiting classes now, and in 2013, the team is completely his. Time to perform or move out of the way.
And for what it’s worth, I really love Dooley. I think he’s a great coach, it’s just time to see some results.

I gave Dooley the benefit of the doubt even coming into this season
I believed taking the 2010 team to a bowl game was an extremely successful season, but for whatever reason, this year’s team, who had a year of experience playing in the SEC, just lacked in every single way. Injuries were a part of it, but damn, what a mess they were this year. At least last year you could blame it on youth, this year, I think a good majority of the blame lies not only on Dooley but the coaching staff as a whole. The team was flat out not ready to play against Kentucky and didn’t want to play against Kentucky as it was. I’m not so high on Dooley after the way the team just didn’t seem to respond to his coaching one bit this year, whether that’s his fault or not I don’t know, but he knows as well as the fans do that 2012 is the pivotal year in his tenure here at The University of Tennessee.

Yeah.
The Kentucky game was a dumpster fire, but I think a lot goes into that. A lot more than just bad coaching. We were playing some good football before Hunter and Bray got hurt, so I’m still willing to give him a pass for this year, but that’s it. No more free passes from me (or about 90% of the fanbase). It’s time for Tennessee to win.

I disagree.
We are thin at WR, sure, but we’re getting Kenny Britt back. Plus, KB practically is the only good WR this franchise has drafted since moving to Tennessee. A big time WR would help, but WR is a more hit or miss spot than an elite level interior lineman, so I’d feel much safer drafting an lineman. Plus, assuming all state nate sticks around and damian williams continues to develop, it’s hard to say that the spot is a bigger weakness than G/C with KB in the mix.
As for safety ,just look at it this way—which position has played the worst this year? Safety or interior? I’m not sure it’s even a contest. I think in the long run, we might need 2 more safeties, but the 3 we have that get reps (Griffin, Babs, Hope) at least get the job done for the most part. And Safety is in the same boat as G/C—they don’t often get drafted in the first round.
I think G/C is the position for most room to improve because that’s the group that has played the worst this year. I also think that’s just a solid way to build a team through the draft. I’m a big fan of building inside-out. This last year, we drafted linebackers and tackles on defense. Perfect. Lets do the same thing on offense. Solidify from the inside out. If we can get a top flight interior lineman and find another good guy during the draft or FA, that will go farther towards helping Locker be a good QB than drafting another coin flip wide receiver.

Let me rattle off some names for you in recent history…Mike Williams (Buffalo), Andre Smith (Cincy), Alex Barron (Rams). All first-round linemen picks in the past decade who busted miserably, two of them taken in the top ten. Granted, they’re tackles but linemen nonetheless. I wouldn’t necessarily say linemen are automatically a safer bet than WR. Receivers are just a more glamourous and thus highly-scrutinized position so they’re “bigger” busts based on attention they get.

Yeah, good point.
I think this organization has made me really uncomfortable drafting receivers, haha.
Either way, I just personally think that the hole at interior O line is so much bigger than the hole anywhere else. Like I said, with KB in the mix, we have a borderline elite WR, a young talent who has shown flashes this year, and a good veteran.
At G/C we have…. nothing. No good players, by all accounts. And it’s one of the most important positions on the field. Fixing G/C is the key to making the offense work again, especially considering the pass blocking isn’t what it was early in the year.

If you want an OLB, why draft a MLB?
I’d say draft a player that projects to being able to play outside.
If it’s an atheltic guy like Burfict, sure, but specifically drafting a MLB just to move him instead of looking at the crop of OLBs seems silly to me.

Know Matt Miller? Draft Guy and analyst on Bleacherreport.
Well, I found some of his articles interesting and thought he was one of thew few writers that had some sense in him. Well, he just posted an article today about the top 50 draft prospects and which teams could use them. Almost all the inside LB’s and the CB’s were posted as players that the Titans could use. So, I lashed out at him cause we are already solid with McCarthy and 3 above average CB’s. He then wrote a response that we can draft an inside LB and switch him to OLB, which I thought was complete BS cause he had none of the OLB prospects as needs for Titans. But at the same time, it just got me thinking if the idea can actually work.

now that McCarthy is in and playing well, I think we can (and really hope we will) get a premier WR to lineup across from Britt. You know, as long as they don’t play the same position..
He was my designated WR for the past few weeks.
But he had some off field stuff didn’t he? In which case I scratch’em off the board.

Floyd is nice
But he needs to clean up his route running and keep a level head if he is going to be considered an elite WR in the NFL. I was really high on him coming out last year, but I started to sour on him after his DUI incident. I just hope he gets his head straight when he enters the league. I hate it when kids with that kind of talent just waste it by doing stupid things instead of what they are supposed to be doing.
If you are like me and are a fan of Floyd. Thn check out Dwight Jones of UNC, Marvin McNutt of Iowa, and Mohamed Sanu of Rutgers. They are the same type of reciever that Floyd is, that could be available to us in the 2nd Round.

This is one of those times. Gabbert took the wrong road, and he’s stuck on it now. It’d be hard for me to see him turning it around. If I were Shad Khan, I’d be sending a moving van and bank truck to San Diego right now…

Nothing against Sunshine personally, I just can’t believe the power draftniks now have over pre-draft hype. He literally came out of nowhere to be considered 1B to Newton’s 1A as far as QBs go. These guys are going crazy with the QBs.
Luck, Barkley, Griffin, Jones and Tannehill all in first half of the round. Wow. The sweet spot to draft is going to be 15-19, because someone is sure to fall if the QBs start going high.

Reuter has QBs going high and Jeffery falling.
It is that type of scenario that would be perfect for us. Any team with a “QB of the Future” in place has got to be licking their chops.

Coples
I’m not going to lie, I really stick to just SEC Football, so I don’t know much about him. But, I’ve heard that he can really get after it. That’s my 2nd desire behind a top flight WR; that consistent legitimately feared pass rusher. So, I’d be OK with that
Is it just me or do Gabbert's drop backs look strange?
Looks like his strides are way too long. He also has already become Captain Checkdown AND Captain Five-Yarder.

Two years after drafting defensive end Derrick Morgan out of Georgia Tech and the Titans are still waiting for a return on their investment. Morgan hasn’t yet regained the explosiveness he showed prior to tearing an ACL as a rookie and only has two sacks this season. The Titans’ pass rush is led by Jason Jones and rookie Karl Klug. Coples doesn’t have elite burst off the edge to solve Tennessee’s pass rush woes on his own, but his strength and length at 6-5, 285 pounds would certainly help.
Also I just learned that if you click the name of the prospect it gives you a full breakdown on them.

After reading DeCastro's scouting report
I think I may have just become the first DeCastro Fanboy of MCM. I would still really love to see WR, but there’s not a whole lot of negatives listed on him. Also, we would be taking the top OG in the draft, as compared to the 3rd or 4th best WR in the draft.
And this sounds like a lot of our picks:
Solid work ethic and character. Known for his work on the practice field and in the weight room. Durable linemen who could play every snap in any scheme. Chose Stanford for its academic standards.

It's actually scary how prophetic he was on April 30 after the draft...
Give Locker a year on the sideline to learn and he’ll prove to be the star quarterback from this class.
The Titans hardly stopped with Locker. They received excellent value throughout the rest of their draft. Linebackers Akeem Ayers and Colin McCarthy in the second and fourth rounds are future starters. So is defensive tackle Jurrell Casey, selected in the third round.
Add to this list a try-hard Iowa defensive lineman in Karl Klug, who could surprise

Hmm...I almost want to gamble and go for more of a pure speed pass rusher.
In Morgan and Jones we’ve got solid all-around guys who hopefully can play the run and get more consistent pressure, but I’d like just a terrifying end like Kearse in his prime, or any one of the Giants’ defensive ends.

Isn't that the case with most GMs though?
Obviously in the past it was much more difficult with the ridiculous contracts given to top QBs, but it is much more doable now. If Gene Smith really wants to keep his “out of the box” and “unorthodox” labels, he really should take a QB. Not just to continue to mess with the mock drafters out there, but it would be the best move for his team.

I agree, minimize your risk now that contracts aren't a barrier.
You’re right though, that GM will absolutely have to have balls of steel cause he will get ripped by everyone for taking QBs two years in a row. You thought Matt Millen got ripped for taking all those WRs back-to-back? That will be nothing compared to a GM who does a QB move like that. In fairness, Matt Millen did just suck.

He overthrew his receivers a few times.
As a whole, I love his skill set. Great arm, obviously high accuracy, mobile QB. I just don’t think he’s worth a top five pick. He’s burst onto the scene, and I’m leery of players like that. I think Luck and Barkley will go before him, maybe even Landry Jones.
