The Offseason
I know it's early but PFF came out with their top fantasy free agents list so I figured we could start the discussion.
Obviously we are set at QB and Kicker.
TE: We have Cook and Graham back. Stevens could be back at cheap. I'd like to explore locking Cook up.
RB: Will we stay with Johnson, Ringer, Harper. Hall has to be resigned unless they think Harper can play FB.
WR: Here's upgrade time. Britt should be at 100%. Washington and Williams make a perfect 3 and 4. Mariani stays on as returner. #1 is obviously Wallace but no way Pitt lets him go. I think the best fit is Stevie Johnson. Elite speed to stretch to field (will fit great with Locker's arm) and is only 25. Plus he runs routes so well he actually excels against Revis. Just my opinion. Would also like Bowe or Colston.
O-Line- We need a middle of the line upgrade badly. Our 18-24 pick can net you the #1/#2 G/C in the draft. My pick is David Decastro. Carl Nicks and Ben Grubbs are also FA. Also Chris Myers is a FA. He's the best C in football.
Defense:
DT: We're set with Casey, Klug, and Smith. Marks is an X-Factor.
DE: Morgan is starting to turn the corner. The rest of the guys are pretty one dimensional. Could be our few round pick. Abraham or Mathis would be a studly stopgap. Mario Williams would be a coup.
LB: Ayers and McCarty are long-term starters. We have Witherspoon next year. One more guy would be nice. Third round pick?
CB: The big question is whether we resign Cort. McCourty, Verner, and Mouton should be sufficient.
Safety: Hope has to go. I'd love to resign Jordan B. Campbell shows potential. Griffin should be resigned too.

For WR i'd take Plax
He is a big body and huge for the redzone, just like Britt.

I like eddie royal
Value has gone down since Denver lost cutler, and cuz of injurys. But I think with the right team and qb he can turn out to be a threat

That’s the type of meh signing we always make. He had a good rookie yr but that’s about it.
Colston might be the most consistent receiver in fball. 6 seasons: 5+ td’s in all of them. 1000 yrds in all but one he missed 6 games in.
But I doubt saints are going to let him walk
And that he would be willing to walk from a pass first team with Brees as the QB

My perfect Offseason:
- Sign one of Grubbs/Nicks/Myers. Our legacy was built on the running game and we gave CJ a ton of cash. If not our first round pick should be here.
- Resign Cort and Jordan B. Jones also if he isn’t too pricey. Decide if Harper can be a RB/FB.
- Get Britt some ELITE help. No third-tier possession guy. I do like what I’ve seen of Harry Douglas though.
- Shore up the weaknesses in the draft. First round should be a guard or DE unless they REALLY like Floyd at WR.
1st Round: Guard/Center/DE/(WR)
2nd Round: Guard/DE/S
3rd Round: Safety / Linebacker
4th Round: I’d take Isiah Austin (WR) from WVU here. He’s got electric Desean Jackson potential
I would be very interested in Harry Douglas.

Obviously we are set at QB and Kicker.
Bittersweet..
It’s sad we’re only set in two positions, one of them being the kicker.
It’s relieving that we’re finally set at QB for the first time since McNair.

We're set at OT, CB, DT (imo) and, yes, RB.

Finnegan’s contract year though, it ain’t gonna be easy to replace him if he just walks. I love the two other CB’s on the roster, but they’re not Finnegans.
aaaaaaand we're back, contribootin' some more!
We need to find moar Finnegans.

Can you imagine a defense with all Finnegans?
The opposing receivers would literally explode with rage and the NFL would have to produce a flag-shooting cannon just for them.

I agree with everything you said except-
1. Griffin should definitely NOT be resigned for any price. He shys away from hitting anyone, takes bad angles on runners out of the backfield, and bites on play action like a dog bites a bone…
2. Campbell is actually a Cb not a S. But, if I remember correctly, coming out of the draft he was considered a Cb/S tweener… With his size/speed, I would love to see him be tested at safety this offseason. If he can not bite on every single play fake, then he’s an instant upgrade over Griffin in my opinion.
My perfect offseason goes as such-
1. Sign one of Grubbs/Bucks/Myers and draft Decastro in round 1.
2. Sign one of V.Jackson/Bowe/Lloyd/Wallace to compliment Britt and Nate.
3. Resign Ball and Jones, draft a pass rushing end in round 3.
4. Keep Spoon as our other olb and draft someone late this year to hopefully take his spot when he leaves after next year.
5. Draft SS in round 2. Resign Babs, and sign another cheaper but solid vet a la Babs for depth and experience. Tryout Campbell at FS.
6. Resign Cort.
I know thats prolly a little much, but we would be a damn solid team if all of the above happened I think.
Locker has a receiver either side;
Locker fumbles the snap;
Picks it up, sprints out to the right;

Fires deep downfield

With you on all of that
Depending on the talent in the draft I’d be open to swapping the order of the DE and S picks but that’s about all. We’ve got an extra 3rd rounder for Babin- what would you do with that? I’d like to look at another interior lineman

Don't know if there's enough WR talent for a gem to drop to the 3rd
But if the right guy’s there why not? I like the idea of a good pass rushing OLB to give us some more pressure options too.
Either way we’d certainly be a contender if it played out as you say

From the Scouts Inc Top 32
There is one G/C (DeCastro #15) and one safety (Mark Barron #13) with a first rd grade. We should be able to get one. If not who knows what we take.
Nice clip
What’s his stat line? Are you saying he could be there in the 3rd?

He should be. He’s small. Dunno if he comes out. http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/487982/tavon-austin
The WR issue is more complicated than that
It depends on who the starting QB is next year. I’m not fussed who it is, I’ll support either and I don’t think it will lead to particularly different results Locker may be more exciting and more big plays but Hass is more consistant, so it balances.
With Hasslebeck, I want Reggie Wayne, He is the ideal route running great hands high football IQ reciever for Hass to have opposite Britt.
With Locker, I’d like more of an athlete who wins jumps balls and can stretch the field. I’m thinking Stevie Johnson, does drop some. But he’s young and him and Kenny could be deadly together for a long time, Bruce and Holt style.
No matter what, I’d like to see us try for Steve Smith (PHI). He was awesome for the Giants, has had a tough year recovering for injury. But a good route runner/slot reciever. I’m not convinced by Williams. I don’t see the potential to develop into anything special, not good enough hands to play in the slot. Not fast enough to stretch the field like a deep threat.
On the other issues
O Line – Sign a vet to start immediately. Draft a youngster (decastro wont be on the board by us) so I’m happy to wait till round 2/3.
DE – Either Draft an athletic monster, not a high motor guy. We have guys with high motors (in a rotation system why we need those I don’t know) lets try a phenom athlete.
OLB – Spoon seems good enough for now. Maybe a very late pick.
Safety – If Decastro doesnt fall to us, I want a top safety. The guy we take would likely be the first one taken, so we should get someone who can contribute straight away. I wouldnt mind franchising Griffin, he’s hit and miss. But we have bigger issues and I think this one can wait till next year but Hope has to go
Why in the world
Would you franchise Griffin? He has been absolutely TERRIBLE this year.. If not for Ruud, Griffin would be the worst player on our defense this year, and you want to hive him top five money?

He hasnt been terrible
He has made a few very bad plays. But has also made some good ones. Look if Griffin would sign a 1/2 year contract for not much money that would be ideal but that seems unlikely. If the worst player in our secondary next season is Micheal Griffin I’d be pretty happy
If they franchise Griffin, Reinfeldt and Co. should be headed straight to the insane asylum.
Thankfully, they are smarter than that.

Interesting thought
I agree that certain WR’s and heir skill sets may mesh better with Hass vs Locker but I think we are quite likely to start both QBs during the course of next year.
I was watching Bowe yesterday and he’d look very good in two tone blue

I would bring back Griffin for the right price, depending on the circumstances.
Fact is, we have 3 safeties leaving this year and I don’t think we’re going to be able to find 3 safeties better than Michael Griffin, regardless of how frustrating his play as been. I’d be cool with giving him a 1 or 2 year deal, solidifying the other safety position and then dealing with his next year.
by NoMoreMustache on Dec 26, 2011 11:54 PM CST reply actions
would he sign a 1/2 year deal
He is a pro bowler (doesnt play like one) but he’s still a pro bowler and could probably find a team who would sign him
He's a pro at missing guys that could have stopped big gains.
I mean.. this year, Griffin is awesome at missing the guys he runs at… and CJ is awesome at running right into guys.
Maybe we should put Griff at RB and CJ at safety.
.
We'd be unstoppable.

Obviously they’ve switched jerseys. Once we get in the playoffs they’ll trade back and we will be AWESOME on both sides of the ball!

Holy hell
You’re absolutely right… 300+ yards rushing and 0 yards given up every game from here on out!!!
AND!!! Another reason Griff would make a great RB is the way he bounces off people when he does actually make any contact whatsoever.
