Cortland Finnegan On PFF's Pro Bowl Team
Pro Football Focus has updated their AFC Pro Bowl roster, and Cortland Finnegan is the only representative from the Tennessee Titans. Here is what they had to say about Finnegan's play this season:
What’s remarkable about Finnegan this year is that he’s taken slot duty in the Titans’ nickel. Normally that’s a recipe for completions and yardage and about as tricky a thing to do as there is. He’s been great from the get go, bringing the heat in run defense, as well as his coverage, and has also cut out all the stupidity.
The biggest thing I have been impressed with from Finny this season is the fact that he has cut out the stupid stuff and still played well. Last year he cut out the stupid stuff at the end of the year, but he didn't play well.
Of course it is not very long until Mike Reinfeldt and company have to decide what they are going to do about Finnegan's contract. He will be a free agent at the end of the year, and it doesn't seem like they are very excited about giving him a long-term deal. They could franchise him. I am not sure he is worth top five CB money, but it could be good to keep him here for one more year and give someone else time to develop behind Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner.
They could always let him walk. I would be OK with this for the same reason I was OK with them letting Stephen Tulloch walk. He is playing well, but he hasn't really made any plays. He has 1 pick and 1 sack on the season, and it isn't like he locks down a side of the field where people are afraid to throw his direction.
I like Finnegan, and would like to see him back with the team, but not with a huge long-term deal. The Titans will take a lot of heat if he walks, but it might not be the worst business decsion.

I agree with all of what you said
But I really want him on this team. Numbers aside, the guy has great intangibles and is a leader. Also, I would hate to have him playing on another team.
You can always find guys that run a 4.3 and can play football. Finny is unique because he goes 100% and has an attitude.
I really do not think we will find a better cornerback in the next 5 years. If we have to overpay him by 1-2 million then so be it. He should be on this team.

I guess it's all in how you define it, but I am interested in what your definition is.
Because I don’t think this defense has a leader.
However, having a “leader” may be a bit overrated, as we got spoiled by having McNair and then Bulluck on the team.

easy
1. He leads by example. He is the best player on our D.
2. He organized offseason workouts.
3. He was voted in as one of the three team captains. Usually, team captains are considered leaders.
I guess
But I would prefer my team leaders spend their time imparting their experience on the younger players and trying to get them focused instead of worrying how they are gonna pay the bills.
I know that was only one incident and just a 5 minute conversation with a reporter, but it illuminated a larger issue to me.
Not to mention the team showed an incredible lack of focus in a game that would have put us in the playoffs.

That being said, I like Finnegan and would not complain if he is resigned
I just think we throw around that “leader” word too often.

*This
like I said, I would like to see our “leader” not worrying about contract talks in the time we needed him most to be a leader.

He is being a leader, as long as he is getting paid for it.

I say we should re-sign him. I really don't like any time C.Finn has anything to say or do about his contract....
but bottom line, he’s played great here this year. The ONE thing that has gone well for us on defense consistently, is our CB play. I would really love to have C.Finn., McCourt, and ATV playing here for years. They will all get that much better playing together as well.

It all depends on how much money he wants
Remember, Finnegan has gotten paid once. This will be his third contract. It’s not like he is playing on a 7th rounders contract anymore.

Agreed. That is what it will come down to for me.
What do you think is fair for him? Top 5 corner pay? Top 10?

I'd say Top 10
that is what he’s consistently played at.

I would be hesitant to give out top 10 money for a guy who's playing a lot of nickel.

He's playing Nickel when we need him to, otherwise he's moving back to #1 CB spot.

Not an Asumaga or Revis deal, I'll say that.
Maybe put him in the 8-10 range of CBs.

OT
anyone know who gets #1 pick if Indy, St. Louis, and Min all end up tied? or what is the tiebreaker?
I have a post coming on that later today
but it looks right now like the Colts would still have the #1 pick.

well that sucks
go colts!!!! and St. Louis has two difficult games to end the season. so maybe we don’t have to worry about tiebreakers if the colts can beat jax next week
I'd like us to resign Finnegan
He’s the only leader on our defence (McCarthy has potential to be a leader but right now he needs to focus on his own game). And you don’t get better by letting your best player go. And quite frankly nobody else on our team has played anywhere near to the standard of Finnegan this year
I'm on the lets re-sign Finny train.
I love that we have young CB that can hold their own in ATV and J-Mac but having a 3rd CB for Nickel has been huge. I dont think its fair to look at him having only 1 INT this year because J-Mac leads the team with 2. The DB have a total of 7 of 10 INT this year. Here is a stat that is good, Finny lead the team in pass deflection with 10, J-Mac is second wit 8. So when they are throwing at him he is getting a hand on it. Also when it comes to sacks Finny and J-Mac are the only CB with a sack. Finny is 3rd in the team in solo tackles and total tackles behind J-Mac and Babs. I believe FInny wants to be here and that we will get him re-signed.

Agree to disagree
I agree he should have kept his mouth shut about the contract issues until after season and dont need to be paid big money but disagree we should let him walk. This guy has played his heart out the whole time he has been here and prior to this year was feared to have the ball thrown his direction now he is playing more nickle and still has not found a complete groove but helps make plays and is a leader. Lets keep Finny around…..
Please Santa bring me a Titans playoff game
Its all about money.
I’m fine with Finnegan staying, fine with him leaving. I would not pay him top 10 money. I’d love to see him in a Titans uniform for years to come, but I also don’t think he’s that game-changing CB that I thought he was in 2008.

Do you think he could be a game changing CB with a full offseason with Gray's system?
I think with a full offseason in this system will pay off for this D next year.

Possibly
the thing I’ve noticed though, we have the ability to find decent/good CB players pretty much anywhere in the draft. And in order for our CB to thrive in our system, they need a lot of D-line and S help.
That being said, we have bigger problems to address then keeping a good CB that wants a monster contract, when we have 2 great CB’s behind him and we can pretty much find help wherever we go. I think we need to better spend that money on D-line and S so any of our CB can be successful

... That was still a horrible horrible pick...
I think we were so desperate in the return game and thin at CB we had to make a move. He’s so bad though.

Maybe, I don't know.
I think a better pass rush would bring out the best in Finn, he’s always been an opportunistic corner. 2008 showed that if we can pressure the QB he’ll get his share of picks. But I don’t know if that’s worth top 10 money still, just because better QB pressure will make any CB look better. For instance, a dilemma I would have is, do you sink your money into Finn or go out and grab a DE (or two), and then watch Verner and McCourty have more success?

If the Titans front office is consistent, they will assign a maximum dollar value to Finn.
If they value what he brings to the game and consider his on/off field intangibles, they will offer him the contract and match any other offers up to that point. If some other teams wants him for more money, they will let him walk. I can’t point to many examples except : McNair, Mason, Rolle, George, Haynesworth, KVB, KB, Kearse… basically anyone on the roster. They let Haynesworth go and were validated. They paid CJ and were wrong, reinforcing the business plan. Good thing CJ got paid already, because he wouldn’t get much today.
McNair, Mason, Rolle, George, Haynesworth (1st time Kearse)= Floyd Reese/Jeff Fisher
KVB = Jim Schwartz was waiting in KVB’s driveway at 12:01 at the star of free agency…
KB = Torn ACL at the end of the season in his last year…
We really don’t have a pattern with this current F.O. yet…
actually not quite right
Haynesworth was not under Reese, it was Reinfeldt. The pattern is Haynesworth, KVB, KB, Tully, and now Cortland don’t hear one damn word from the front office until another team picks them up in free agency. In Finnegan’s case, he was even lied to by the front office that a deal would be reached before the season began.
Also with Finnegan it’s not so much about the money. The man has given more money back to the community than any other Titan. He just wants to finish his career where he started and remain in Nashville.
Pass defense
is huge for me. I hate watching crappy pass defenses. And it’s tough. Particularly with rules changes in the past five years and some very dominant passing quarterbacks around, pass defenders have a big challenge.
Finnegan is worth paying, unless we can get a guy we know for certain is better. I’m pretty sure the answer to that is going to be “no, we can’t”, so as I’ve said here before, I have zero problem with them overpaying him a bit for the role he has moved into. It’s a very effective role, and we desperately need our defense to improve, not take one step forward and two steps back.
I am almost positive that his grousing is not because he’s worried about paying the bills, but because he’s very serious about not wanting to move his family.
Translation
Don’t franchise him, give him a three year contract for pretty good money but not top five CB money. Top tenish over three. Five year contract probably a bit too long-term for my comfort.
Other FA's
With Michael Griffin, Jake Scott, Jason Jones, and Ahmard Hall all free agents, and Roos and Stewart coming up after next year, I think the best thing may be to let Finnegan walk, sign a nickel back to play with Verner and McCourty. The Titans can’t afford to let any of the other 4 go this year. They need to franchise Griffin, they can’t let him go most of all, he’s top priority, you can’t go into the offseason looking for 2 safety’s.
