Our WRs Lack Versatility
MCM, we have a problem. It's not breaking news, but it has been overshadowed by the suckiness of CJ and the offensive line.
It's called the Titans receiving core, and if you haven't noticed, it's hurting our offense arguably as much as the running game's woes are.
The reason our passing game is suffering can be simplified into this: "Kenny Britt injured"
.. But there are plenty of offenses that lose their star WR's and don't suddenly turn into Pop Warner passing games.
Take for example the Texans. When they lost Andre Johnson earlier this year, they didn't suddenly shut it down. Their passing game still succeeded even when the running game sputtered.
That's because unlike them, our wide receivers are geniune role players and nothing more. Take them out of their roles and ask more of them... and they struggle.
With KB, our receiving core was like this:
#1: Kenny Britt
#2: Nate Washington
#3: Damian Williams
#4: Marc Mariani/Lavelle Hawkins
We succeeded with the above group.
Without KB, it's basically this:
#1: Nate Washington
#2: Damian Williams
#3: Marc Mariani/Lavelle Hawkins
The reason our wide receiver core is suddenly so terrible is because the loss of Britt has thrown all our wide receivers into roles they're simply not good at.
Nate Washington: He is tough, and is a great #2 wide receiver. Earlier in the year he was able to take advantage of the attention KB was attracting and make plays.
However, it's been apparent that Nate just isn't good enough to be a #1 wide receiver in the NFL. He is much better suited to the number two spot.
Damian Williams: He is inconsistent, but not too inconsistent for a 3rd option. However, the number two option on a team has to be consistent enough to make plays when the #1 is attracting all the attention. Damian's inconsistency makes him a bad #2 WR but makes him a #3 that can be tolerated.
Marc Mariani/Lavelle Hawkins:
Mariani is to us as Devin Hester is to the Bears. He's great at returns but not very good at being a true wide receiver. He's poor at running routes and catching the ball as a receiver, but once he gets the ball he's very elusive and has good vision.
Part of that is also true for Lavelle Hawkins. Hawkins sucks at running routes, getting lined up, catching the ball, and basically being a wide receiver in general... but if you manage to get him the ball, he can make guys miss. Remember the time he made a first down by making 6 defenders miss? Yeah. That's his game and all his game is. If Mariani wasn't such a great return man, he'd be in the same boat as Hawkins.
This isn't really a negative for either guys as 4th-stringers, but when Nate and Damian can't make a play, Marc and Lavelle are the next guys our QB has to progress to, and since they both suck at running routes... they're usually not open or not in the right place.
That's the problem here. We have an injury-prone beast of a wide receiver in Kenny Britt, and a receiving core that entirely depends on that same injury-prone beast staying healthy.
Either Nate has to turn into superman (Which he's currently trying to do), Damian has to lose his inconsistency overnight, or Marc and Lavelle have to suddenly transform into actual wide receivers.
In short, our receivers have to suddenly become more versatile and adapt to their roles without KB in. Otherwise, our passing offense won't improve.
Nate has shown the most desire to adapt to his new responsibility as #1 WR, and Damian Williams also showed desire to be a solid #2 a few weeks ago, but has since fell back into being the inconsistent 3rd option playing as a number two WR. Neither of them are fixing our passing offense, even if they're trying to.
So, honestly, I'm interested... What IS our solution to this personnel problem?
Do we need to retool who we have, address it in the upcoming draft, just pray that Kenny Britt finds a way to stay healthy, or hope Jake Locker can pull a Brady/Manning/Brees when he takes over the offense and make all of these guys better?
What should we do to fix this mess?

If the Titans are serious about contending then they have to take or trade up for....
one of the top WRs coming out next year. They probably won’t have the budget to bring in a top FA WR after retooling the Oline and paying our elite playmaker ’09 2,000 yd runner. Britt will most likely not make it through a full season next year and they need someone else explosive in the passing attack.

Now for my serious post
I agree, this group of WR’s has no one that really puts the fear of God in the opposing DB’s. I’m loving what Nate is doing but like you said he’s better suited as a #2. Having Britt healthy for a full season would change things dramatically but adding a really really good WR through the draft or FA would give us more quality depth if Britt (or Nate) were to go down next season. Jake needs all the toys he can get …

The last of our wide receivers to...
A: Have a prime stretch of a career and
B: Played for us while they were in it
was Derrick Mason.
And we had a top 5 passing attack with
Mason (prime)
Drew Bennett
Justin McCareins
Tyrone Calico
Erron Kinney (TE)
& a dilapidated Frank Wycheck that caught only 17 balls that year…..
oh yeah and we almost went to the AFC Championship.
That’s what we can with just ONE legit wide receiver in their prime (or maybe just a consistent possession receiver in their prime). Everyone else they had catching the ball that year pretty much sucked ass or didn’t have an NFL career 2 years after that.
You know what else about that year? We didn’t have a single running back average over 4.0 ypc … sound familiar yet?
We could be one wide receiver and a pass rush away from looking like a legitimate team again. (if only it were that simple)

Also speaking of statistics and comparing new with old ....
take a side by side look at Matt Hasselbeck’s career stats with that of Steve McNair’s …. it’s bizarrely similar if not identical.
Hbeck – yds – 32,503 , ypc – 6.9 , td/int ratio 1.36, completion 60.2%, QB rating – 82.1
Mac 9 – yds – 31,304 , ypc – 6.9 , td/int ratio 1.46, completion 60.1%, QB rating – 82.8
McNair had the edge in his run game obviously but only early in his career.
They both went to and lost one Super Bowl. Both had stellar RB’s that declined rapidly. Both never had an elite wide receiver talent.

Interesting, but stats don´t come close to defyning McNair´s career.
Besides his stas, he was a true leader, a great teamate, an inspirational presence for everyone around him.
And he made the fans feel like one of them was there playing QB and giving all the effort for the good of the titans/oilers.
For all the nutcases we´ve had over the years, Steve´s legend only grows bigger and bigger in my memory.
"He's an amazing talent. He's probably the most explosive back since Marshall Faulk and Barry Sanders." - Eddie George, about CJ.
of course ... I'm not comparing their heart or will or anything
but just looking at pure passing stats it’s quite interesting.
They both played/have played for 13 years.

well yeah that didn't hurt
but look at my mcnair/hasselbeck comparison above …. if Locker can exceed Hasselbeck’s passing play then he’d exceed McNair’s …. and if Britt stays healthy and/or we draft another stud WR we could be looking at some good stuff.

Thing is, how many of those WRs went on to have equal or better careers?
and all of them are low round/ undrafted receivers, save for Tyrone Calico… which he was terrible anyway.
Which is pretty identical to our situation now…
- definitely made those receivers better then they were. Derrick Mason went on to have a decent career, but never had the same success that he had here.
I really believe in our situation, other then Kenny Britt, is it going to take another #9 type ability to make these scrap heap receivers realize their potential. I hope #10 can do that for us.

wait... are you asking how many of those other 2003 titan WRs went on to have equal or better careers as Mason?
cause the answer is god-no.
Bennett had one good year the following season and fizzled out.
McCareins never broke 1,000 yards or 60 catches in a season
Erron Kinney was literally out of football 2 years later
Same for Calico
Derrick Mason had 5 more 1,000 yard seasons AFTER that ‘03 season and is a few accomplishments away from a HOF career IMO …. accomplishments he can’t reach now..but still. Oh yeah and Mason is still playing even though he was drafted 4 years before any of those other players.

Running Joke
With Texans Fans is we have 12 TE’s on the roster. And when our only real threat at WR went down the TE’s were the players that had their targets amped up. The Patriots show with their two TE’s how a passing game can evolve from WR’s being the main threat to the versatile TE. (Moss to Gronkowski) The Saints, and Packers both employ multiple TE sets throughout this season, and both have playoff spots locked up.
Imo, maybe WR isn’t the answer your looking for, but another TE that would take some of the pressure off Jared Cook.

Cook is serviceable at the very least.
My point is we don´t know their true potential unless someone throws the ball to them on a regular basis.
Scaife proved that if you throw enough, even an average player may produce good numbers.

And I'd only consider him adequate.
We don’t have a single “good” TE on the roster. Sorry, criollo, but I don’t buy that we have to throw to them on a regular basis to find that out. They’re not getting thrown to because they’re not getting open and/or suck. And even when Cook catches the ball, he finds ways to screw it up.

Best thing they can do for Locker is get him a consistent TE & a big body WR. This roster is full of smaller quick guys. They need to get a “jump ball” type guy, IMO. Somebody he can just throw it up to & expect him to come down with it.
