Munchak: Matt Hasselbeck is Still Titans Starting QB
Mike Munchak announced at his weekly press conference that Matt Hasselbeck will be the starting quarterback against the Jaguars on Saturday if he is healthy enough to play, and he said there is no reason to believe that he will not be healthy enough to play. I find it really hard to believe that no one asked Munchak why Hasselbeck was limping on a stretch play if he is so healthy.
The scary thing to me here is that all of the things that Mike Munchak sounded an awful lot like Jeff Fisher in his answers today. It is clear to anyone who has watched Hasselbeck play over the last few weeks that something is not right- well clear to everyone except Munch.
Again, my point here is that Matt Hasselbeck is not healthy right now. It is obvious by the fact that he refuses to throw the ball more than 10 yards down the field. That is why Jake Locker should be the starter this week. He is healthy and gives the Titans the better chance to win.

Hasselback isnt that good
Everyone was giving him a pass when the passing game was not working and blaming the receivers…Locker seems to find guys down the field and be able to target cook…I think Hasselback’s play has been mediocre to poor for most of the year, except when Kenny Britt was around…

IMO they both should be cut going into next year
I wouldn’t bat an eye if Hawk and Cook aren’t in Columbia blue next year. DWill will get a break because he is only a 2nd year player in his first season in this pop-gun offense of ours. We need to get more offensive weapons and pass rushers in this years draft. Or we won’t be in position to even talk about making the playoffs.

Unless Hawk makes some changes in the offseason, you're probably right.
I think Cook will be back though. DWill definitely. But seeing as how they won’t put Locker in right now, who knows how quick they are to cut ties with Hawk.
Hawk does have an opportunity in the next two games to show what he has, though. I got a rookie autographed jersey card of him that I’ve been hoping not to throw in a shoebox for storage. I hope he does pick it up so the card gains value, and more importantly so he helps my favorite color of laundry win some games this year and next.
I wish i was there

Meh, 7-9 still is more than i expected and if Hass isnt healthy and Munch is doing this, there has to be a player in the draft he wants so bad that he will drop the next two games. Better draft position or a chance at playoffs, at this point im fine with either

Being under Fisher for so long
And with the QB issues most recent prior to 2011 I can see why he wouldnt want to rush Locker into this. And i was fine with Munch trying to go with Hass til the half. But he didnt make proper adjustments (if any) at half. I can chalk it up for now to him learning but I hope its just that.

People make a big deal out of the Fisher-Munchak dynamic,
but I do think its every coach. Look at Frazier. He waited until McNabb had pieced together several putrid, absolutely awful performances and was left with no choice but to go with Ponder. But its clear he didn’t make that move ’till he absolutely could not leave McNabb in any longer.

In hal's alternate reality where every coach's first season predicts their future:
1. Bill Belichick never won more than 6 games
2. Tom Coughlin sucks and never led a team to the playoffs.
3. With Fisher, you’ll be lucky to win one game a year.
4. Vince Lombardi was an average coach.
5. Every Bill Parcells team was a loser.
6. Mike Munchak turns out to be the next Mike Singletary.

I understand where you're coming from Hal.
I think we have to give Munchak at least another year, but Palmer has to go. He in no way is competent enough to coach an NFL offense.
"I can name 31 other starting running backs that would have made that play" 104.5 the zone
I think he truly believes that Hasselbeck gives us a better chance to win
But I think his opinion is based on the entire year instead of the last 5 (or so) games. As an NFL Coach, I think a certain amount of stability vs reactionary behavior is expected and respected. If he benches Hasselbeck and starts Locker there’s no going back so I think he probably wants to be 100% sure.
I think all of this and I still think he’s wrong.
by theologic on Dec 19, 2011 4:13 PM CST reply actions 5 recs
That's actually a good theory.
Although considering Hasselbeck is banged up I think it could easily be said Locker is starting due to injury, mitigating the whole “We’re in the Jake Locker Era now and can never go back!” thing.
But I could definitely see an old-school coach believing the veteran gives the best chance to win, and maybe thinking in the back of his mind that once they go with Locker, they have to commit to him and not wanting to cause any schisms in the locker room over that.

I think the media would believe the "due to injury" excuse
But Hasselbeck would know the truth and likely the rest of the team would too. I think Hasselbeck’s calf is hurting him, but I think the real issue is that his arm has worn down as the year has gone on. Maybe he realizes it and maybe he doesn’t. However, I don’t care how nice a guy he is he’s not going to openly admit he can’t throw the ball for a full year anymore. That type of admission could cost him a million dollars or more.
Nor would I expect him to.
He’s a veteran start who’s had success in this league. That’s where you do need to fault Munchak and Palmer for not pulling him yesterday then explaining it afterwards. Doesn’t have to be due to performance, can just be chalked up to injury. Might have tempered any sort of controversy that has now risen.

Football is a game of adjustments.....
If you don’t make them, you lose. Moreover, it doesn’t help the Jakes confidence to keep being thrown into situations where we only have a hope, a prayer, and a few minutes on the clock. Clearly Matt was limping on the first play of the game. Munchak is not exactly inspiring confidence in his decison making as a leader this season.

A healthy Hasselbeck > any rookie QB in the NFL...
The trouble is, he isn’t healthy. He looked terrible yesterday, along with the majority of his teammates, but that goes without saying… Jake is twice as fast, appears to have twice the arm strength, & because of his mobility the backside Will & End have to stay at home, leaving them susceptible to CJ’s cut backs… I’m worried about a defense game-planning for Locker & seeing something we don’t and making him look like a rookie QB, but at this point that’s a chance I’d be willing to take. Jake Locker > an injured Matt Hasselhoff… The bottom line after yesterday: “I just want to feel like a winner!”

What is really frustating considering
Background is the continued suckitude of the running game. IMO CJ needs an offensive line of Abrams tanks to be successful. If somebody breathes on him he falls down. You keep expecting a burst that never happens. Makes you wonder if there is a physical problem or if he has just lost it either mentally or physically.

This is saying a lot, but I don't think I've ever seen this much overreaction on this site.
A coach decides to stick with a veteran QB over throwing in the rookie, and some people would have you believe he’s not capable of coaching a pop warner team. This is just getting ridiculous.
The coaching staff in general has done a good job this year, based on our actual number of wins versus expected number of wins, but one bad game and one controversial decision, and we’re ready to can Munchak.
I’d personally love to see Locker out there. I think he’s a more skilled QB than Hass and probably even gives us the best chance to win the next two games, but it seems evident to me that they are reluctant to play Locker this year. Rest assured that the coaches are not idiots. They know what they are doing at least to an extent, or they wouldn’t have ever become NFL coaches to start with. That doesn’t mean they don’t make mistakes, but if they have a plan, and that plan is to sit Locker this year, then I don’t have any issue with a coaching staff sticking to the plan.

For the love of God, this.
Even in my most pessimistic moments (and trust me, I can get pretty goddamn pessimistic), I don’t understand the “OMG FIRE MUNCH” outbursts. Yeah, Locker might give us a better chance to win, but I’m not terribly concerned about the playoffs this year anyway honestly. I had us ending up at 6-10 at the beginning of the season and we could feasibly hit 9-7 with a little luck and some guys stepping up against the Houston IRans. Realistically this is not a team that’s going deep into the playoffs yet. We have a new HC, OC, and DC who, for the most part, have done a damn good job inheriting this team on a short offseason. We might be able to field a solid playoff team next year as far as I’m concerned (especially if we can have another draft like this past one), but we do have holes that need addressed this offseason before we can start thinking about deeper playoff runs. It’s not as if fan support is waning due to the past few years (at least as far as I know, we’ve sold out every game for some time now) and there’s a young core of guys upon which we can build.
Give it time, let the coaches grab more personnel for their schemes, let everyone get settled in (especially Locker and Munch). This is not a “WIN NOW” team, this is a team that needs a little more time to grow and solidify. Patience, bros.
The people who are saying our coaching staff sucks are saying so because it is the truth.
The only coaches that are doing their job are Gray and Ragone, and Munchak is meh. The rest of them have done a terrible job of getting our team ready to play on Sundays. We’ve had one impressive win all season, and now four terrible losses. Am I supposed to be okay with the fact the we are the fifth team in NFL history to lose to a team that is 0-13?
"I can name 31 other starting running backs that would have made that play" 104.5 the zone
You're right, the coaches all suck.
They really didn’t get the team ready to play those 7 times we won (which is 3 more times than a lot of people expected).
I didn’t realize they sucked before, but now that you’ve informed me of how “meh” Munchak is, it’s all very clear.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"
by TennesseeTyrants on Dec 20, 2011 10:30 AM CST up reply actions
Yep your sarcasm is awesome.
It’s not like we are the laughing stock of the NFL right now or anything. It’s not like if we won on Sunday we would be the 6th seed right now. I guess we didn’t just lose to one of the worst teams to ever set foot on an NFL field. Yea the MCM love for our coaches is baffling to me.
"I can name 31 other starting running backs that would have made that play" 104.5 the zone
It's not some blind love.
I realize they made mistakes. I hated the gameplan as much as the next guy. But one bad loss does not mean the entire coaching staff sucks. You can’t determine their worth on one game.
Were they the best coaching staff in the world after the Baltimore win, the Carolina blowout, etc? No, probably not. Do they absolutely blow now after 1 bad loss? No, not any more than they were the best in the world just a few weeks ago.
You have to look at the entire body of work, and the entire (still small) body of work has surpassed my expectations for this season. Going into the season, most people thought we were a team that would finish in the bottom quarter of the league. Tell me that CJ would regress to one of the worst backs in the league, and I might predict we would be looking at the number 1 overall pick. But here we sit, upset because we just missed out on our best shot at the playoffs. And we’ll still probably finish at .500.
On the whole, that’s a hell of a job of coaching, from the outside.
Now, you can sit there and call a coach “meh” and talk about how they haven’t prepared the team to play all year all you want, but that’s just you running your mouth. You’re not backing that up with anything substantial. The only real way to measure the success of a coaching staff is on wins and losses, and this one has already won more games than anyone expected them to, and they have a shot at winning 2 more.
Really?
Not to say I totally disagree with you, but there is nothing to back up what I’m saying? hmmmm how bout our epic fail at O line with two hall of fame coaches? How bout the epic fail of our running game? Epic fail by our coaches. How bout the lack of in game adjustments that has lost us the Jags, Cincy, Falcons, Indy, Saints games that were all games we should have won. We should at least be at 9-5 right now, and yet we are 7-7 and just lost to one of the worst teams in football history. I guess this is all false seeing as i’m just running my mouth.
"I can name 31 other starting running backs that would have made that play" 104.5 the zone
That's my boy!
Yeah man I agree (obviously). Should have seen the game day thread…could have used your support on that day with the post I made lol. It’s still good you stayed away from that thread though.

Let's also blame Hasselbeck for not having what was supposed to be our star RB coming back en fuego with a new contract.
And a budding star WR go down early after that connection looked like dynamite. In fact, it looked like Britt was the only WR Hass really trusted deep and that he was willing to just chuck it up regardless and trust Britt.
I don’t doubt that with his improv abilities Locker may relatively be able to look “better” than Hasselbeck…but let’s not discount what Hasselbeck did all season for one terrible game.

I'm not disagreeing that he had a bad game yesterday, he did.
But to chalk up the entire team’s failure to him is not fair to the rest of the team. They all royally sucked, Hasselbeck wasn’t going to make them contain the run (which is all the defense needed to do to win that one) or CJ to return to his suckitude against one of the worst defenses in the league.

Here is where I kinda agree with Bonzos.
Whether we’re a playoff caliber team or not, or even deserve to be in them, you never know what can spark once your in. Even one and done you have slim bragging rights considering we were a supposed 3-4 win team this year.
The Force is with you, young SkyLocker, but you are not a Jedi... yet!
Disagree, I am tired of always squeaking into the playoffs
if we have a plan in motion to be great for years to come, I would rather stick to that then inch into the playoffs time after time.
And as you said above, Locker could have very well lost that game too

I think people are forgetting we’d actually have to go out there still win the games. I feel like this is a lot of Locker=wins, but unless he can tell Griffin not to take a crappy angle against Brown, or to give more of an effort to get past Dan F-ing Orlovsky, we still may be 7-7.

Right, I think people are forgetting that the rest of the team generally sucks right now
plus we’d be asking for the epic fails of a few other teams as well so by the grace of the football Gods we’d inch into the playoffs… so there was a chance it was never going to be possible in the first place. It’s not like if we beat the Colts = Playoffs.

Yep, I know.
But it’s been stated several times today they don’t deserve to be in after yesterday’s game, and while I tend to agree with that, I always want to see them in.
Personally, I think Munch already knows that next year will be Locker’s, so he’s staying with the man he recruited, who got us this far and let him finish his season hopefully on a high note. But that’s just my feeling.
The Force is with you, young SkyLocker, but you are not a Jedi... yet!

No, we don't deserve the wild card spot
The way I see it; we are a fringe mediocre team that has stumbled it’s way to a possible playoff position. We are way to far off from being anything close to a contender this year or in the future for that matter. We should just be grateful that we are having this conversation about a possible WC birth instead of being bitter because our coach values the long term solution over the short term solution. Now I don’t know about you, but one day I want to look back at these next 12 years and say, “Man am I glad we have one of the best QBs in league history leading our team.”

WHY???
Hass himself admitted he was limited physically. He can’t throw downfield at all, can’t move or buy time for his wr’s , can’t make plays with his legs if he needs to pick up a first down, and he is a banged up 37 year old QB who was serviceable in the early part of the year. He is not owed the opportunity to try and get this team in the playoffs. Munchak is not trying to lose games but it is apparent to everyone, including Hasselbeck that he is not 100%. Let Locker see what he can do with the first team and in an important game. Don’t wait until there is 7 minutes left and you’re down by 14. If it was obvious to bench Tommie Campbell for his play, put Locker in to give this team a spark. It can’t get any worse than last week….Frustrated
three words.
KENNY. FUCKING. BRITT. anyone who thinks we wouldn’t be in a far better position to take the wildcard with him on the field is a fucking moron. It’s almost like you guys forget he even exists- do you remember how insane he was the first couple of games? if we still had him, we would have at least 1 or 2 more wins. no question. so stop blaming hasselbeck, a veteran who’s proven he’s committed to the team, when in reality Chris Johnson has decided to suck and we’re missing arguably our best weapon. He should start because he’s the STARTER, and skylocker is the BACKUP (remember the original plan? yeah, lets stick to that). this is a crippled offense that will be fine next year with some good moves in FA and the draft

I was hoping Jake would get the nod, but we need to step back for a second and realize that we aren’t NFL coaches…. We’re just people on the Internet who are still (and rightly so) pissed over a shitty loss to a bad team. This will pass. We’ll beat the kitties. Chill
Holding a snocone sign...
Munch knows if he starts locker he has to stick with him.
The coaches like what they have seen from locker, just like us. But they wanna make completely sure he is going to be in position to succeed. Give us another draft like this one, and a move or two in free agency. Then insert locker.

Can't believe all this Munch hating.
The man inherited a dumpster fire, but he still has a playoff shot if he can get some effective QB play. Still, he must certainly realize that this team is no threat to win an AFC championship, so he has to think about next year, too.
So what must he do? He must put the best team he can on the field for now, and worry about next year when the Titans are done.in this one. Apparently, he thinks Hassleback is his best option today. He has to take that option, even if it has a limp. In the background, he has to make his plans to develop Locker next year.

It’s because you play semantics in a way that measures up to a politician’s level. You put words in people’s mouths, you pull strawman arguments, and you call people’s characters into question.
The last time we had an issue, I called you out on your semantics during an actual legitimate discussion about Hasselbeck, and you called me a troll for calling you out on it.
To be honest, after you called me a troll, I sat there for a moment in disbelief at you being serious over it.

I'm of the opinion now where, with just 2 games left in the season, that it just doesn't matter who plays QB.
You could point to any particular loss we’ve had and call it the one that screwed us over in terms of the playoffs. I personally can’t see us making the playoffs right now. What are these 2 insignificant games going to matter in Locker’s development? If the coaches want to roll with Hasselbeck, it’s their decision. Many of us would like to see Locker, sure, but in the end, is it REALLY going to be the difference that would or would not have sent us to the playoffs? Maybe so. No one can say for sure.
Munchak’s made some questionable decisions this year, he’s a rookie head coach. Here’s to hoping next year, he’s on his game, Hasselbeck or Locker is on their game, Britt’s healthy, the o-line doesn’t blow, and CJ revives his 09 form from the dead.

Another positive was that
The game was so boring that I was numb to it all. Pain is better when you’re almost comatose.
In other news. I heard Sam Hurd is available.
Hasselbeck since week 10 (Carolina, game 9 of our season)
910 YDS, 95 for 158, 60% comp. 5.75 YPA, 2 TD, 6 INT. Highest QB rating (excluding NO because he played so little) is 79.1.
I don’t think I am wrong in saying he was been playing very poorly.

It should be noted that Hass still has 9% better accuracy over Locker.
And if they’re dead set on running this compacted, timing offense, that favours Hass.

In the Saints game they showed that they aren't dead set on running a dink and dunk offense with Locker in.
Whether or not the offense they run with Hasselbeck is a coaching decision based on his ability or his limitations is not something i know. But i doubt they run the same offense with Locker in.

I would expect the offense to change dramatically when Locker goes in too.
We should see a more wide open offense. Its important to note that while the offense was more aggressive in Locker’s playing time, most of the games the offense was in prevent. And he’s explicitly said that.

Switching QBs is usually a shot in the arm.
Let me put it this way. The careers of Mike Reinfeldt, Mike Munchak and this whole coaching staff rest on Jake Locker. Mess up, and its game over for all of them. If I were Mike Munchak, I’d be spending every waking minute deciding what to do with him, when to play him, etc. Many here have voiced that they feel he’s unqualified to make that decision, and you have some grounds for that. I certainly was vocal when they hired him. He was underqualified compared to other candidates. But now that they’ve hired him, he deserves the right to fail/succeed by his own terms, don’t you think?

Or atleast the owner’s terms. But i can certainly disagree with his terms. I don’t want him fired or anything, but I find a hard time finding how he can say Hasselbeck is going to give us a better shot.
Also, while it is usually a shot in the arm to switch QBs, i don’t think thats the only thing at play here.

No, you're not.
Just the argument you’re trying to make with Hasselbeck’s poor stats. That’s what, in my opinion at least, you’re wrong with.
You have to look beyond the numbers and see the reality of the situation:
1. He’s been injured since this streak of poor play started
2. Our wide receiving core is poor.
3. Our pass blocking has allowed a ton of pressure to get to him, and it’s well-known that Hass plays poorly with bad pass pro.
4. Our offense is out of sync all the time.
etc etc etc

I agree with that, but I trust there is a good reason we haven't already handed the reigns to Locker.
Besides, the plan has been to keep Hass in there so that Locker doesn’t have to start in his rookie year, and can instead learn so that his future is even brighter.
Locker’s future development is more important than the present, imo.

It comes down again to the argument over whether or not him starting is hugely detrimental.
Which isn’t really something anybody is going to waver on. I firmly believe based on the (admittedly limited) things I have seen out of Locker that starting him against teams like Atlanta, TB, Buffalo, and the Colts would not have hindered his development. But that is just my opinion, and clearly the coaches don’t share that.

I don't believe it's hugely detrimental, no.
But there is still a risk it could be detrimental to throw him in a garbage offense like ours against an underrated Jags D and the Texans defense.
What’s the point in risking it? To make the playoffs when we clearly aren’t playoff team material this year?

Before the Colts game I would have said making the playoffs, and possibly winning a playoff game.
Because if we had won out we would have likely faced Houston again, and if we beat them once it would have been possible to beat them again.
Now, I would say the purpose of it is game experience. It’s no secret i believe that sitting is all fine and dandy, but you need some real game experience to begin to truly grow. The game experience for Locker in these last 2 games could allow him to hit the ground running next year with a healthy and hopefully better offense, in my opinion.

I agree somewhat with your assessment.
I believe we should allow Locker to play the Jaguars as a starter, and then put Hasselbeck back in against the brutal Texans defense after having a week to heal up.
That gives us a proper sample of Locker vs. an underrated Jags defense w/ starters’ time, and healthy Hass vs. a tough Texans defense w/ starters’ time.
Though, there has to be a reason the coaching staff is still with Hass for both games, and I believe it has to do with an unrevealed flaw in Locker that they’re trying to get hammered out before giving him a game as a starter.

Footwork and timing I think are too things he needs to work on.
We’ve seen him still struggle on the short stuff. Those things need to be worked on. Plus fixing those will help the accuracy, which we all agree he needs to work on. And I’m certainly just watching that with an untrained eye. I’m sure Palmer’s got some things for him to work on.

Yes. There will come a time when I say "He can't learn anything else by sitting."
But that’s not today. I want his footwork to be absolutely perfect before putting him in. Otherwise, the work is all for naught. As soon as he gets pressured frequently (and with our line there’s a good chance that happens early), its just natural to resort back to what worked before, and what you’re most comfortable with.

And believe me, I will side with you on this debate in two weeks. But there are times when you still see him do things that make you think he’s still a little unpolished. I’ve got the Saints game on the DVR. There are few overthrows he should have made. There is also a three step drop, out route he throws into the dirt. Stuff like that.
Now, in a disclaimer, the pass in the dirt I’m thinking of, he may have said that he did that on purpose because he was worried about the play or something of that sort, but when I heard that I wasn’t completely sure which play he was talking about.

I think game time experience is important.
And there’s a balance to be struck, there.
But I think if your mechanics are firm habits, when the pressure is one, QBs will tend to revert back to their old bad habits.
I think it makes sense to get Locker’s mechanics as good as we can before we put him in pressure cooker situations.
All that said, I’ve been very impressed with Locker’s cool demeanor under pressure so far. He’s got the kind of moxy that’s going to make him really good when he does actually get to start.

Possible Munch reasoning on why he won't start Locker...
Because Locker did not win the last 2 games. Simple as that. Yes I know, Locker is probably the best option to win right now if he was to start a full game but because Locker wasn’t able to pull a Montana/Elway/ or whoever, insert your favorite 4th qtr. comeback QB in the blank _________ the last 2 weeks, Munch still has the option to start Hass because of that reason and get away with it.
Now, if Locker had of pulled off those last 2 games and gave us the victory, Munch would almost have no choice but to put Locker in for good and let him do his thing. But since that didn’t happen, he probably feels he can still use the ‘veteran starts before rookie’ excuse as long as Hass can still walk onto the field. I know it sucks, but that’s the way they do shit in the NFL most of the time.

It's Jefferson Tardship up in this piece!
I’m all for a coach staying the course, sticking with his plan…but when the plan is obviously not working, you make adjustments. I like Munch and I like Hasselbeck, but now is the time to go with Locker. Hasselbeck played well early in the season, and he’s been the best leader we’ve had in years, so it’s a tough decision to make. Munch needs to step up and make the tough decision, though…start Locker!
While it is a team game, the QB is key.
A crushing defense or an amazing running back can hide poor QB play. Right now, the Titans have neither. Hass has done better than expected, but production has dropped. While I understand that the coaches have inside information, they are also held back by tradition and philosophy. I believe that the Steelers fell to the same hubris when they let Ben play last night.
The quotes sounded like Fisher/Munch speak – “He was deemed healthy enough to play, we always like what Ben provides us, not only from his quality of play but his leadership. This guy is a tremendous competitor. We appreciate his efforts. Obviously, we fell short tonight.”
When your QB is limping after every play, can’t run from a tackle, can’t throw the ball, pull him.
IMO Munchack is Fisher 2.0
Can’t see the forest for the trees.
