Colts 27 Titans 13 Quick Recap

I did not think I could get any more angry than I was after the game last week. Then this week rolls around and last week seems like one of the best days of my life. Gramsey just texted me that this is the worst loss in the Titans era. I am not sure that is the case, but it is no doubt top 5.

I am angry at so many people. I am angry at Chris Johnson for making no effort to catch a pass that was thrown his way and returned for a touchdown. I am angry at Jared Cook for being the worse tight end in Titans' history. I am angry at Chris Palmer for calling a running play that didn't work over and over and over. I am angry at Mike Munchak for leaving a clearly banged up Matt Hasselbeck in for 3 1/2 quarters. He was limping on a handoff on the first play of the game for crying out loud. I am angry at the defense for giving up long rushing plays over and over to a rushing attack that is terrible.

There are so many more things I will have to say, but that is all I can stand to write at this point. Tune in to MCM Radio at 4. It won't be fun, but I can promise you it will be entertaining.

but if we win the last two games, Jets lose against Eagles and Giants, Bengals loses against Ravens, and Raiders lose against Chargers, we’re in. Not at all impossible.

Things people need to remember.

Matt Hasselbeck is not Kerry Collins. Not ever remotely close, so don’t act like he is an awful quarterback. Locker may be better, but no need for so much Hasselbeck hate.

Also, why the hell would we fire Mike Munchak?

Anyone saying fire Munch is an idiot. This season has been a huge success. Rebuilding year in every facet of the team except RB and GM and we still get 7 wins with two left? Sign me up.

Hass isn’t KC, but he has been very bad the last few games. Whether its the fact that his shiny new sheen has worn off or nagging injuries or whatever it is I dunno but he has been pretty pathetic.

Can't lay it all on Hass...

…when his receiving corp just can’t get open, and when they do get open they drop the ball half the time. Plus when the “playmaker” isn’t making plays, that just makes it doubly tough. Still….I am in favor of handing the keys of the car to Locker the next two weeks, whether Hass is healthy, or not.

Head coach doesn't mean he game plans.

Yeah, some coaches run the show on one side of the ball or the other, but I expect the head coach to be more of a manager and oversee everything, not be involved in the Xs and Os and developing gameplans like the coordinators should.

I wouldn't put the whole game on Munch, but he deserves his fair share of the blame.

Palmer has no idea how to run an NFL offense. I just don’t see how we could go two weeks in a rwo putting up 6 points in the first half against those two defenses. I hope we get Turner next year for OC.

Personel decisions are based on more than just who is better than who. Plus, given the fact that there has been a shortened offseason with limited player contact coming off of a tumultuous 6-10 season. I’m astonished that we aren’t 1-13 at this juncture of the season. Munchack has done a terrific job with the situation he has been given.

Silver lining.

This saves me the optimism for the last two games of the year only to have my hopes shattered. Teams that lose to the Colts/Jags don’t deserve to make the playoffs. We’ve been an average football team all year, and we were somehow fooled into thinking we were a fringe playoff football team. Maybe. That's so hard to say because the only glimpses we've got were when we were playing from behind against softer coverage.

We have no idea how he’d play through the first 3 quarters. Remember, until the INT, Hasselbeck was also moving the ball against the soft coverage. The glimpses we’ve seen look good, but you can’t exactly extrapolate that to a full game.

A hell of a lot better than Hasselbeck. Its like Hasselbeck starts off a pass play knowing he won’t throw it further than 4 yards.

Exactly...

I would like to see how Jake does against a defense who didn’t prepare for a QB with cinder blocks tied to his ankles. However it works both ways, Jake has only played in games where he was in desperation mode, with Palmer dialing up big plays. If he can get a start and go through a scripted 15 he may look even better than he has.Defenses will be respecting the run early in the game and that will allow Palmer to work play action & get him on the edges, get him on the move where he’s most effective.

This team has so much talent and we can’t beat the worst team in the league this year..Our head coach decided to put in our best chance to win with 7mins to go,the play calling this entire game was garbage, and I can’t believe how many missed tackles and the overall lack of effort by the defense. In all today was a miserable day to be a titans fan, and our head coach has some serious explaining to do. We have a star in Jake Locker and a young defense that could very well be dangerous, add that with the right coaching staff and were a every year playoff contending team.

this was a rebuilding season

the fact that we’re 7-7, still remotely in the playoff hunt, and that our first round QB has shown flashes of promise and development should be enough reason to keep a level head.
we thought this team was going to win 4 or less games at the beginning of the season. so lets calm down on the fire munchak, and hasselbeck sucks. hass did what he could, but now its locker’s time. lets chill out, look forward to these last two game with our young QB, and look forward to the future.

I officially don't care who's on the Titans anymore, i just want a Super Bowl.

Any Sunday. Let’s not forget the Colts are a professional team. We looked ok with Locker, I honestly think its time to pass the torch to him. Hasselbeck has not looked good for like the past 7 games.

On the Bright Side....

…Colts just need to beat Jags and/or Texans and have Vikings and/or Rams to lose and the Colts no longer get another decade long all-pro QB in Luck.

Locker

There is no way that a banged up, almost 37 year old QB gave us a better chance than a young, mobile, healthy QB. Why this allegiance to these veterans? Fisher did it, now Munchak. He led us to an early 3-1 record and then was unbelievably inconsistent the rest of the way. I was tired of the play calling, the same little dump-offs, throwing off his back foot on the last INT….That was a disgrace. locker should have been in there after half. Am I missing something? So what if Hass has been there before? Today, he was clearly not healthy and should not have been in there. But I’m sure he’ll trot on to the field next week ….

The team looked completely uninspired today. Watching some of the players reminded me of how they played for Fisher in his waning days. I think the coaches have to get the blame today. I am also getting sick of Munchak looking like a wax statue. His facial expressions don’t change. I think the coaching staff has potential but you would not believe it from today. Hopefully a full off-season will turn things around.

Rewrite history?

You think if Ruud was healthy, McCarthy would be starting? I know Locker’s yards came in prevent, but with his mobility he can extend plays for the WR’s, something Hass can’t do. Just because Hass is not a head case it doesn’t mean we have to follow him blindly with a playoff spot on the line.

by hamiltontitan on Dec 18, 2011 3:36 PM CST reply actions

Yes, I do. Would he have replaced Ruud after one week? Probably not. But after McCarthy played so well for a couple of weeks, it was clear that Ruud was never getting his job back, healthy or not.

You can say all you want about how we should pull Hass, and I agree with you, but saying Munchak is as loyal to vets as Fisher was is just not true. Take a look at how many rookies are starting and tell me that again.

Its early, obviously, but Frazier has done less with more than Munchak.

He, along with the GM, brought McNabb in.
Instead of going young like we did, they still have several aging players on their roster. Wanted to keep it together for a shot this year at a playoff spot, but that has, in my opinion, left them a step behind us in the rebuild.
Spielman may be fired this year, that can’t help the direction of the team.
And switching schemes is something you do before the draft and when you hire a coach. Gotta make that decision earlier.

2012: The year we clip the Hawk.

by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Dec 18, 2011 4:03 PM CST up reply actions

Fair enough.

I don’t really follow them so not entirely familiar with their roster, but they’ve definitely got more playmakers than us and have done nothing.

I’m kind of giving a mulligan on this season for us, there are definitely signs of hope for the future and I’m hopeful next year we will see big improvement and a better sense of what this staff wants to do.

When Hasselbeck limped around after handing the ball off, he needed to come out right after that play… We might need 2 think about all the head coaches that would love to come in and coach a roster FULL of talent. Just saying that that should be an option our front office takes a look at.

Despite our dashed playoff hopes, our terrible offense and the ugliest loss in sometime, we cannot fire the coaches. We would never get another head coach again. Seriously though, I’m disappointed but everyone needs to take a bigger-picture look. I’m ticked we blew playoff hopes today (maybe…), but before this season how many of us even expected them to be in the hunt at this point in the season? We are exactly what I thought we’d be…an average team with its ups, and some terrible downs.

He was moving the ball downfield on the two drives prior.

Cook botched a fumble.

Then, Roos just blows a simple stunt. A play which any quarterback would reasonably expect the Tackle to be able to kick out the DT. That INT didn’t stem from the injury…there just wasn’t room to step into the throw.

Down late in the game and desperate for a play. That assignment was blown in a half a second and Hasselbeck's eyes were down field.

He probably should have taken the sack, but elected to take a risk on a ball he obviously thought he could get more velocity on.

I'll also add.

His injury should have removed him from the lineup. Locker’s health and skillset allowed him to get the ball downfield better. I think, though, that he also benefitted from softer coverages/deeper route combinations that Matt hadn’t seen in the 1st half.

I really do think that one was all CJ's fault.

The second one is one Hass. But he could not have thrown a better ball on the first one, and CJ HAS to make that play.

by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Dec 18, 2011 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

No, but I don't think that has anything to do with the pick considering why it was a pick.

Its not an interception because the receiver was playing close and jumped the route. Its an interception because the ball hit the intended receiver in the hands and didn’t catch it.

2012: The year we clip the Hawk.

by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Dec 18, 2011 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

But when you know the opposing QB is playing like a little bitch, then its easy to jump the routes.

He didn't even really jump it, maybe a little at most.

But Hass put it right in CJ’s hands, I don’t know how you can blame him for putting it in the receiver’s hands. That one is on CJ for not wrapping it up and not making more of an effort for the catch.

But it is irrelevant!

If he had jumped the route ahead of the receiver, then I think you have more of a case. But there is nothing more Hasselbeck could do on that play. He executed it perfectly, CJ messed up and the receiver ripped it away from him.

You're singling out Hasselbeck for that play, when it was on CJ.

Hasselbeck did not have a great day, but you can’t blame him for that one. He put it on the money and CJ failed to make the easy play, that’s all there is to it.

Banned from Stampede Blue for comments made on MCM. Yes, I am a champion.

by ronburgundy7427 on Dec 18, 2011 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

I don't disagree that there is blame to go around.

Let’s say Hasselbeck throws the in route pass and the corner steps right in front and takes it to the house. Okay, then I think its fair to say that the corner easily read the play, played up based on the previous play calls, and punished Hasselbeck for playing small ball. But it didn’t happen that way.

2012: The year we clip the Hawk.

by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Dec 18, 2011 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

Do you guys have the game recorded? It's worth re-watching.

3 things:

1. Hasslebeck “half pump fakes” and then throws to Johnson, giving the defender too much time to react.
2. Even still, this guy isn’t jumping the route because of previous play calls. He’s playing off of CJ until Hasselbeck tips his hands.
3. CJ shouldn’t be playing receiver, EVER. He always waits on the ball instead of going after it. At the lowest levels of football they teach to go after the thrown football with your hands.

by SuperHorn on Dec 18, 2011 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

That could make for a long post entirely of its own.

Split out at WR is different from catching swing passes, running wheel routes, etc.

You’ve got to run the route tree (slant, hitch, out, etc.) which is different footwork. And, in some cases, you need to catch more like a receiver. That is, attacking the ball with your hands, instead of into the body. Those little nuances are tolerable in open space, but the margin for error gets thinner in tight coverage.

by SuperHorn on Dec 18, 2011 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

Don't have DVR.

Line isn't helping, but he absolutely deserves a ton of blame.

It seems every time he gets a catch, he spins or wheels around and immediately ends up going backwards. When he runs (save a few exceptions this season), he has danced around and tried one cutesy move too many. Again, he is not solely to blame but he deserves a large amount of it.

He's always done that though. When he did it against TB and Buf, people praised him for his patience. He's always danced in the backfield waiting for the hole and then exploded through it.

The difference is that no holes are ever opening now. That being said, he’s been less than perfect, for sure. He’s been pretty sad in the passing game

But you are consistently bashing a new head coach and staff who have done this with no offseason time with players, new personnel and a lot of crappy players. I don’t like bashing for the sake of bashing and essentially trolling, bring something new to the table.

I think expectations became too high after the 3-1 start.

The reality is we probably were and are a mediocre team this year, with signs of hope for the future. Let Munchak and crew get a full offseason with the players and some upgrades in personnel, then let’s judge him.

Oh, and that “Fisher disciple” has something like thirteen fourth-down conversion attempts this season, including key ones against the Ravens that directly led to the victory. You tell me if Fisher would’ve gone for it on fourth-and-two from the Ravens 30 and not kicked the field goal.

For several years now

the Titans have been capable of epic melt-down most-of-the-players-might-have-well-have-stayed-at-home losses.

This was one. It has leaked into the franchise like a contagious rot from somewhere, and has not been eliminated yet.

I’m not talking about losing games, I’m talking about games where they look just pathetic. Embarrassing.

It didn’t start with Munchak, so I’m not blaming him. I’m just afraid if you don’t root it out somehow, you become a Detroit.

Guys, I've figured it out. Munchak threw this game.

He has an agreement with the other coaches that they’ll piss away games to the Colts so they end up with three wins.

The Rams will get the #1 pick and the Colts will miss Luck.

IT ALL MAKES PERFECT SENSE.

by FYNBYAC on Dec 18, 2011 4:36 PM CST reply actions

They wouldn't.

But if the Colts get it, they probably won’t trade out. The Rams, on the other hand, could use those extra picks to shore up holes on the offensive line, WR corps, etc.

Granted, Kalil is probably far too attractive a prospect to trade out of #1, but IT’S MY FANTASY SO STOP POKING HOLES IN IT :(

Meh...I don't know.

He’s got the heart, I just think when he faces a good defense those old habits will kick back in. And despite the praise for the Patriots, their defense really isn’t that good. It’s the fear we all have with Locker, since Tebow wasn’t given a ton of time to learn from the sideline, when things break down what will he revert to? Will his throwing motion look terrible again?

Probably.

The only hope they have of making him a QB though is to keep using him in the old-school offense, and try and work on the basics in the offseason. He does seem more accurate though.

by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Dec 18, 2011 5:37 PM CST up reply actions

I think part of that is defenses ganging up to stop the run.

Pretty easy to look accurate when you’re facing single coverage and don’t have to fit it into as tight of spaces. With this deficit he’s going to have to start throwing, maybe we’ll get a better idea of where he’s at.

Basically need a three-way tie or more at 9-7.

Who knows..

I think ARI could beat CIN, especially now that AJ Green is hurt. NYJ looked like complete shit today..I think NYG can easily beat them. Maybe it could still happen..

Oh BTW for everyone that was in the survior league that i made.

well there were 2 people left starting today, but both picked wrong and so there is a 2 way tie.

I do have it set up to start again in the playoffs.

Ha ha ha NOW ESPN is going anti-Tebow.

I follow Sportscenter on Facebook and they’ve got something up that says “Tebow who?” Honestly now EAPN, honestly…now they’ll jump back on the Patriots bandwagon.
