Tennessee Titans Daily Links: Titans Crack The Top 10 Edition
Jurrell Casey ranks as the 8th best rookie so far this season, according to PFF.
PFF also manages to throw some cold water on the Titans' performance against the Saints.
The Titans continued their rise through the DVOA rankings, and finally cracked the top 10 overall.
The Tennessean returns it's 5 Hot Topics article.
The Titans have officially put Barrett Ruud on the IR, and signed Kevin Malast off of the Jaguars' practice squad. Malast played at Rutgers with McCourty and Britt, signed with the Bears in 2009 after going undrafted, and caught on with the Titans this past offseason until getting cut before the season began. My guess is he'll pick-up some of the special teams duties of Tim Shaw, who will see more snaps with McRath and Ayers also being banged up.
Jeff Fisher's agent says the great mustachioed one will listen to 'anyone' about open coaching positions.
If we can pull off the win on Sunday, it'll be the first time we've swept the Colts since 2002.
There's speculation that Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips could be in line for another shot at being a head coach, but that was before Phillips informed the team that he will need to miss the next several weeks for unsecified medical reasons.

Re: PFF
While it wasn’t a rah-rah piece, I thought this was relatively sound analysis:
Locker Beats Mental Pressure, but not Defensive Pressure
Give credit to Jake Locker for nearly leading his team to victory on the Titans’ last possession against a superior team and with the pressure of the Titans’ playoff hopes being realistically on the line. That being said, it’s not time to hand the reins to the rookie unless the Titans have given up on the postseason. If you look at the box score, Locker’s 9.7 yards-per-attempt, 282-yard passing performance certainly doesn’t look bad. His overall grade of -0.9 doesn’t even fully emphasize the disparity between Hasselbeck and Locker as passers. However, that grade was boosted by Locker’s running ability, and his passing grade (-3.1) paints a much clearer picture.
He made some throws that would leave the impression that he has a long-term future in the NFL, but his accuracy hasn’t yet made the leap it needs to for him to be an effective starter. He completed only 45% of his passes in all, but that percentage only gets worse the deeper you delve into the numbers. He failed to complete a pass in eight drop-backs under pressure and created three of those pressure situations himself by holding onto the ball too long. More concerning than his accuracy in the face of pressure was his accuracy any time the Saints sent the blitz: he completed five passes in 18 blitzed drop-backs. It takes time to become proficient passing under pressure, but most starting-quality NFL quarterbacks can exploit defenses when their blockers are able to pick up the blitz.
Locker needs to sit. It’s not just as simple as who gives us a better chance to win. Or, even the opponent. It’s about taking advantage of the opportunity for Locker to watch, learn, and let the game slow down for him. Coaches have said that the thing that made Rodgers so dangerous was his understanding of the game when he took over the starting job. You can’t rattle him because in the 3 years he sat behind Favre he got to study the game like a coach, and really get a grip on what defenses were trying to do. When he finally did take over, there was little that could confuse him.
I’d like to see Locker get the benefit of learning too. As a fan, we all want a look under the hood to see how our shiny new draft pick is progressing. And, we got that the past few weeks. In that glimpse, though, we’ve seen that he’s not totally ready. The good news is that even in this raw stage is he’s still probably better than our veteran who’s performing at a top15 – 20 level. That’s obviously encouraging. IMO, though, the staff would be best served to let Locker sit. NTT put it nicely in his assessment, which, for the most part, I agree with:
My biggest concern, and what I’m basically in deathly fear of, is Locker will have success as a one-read and vacate the pocket quarterback, and decide that having success as a one-read and vacate the pocket quarterback means he’s a good NFL player. We went through that experience five years ago, and it set back the franchise’s long-term development future and may well have cost us a Super Bowl in 2008. I don’t want Locker to play until he’s mentally at the point where he’s ready to display high-level quarterback skills, which I think he should be developing by the start of next year.

This, is what I am most worried about as well. I am afraid, he will start finding something that works for him out there, then stick with it. He is not a finished project and he needs to understand that he is still a student at this point. We brought Hass in for a reason, we need to let that plan materialize rather then calling for Locker to start because he showed the talent we drafted him for.

Personally I see him as a guy willing to work at his craft and not be a "one read" guy.
However, I absolutely agree with both of you in terms of him sitting. Honestly, we’ve got three games left. We can run circles around whether he should start if we’re out of the playoff race or not, and I want to see him out there too with the potential he’s shown. The reality, however, is that he is still raw and would be best served (and in the team’s best interest) by remaining on the sidelines unless needed like this past week.
I don’t think he’s going to get the Aaron Rodgers treatment, because Hass is not Favre obviously. But between sitting for three more games (really, I don’t think playing those games is going to magically speed up his development process like some seem to believe), then getting a full offseason’s work in with the system and time to work on mechanics with coaches, plus an upgraded cast around him (hopefully), THAT could do wonders for him.

Re:

Obviously health is an issue here, but before Favre had his one solid final year in Green Bay, his performance was pretty pedestrian.
QBR of 70.9 and 72.7 in the first 2 years that Rodgers was a Packer.
Hasselbeck has proven he can play at a much higher level than that when Britt is healthy. So, a lot of this is contingent on both of their abilities to stay on the field. That said, the situation here compared to Rodgers situation in GB is somewhat similar, though, and in many ways better.
Hass was Farve's back up for a bit...

This. A Thousand Times This.
I thought the biggest selling point on picking up Matt Hasselbeck was that he would be a great teacher for Locker to grow under and that he would hold the fort down and be our quarterback until Locker was ready a la Aaron Rodgers. I think to make Locker our QB now would be a mistake. As you said, he needs the time to see the game from a coaches perspective. Considering how often Hasselbeck has been injured, and I think that he has been playing hurt in those 5 games (I recall a hit I want to say against the Bengals that hurt his shoulder or hand or something). Obviously he’s going to get hurt, but also remember how great he was with Britt on the field. We’re too riled up at this point, which isn’t a bad thing, but we need to keep our eyes on the prize: Super Bowl. Locker isn’t ready. Give him more time and those professional defenses, i.e. Steelers and Ravens, will be toast. I felt confident in Hasselbeck in his ability to read defenses and only hope we play the Chargers next year so we can ruin their Christmas as VY let them ruin ours. If we put Locker in, he’ll be at the mercy of his unpolished (at this time) instincts and games like the one on Sunday will be common.

I have less fear of Locker becoming a "one-read and vacate the pocket" QB than another rookie QB playing in our division
But, I do agree Locker should continue to sit if Hasselbeck is healthy. That’s why Hasselbeck was brought in…however, it looks like Locker is going to play against the Colts, which isn’t the worst thing in the world. Once Matt is healthy, he should be the starter again…but I really like Locker’s play; it is Rodgers-esque in many ways (but he still needs to improve).
by shawneriksmith on Dec 14, 2011 10:56 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah.
The one read and vacate thing isn’t a huge concern, though it could potentially create some nasty habits…ones that would need to be coached out of him later.
It’s still apparent that he’s got a long way to go in the way of diagnosing opposing defenses, though. That isn’t a shot at him, either. At this point in his NFL development, you wouldn’t expect him to being diagnosing and manipulating defenses with ease. It’s part of the process. I think he’s better suited learning those nuances from a distance as opposed to hands on.
Love this analysis

way too much fear around here.
they drafted Locker because they believe he is the anti-VY. Locker has has struggled every step of the way to get to where he is, but if he wins a couple of games in a less than All-Pro manner he’s suddenly going to lose his mind and decide he’s ready for the Super Hall of Fame Bowlzzzzz?!!? not buying it.
just because VY was a self-absorbed, delusional dumbass doesn’t mean Locker is or ever will be. VY was the greatest thing ever coming out of college. Locker lost, and lost, and lost some more in college, and was ripped non-stop by the draft punditry. i just see absolutely no similarities between their backgrounds that would lead me to believe we have to worry about the same pitfalls.
i also have yet to hear sound reasoning as to why Locker can’t learn by doing. if he’s hitting the film room hard, it shouldn’t matter if he’s watching himself or someone else on tape. no one learns anything from the sideline. you can’t see anything, make any reads, etc. the coaching film and press box still cameras are what you learn off of. he can study both regardless of whether or not he’s playing.

well in this scenario
a) Hass will be chum out there against Freeney and Mathis if his mobility is limited at all. if we even want the option of Hass in week 16 and 17, i’d sit him this week.
b) Hass isn’t a durable guy in general. He hasn’t started 16 games since his mid 20’s. based on performance, id say wear and tear is starting to set it. one more nick to his legs probably won’t help things.
c) when you have a shot at the playoffs, you go for it. i think Locker can bring an extra boost for the last 3 games given that Hass is clearly not the same guy from the first 8 games.

Harbaugh has got him up to average play, but far from the elite QB they hoped for when they took him 1st overall. They have eliminated his top-end potential.
Regarding the defenses of Indy and Jacksonville, my answer is nothing. My concern lies with what Locker will face from any defense- looks he is unprepared for, blitzes he cannot handle, the end result being he messes up some part of his fundamentals.

Virtually every other position is infinitely less cerebral than the QB position.

As I noted in my response to you....
None of this is totally damning, of course. It just can create an environment where instead of just coaching new concepts into the prospect, you’re also struggling to coach out the ever evolving bad habits out of the prospect.
3 games won’t break Locker’s career, but it also might not be the optimal environment for development. Since I’m not convinced we make the playoffs with or without him, I’m inclined to do whatever’s in the best interest of his progression first and foremost.
if he can't learn from his own mistakes, he will not succeed in the NFL
period. that’s a pre-requisite for this position in this league.

RISK – they are right and it does f- up his development somehow.

I can't speak for everyone else, but my logic has nothing to do with Vince Young
i also have yet to hear sound reasoning as to why Locker can’t learn by doing.
First things first. All prospects aren’t created equal, and there are no absolutes as it relates to the perfect way to develop a QB. We’ve seen examples of both working. IMO, the ones that have had long term success after starting as a rookie are typically the ones that were more advanced from an X’s and O’s standpoint.
Locker is not one of these guys. That’s not his fault. He played in an option offense in high school. Zone read offense for 2 years. And, finally, Sark’s offense with some West Coast concepts. While that was obviously more advanced than the others, it still was largely based on simple two man concepts and reads.
Locker’s making strides in his development, especially his footwork, but he’s still got a way to go from a mental aspect. Which leads us back to your question.
Throw a rookie in to the mix when they are still raw, and they no doubt will learn by doing, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll learn the correct thing to do. One example:
They’ll find that instead of standing in the pocket and delivering the ball, they can scramble for an easy 5-10 yards. And, for the time being, that will probably be successful. On the surface, there’s nothing wrong with that as long as it’s a positive play. But, realize that you’re ingraining patterns into the prospect. That success creates a positive reinforcement that, while good now, could have serious consequences long term when DC’s have enough tape on the QB.
What can end up happening is that even though the QB is learning that it’s optimal to stay in the pocket and get through progressions based on time in the film room, a pattern has already been created based on the positive reinforcement given in live situations. And, when that situation presents itself again, the mind isn’t going to the film room first, it’s going to look for real data, in real situations.
None of this is totally damning, of course. It just can create an environment where instead of just coaching new concepts into the prospect, you’re also struggling to coach out the ever evolving bad habits out of the prospect.

I vehemently disagree with this:
i also have yet to hear sound reasoning as to why Locker can’t learn by doing
There is a legitimate concern that he will develop bad habits that will take even more hard work to undo than it would be to let him learn them during the practice week alone. There is still plenty of things for Locker to improve on while sitting. Don’t make him write the test when he’s not fully prepared.

I think you missed this part, hal.
Nobody said Jake couldn’t learn while playing. What we’re saying is that, mentally (and as you know, alot of this game is mental), he’d be alot more prepared to play & break down defenses if he has some time to look at what’s going on…but from a perspective that allows him to analyze it and process it…rather than doing it while he’s running for his life on the field.

And, further more, I'm not sure I want to put him out there until we can bolster our O-Line (no offense Matty)...
A standout wherever the Georgia Bulldogs needed him, Cordy Glenn enters his senior campaign having started 36 games at left guard, right guard and left tackle. Scouts aren’t only impressed with his versatility, they’re left in awe at the athleticism demonstrated by the 6-5, 338 pound mountain of a man.
Glenn was a highly touted prep prospect who stepped into the starting lineup early after redshirting in 2007. While appearing in 13 games, he started ten times; seven games at left guard and three games on the right side. Glenn’s ability to play multiple positions was tested even more in 2009 as injuries to teammates forced the Bulldogs to move Glenn from right guard in the season-opener against Oklahoma State to left tackle for four games and back to left guard for the final eight contests. Glenn enjoyed his finest season to date as a junior, starting all 13 games at left guard. Glenn explored his NFL options following the 2010 season, but elected to return for his senior campaign with the hope of seeing time at left tackle and recognizing that the 2011 crop of offensive linemen was a solid group.
Glenn has practiced at left tackle in the spring and is expected to remain at the position throughout his senior campaign. At his size, he may struggle with the speed rushers of the SEC and, as such, may project better as a right tackle or back at guard in the NFL. The value placed on left tackles certainly makes his movement there a gamble worth watching. Should he struggle there, however, scouts have already seen what kind of a difference-maker he can be on the inside.

Non-Locker related topic of the day:
Anyone else worried about CJ’s long term production here? I assume we’ll upgrade the o-line in the offseason so hopefully we he can turn it around next year, but this season has been a lost cause. And even with all the blame the o-line is taking, there has to be at least some concern with CJ right? Not picking up the first down at the end of the game has nothing to do with them, and we’ve seen that hesitation and dancing all year.
2012: The year we clip the Hawk.
by WinnipegTitanFan13 on Dec 14, 2011 12:10 PM CST reply actions
I'm still hopeful a full offseason for him and upgraded O-line will help.
I think when the early struggles kicked in this year it just caused him to start forcing things and always look for the big play. I don’t know if he’ll ever have explosive speed again due to natural wear and tear, but performances like Carolina and Tampa Bay show he’s still got great speed and can get big runs.

for example that 4th and 1 pitch where he outran everyone to the corner for the 1st down.
not getting the 1st on that catch was just a combination of bad move by CJ and good play by the defender. the DB did a perfect form tackle on CJ who was looking to cut back even though he should have fell forward for the 1st.

Yes and no.
Here’s why:
Statistically RB’s experience a huge drop off in production around age 30. Sooner or later we all knew that CJ would burn out especially after how Fisher ran him the last two years. So, to some degree, seeing the hesitation and side-stepping worries me because it’s a sign that the end of CJ2K and the beginning of CJ500 is approaching.
HOWEVER, all of this being said and taken into account, hesitation is a mental problem, not necessarily a physical problem. It means that CJ is afraid of hitting the hole and getting hit and hurt and being a pansy. Frankly, when CJ goes after the hole, like he did the 2 games before last Sunday, he still has that spark. He is slower, but when he can man up and get his mind right he’ll be fine. After seeing him get Nate off the field last Sunday helped too. Obviously he’s a team player and if helping the team means getting over his mental blocks, then I know he will do it.

I don't think the play calling is doing him any favors either.
I don’t have any actual analysis of this, but it just seems like the types of running plays run this year are part of the problem.
Like, those stretch runs. You stretch the play out so that a hole will develop for the RB to run through, but the line isn’t good enough to run block for more than 1.5 sec at a time.
The stretch plays should be tossed from the playbook this year.
It seems like they never work.

I don’t see Scott back, so there’s one new guy. And I think Harris’ contract is up so there’s two. Pick up a FA for one guard spot, draft a guy for the other (or if they trust Velasco or Matthews to do it). Unfortunately due to Amano’s contract I think he sticks around. Roos and Stewart have been down this year, but I expect them to bounce back.

Well I think we can pick up one guard in the draft early.
Maybe a free agent somewhere else. But that still leaves one interior line spot up for grabs at the least. I think it’ll take two years to get the line back up to “great” play. If we’re aggressive in the draft or FA, maybe we can speed the process up.
Roos and Stewart will be around for a while, considering their overall play here has been excellent and their contracts. Both will be 30 next year. While that’s not a huge concern since its not like the RB drop-off at that age, it could be a situation where by the time we plug one hole in the dam (interior line), another could burst. At the least, they will both be on the downside of their careers.

There’s always a premium and perceived value on certain positions. Even if he’s considered the premier guard coming out, top ten teams just aren’t going to take an “unsexy” pick. They’ll go for glamour positions like QB, WR, RB, DE, CB or the only “sexy” o-line pick, a tackle.
Look at last year when Pouncey was considered the best interior lineman, took until the fourteenth pick for him to go.

Ya, DeCastro has been a popular pick to the Titans.
He would be an insta-starter pick, but I’m partial to a WR at that spot, until I learn more in the offseason about the ones coming out.

the only other WR we'd be in contention for is Michael Floyd
and he’s a Britt waiting to happen in terms of off field stuff. He already has problems in college.

That is a good point, but here is where draft strategy comes into play.
I want a WR and an OG. They would do wonders for this offense. I think if you can go WR in the first round and OG in the second (or FA), then you have two starters right there immediately (the WR, let’s say Jeffery, would be 3rd on the depth chart). If you reverse it, and go OG first, let’s say DeCastro, then WR in the second, I can’t see that WR being higher than 4th on the depth chart.
So one way I think you can land two starters, the other only one.

They will probably be around the same skill level, one with more experience.

I'd say go OG first then WR in the 2nd
the talent level for OG is much shallower than WR this year. Outside of DeCastro and Glenn, not much is left there. I’m slightly intrigued by Miami’s Tommy Streeter, 6’5 215 4.4-4.5 40

I don't know if this is to me or titansfan4ever but...
I think if you give someone with a base talent to Munchak and Matthews, they can make it work. What the issue is, in my opinion, is that we give them crappy sixth rounders to work with. They will get the most out of talented players who may not be the most polished, but they are not magicians. Can’t make something out of nothing.

Is there any reason not to move Amano back to guard
He played there before Bud (and every other owner) refused to deal with our probowl center due to his position as the union pres. Wouldn’t it make since to sign/draft a great center and shift Amano back over to where he played better?

I'm going to stick up for my man, C.ya J.
He’ll be just fine, trust me. He hasn’t forgot how to run. But you know that damn holdout…combined with that damn lockout…sure as hell didn’t help him at all!! No worries, my fellow MCM’ers…next year, you’ll see the old C.J. that we know and have all (well, most of us anyway) come to love. I have faith in no. 28…and don’t ask me how I know this for sure (but I do)….HE WILL NOT LET US DOWN!!

not worried
if he can’t do it after a full offseason and with some decent blocking, then i’ll be worried.
also, CJ has ALWAYS hesitated and “danced”. so did barry sanders. it’s what that type of back does. the difference in the past was he was able to “dance” his way into the open field.

Continuing the Locker discussion down here.
Before the topic turned to Luck, they discussed how Cam Newton, Andy Dalton and Christian Ponder have played pretty well as rookies. This can be taken one of two ways, of course, but I found it interesting nonetheless.
Rodgers said he’s impressed by what those guys have done, but that sitting for three years behind Brett Favre was fantastic for him.
…
"It allowed me to get my body in the kind of shape I wanted to get in. But more importantly to become an expert in our offense and to study defenses. If you talk to those guys you mentioned playing right now in a couple years, they’ll probably say, ‘Man, I didn’t really know anything or know what I was doing as a rookie.’ Because the game just really starts to open up to you after a couple offseasons. You do a lot of self-scout study and you study defense and then you can really I think become a very quick reactor. Those guys getting the experience early, they’ll be able to see a lot of looks. You really start to get that comfort level the more looks you see and the more time you study in the offseason."
