Time and Patience
The Tennessee Titans have four wins, and four losses. They are mediocre, they are bad. Their younger players are inconsistent, and their veterans are playing bad. Their front office came up with a complete free agency bust in Barrett Ruud, resulting in their linebacking core being weak as ever. Their expensive superstar running back has sputtered and is struggling. Their defensive line is either underachieving or not as good as they appeared to be early in the season. These are your NFL Tennessee Titans in 2011.
Now, here is how our season has gone so far.
2011 Titans Season:
Week 1, @ Jaguars (2-6):
Lost 14-16
Excuse for loss: Offense out of sync for 3 quarters.
Week 2, Ravens (6-2):
Won 26-13
Reason for win: Kenny Britt was awesome. (next week, is out for the year.)
Week 3, Broncos (3-5)
Won 17-14
Reason for win: Defense came up big with some timely INTs.
Week 5, @ Browns (3-5)
Won 31-13
Reason for win: The Browns suck.
Week 6, @ Steelers (6-3)
Lost 38-17
Excuse for loss: The Steelers don't suck, we were on the road, and we couldn't do anything right.
Week 7, Texans (6-3)
Lost 41-7
Excuse for loss: Our offense was terrible, and our defense was terrible.
Week 8, Colts (0-9)
Won 27-10
Reason for win: Winless team.
Week 9, Bengals (6-2)
Lost 24-17
Excuse for loss: Offense did not show up for the second half.
Now that all of that is out of the way, let me point out something that I think is getting lost in everything else.
After Kenny Britt went down in the Broncos game, we've subsequently gone 3-3, only winning games against mediocre offenses, and losing games against actual NFL offenses.
Since KB went out, the most our offense has scored is 17 points. In all of our wins, we had to hold the opposing offense to under 17 points.
(Footnote: We scored more than 17 points against the Browns, actually. But they're the Browns.)
Unfortunately, our defense is nowhere good enough to consistently hold an NFL offense to under 17 points. We don't have the type of defense to keep us in games against really good offenses when our own offense isn't scoring. This is not your 2008 Titans defense.
Now, realistically, looking at the rest of the schedule... We don't face another mediocre offense until Week 16. That's 6 games from now. Our Titans could very well be 4-10 by then.
We need to do something to either fix our defense or improve our offensive scoring, because we're entering a 6-game stretch that; if we don't; we will lose every game played.
The optimist in me is screaming at me to shut up, but it is what it is.
Now, to satisfy my inner optimist and piss off the part of me that wants instant results, let's talk about the future.
We came into this season knowing this was a rebuilding year, and I truly believe that if CJ had shown up earlier and Kenny Britt stayed healthy, we would be sitting at 6-2 right now despite the rebuild. But unfortunately, things did not go that well.
The 2012 Titans season? Hopefully with another good draft class, we can keep filling up the holes that are visibly showing themselves this season. Not to mention, since we will have on off-season, one of two things will go much more smoothly: the eventual transition to Jake Locker, or the second year of the Hasselbeck era.
Kenny Britt should be rehabbed and back to play on opening day, with a little help from Donnie Avery, too, because he suffered the same injury KB has years ago and had to rehab back to playing football too. This was the real reason for signing him, and I think it was a good move that the front office should have received more praise for.
So, in 2012, we should have:
1. Tenured Jake Locker/More situated Matt Hasselbeck
2. The real CJ2K for a full season
3. A healthy Kenny Britt
And we could hopefully have:
1. Another good draft class to jam up holes in our defense.
2. A season without Barrett Ruud as a Titans linebacker.
3. A team down with its new offensive and defensive scheme.
I don't know about you, but I already look forward to 2012, because it looks like a really really good situation for the Titans. Hopefully the world doesn't end in December next year, or the universe really truly does hate us.
So, keep these two thoughts with you as we enter the toughest stretch of the season with a meh record and a mediocre team. Hold onto them like a saving grace, because they just might keep you from having a seemingly eternal bout of depression as our team continues to struggle.
2011 is a rebuilding year.
2012 is our year.
No matter what happens this year, we will have a better and more fluent team in a better situation to erase the bad memories of 2011. It'll feel like hell getting there, but don't worry.
We will get there.
It's just a matter of time and patience.
(Like you probably had to have both of, reading this entire post.)

2012 will remain a rebuilding year
Avery has yet to show up and WRs have a hard time coming back to 100% after the injury Britt sustained. I think next year will be a down year with a healthy Britt and in 2013 he should break out again. Hass will be the QB in 2012 with Locker taking over in 2013.

2012 will be a tough year again. Just by looking at the Oppents.
NFC North- @Packers & Vikes and home vs Bears & Lions
AFC East- @Pats & Jets and home vs Phins & Bills.
Not to mention we are going to either be playing the Ravens or Steelers from the North again and then either the Raiders or Chargers.
May God have Mercy on the AFC South next year.

Time to take the long view
We have too many holes to address in one draft and could struggle to find cap room to go large in free agency. We need 1st or 2nd round level talent at DE, LB. S. WR, C, G and maybe TE. Best case scenario is two perfect drafts and a bit of larceny in FA. The inner optimist says that’s achievable if this year’s draft is any indicator.
Next year the Colts will have Manning and/ or Luck and the Texans (assuming they make the playoffs this year which looks likely) will have the monkey off their back and therefore could be less prone to choking so 2012 will be tough. Even if we get in a deep run is very doubtful.
By 2013 Locker should be coming into his own and with good talent around him and a strong D we could go very deep.
Too soon to be talking about a Superbowl? Ummm... Ok
One thing I'm worried about.
I’m not really too knowledgeable on injuries, but that injury to Britt, is it going to hurt his speed and cuts or whatever? How’s it usually hurt receivers?
From what I've read... as long as Britt rehabs properly, he should be fine in the long-term. (which Avery was signed to help him do)
However, if he doesn’t allow it to heal fully or doesn’t properly rehab it, then it’ll affect his jumping, cuts, mobility, etc, and heighten the risk for re-injury.
Best-case, 2012 Britt and onward is the same Kenny Britt we know and love.
Worst-case, Britt screws up his healing process with impatience or negligence, and we never see the same receiver again.

If so why are we not utilizing him more?

2013 MIGHT be our year
Lets’s face it, in your plan you are putting a lot of expectation on next years rookie class. Also next year we do have a very difficult schedule.
Our defence is weak everywhere not just at linebacker like we all seem to think. The d-line makes good plays but is far too inconsistent. We get run on far too often to claim otherwise. The linebackers are obviously not great but on PFF this week they pointed out that the Titans didn’t miss a single tackle on defence. So clearly they aren’t rubbish just not talented enough, or maybe not fast enough they do seem slow. Our safeties are just poor. I’d be happy if Griffin was the worst the player in the secondary.
On offence again. The line needs work, the receivers need upgrading and we need to find a way to run the ball. I personally would like to see us go with a split back system like we had with Lendale and CJ. Simply because it was the most effective ground game i can remember us having. I know CJ got 2000 yards the next year but in the Lendale/CJ year we could rely on the run game to win us games on its own. The next season we couldn’t.
I’m a perennial pessimist so I’m always surprised when things go well. But it does seem that people are putting a lot of stock into how much we can get out rookies next year.
someone throw a shoe at me for even thinking this...
but i get the worst vibe about KB coming back next year and staying healthy. I dont know if i’m the only one thinking that, so forgive me if I am. I have no scientific proof whatsoever to explain this.

Anyone coming off an ACL injury is suspect
That’s why we need to get some other WR’s that know how to catch the ball, in case of things like this …

Looking at projected 2013 opponents
I am salivating at these prospects.
Home opponents: Colts, Texans, Jaguars, Chiefs, Chargers, 49ers, Seahawks, AFC East same place finisher (so probably Dolphins or Bills)
Analysis: If the Colts are Manning-less, and assuming the curse of WeCan’tBeatSanDiego will end soon, all these games are extremely winnable.
Road opponents: Colts, Texans, Jaguars, Broncos, Raiders, Cardinals, Rams, AFC North same place finisher (Browns, more than likely)
Analysis: Outside of the long west coast trips, every one of these games is winnable.
If Locker’s first starting season is this year, and he’s as good as we hope he’ll be, DAMN, this is a soft schedule for us. I voted 2013 in the first place, but that was before I saw this schedule. 2012 is brutal, but it we play these opponents in 2013, we could seriously make some noise.

God I hope this is our 2013 schedule. AFC West and NFC West? Plus probably the worst teams out of the AFC East and AFC North?
I see 12-4. Maybe I’m just drinking too much anti-freeze two-tone blue kool-aid.

That’d be damn interesting

Well, I can't predict the future, but one thing I know for sure...
We need to do something to either fix our defense or improve our offensive scoring, because we’re entering a 6-game stretch that; if we don’t; we will lose every game played.
Soooo, what’s the fix? I believe it’s the pass rush. If we fix that, everything else should fall into place. We’ve GOT to get more pressure on QBs, and I don’t care how many guys it takes or what kind of blitzes are needed to accomplish this….it HAS to be done!!
