It's been quite the year for Mike Otto: After four years of being a reserve for one of the healthiest tackle tandems in the NFL, he finally got his first start as an offensive lineman (his only other previous start was as a third tackle on the first play of a game a few years ago), and he lined up at TE for the first time in his career filling in for Craig Stevens.
Munchak has fielded his fair share of questions about the Texans' recent misfortune, but he's focusing on what his team is doing right now.
Jim Wyatt reports that David Stewart will return to practice this week, Jared Cook doesn't have any lingering effects from the concussion he sustained on Sunday, Ruud will take longer to recover and Tommie Campbell is questionable for this weekend. The team is also saying that Hasselbeck's injury didn't get any worse on Sunday, which is a relief to me.
Chris Johnson was tabbed as one of PK's Offensive Players of the Week.
Audibles at the Line was a good read as always.
The Texans are working out Jeff Garcia (for the second week in a row) and Jake Delholme now that the need another QB, but Kubiak is saying that no matter who they sign T.J Yates is going to get his chance as the starter this Sunday. That's great timing for our interests, as the Texans will face their toughest opponents left on the schedule in the Falcon at home and the Bengals on the road.

Basically, though we do have a wild card shot at 10-6 assuming we lose to the Saints and win the others.

I was just about the say the same thing.
I honestly think the division title is too far out of reach now, given Houston’s lead and their remaining sked. But 10-6 gets us a wildcard. Even at 9-7 we’d have an outside chance. We’d probably end up in a tie for the wildcard spots but lose it on tiebreakers.

Best case scenario here, we pull the upset against the Saints and win out.
Houston loses to the Falcons and the Bengals, making week 17 the game for the division. We still have a shot, however very slim, to win the division.

This is a peculiar move.
He turned down an extension earlier this year. He takes a lot of risks in the draft, especially in the first round, and loves the small school guys in the mid rounds. His track record is so-so.

The Jaguars replace Blaine Gabbert after he goes 13-of-29 and throws a pick. Not since David Carr have I seen a quarterback so flinchy when it comes to pressure that hasn’t even arrived yet, and Gabbert doesn’t have the excuse of sack-record trauma.
He has shown virtually zero improvement. At what point do you admit that your first-round quarterback is a complete and utter bust? Do you sign someone in the offseason to give him more development time? Do you take your chances with (what looks like) a high pick on Matt Barkley or Landry Jones?

As Ron pointed out above, the resigning of Gene Smith pretty much ensures they stick with Gabbert.
He was Smith’s guy the whole time, and I doubt he admits his mistake so early.
If I were in charge, I’d be taking a second QB in the first round and letting them battle it out.

It's more doable with the restructuring of rookie deals.
Fanbase wouldn’t be happy, but Gene Smith hasn’t exactly drafted based on popular opinion. Still, he chose Gabbert so he will in all likelihood stick with him.

That would be interesting to see. To me, it’s obviously a pretty dang important position. If you suck for several years and a row, stocking them up and trying out several seems pretty defensible. If you get two good ones, hey, trade and get some picks back.
Probably the reason teams don’t do this is because it makes them look like they don’t know jack about who will be successful and who won’t in the NFL if they do it.

Given what we know:
QBs are the most valuable position
QBs are the hardest to find
It is easily manageable to fit two first round QBs under the cap
I really do think some of these teams should consider it. It hasn’t been done in the past because you couldn’t afford to draft JaMarcus Russell and then Sam Bradford and fit them all under the cap. Now, its do-able.

I think Gabbert will do fine if they stick with him, taking another 1st round QB will destroy both QBs development
which since it’s the Jags, I am ok with.
But they are starting to pull an Alex Smith on Gabbert, there is no stability in the franchise way too early into his development.

Seriously, you can chalk up this year to being a rookie and lack of weapons, but coming out of college he had done nothing to warrant the hype except be 6’5. They threw him in too early and I think it’s going to cost them big time.

Let’s say they take a QB. Your options are then:
-Gabbert plays, develops into starter.
-Gabbert plays, does poorly, you’ve sat your other QB for a year, he’s ready to go, plays well.
-You’ve guessed wrong on both and they both suck, at which point you’re losing your job anyways.

This is the only reason I could agree with this, because in terms of money it would not be as a big impact on the team…
but you would be missing out on other potential franchise changing talent out there as well (this of course is assuming I am right and having 2 back-to-back first round QBs destroys both of their development)

Yup.
In years where we’ve drafted a QB, I/we spent a lot of time looking at all the QBs. And there’s that pull to “be right.” Though I will continuously point out that I said Dalton had a lower bust factor than Gabbert.

Cautiously optimistic.
I think its evident to everyone why we drafted him. He just inspires confidence. I want to see him succeed, not only for us as Titans fans but because I want to see people like him succeed. His development is much farther along than I thought it would be, that’s a great sign. I still have some doubts, particularly with his accuracy because I think it’ll take more time, but if there’s anyone that can overcome that obstacle, its Locker.

I think he's made strides in accuracy and delivery, no doubt.
And I think if we can keep him on the bench for five more games I’ll be the happiest guy here. However, his accuracy is still a work in progress. I don’t buy the “Palmer promised to fix his accuracy, and he did it in mere months” line of thinking. It may have improved, but it has a long way to go, considering where it started.

I completely agree with this. I don’t want to see him start at all for the rest of the year
It may have improved, but it has a long way to go, considering where it started.
For right now, improvements are what I want to see, not Palmer saying “It’s Fixed!” He is still a work in progress and that is just what it is, in progress.

He's also got a legit TE, and a decent WR in Simpson (who has a great vertical apparently...ha).

The Colts have soooo many problems on both sides of the ball, no QB other then Pey Pey will be able to fix them.
Giving them the ability to retool the majority of their problems with multi-early round picks, plus having a contending first overall pick QB would not be good. At all.

I don't think he'll be Peyton, Peyton was a computer behind center.
But I think Luck is easily the best QB of this draft, far and away better than Barkley. He’s been compared to Elway and Peyton as prospects. I see why you wouldn’t want them to have more picks, but honestly I don’t really care if they get an extra DE, LB and WR out of a trade down. They won’t have the same impact on the W total as Luck will.

You can see what a rookie QB can do with a decent team around him
in Andy Dalton. Give Luck a decent team and shit will get ugly for the rest of the division.
Look at our posting above;
Dalton stepped into a great situation for a rookie QB to succeed. Above average running back, decent o-line, Top 5 defense, best receiver in the draft (who bails him out consistently) the prior years top TE in the draft.
Dalton’s transition has been pretty easy for him as apposed to what Luck would be walking into.

We know the Colts haven’t been that great at drafting first round players. However, there has not been a prospect like Luck since 1999.
We have seen what can be done when you have a good QB even if he’s not surrounded by a lot of talent. With that in mind, I want the Colts to pass on the more guaranteed prospect (ie. less likely to bust) in favour of some other QB + other picks, since their draft record indicates its unlikely they’ll stumble upon three or four great players with those picks.

There are still good players on the Colts offense
but their O-line is horrible… so horrible, Pey Pey masked that for a long time. I think whatever QB steps in there will not be able to replicate what Pey does to mask the O-lines faults and will not be anywhere near as effective.

I really wish Scott’s farewell episode had been the series finale as it would’ve been perfect, could’ve shown Andy getting the job to say that Scranton would go on, but also show growth for Michael in leaving the job he loved so much.
As it is I anticipate one more year of mediocre shows at best before fading out, maybe with a Michael-Holly wedding as the final episode ever. Though if they wanted to go dark they could end it with the office finally being shut down due to the economy.

I think its been a really rough transition, what with Ferrell, then all the guest stars, now with Robert California in charge.
I’m holding out hope that they’ll turn it around. Andy’s always been hilarious, they just need to figure out what to do with all these actors. As it is I find it kind of weird having Andy in charge and then California (seriously what kind of name is that?) being the boss.

Yeah, they can't decide whether to make California just all-out zen and weird or sane.
Can’t have it both ways. Also, I feel like they’re just rehashing a bunch of storylines from past seasons and just plugging Andy in for Michael, and that just doesn’t work. I like Andy too, but he’s a completely different type of person that Michael. I really think they need a “bad guy” per se that can serve as an adversary to Andy, who is basically a good guy who just wants everyone to like him.

Houston still has a good defense, AJ and some tight ends…but you know defenses are going to key on the run game and I just don’t see a rookie being able to make the plays in the passing game to get them wins against solid teams.

I know this is weird to say but I liked TJ Yates coming out of college.
Thought that was a pretty good pick by Houston. I don’t think he’ll play well at all, but all he has to do is hand the ball off and they can get the division title.

which is pretty accurate, I think. There are some weak spots, but I think they have a really good QB situation, and a fair number of other strong players and good role players. Just a few things need attention. The Colts and Jags have a lot more to deal with than we will this offseason.

I think Nate is clearly playing better
but Kenny is injury prone. He’s a big guy, he goes up for stuff. I’ve always thought the nifty little route-runners tend to be less injury prone. I don’t care where they get one, I just think after Nate and Britt our capability at WR drops off to far, especially since we’re a team without an elite TE. We need better depth next year.
Imagine if we hadn't lost Britt earlier in the year.
We could easily have more wins.
