Titans 23 Buccaneers 17: Grading the Defense

Photo

The run defense struggled yesterday. They allowed LeGarrette Blount to rush for 103 yards on 20 carries. He was hurdling and running over people a lot of the day. The only real redeeming fact for the defense was that they forced Blount to put the ball on the ground twice and recovered both of them.

Grade: C

The pass defense was excellent. Again, they were helped out by the fact that the weather was terrible, but they held Josh Freeman to 199 yards passing. That is a solid effort in any weather.

It is no coincidence that the pass defense is better with Colin McCarthy on the field. He had the first interception by a Titan linebacker since Keith Bulluck (OK, not really), but he is making plays out there. That is what the linebacker corps has desperately been missing the last few years.

Dave Ball also had his one game he has every year where he is dominant. He forced two sacks and recovered a fumble.

Grade: A

I have no words to describe the feeling when McCarthy intercepted that ball.

one of the last drives of the game, the opposing QB (as always) goes to their TE in the middle of the field because he knows the titans have no clue how to defend these plays..
and there comes McCarthy saving the day!!
just priceless!

Ball also forced the fumble he recovered

and fun fact : McCarthy forced a fumble in his first start. Tulluch never forced a fumble while he was here.

That’s one related to the falcons game.

I'd be ok with re-signing him to a modest deal.

He’s a good rotational guy, won’t ever be a starter and shouldn’t be, but can come in on passing plays and be effective. And if we get one outstanding game a year from him like yesterday, it’s worth it.

We got after Freeman really well yesterday.

I think that’s such an underrated aspect of this team. It seems like when we get after the QB, our defense plays much better, and when we don’t, we get torched. That seems obvious now that I’ve typed it out, but I think consistent production from the D line going forward is going to be huge in determining how many more games we win.

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

Weather definitely played a factor.

Still no excuse for the fumbles by Ringer and CJ, but slippery ball definitely factored in. Hasselbeck’s pick six is on him, no idea what he saw there. I can’t remember the other one precisely but I believe it was a fourth-down INT that essentially did no harm.

I agree

We were doing our damn near best to shoot ourselves in the foot but still managed to pull out the W because we forced more mistakes than we created. Funny how something so elementary (i.e. holding onto the ball) can determine the outcome of a game. Overall, it was an important win that may determine our future when the postseason arrives, and I’m glad we won it.

McCarthy made plays, period. He is still a rookie and gets caught out of position in run defense, but he can actually cover occasionally unlike Ruud.

I think that whoever has become a replacement on our defense

Is more a result of being a better playmaker than their counterparts, something this defense has drastically lacked for quite some time. They may not be the best long term solution in every case (that has yet to be seen), but McCarthy, Babineaux, Klug, et al. are finding ways to get it done even amidst their mistakes or rookie shortcomings.

And has upside and room to grow.

I fully expect rookie mistakes from him, and in fact saw him out of position or duped on some cutbacks in the run game yesterday. However, listening to his post-game interview I loved what I heard from him in regards to the INT, paraphrasing here:

“I recognized that play from watching tape and knew they would be looking for the tight end.”

That alone makes me excited and wanting him to start. He recognized the formation and where the ball would be going, and was there to make the play. I think he was shocked he had the ball quite honestly but recognizing the formation and being in the right place for coverage is huge.

^ this

I don’t see a single advantage to starting Ruud over McCarthy now. Ruud’s physical abilities are obviously limited and if he was some genius defense leader on the field he would have gotten more than a 1 year deal to begin with.

If we can continue to get a high level of play from McCarthy I feel like we just need one really good move at LB in the offseason to get the position shored up for a while. That’ll also allow us to draft a DB & WR or Olineman in the first two rounds.
