Tennessee Titans Daily Links: Ruud As Hell Edition
Wyatt looks at why Barret Ruud is getting his starting MLB spot back, despite being seriously outplayed by Colin McCarthy last week. Jimmy and I addressed this at length at the top of MCM Radio last night, so go take a listen to hear our take on what Gray and Munchak are probably thinking.
Ruud may be getting his starting spot handed back to him, but that's not the case at the safety position. Jordan Babineaux will be playing with the first group, and Chris Hope will rotate in for certain packages.
Upon hearing the news, Hope was very diplomatic:
"Timing is everything," Hope said. "A year ago or two years ago, we wouldn't have had a [Babineaux] on the team to do that. So I would have been forced back into action a lot earlier. ... It's amazing how God works."
Shocking news: the Titans are likely to get scorched by an opponent's TE. Despite being 15 years into his career, Tony Gonzalez is second in receptions for the Falcons. He's a vital part of their passing game, and that could spell big trouble for this defense for reasons that are pretty obvious to everyone here.
Alterraun Verner is still turning heads, and he makes Matt WIlliamson's list of 5 up and coming corners.
Is this the week Donnie Avery finally makes an impact?
Ray Edwards was Atlanta's big FA signing last offseason, and so far it's been a miserable failure and a big part of the reason the Falcons have a meager 15 sacks.
SB Nation's Alexander Shirkey reviews the Falcons' choice to trade up to get Julio Jones.
Pacman Jones' upcoming trial on misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest has been postponed until after the regular season is over.
It's starting to look more and more like Peyton Manning may be on the way out of Indy.
If anyone still thinks Tim Tebow can be a successful QB in the NFL, they're crazy. He's a leader, and he has guts, but he's going to have no answer once teams adjust to that gimmicky offense. I'm not taking anything away from that final drive, but it was only 'amazing' because everything he'd done before it was laughably putrid. Von Miller, on the other hand, is a complete beast.

If defenses didnt try to get into the backfield, Tebow would have to rely on his arm which we all is pathetic.

Well he certainly wasn't pathetic last night.
His passes were sharp & crisp…and very accurate. Were he is so dangerous, though, is with his legs. I guess A-Dub was wrong about Tebow. He has this uncanny knack of WINNING!! Sanchez on the other hand…not so much. I think last night’s game was one of the worst I’ve seen him play yet.

I've long thought Sanchez overrated.
But come on, 9/20 passing wins the game?! Give coordinators a chance to really see this on film, you may see something like what we did to Carolina where we shut down the offense by confusing Newton. Start stacking the box to stop the run, use zone coverage to confuse Tebow.

I've been down on Sanchez since that draft.
Playing in NYC gets him a lot of press, but he’s in the middle tier of game-managing QBs right now.

The “[insert QB] just wins!!!” argument flies just about everywhere except at MCM.
Teams often have short term success with the option (the wildcat in Miami is a great example), but eventually a QB has to throw to win.
And those miracle come back drives to win the game are going to start coming fewer and farther between if he can’t start doing something in the first 3 quarters.

A mixture of thoughts on today's Links:
- If I were the Polians, I’d take Luck and trade Manning for whatever I could get. Someone will pony up a pick for him.
- I’ve always suspected that Gray loved Ruud’s leadership, and that’s what was giving him the starting job. What surprises me is how much of a leader McCarthy was last game, which means now I have no idea why Ruud is still starting. They’re both leaders, one played better than the other. Regardless, I think this is Ruud’s last chance. Either he plays well and we beat Atlanta, or he plays poorly, we lose and our season is on life support. At that point, its time to go with youth.
- Donnie Avery is a terrible route runner, we knew that before he signed. But giving him 10-15 deep routes a game on passing plays, even if he’s only targeted a few times, would help the offense. Gotta keep the deep threat alive, and him blazing down field should open things up for Hands and Williams.
- I think Tim Tebow can be a good NFL QB. He needs more time to develop, but I do think an innovative OC could craft a solid offense around him.
- One step farther: Titans fans should be rooting for Tebow to succeed. Statistically, the odds of his success are unlikely…very similar to our backup QB’s right now. Both did mediocre on the Wonderlic, both have major accuracy issues, both are great leaders. Tebow has a major throwing motion issue that Locker doesn’t, but they actually reminded me of each other when I looked at them in the draft. One was thought of as a FB, the other a safety. The Broncos, one way or another, are performing an experiment we can watch. We’ll learn from their failure or success.

Locker's resemblance to Tebow ends at their physical skillset.
Locker is light years ahead of Tebow in accuracy, velocity, and quick release. Moreover, I can’t see a scenario where we ask Locker to execute power runs into the teeth of the defense.
I like what I see in Tebow, though. If he can get a little more accurate, he’ll be a lot of fun to watch in the coming years. He presents an entirely different mismatch than the Vicks/Youngs of the world in that he can run designed inside runs effectively. As noted last night, you can run with 10 blockers as opposed to the traditional 9 blockers. That’s a distinct advantage.
The physical comparison is quite apt. That's what I'm getting at.
Certainly Locker’s throwing motions and velocity are much, much better. Tebow, in college had better accuracy, but is clearly not at that level in the pro’s. Locker had mediocre accuracy in college, we’ll see how it fairs in the NFL.
I wouldn’t run Locker up the middle, but I do think we could implement some option plays and designed runs if we’re forced to play him early.

He provides hope at QB, a unique skill set and a great attitude.
That’s why he’s such an easy guy to support. You just want to see someone like that succeed. If he continues to work on his accuracy, he’s going to be an absolute star in this league.

Tebow wasn't accurate in college
he just had tons of wide open receivers, and easy swing passes. That offense, and the speed they had at WR and TE, were miles ahead of the competition. That’s never going to be the case in the NFL.
Also, Locker has an NFL wind-up and release. Tebow has the longest, slowest throwing motion I’ve ever seen. He spent his entire senior year trying to fix it with no noticeable improvements. It’s a recipe for disaster.

I'm not convinced he will ever fix it, at this point.
He’s been working on it for years, and is supposedly one of the hardest working guys you’ll ever meet. It seems like if he could fix it, it would be fixed by now.
I think when this option offense stops working, it’s all going to catch up to him.

Locker was hard to gauge coming out of college
He was playing with some mediocre players on that offense. I remember watching the Washington/USC game and thinking, “man that was some really good ball placement but that guy has hands like Justin Gage.” I never thought Locker had horrendous mechanics, I thought that he would need to be coached up; but not to the extent that Tebow had to be coached up out of college. Tebow would, like SuperHorn and AW said, miss wide open receivers and the talent on that Florida team was lightyears ahead of what they had on Washington. Plus Tebow’s footwork, mechanics, throwing motion, and progressions were lightyears behind what Locker’s were coming out of college.

not buying the Locker Tebow comparison
Locker’s ceiling ends at the Steve Young and Steve McNair level. I don’t know how to classify Tebow as a QB and can he develop bc this offense while being effective because of its uniquness and Tebow’s moxie, isn’t a long term solution. No team can afford to risk their team’s biggest financial output by putting their QB in harms way play after play after play. Tebow isn’t made of glass like Vick or VY, but it is a statistical certainly that playing like he does will get him hurt.

I think Tebow's build will let him play this way for a bit.
He’s taken tons of hits in college playing this way. Watching him last night he doesn’t look near as vulnerable as Vick or Vince; running like a ‘fullback’ somewhat helps him in that way.

McNair eventually took so many hits
and he was running a pro style offense. That’s the real problem with this offense and I watched the game last night and saw Bart Scott clock Tebow while he was carrying out a fake. Not legal if he’s throwing, but perfectly legal in the option system.

Come on now, Winny.
Without playing a lot of meaningful football this season, Locker is by FAR the better QB compared to Tebow. Statisically Tebow outdid him in college, sure, but that’s where we can start looking at talent around them. Plus Tebow was one of the most gifted athletes out on the field and that can get you a long ways in the college game.
When Locker does finally take over, I don’t see us doing any “experimental” stuff because Locker is closer to a pro passer who just needs footwork and accuracy improvement (no small matters, but much less of a fundamental issue compared to throwing motion). I could see us doing more rollouts and bootlegs to take advantage of his mobility, but nothing like what Denver is doing with Tebow…which I don’t see lasting much longer.

I will agree with you on Ruud/McCarthy, though.
I saw what looked like a lot of leadership and intensity out of McCarthy last Sunday. Granted, we’re all getting overhyped off of one start, but all other things being equal (leadership, etc.) why not go with the younger guy who has shown flashes of being a playmaker? Maybe not a playmaker like Ayers could be, but a good MLB the likes we haven’t seen here in a while.

Locker is definitely more polished than Tebow.
I don’t dispute that, I should have been more clear. I would love to see some creative designs, even some college stuff like options as I said above, with Locker in. He’s got a really unique skill set- more comparable to Young than Tebow, but all those guys would have a better chance at success if we didn’t restrain them to a “pro” playbook. I absolutely want Locker to develop into a pocket passer, but I think as he develops, using his mobility a lot would help. I know very little about the offense he ran in high school and college (though if you Google search Wing T playbook you get a lot of interesting stuff) but I think placing him in that comfort zone early would be beneficial.
How this relates back to Tebow is this: The goal right now for Denver should be to win games and make do with the skill set Tebow has currently. They should use it to buy them some time to develop Tebow more as a passer, at which point (if he ever reaches it) should he then be used in a more typical pro passer.

Ok, gotcha.
I’m just fearful that IF it came to a point where Locker was starting and we were just letting him do his thing (like Denver is doing with Tebow), it will lead to that dreaded old habits that we are all fearful of happening with Locker. Not to say I want him to be forced into a box where he struggles trying to be something he’s not, but I also don’t want them just saying, “Go do your thing Jake, doesn’t matter if your footwork and accuracy are not up to par.”
I could handle some sort of early-McNair thing where his mobility is utilized a lot more, however. Ideally Locker becomes Rodgers-like where he can use his mobility to throw the ball downfield and eventually turn into a dominate pocket passer.

I don't think I've been more excited for a Sunday night game this year.
Is it a home game for Philly?

Good thing
If Vunce thought Nashville was a tough crowd, the Philly crowd will boo him so much that he might disappear for a day after the game and have his mom call the coach worried that her son is about to kill himself. Reid might even have to call the police to find him….. Naw that’s too crazy to ever happen.

He can disguise himself as Santa and escape...
No wait that doesn’t work in Philly either. I know he should run to Marvin Harrison’s carwash. Marvin has an a large enough arsenal to protect VY.

Vince may struggle Sunday just based on struggles in learning Reid's offense.
That said, I think you could see a Vick-like resurgence of his career in Philly over the next couple of years if Vick gets injured. Philly is mistakenly lumped in with the West Coast crowd given that Reid is a WC disciple. While there are some WC concepts, the offense lives and dies with the deep ball…Young’s strong point.
Prediction: DeSean Jackson catches at least one deep bomb on Sunday.
I've often wondered if he could repair his career in Philly.
There are two things holding him back right now. He’s struggled with injuries and already has a lengthy history of not fully understanding the playbook, and secondly, I don’t think he’ll be in Philly next year.
I would look at the Leinart situation. After two years in Houston I think Leinart is ready to contribute to that team, but it took those learning years, particularly under a QB guy like Kubiak, to make that step (assuming he does in fact make that leap in two weeks). Reid could have the same effect on Vince, but I don’t think he’s had enough time to make that jump, nor do I think he’s mentally and emotionally ready for it yet.

This right here is why I don't think he's ready
nor do I think he’s mentally and emotionally ready for it yet.
He may play well, he may not. He’s shown that he has the talent to play well in a game but hasn’t done it long enough over the length of a season just because of his mental and emotional fragility

Well he's got six games to tease Philly fans.
In true Vince fashion it wouldn’t shock me to see him play well this week, have Philly fans start to support him, scream for him to play late in the season, and then break their hearts with his poor play later.

Vince Young isn't emotionally ready to wipe his own ass
never mind general an NFL franchise. He’ll probably succeed in bursts because he has the skills to do well, but we all know how it’s going to end.

youre right, which is why i dont hate him the way the rest do
i went through vince carter in toronto. you guys say he quit on the team, while his numbers were at a career high. when carter quit on the team his numbers were embarassingly low and skyrocketed once he was traded. you say he was soft and milked injuries, when i saw him fight to get back in against washington. carter would be out for a month with a papercut. carter would laugh at boos, laugh at losses, and go to carolina the same day as a game 7. young brokedown he was so emotionally invested.
so while i know exactly how you all feel, and feel the exact same hate towards carter (delightfully hoping for his faiure every stop of his career), i dont feel the same way for young cause i saw a troubled kid who always gave his best on the actual field. i suppose its not hating stalin cause i lived through hitler.

I hung on to the Giants D in FF just in case he started.
Now I know which D I’ll be starting come Sunday. Lol
The Force is with you, young SkyLocker, but you are not a Jedi... yet!
VY starting against the Giants
Brings me memories of that game in 2006 agains the Giants. Vince scored 3 tds and helped us make one of the greatest 4th quarter comebacks i´ve seen.
If only that vince young could have stayed and not the mentally retarded we got to know during his stay with the team.

that's where Tebow = Young
They both can pull winz out of their butts, though borrowing from August I’m guessing that Tebow wipes his own, after some prayer of course.

Anybody else wonder why the media makes such a big deal about Tebow's religion and religious activities?
I realize he puts it on full display, but there are a TON of other players that take a knee after a TD or pray before and after games. Yet when Tebow does it I have to watch it on rerun for two hours straight. I don’t get it.

I think it's cause he's overtly open about it.
Not bashing the guy and you are correct, lots of players take a knee or thank God in interviews. Tebow just seems to wear it on his sleeve and make it a HUGE part of who he is. Naturally this is unheard of for a field where guys have tattoos up and down their arms, stay out late speeding in the big-rimmed cars, and are spotted in VIP sections at nightclubs.
His “wholesomeness” and religion being a huge part of his personality I think is what causes the media furor

Some of it Tebow brings one himself.
But I find a lot of it seems to be the media bringing it on him. Kneeling, praying, whatever, etc. can be seen in a lot of players. But last night, it seemed NFLN threw several questions at him surrounding his beliefs. Heck at one point Deion asked him if he was hated because of his religion (which does seem to be the case, yet another thing I don’t understand).
Tebow probably could not be more hated if he gave the middle finger to the crowd after every TD.

Example No.2
NFLN flashes to Tebow praying at center field after the game with other players. I get that he’s the ‘star’ so they focus on him, but there a lot of other players in that circle, none of which have to field questions about their activities.

Because he is the poster-boy for Christians in the NFL
as he was for people watching him at Florida. He’s easily marketable and extremely likeable
For some reason you want this dude to succeed… I think it’s because he shows a passion for the game that kinda has been lost over the years, regardless if he is doing it for God or for Football or for himself, he’s got the fire you want to see.

That's part of what drives me crazy about the attention paid him.
There are plenty of other devout, open Christians in the NFL, but for whatever reason, no one cares about them.
He got “famous” for it at Florida for going on a mission trip type thing and saying that he was saving himself for marriage, despite being the QB at a big time college.
Of course, Tebow isn’t the only college player to do these sorts of things, he’s just the only one that everyone knows about, for whatever reason.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"
