Biggest need(s) in 2012 Draft

I just took a look at our team for the 2012 season, and our biggest need isn't LB, WR, or Safety, it is actually DE. Our only DE's under contract for 2012 are Derrick Morgan and Malcolm Sheppard. I am not a huge Shep fan, and I am not too high on the team resigning Dave Ball or William Hayes. I would rather they resign Jason Jones, and use the number 1 draft pick to get a guy like Courtney Upshaw or Mercilus from Illinois. If Quinton Coples is available then even better (he is supposed to be a top 10 pick). So if we just resign Jones, who shouldn't command blue chip money, then we can use our 1st round pick to be our primary backup DE. We could use a 3rd, 4th or 5th round pick for our 4th DE, and we would be alright for the 2012 season. Keep in mind that we will likely get an extra 3rd or 4th round pick in compensation for Babin, and maybe an extra 4th or 5th in compensation for Tulloch. That is 9 picks for next year. I know some of you would rather a LB or a Safety, but looking at the upcoming talent it is likely we will get better value in drafting a DE with out 1st round pick. There doesn't appear to be a 2012 safety that is worthy of a 1st round pick, and I've never been much of a fan of using a 1st round pick on a 4-3 linebacker. You can find guys like Lance Briggs, Leroy Hill and Karlos Dansby in the later rounds. As for WR, I think D. Williams is breaking through. We should be fine with Britt, Washington, Williams and Mariani (Hawkins is a free agent, and I would be fine in resigning him as our 4th WR or getting another cheap veteran free agent/late round draft pick). So basically, my position is go for a DE. Outside of QB, they may be the most important position on the field. Also, there is some decent mid first round talent that we could get. Our needs, as I see them, are: 1. DE (Mercilus, Coples - pipedream, Upshaw) 2. LB or S (Te'o, Hightower, T.J. MacDonald, Ray Ray) 3. LB or S (Ronnell Lewis, M. Barron, Markel Martin) 3(c). DE 4. G 5. TE (to replace Graham who is a FA) 5(c). WR 6. C/G 7. S

Jake Scott is a FA

I wish we didn’t sign Amano to that huge deal. I can’t stand him. By far my most disliked Titan. I prefer Centers that don’t hold and remember the snap count.

Me too

He really needs to be moved from center.

My list

1st round possibilities
OL/Safety — It sounds like this may be a lineman pick, as I haven’t heard a lot about top tier guys in the Safety class

2nd round
Safety/LB/WR(a fast WR) — Probably a saftey, Hopes replacement

3rd round
OL/ DE/LB —(this is where is gets washy cuz it depends on what the first two rounds were) —Linebacker to replace Witherspoon or DE to add to the young guy rotation…. not a lineman if we took one in the first already

Upshaw plays 3-4 LB already, I'm not sure if he can make the switch.

Your concern for our pass rush from the DE position is deserved, but I think we would be making a huge mistake moving foreword without addressing the middle of our offensive line. It would be a poor buisness decision to surround your highest paid employee with sub-par talent.

I’m not ready to completely give up on Morgan and Jones just yet. JJ is also in his first full season as an NFL DE as well. Theoretically, this is Morgan’s first full season as well; not only in Gray’s defense but in an NFL defense. So I tend to give Morgan and JJ a little more slack then I would give a player who has been in the system and has extended playing time at the position. DE can be addressed in FA this year: with Osi Umenyoria being one of the big name DEs with expiring contracts. DE can be addressed after we take care of the offensive line, which I believe is the more pressing need.

Here is a list of how I think we should approach the upcoming draft:

1st Round: OG
DeCastro, Glenn, ect.
2nd Round: OC
Peter Konz, Michael Brewster, ect.
3rd Round: S/WR
Ray Ray, Marvin McNutt, Barron, ect.
3rd Round: DE
4th Round: OG
4th Round: S
5th Round: WR
6th Round: TE
7th Round: QB (Who knows, might turn out as the next Tom Brady. Low risk, High Reward pick)

If DWill keeps playing solid football, then scratch WR off the main priority

I’m thinking LB, DE, or S, possibly O-line if a legit 1st round pick worthy guy worth the pick is there

I'm with you

I think Williams has a great future as a #2 WR. Britt, Williams and Washington are good enough to win a Super Bowl with.

Don't Forget The RB

Don’t forget what we are rank at the running game in this draft. My idea is to trade the #1 pick for a #2 and #3 and this it how it would go.
2) Monte Ball RB
2) Marvin McNutt WR
We need more Offensive Weapons For Locker!
3) OG
3) DB
3) DE “Comp for Babin”
4) LB
5) DE
6) OT
6) LB “Comp For Tully”
7) TE

Nope

We need a down hill RB how many times have CJ ran up the middle 2 times and only get 1 or 2 yards we need more of a RB threat look at Houston,New Orleans and Green Bay.

by bendel1974 on Nov 18, 2011 12:06 PM CST reply actions

Your Right!!!

Yes, your are right why do we need to draft a RB when we have the highest paid RB running 12 for 13 yards that couldn’t be why were not winning I have proven my point just by letting CJ do his thing on the field.

You're a fucktard

Obviously it’s CJ’s fault because he should be responsible for blocking for himself as well.

Naa

I may have bought what your saying the 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th or maybe th 7th game but its just plan simple CJ got his money and now just sucks. Trade him for a 4th round pick and get rid of the cancer and yes 4th round thats the best we will probably get for him.

by bendel1974 on Nov 21, 2011 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

In That Case

That 4th round pick will be Boom Herron RB Ohio State.

so i was thinking

we could grab a center early (konz), then OLB (lewis OKL) or (david NEB), then a safety (ray ray MIA) and then use the free agency to grab another guard, (grubbs or nicks), and resign finny and griffin. As well as we are holding up this year, i think with a few additions we could be really solid next year. what do you guys think about the picks?

If you have haters, you are doing something right...

true true

could also draft a guard instead of a safety and pick up tyvon branch in FA
