Tennessee Titans Daily Links: Steve Smith Cheap Shot On Alterraun Verner Edition
Apparently Steve Smith took some his frustrations out on our boy Alterraun Verner with a cheap shot that led to one of the shoving matches we saw on Sunday. Smith was flagged for the incident, but it's still a punk move from one of the league's most well-chronicled hot heads:
"He was frustrated, and he took a cheap one at me," Verner said. "He kind of clothes-lined me and threw me on the ground. I don't even know what all went down. ... Someone told me he tried to sock me when I was on the ground. I'll have to look at film to see exactly what happened."
Matt Hasselbeck delivers the funny (via Chris Johnson) when asked about his 21 yard run that set-up CJ's score:
"Matt told me I was on his fantasy team, so that's why he slid down near the 1 and let me get into the end zone," Johnson said. "So everybody's got to thank Matt - all my fantasy owners."
One game does not a career make, but right now: Colin McCarthy > Barret Ruud. I'll be interested to see what PFF says of McCarthy's performance since they've been down on Ruud as the Titans'' MLB since before the season.
Chris Hope played in spots on Sunday, and he did a nice job to come up with an interception after Verner caused the initial deflection.
Gower still isn't happy with how Chris Johnson is running (though he seems to be referencing the first half more than the second half).
A week after fans and pundits really started to get on to him for not making the kind of impact plays we all expected, Akeem Ayers turned in his best performance of the season with a sack, fumble recovery and pass defensed.
Damian Williams has been on a nice little run over the past two weeks, and fantasy players have to love the fact that he's all the sudden become a touchdown machine.
The planed $26 million upgrades to LP Field might not reap a huge monetary reward for the city of Nashville, but it will have more intangible benefits in terms of branding and image in the tourism image. Of course, since the city isn't paying out a cent of the $26 million, they don't require huge monetary gains.
MJD tabs Cortland Finnegan as one of the most valuable players from Sunday.
Though I've never linked it much here, it'll be sad to see the PFR blog go bye-bye.

After the game
the only thing I could think about was PFF and how they better tell me how awesome he was… because I need this….

Also
It’s awesome how Finnegan has flourished in Grays scheme. That sack of Newton yesterday was awesome. He took him down so fast. It was funny comparing that one to Witherspoons.

There is no best AFC team
At work this morning, I asked a few coworkers who they thought was the best. No two people answered the same team. Take a look at the AFC standings real quick. The division leaders all have 3 or more losses. If that’s what it takes to be the best, well guess what, we’ve got 4 losses and are right there with the best of them then.
There’s just no team in the AFC I can look at and say is a dominant elite team.

Not many teams in the whole NFL we can really say that about.
Except the Packers maybe. Even the 49ers with their record still has me questioning whether or not they are for real or not. One thing is for sure….I’m NOT ready to drink the Texan cool-aid yet.

CJ said
“It was good to see how hard the offensive line was working up front, and how hard the receivers were working to keep guys off me — give me some creases to run and let me be the player I am. "
Does that mean he can only be successful when nobody touches him?

that's a little far
but he’s definitely not a guy who is going to make holes on his own, like some stronger runners in the league. The O-line has been much more physical over the past few weeks, and that’s helping CJ take more advantage of the plays where he does see the hole…

Exactly!! And what pleases me even more than his performance yesterday was....
the fact that he IS giving the O-Line their props, cuz that goes a long way in motivating them to block even more for him in the future.

this is what he has always done

It was refreshing to see production from the mlb spot. McCarthy seemed to be in on a lot of plays, didn’t get out ran, miss tackles etc. Hope he remains the starter

Maybe we should be talking about this a little more.
The Tennessee Titans went into Carolina on Sunday and took the Panthers behind the woodshed in their 30-3 victory. Chris Johnson had a big game, but wide receiver Damian Williams surprised some folks with his biggest performance of the season. Williams hauled in five receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown put the Titans up 14-0 and they never looked back.
After all, we have been pretty hard on him lately. So good to see him turning into that “playmaker” guy that we so desperately missed when Kenny went down.

He had a good game yesterday
But he still isn’t a playmaker in my mind. After all, that was the Panthers defense we just went ballistic on. DWill has to become more consistent before I start calling him a playmaker.

From the post game quotes, I found these interesting re: McCarthy:
(Munchak)
RE: (Colin) McCarthy active and around the ball a lot todayAgain, Jerry (Gray) did a great job. Frank Bush (Linebackers Coach) with his confidence during the week and then put him in situations, he’s out there calling the defenses for a rookie. Stayed on the field most of the game. Yeah, I think that just shows you what we saw in him. Again, it’s hard to watch everything he did but he handled himself very well, especially on the road. He’s calling the defenses. He’s getting his guys lined up, he’s making adjustments. I just think it’s great that he’s in there looking poised and composed and is definitely a big part of how we play our defense.
(Finnegan)
RE: Colin McCarthy’s performanceI think he played monstrous. He was wonderful. He had us all lined up. He even called us over before the game and said he was going to have his stuff together. We really believed in him. You believe in every family member, so he played well today.
He was a motivator at the []_[]
So it is no surprise to see his leadership transfer over to the NFL. McCarthy will definitely make a name for himself if he continues to play like he did yesterday throughout the rest of the season.

What sticks out most to me is that he called plays and was 'in control' of the defense.
That says a lot about his leadership and confidence, which is what both Munch and Finn brought up. Considering his play yesterday, I’d like to see more of him. Ruud will not be back next year, and finding a long term solution at MLB would cross that off the draft list. My main concern with McCarthy is injuries, he seems to have a lengthy history of them, but I haven’t followed them too closely.

Great link SuperHorn...
McCarthy played one heck of a ballgame and it is great to see his coaches and peers recognize his performance.
Also I like seeing that Ayers played one of his best games…I think spoon looked really good yesterday as well, and with all that said I cant help but wonder if the elevated play at the MLB position allowed for better play by Spoon and Ayers. It is apparent he had his calls correct, and put those guys in the best position to make plays as well.

Yeah, and it's catching on all around the NFL now.
Players are kneeling down to pray after they make a good play instead of spiking the ball or doing some other type of lame move.

I found this interesting:
The key? According to several Titans defenders it was how effectively linebacker Akeem Ayers or safety Michael Griffin “spied” Newton, a strategy by which one player spends all his time shadowing the quarterback. This maintains containment, so Titans teammates can pass-rush without fear of being burned by a wild scramble.
Now THAT…..is a good game plan!!

against who?
Texans deniers are in for a rude awakening this year. the AFC is down, and they are certainly as good as anyone, esp. if AJ comes back into form by January. dark days are on the horizon, folks.
