The Titans are killing it in FO's DVOA ratings. We're 6th in offense, 4th in defense and 2nd overall. The only big caveat comes when you look at their wins analysis/projections, where we've enjoyed the 3rd easiest schedule so far, and our projected strength of schedule is right in the middle of the pack. Those projections confirm what we've been saying about the schedule having some tough stretches coming, but I don't want to put too much stock in it because there are so many non-statistical variables (injuries, weather, focus, ets.) that you just can divine through a formula.
Here's the info for contact info for anyone who wishes to send condolences to the Heimerdinger family. Looks like the contact person is former Titans DC Chuck Cecil's wife, Carrie.
John Madden named the Titans' O-line the 'Madden Protectors of the Week'. I'm going to guess that Madden still judges O-lines by how many Super Bowls Brett Favre could win with them.
The Titans have brought in several defensive backs for workouts now that Chris Hope is going to miss significant time. There aren't many sexy names on the list, and it makes me wonder if they might be better of calling up Robert Johnson from the practice squad.

The Steelers are getting pummeled by the injury bug right now: Harrison is out, Aaron Smith is probably out, and Roethlisberger, Mendenhall, Moore, Hampton and Allen are all dealing with significant pain.

Most voters say they’ll win 2 of 3 games. I’m gonna go out on a limb & say they’re thinking those wins are over the Raiders and the Titans.

I realize that nobody nationally cares about Tennessee and Houston, but still… what a mistake not to at least move that game to 4pm and show it as the “National Game of the Week” or whatever. Granted, that’s a Fox stunt, but still…

I think it does
because they have NOTHING behind CJ. Every opponent is going to feel pretty comfortable cramming the box. They’ll still be productive in the run game, but the passing game will probably implode as long as AJ is out.
Plus, you can still score on that defense, even though it’s better.

The FO should always be looking for upgrades...
so it is in their best interest to see what is out there before bringing someone up from the practice squad and then weigh your options. I think the FO is handling this situation correctly.

They just have had a good run blocking O-line throughout their whole team history, even back in the day they always had some back who can eclipse over the 1000 yard mark each season… which is why i think that Foster’s success is mostly because he’s behind that line

with these blockers and Tate/Foster, they would prefer to ground and pound, exactly like they did against the Steelers. i’m not calling them a running team either, as they do have balance and can do both, but to call a team with one of the best running attacks in the league a “passing team” is nuts.

Previous to this year... yes were are (were) a run first team, this was a Jeff Fisher team...
and my point was they are a very balanced team on offense.

they are 1st in rushing attempts, and 28th in passing attempts.

but running more is actually what a balanced offense should do, it’s (theoretically) is easier to defend a pass, but the hard part is stopping a methodical trip down field with a power run game

they are better at running
they were playing from behind a shit ton last season, and still had a 1600 yard rusher. they do do both pretty well, but their run blocking is truly exceptional
even with their #1 RB banged up the first 3 weeks, they have 137 rushes to 113 passes. shit, their second best RB already has 2 100 yard games.

but I generally think that Houston had been built to run to set up the pass, but both facets of that can be easily disrupted, they are an offense that can do alot, but they still don’t know how to win, which is the real important stat i was referring to

while it’s nice to see hasselbeck doing well and it makes this season far more fun, i still think the experience would be better invested in Locker in the long run. also had no idea about the division being so wide open at the time.

munchak is certainly exceeding expectations
but a lot of that comes down to having apparently nailed the 2 coordinator hires (which is really probably the #1 most important thing a HC does in the NFL), with Palmer being the biggest surprise. Palmer will ultimately be judged by what happens to Locker though, so if he goes David Carr on us i reserve full right to flip on the guy again.
still uncertain what Raggone or Bush are bringing to the table, though there’s probably not much way of knowing that. for convenience, i’ll just blame Ruud on Bush and Britt’s knee on Raggone. done and done.

I still believe Carr was a result of the environment of the Texans/not cut out to be a Franchise QB

That’s the money quote. I was absolutely against Palmer (and Ragone & Bush while we’re at it), but my argument is based on QB development, not working with an established QB. In the long run, the success he has with Hasselbeck does not matter. If he doesn’t develop Locker properly, this year means nothing other than making football a bit more interesting while we wait for Jake.

So far Locker's looked pretty good (pre-season), but other then that we have to trust he's coming along well

Certainly the plan looks good, but a preseason performance is far from a guarantee.
Maybe he becomes like Rivers and Rodgers. Or maybe he becomes Brady Quinn. In three-four years we’ll know the answer, and its at that time when Palmer will be evaluated as a success/failure.

The issue is we've seen nothing. So what are we basing it off of?
I for one am not going to put any stock into preseason efforts, especially in his rookie year. He looked great in preseason, but we have also seen several preseason studs turn into regular season duds. About the only thing we can talk about is his ability to hand off without fumbling the ball, of which we have adequate game tape on.

Pre-season play is something... seeing how that's all we've seen
because you don’t want to count that as playing time doesn’t mean that regardless he was impressive in the pre-season and frankly I am glad we haven’t had a chance to see him in the regular season (save from a few hand-offs to CJ). So where is the problem?

its too early to judge his development, and therefore too early to judge Palmer’s effect on developing QBs- which was my primary point.

I don't see that as a problem seeing how as I am glad we have no need for him.

I have no problem with their developmental plan of Jake Locker. In fact, I am on record supporting it. My issue is with this:
I think they have implemented a pretty much fool-proof plan to make sure Locker succeeds here.

Locker will be a big part, yes...
But you’re not going to give him any credit for taking a guy who was deemed “washed up” and getting him off to a hot start? You’re not going to credit him for being able to adjust and work around issues they may be having in the run game? And for showing creativity and utilizing guys in ways that maximize their abilities? Let’s at least give him some credit for his work thus far, as offensive coordinator his sole job is not to just work with Locker 24/7, he’s responsible for the entire offense.

I will give him credit for all the things you listed.
Helping Hasselbeck, implementing a pass game, using a creative playbook. He deserves credit for all of that. But if Locker doesn’t become a franchise QB, then it doesn’t matter at all.

His primary job is to lead a successful offense. He is doing that so far. Part of Locker’s development falls on Locker too, which I really don’t think there is any cause for concern there, but to call his time here a failure depends on whether or not Locker succeeds is being a little too critical.

Eli Manning says that Locker probably won't play at all like Carr.
He’d also like to note that his play with the Giants hasn’t been nearly as consistent since Palmer left—and that’s really saying something.

I also think Munchak is just SMARTER than a lot of people give him credit for being. Personally, I think there just might be a reason why he’s always succeeded well beyond the abilities of his peers as both an NFL player and coach. He really seems to have something special. Some drive and the ability to inspire other to play better. I think you can see this in his career—all of it—when taken as a whole over time.
