Adams said he never strongly considered firing Fisher, however, in part because the Titans would have been on the hook for his salary.
"With what I am paying him, I am not going to let him go and pay him a lot of money,'' Adams said.

Absolutely disgusted!
He never even really considered firing Fisher?? Because of the money, we should have known….this guy could basically get away with anything, he could probably lose 59-0 and wear a Colts jersey in public in the same week and not get fired. When there is no way in the world to get fired, it makes it real easy to mail it in. That’s what happened the last 9 games, there isn’t one bit of accountability in the organization and it starts at the top. It’s hard to root for this organization right now.

Why not
Bill Cowher as a coaching option? looking at him today on CBS, you kind of get the feeling that he wants to coach again. i know that after YEARS of hating his guts as the Steelers coach, it would be a welcome change of pace to have him on board instead of Fisher.
I just read that
and about spit out my drink. Another bad omen is that the Titans/Oilers are under .500 since the merger so maybe the problem isn’t Fisher or Young at all.
Good and bad organizations start from the top
And the top man has spoken…he sees this team as a cash cow and doesn’t see a point in trying to improve it. As long as the cash comes in, he doesn’t care who coaches or plays…that’s why I am seriously thinking of boycotting this organization. I’ll still root for the players (CJ, Britt, Cook, Griffin, ATV, etc) but I will not feel bad if this team loses…that’s what the Titans deserve now with an owner like that.
I also think
This may be why Adams “chose” Fisher over Young…he cuts VY then he won’t have to pay him. He fires Fisher and he’ll have to pay him. Easy decision after that!!

so does this mean that we don't have to see an extension?
if he’s so worried about paying him then just let him walk next year.
Get 'em.

Probably so.
I can’t imagine he would resign him without anything short of a miraculous run. I mean, a coach with 17 years of tenure probably wants a big pay check…
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

if you read the whole article
Adams also said he never considered giving Fisher an extension, which means the coach heads into the final year of a contract for at least the third time in 17 seasons.
so basically we are going to be this year’s Panthers next year.

probably should've read the article
in any case, I can’t imagine that another 6-10 season would result in an extension. then again, nothing Bud does anymore makes sense.
and by “this year’s Panthers”, you mean we’re firing our head coach at the end of the year, right?
Get 'em.

This year's panthers means we're drafting first overall.
And drafting a certain QB.

Agreed
This team was just as bad as the panthers the last 9 games, that’s a reality. No qb, no defense and lame duck coach = 1st pick in 2012 draft.
that'll be the franchises first number one overall right?
Get 'em.

Another money quote from Adams...
“You look around the league right now and a lot of teams are letting coaches go. I don’t have to tell Jeff anything."
Basically a playoffs or bust ultimatum is my reading. Maybe Bud is more lucid than we’ve given him credit for…

I don't think either of them are stupid
stubborn to a fault and, in one case, older than dirt, but not stupid.

I'll agree with you there, stubborn is the best description.

And this is why we will be doomed to mediocrity
Until Bud goes to the big owner’s box in the sky.
Vince Young is the new politics and religion.
Bud talked about having another 10 years in him to get to a super bowl. I dont know if that means Fisher will be here 10 more years to help him get there.
That's exactly what that means.
Fisher will be here as long as Bud is.
Vince Young is the new politics and religion.
i don't think so
once it doesn’t cost Bud any money to let Fisher go, Fisher will be gone. unless this team turns around big time next year, which it probably wont, 2011 will be the Mustache’s farewell tour.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Agreed. Clearly, if this had been the last year of Fisher's contract
he’d be gone right now.

While I'd like to think that's the case, I don't see it.
Bud’s insanity is a mix of money lust, misplaced loyalty, and a ticking life clock. He’s stick with Fisher until the end I’m afraid.
But I hope you guys are right.
Vince Young is the new politics and religion.
What about the bit where the coaching staff decisions are up to Jeff?
If fisher’s keeping cecil around, he’s definitely not going to make it easy on himself. He’s got a tough challenge ahead of himself next year. Getting a new qb implemented w/ the team & fixing the defense in two-thirds of a year is going to be a task next to impossible.
If he pulls out a playoff team next year(although I have serious doubts about it) I’d have to say he deserves to stick around. You have to wonder, though, if he’ll use his mystical powers of persuasion to get himself an extra year or two before Adams sends him to the other side of the clearing, since its so unlikely the team will make the playoffs next year.
I thought the most telling part of the interview, however, was that Adams said he wasn’t getting any younger. (j/k) Maybe if things don’t turn around quickly, he can pull a Walt Disney and freeze himself until the year 2299, when Nashville overtakes New York in population & the Titans are the only football team in existence. (we could call them the Titans of Gilead; yea, i’ve had my nose stuck in Steven King’s Dark Tower series the past few months).
Oilers fans have known about Bud Adam'$ way$ for year$
Sure, fans in Tennessee loved him for bringing you the team – and why wouldn’t you? – but here’s the other side of the coin. :(
To be fair, Adams may have just been telling ALL his reasons and the $$$ was just one of many to keep Fisher in his mind. Let’s hope it wasn’t the MAIN reason.
Also, RE: playoffs next year...
It’s going to be the same route as this year – division title. The AFC is too good to expect a wildcard. And we can’t expect the injuries to pile up on the Colts again.
i just read on NFL.com that the panthers where bringing in ron rivera for HC coaching job i swear i wish bud would die or have a wake up call fisher needs to leave he is not the answer.
The Day The Titans learn to use: Vince Young, Chris Johnson, Jared Cook, Kenny Britt, Randy Moss, and Nate Washignton is the day we win a super bowl.
What I learned
was that the part about evaluating the QB and coach independently was garbage. He now admits that Young had to go because Fisher was staying and refused to work with Young. If Bud were not on the hook for Fisher’s $6.5M, Vince would still be the QB and we’d have a new coach. It’s 100% about the money he would have to pay Fisher. This was a business decision, not a football one.
One would think that putting
a superior product (aka A WINNING TEAM) on the field each week would be “good for the pocketbook” also…

The only thing that will make Bud
think about actually putting together a winning team is if the Titans stop selling out each game…if that starts happening, then I bet Fisher gets the boot. But, by then, it’s too late…I would say that 60-70% of fans are fairweather fans…they’ll run at the first sign that the team sucks and probably will never return.
To me, this is a big long-term business risk…but Bud doesn’t care about the long-term right now.

"they’ll run at the first sign that the team sucks and probably will never return"
Shouldn’t they be gone by now then?
Ha
I do think some fans are leaving after this season but I think the Titans will lose more fans after next season.
