In the 2010 season, Jason Babin had the best year of his career. Why bring it up? Good question.
Jason Babin has been in the league SEVEN years, he was a FIRST ROUND pick by the Houston Texans in 2004, and the closest he's come to putting up the numbers he did this past season (44 solo tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 12.5 sacks) was 2005 when he recorded 24 solo tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 4 sacks. He also had a descent showing as a rookie, recording 51 solo tackles and 4 sacks. But what happened after he left the Texans in 2006? Nothing. He recorded playing time in 4 games in the two years he spent as a Seahawk and recorded a whopping total of 2 tackles. He then spent a year with the Kansas City Chiefs where he played in 7 games and recorded 25 solo tackles and 2 sacks. In 2009 he went to the Philadelphia Eagles where he played in 12 games and recorded a measly 11 solo tackles with 2.5 sacks. The next year he ends up with the Titans and BAM! Jason Babin earns the first Pro Bowl appearance of his career.
The difference? Jim Washburn, one of the most highly touted defensive line coaches in the NFL. The problem? Jim Washburn recently signed with the Philadelphia Eagles after spending the past 12 years with the Tennessee Titans. Washburn has honed players such as Kyle Vanden Bosch, Jevon Kearse, Antwan Odom and Albert Haynesworth. Without Washburn we've seen what can happen to players who've shown brilliance and left, only to discover they seem to be somewhat lacking. Albert Haynseworth comes to mind right about now. In the two years since he left Washburn and the Titans, he's recorded a meager 43 solo tackles and 6.5 sacks. That's 8 less solo tackles, 2 less sacks, and 3 less forced fumbles then he recorded in his final YEAR with the Titans. Now Haynesworth has gone public stating that he's willing to take a pay cut to get to Philly to play under Washburn.
Do you think Babin will still produce without Washburn's presence? For a defense well under construction, I sure hope so.
On another note, will Babin even be back with the team for the 2011 season?
