Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Suppose we get Haynesworth...

Knowing not nearly as much about defenses than the average Madden 2011 player, I wonder if the Titans could employ a 5-3 defense lining up 3 DTs, 2DEs, 3LBs, 2CB and one S.  It would run similarly to the 85 Bears 46 defense with the main goal of disrupting the offense and getting to the QB.  The key reason for adoption would be to get the Titan's best players on the field.

I have to imagine that this sort of defense would be suffocating against the run, and a high risk/reward against the pass, but vunerable against West Coast Offenses and spread formations.

Certainly, our defensive linemen (with AH) would be talented enough to pull it off, but I'm not sure if our LBs would be good enough to stop the type of slants and quick crossing patterns that would be typical against high-pressure defenses.

Not sure how it would work against spread formations,  You would certainly have to get to the QB quickly as there would be a LB covering a WR.

Any thoughts?

I'm with Gramsey.

Not only do I like it, I’d go with playing less linebackers, too.

3LBs vs. 2

I think my main thought in going with 3LBs is that I think 2 LBs would leave the middle too thin. In a shotgun formation, the line will push the pocket leaving a larger void in the middle. The WRs and pass-catching TEs would more likely camp out in that open void versus going long.

Madden 2011

I don’t even own a game system. I wonder if anybody could try this sort of defense (53 or even a 52) out with AH and see how well it works.

you lose as soon as the QB

figures out to get the ball out early

how about this lineup?? : )

it could just be a packaging, we would call it the Big formation

William Jason Albert Tony Jacob
               Stephen Will
  Cortland Alterraun
                   Michael Chris

and maybe the option of a Big Nickel with Jason M instead of Will W, below Chris and between Alterraun

like from the 40's?

maybe on third and short, but this formation as a standard in our defense… no way, not in a division with Manning and Schaub. with even more teams going pass wacky these days, loading another d-lineman in place of a DB or LB in a lead full of quasi-spreads is asking to be cut apart. imagine how bad a WR screen could be when offense knows the D will always only have 6 legitimate players capable of defending a pass on any given down.

maybe this would work if we had a hybrid DE capable of backing into coverage, but then we are bringing 3DTs and only one true DE pass rushing. with JJ showing real promise as a pass rusher, this MAY work, but his past work has shown him much more effective against inside lineman.

besides, this debate has already been had. back in the days before the 1950s this was the standard defensive formation. when the NFL changed with more pass friendly rules, defenses had to adapt, and thus one of the DL became another LB to compensate.

Well, the 3-4 defense isn't too different than this

A 3-4 defense typically has 3 DTs with 2 rush linebackers at the line of scrimmage the majority of the time. Just, in this 5-3 D, the DEs would be rushing primarily and not dropping back in coverage unless you do some sort of zone blitz-like scheme. I could see something like this being used on 3rd and longs where you play the safeties and CBs way off to prevent the big play, but I doubt this would be used that much. Interesting idea though…

Interesting...

but I don’t see this working against a P. Manning lead offense. Maybe against the Bedazzlers and the Texans.

A lil late to be installing a completely new defensive system.

& any QB with a brain would just run screens all over the field & slants thru the middle for quick strike completions
