Mortensen: Titans Still Talking Trade with Redskins for Albert Haynesworth

Gramsey is pumped.  Chris Mortensen is reporting via Twitter that the Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins are once again talking about a trade for Albert Haynesworth

I was a fan of this move in the offseason, but I don't know how I feel about it now.  He is the best defensive tackle in the game when he wants to be, but he has proved this offseason what we all feared about him once he got the money.  This move made a lot of sense when the Titans were worried about the defensive line but after the way they played in the preseason I am not sure bringing in Haynesworth now would help.

What say you?

Because he's washed-up

He’s looked terrible in preseason against second and third string offensive linemen. He’s a cancer. He’s a head-stomper. He would be disruptive. There is no guarantee that he would add anything and the Redskins aren’t going to give him away cheap.

He’s miserable, not washed-up. Bring him back here, he’ll bust through brick walls to show everyone how “washed-up” he is.

I understand where you're coming from

and I know that you may be right. If he comes back, I’ll shut up and pull for him.

But if the defensive line is already clicking – which it is – why gamble on a mental case that hasn’t showcased his super-human abilities since he left Nashville?

This team needs a WR, not Big Al.

No way you believe that

You may want to overlook his craziness because of his on-the-field potential, but he’s an emotional train wreck with a rap sheet dating back to his days in Knoxville. He is no different than Pac-Man. He simply cannot stay out of trouble, whether its a pregnant stripper, a paralyzed motorist from an accident on I-40 (did you forget this one), a stomped head, or a string of lawsuits.

Say he’s worth the risk, but don’t say he’s not a mental case.

Do it, but only if it's for a third rounder or lower.

Albert still has too many question marks to give up a second round pick.

That said, a healthy, motivated Albert lined up next to Jason Jones makes this the best defensive line in football, possibly by a wide margin.

Perhaps.

But I still think paying a third at any point is too much, considering our defensive line has looked strong. Al is suddenly not as much of a need right now, so why cave to their demands? Let me say this, Jimmy:

If you polled all of the players in the NFL and asked them which DT is the best on the field, Albert Haynesworth would likely be #1, and on a bad day the top 3.

If you polled all of the coaches in the NFL and asked them which DT is the best on the field, Albert Haynesworth would likely be #1, and on a bad day the top 3.

If you polled all of the experts who pay attention the these things and asked them which DT is the best on the field, Albert Haynesworth would likely be #1, and on a bad day the top 3.

He demands a double-team on almost every play, thus opening-up opportunities for the other players to succeed. He was universally recognized as a once-in-a-lifetime dominant force on our DL. Now that Washington has eaten a huge chunk of his salary, his price is even reasonable.

Bring him back, and let’s blow this division out of the water!

I'm no super-genius... or are I?

by CrazyTitan on Sep 7, 2010 9:41 AM CDT reply actions

Convinced we will have a top D-line without him

But his impact on a pass rush is a scientific fact at this point. We’ve gotta pressure the QB to win in this division, and he would help immensely.

For those worried about the “cancer” element, he’s liked by his former teammates in TEN, and Washburn has already made him into the best DT in the league once, so there’s plenty reason to expect him to work just fine as a Titan.

This would also enable Jones to work outside occasionally, as I think he’s plenty athletic to play out there and it might keep him healthier.

by WC22 on Sep 7, 2010 9:44 AM CDT reply actions

I thought the same thing with Jones at DE back in April

When the Titans first looked into this trade, I thought moving Jones to DE on some downs would work…imagine a DL of Jason Jones, Tony Brown, Albert Haynesworth, and Derrick Morgan. That’s a pass blocking hell for other teams.

Jovan Haye or Dave Ball and a 5th rd pick? I love and do not want to part with the 4th rd pick. Both of those guys qualify as 2nd stringers for the Redskin D-line, which is what they’ve branded Albuuurto at. Then we don’t have to cut anybody. That’s the bargain they should be driving. We need to hold onto the 4th for trade value in case of an O line injury mid season. Any roster move after the cut to 53 is a big deal.

Who leaked, and why?

The thing I’ve been trying to figure out since I saw this latest rumor was who leaked the information and why. After reading Jack Bechta’s column at NFP about how he won the bet by creating a new rumor about one of his clients and getting it on the ESPN ticker in like 6 minutes, I’m deeply suspicious of all of this news, especially amorphous trade talk.

I doubt the Titans started the rumor-the DTs have looked pretty good in preseason, and the best one hasn’t been playing.

Did the Redskins? I doubt it. Trading Haynesworth is sending a bad message to Shanny’s players-complain loudly enough, fight what we’re trying to do, and you can get out of here. While it’s a sunk cost, trading him so soon after paying him the bonus (which Bud can’t and wouldn’t include in a trade) is a very difficult pill to swallow.

That leaves Haynesworth and his agent (Chad Speck, IIRC) as the most likely source of the leaks. They’re trying to put pressure on the Redskins and get Albert’s name out there. It’s been known for a while he’d be happy to leave the Redskins, and the Titans are an obvious trade partner. There may or may not be actual substance to the talks (I’d love to know McCormick’s source-inside TEN or Speck), but my bet is the leak is coming from Haynesworth’s camp.

Report came from Mort

JLaC was the Redskins beat reporter with the WashPost before moving to NFL Network. Schefter was in Denver and did a book with Shanny, I’m pretty sure. If somebody in WAS wanted to leak, either of them would be an easy and convenient way of doing that.

Given that the report didn’t actually come from either of them but from Chris Mortensen, I suspect another source. There’s a TEN connection with Mort, obviously, and WAS could be using him to camouflage the leak is coming from them, but leak from Haynesworth’s camp seems like the right place.

by NewsToTom on Sep 7, 2010 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Schefter is Shanny's point man

Will be interesting to see what he says. The huge bonus is a sunk cost, but the dollars going forward are not, and are significant for a guy that they’re having this much trouble with. Is he a $5 MM per year player in a 3-4? Are they willing to eat that salary and forego trade compensation to make his life miserable for Bonusgate if he continues to loaf? I think the #4 offer is legit, since it’s what McNabb cost, but it will take more to complete a trade.

by WC22 on Sep 7, 2010 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

If the 4th rounder is correct, TEN is lowballing the Redskins because they know there’s not a ton of real interest out there and they know they don’t really need him. There’s no way to spin only a 4th for Albert as a win either to Snyder or to the press, thus my speculation it’s Haynesworth’s camp trying to stir something up.

Herm Edwards...you crack me up

I thought this was ridiculous when Herm said below on the air.

Meanwhile, former Jets and Chiefs coach Herm Edwards recently gave some credence to the musings of league observers (like us) regarding Haynesworth’s overall reliability.

“Jeff Fisher is a smart football coach,” Edwards told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times earlier this month. "The Titans did not want Albert Haynesworth back. There’s a reason for that. Jeff Fisher didn’t just wake up one day and say, ‘Oh, by the way, we’re going to get rid of him.’

by earlers on Sep 7, 2010 11:13 AM CDT reply actions

there was more to Herm's quote..
“He dealt with this guy for so many years and said, ‘You know what? Enough is enough. I’m tired of a guy that’s a good player for about 10 games.’ Doesn’t play all 16 — hurt, something’s going to happen, he’s going to be disgruntled. . . .”

i agree

if youre paying him 90 million (or whatever it was) you dontw ant him good for only 10 games. when youre grabbing him for a 4th round pick and signifcantly less money, and already have a solid set of DTs behind him — its not as big a deal

The O-Line depth is. This year’s O-Line = last year’s CB/Return game.

He is miserable in Washington, playing a 3-4 scheme he hates. Get him back to good ol LP Field to play 4-3 and have him, Fisher, Cecil and Washburn all have a little chat and get him fired up to actually be the best. No more of this only in a contract year bullshit. Having him back and getting double teams would free up Captain Morgan to have an insane Rookie year.

Look what Albert did for KVB......

4 year sack total with Albert 35.5 4 year sack total without Albert 7. I know that there is a lot of man love for KVB and what he brought, but reality, from my perspective, is that Albert made KVB. Imagine what he could do for someone with Captain Morgan’s potential!!!
