NFL Roster Cuts: Tennessee Titans Cut LeGarrette Blount
The Tennessee Titans today have claimed two linebackers off waivers; Tim Shaw formerly of the Chicago Bears and Patrick Bailey who was last with the Pittsburgh Steelers. To make room on the roster for these two players they cut RB LeGarrette Blount and Stanford Keglar.
I think it was a mistake for them to cut Blount. I am sure they hope to add him to the practice squad, but with all of the injuries to running backs this preaseason I bet someone claims him. Blount obviously had some issues, but he proved that he could run the ball in the last two preseason games.
The Titans also added 6 players to the practice squad today. They include DL Hall Davis, WR Dominique Edison, CB Pete Ittersagen, C Kevin Matthews, S Myron Rolle and LB Patrick Trahan. That means they have 2 spots still available. Told you Myron Rolle would clear waivers.

I like Rusty Smith and all...
But why would you favor him over Blount? We’re much more likely to use Blount than Smith in a game. Did Fisher consult with Al Davis on this one? This just makes no sense.

Tim Shaw
it seems this guy was a special teams standout in Chicago. Works hard. If this is the case then he is an upgrade from Keglar.

yeah
i was thinking of him as like a brendon ayanbadejo.. but i know nothing about the other LB Bailey
Bailey
he’s a tall LB. something the Titans lack. that’s all i can find on him.

maybe
He will clear waivers. You have to think some teams will pass on him because of his temper… Some cause they have what they want at HB. Also there are other backs available still, betts, julius jones… I think willie parker too. Maybe the titans are after one of them.

I like Blount
But perhaps one of the reasons they cut him was because our offensive line is so good it can make up for some RB deficiencies, if we aren’t able to put him on the practice squad. Gado did look good behind our line, and I think other vet backs might be able to produce as well.

That was a stupid move.........
………..The Titans would cut Blount. He’s a sledgehammer. Something we’re gonna be needing this season. Cut Keglar. Yes, but not Blount.

Running backs are more replaceable though, if we do lose him

I trust this move....
and here’s why. Almost everyon we’ve released, with the exception of Eric King and Cris Carr, have turned out to be too much trouble to work with, or are at the last stages of their career. Look at White and what happened to him and don’t forget Fat lazy cry baby can’t even pass a conditioning test abusive Albert. It may seem crazy but I’ve seen these cuts work in our favor more often than not.
I don't like the move...
however i hope it was a personality thing rather than just to make room otherwise it seems like a mistake. i hope we resign Gado he look aright in the pre season + he knows the team rather than someone new. do we have to cut someone else to make room for another running back?
Really?
He’s played Tailback much in his career? I realize he’s a Rb, but he’s a FB… Cj and Ringer are tailbacks… How many teams ever have played with 2 Rbs?

WTF
I have a feeling that both signings are stopgap moves until McRath comes back and then Blount gets recalled from the PS if he somehow miraculously slips through waivers today

Are people really that upset?
I’m dumbfounded by the anger. CJ2k didn’t go anywhere, and Javon Ringer is a beast. And there is still a good chance Blount remains a titans. Fisher shoring up LB position for now.
i agree
Sure blount ran well in preseason, but so did Gado. I doubt Blount would have seen much of the field, if any at all, if he had been kept on the 53
He may not see much time on the field
but you wanna roll around with CJ and Ringer and that’s it? If someone gets hurt you calling up some scrub from the practice squad to get some carries? Can’t wait… Dumb
by Big Bad Bulluck on Sep 5, 2010 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions
perhaps blount will be that "scrub from the practice squad"
If CJ and Ringer are both injured then we are screwed anyway.
I'm not saying if they both
get hurt… If one gets hurt during a game and you only have 1 other halfback on your roster your screwed at that point

but a guy with as much talent as Blount usually doesn’t make it.

Ringer may be a beast
But he is not a bruiser back that we could really use to bash defenses down for CJ to break the big ones. Ringer is more of a change of pace back, one that can run for a few plays while CJ gets his breath back from 80 yard rushing TDs.
What headline I don't want to see anywhere in 24 hours time

mistake
if he gets grabbed before they can clear out one of the lb depth to secure him through the suspension.
only having 3 rb is not the primary reason it’s a mistake in my mind. Primary reason is he’s a good sledgehammer. There are plenty of middle of the road ones.
Thought they were doing awfully well on the roster this year. Some “huh?” maneuver was bound to occur.
Two big problems with this.
I’m probably treading over old ground, but i think it’s a mistake to leave only two hbs on the roster and second Blount was a different back then both Ringer or Johnson making it harder to gameplan.
I can only guess the coaches were thinking Blount would be the weekly inactive, which makes no sense since a battering ram back is just what you need to keep CJ fresh.
BLOUNT TO PACKERS ??????
all they have is ryan mathews if they pick up Blount he could be starting within a year

it is kool-aid when
blount is regarded as the end-all-be-all of “power backs”
You'd be foolish to deny that he was a good power back.
He was running over defenders left and right.
by fanoftheunderdogs on Sep 6, 2010 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Stopgaps.
Is all they are. I don’t buy into all of this “two halfback” nonsense. I haven’t looked this up, but I’d say we only had 2 HBs and one FB most weeks last year. We need another quality body that can play special teams. If that is indeed why at least one of these two were brought here, then I’m totally fine with the move. I feel pretty confident that these guys are better at covering kicks than Blount.
So now its
irrational to want 3 rbs on our roster? lol

It's not irrational to want 3
It’s irrational to freak out over a third running back being cut. It doesn’t matter who it is.
Matter of fact, it doesn’t matter who our 2nd running back is. If he is playing for a long period of time, we’re screwed.
Blount is just this year’s AJ Trapasso.

It's not irration to worry about the 3rd RB
You should always want the best players for each position on the team…
Matter of fact, it doesn’t matter who our 2nd running back is. If he is playing for a long period of time, we’re screwed.
That’s why it’s so important to get solid RBs in the backup spot. Ringer looks solid but who is going to be the 3rd RB? Blount shows promise to be a very good RB so why risk losing him and not Durand, Schommer, or Johnson? We need to develop good RBs to be behind CJ…
Blount is just this year’s AJ Trapasso.
Comparing Blount to a backup punter is hilarious…the situations are not even close.

You are right. They are not even close.
They are exactly the same. They are both undrafted training camp darlings who the fans and fans alone freak out about when they are cut.
It doesn’t matter. This is not even one of the top 5 things this team has to worry about.

If he's on practise squad isn't he still available to be signed by another team
am I way off on this or are they not still treated like free agents
I'm no super-genius... or are I?
He was undrafted, folks
Every team had a chance to snag him and passed. Has he been appreciably better than people expected? Not really. He’s a very big, fairly athletic runner. If he makes the practice squad, he’s got a chance to develop into a roster player. He’s been an above average player with limitations playing in the second half of preseason games, not sure what all the fuss is about.
The fuss is part Blount and part why not someone else?
The Titans need a bigger back to complement CJ/Ringer. Blount fit that profile perfectly plus he showed a lot of potential. And, why not play this cut/practice squad game with one of the young safeties, Schommer/Johnson, or one of the young OL, such as Durand? And, why do we need 2 LBs?? I think the fuss is that a lot of people don’t understand the situation…

How many plays was our third string back on the field last season… If CJ gets hurt, we’re having to sign another back regardless most likely. And we have lot of other problems at that point. Blount was/is a good story, but it’s not a big deal.

We MCM’rs get emotionally attached to certain players every year during training camp. As far a 3 RBs or nothing, no need this year because…VY gonna be slangin’ the ball through the air all DAY!

And I agree w matt on Stefon johnson being better story…
I just would like to see a 3rd HB on this roster
by Big Bad Bulluck on Sep 6, 2010 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions
A 3rd HB that can do nothing but run
is a waste of a spot, since he would not see much of the field. Special teams performance > 3RB running skills
Seriously, I'm beginning to think you're our Special Teams coach in disguise.
You argue that Donnie Nickey should stay because he’s a solid special teams tackler. And now you say that having a true power guy in the backfield doesn’t matter if they can’t perform on special teams. By your logic, any non-playing backup in the NFL should be cut if they don’t have special teams skills. Blount has potential.
In my book, Good Potential > Special teams performance. Every time.
by fanoftheunderdogs on Sep 6, 2010 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions
They've been doing that for us for a while now.
by fanoftheunderdogs on Sep 6, 2010 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions
But cutting guys because they can't contribute to special teams when they have potiential?
Not a smart move.
by fanoftheunderdogs on Sep 6, 2010 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions
there are priorities
The 2 LB the Titans added are obviously being brought in for special teams. Blount will be on the practice squad, so he will have time to learn how to do more than just run. They can bring him up later in the season if they need to.
You're assuming he clears waivers.
And I agree, there are priorities. But depth at the halfback position, especially with how these guys wear down and get injured, is something I’d think would be more of a priority than their special teams play.
by fanoftheunderdogs on Sep 6, 2010 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions
He has 3 more hours to sit there.
He is going to clear
He could have been claimed the minute he was released
We wouldn’t find out until 24 hours after his release. When a waived played is claimed. Every team has 24 hours to snatch him. The team with the highest waiver priority gets him.

Someone has to play special teams though
and everything works out better if they all aren’t “developmental projects”
Yeah, and that's why those two Linebackers got in.
Halfbacks don’t normally make good special teams guys, unless they have good return ability. I doubt Blount had the speed to be able to do that.
by fanoftheunderdogs on Sep 6, 2010 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions
See we agree! ;)
But I think Blount doesn’t play special teams because he needs more practice. Thus practice squad ;)
Good point.
I still prefer keeping the guy on the practice squad for halfback depth. I mean…
CJ is speed.
Ringer is balanced (Speed and power)
Blount is power.
That’s one halfback for every situation.
by fanoftheunderdogs on Sep 6, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions
My theory is:
If the Titans were really not interested at all in Blount, they would have released him the first day along with everyone else.
They wouldn’t wait a whole day and then release unless either: They decided “whoa we don’t like this guy after all” OR “based on what we saw in waivers Saturday, we think Blount will make it through and we will sign him to practice squad.”
I’m going with the latter. That is why they have spots still open on PS.
So much for him being on the practice squad
Guess another NFL team felt he was worth more than a special teams LB

Javon ringer? This so just bizzare. I’m so used to fisher using 4 RBs in an effort to continue to use his style that the lack of a surplus of them is really weird to me. Especially when you consider that blount has anvils in his pads and a chip bigger than CJ’s ego on his shoulder.

and then the next thing i c is this: TitanInsider247 Blount will rejoin the Titans on their practice squad.
If this is true...
then I do think in 3 years we will be saying what a mistake this was.
But, hey, at least we have Ryan Durand on the roster and some great special teams players!! And, backup RBs with Blount’s potential are just everywhere so no big deal…
really?
Putting all of our eggs in one basket (cj2k) is absolutely ridiculous. Blount could have contributed this year with the skill set he has. I have a hand time believing that a man of blounts size cannot learn how to pass block or play special teams.
by vancouverTITAN on Sep 6, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Sure he may be able to learn
but I guess the Titans decided they had more pressing needs that didn’t leave a spot for an underunderstudy RB
Can you explain to me?
Why waive Blount instead of the 9th OL Durand or the 6th safety Johnson?
If backup RBs are a dime a dozen, then why did Blount get picked up so quickly?
Why is it that Blount doesn’t play special teams (he did play in one special teams play in the Saints game)? Is that not a coaching issue?
Why does every backup need to play special teams? You have 15+ backups that can play special teams filling in for 9-10 special teams spots, so why do you need an extra one?
Why do we want to keep giving CJ short yardage runs? So, we can wear him down in the next couple of years? We have to start thinking of the future for CJ and how to extend his career…
Is it true Blount was claimed by the Bucs
or is it hearsay?
