I'd like to see this as the new chant Titans fans adopt when the offense goes stale. This message goes out for someone to do the math and give us a percentage of unsuccessful drives that follow this trend: Run on 1st Down, Run on 2nd Down, Throw on 3rd and 5+. Looking at CJ's success rate on runs, I see an offense that seems dedicated to calling the exact play that is expected. Sounds like a good way to get the best RB in the league killed. Sounds like a good way to limit time of possession. Sounds like a good way to make things hard for the passing game (Four passing attempts in the first half of the Giants game?!). I would much rather see Tennessee flip the script and go Pass Pass Run on a majority of drives. If I remember correctly, Football Outsiders did an analysis of play calling and concluded something similar to what I'm saying (see ESPN mag last month?).
This sounds like a job for Hal. I imagine you have time before midterms start. So Hal, or someone else,
-Give me the percentage of Titans' series that go Run Run Pass
-How many of those drives are successful? Unsuccessful?
-Compare it with the league.
-Next analyze the drives where Tenn passes on first down.
As for anyone else on MCM still reading this post, it would warm my heart to see someone at the Denver game holding a sign up high that reads:
RUN RUN PASS
*For any conspiracy buffs out there, how about running the data on series with Vince under center where the Titans pass on first vs. drives with Collins under center where the Titans pass on first.
