"I definitely want it, I definitely want it,'' said Young, who was runner-up for the Heisman that year, when he guided Texas to the national championship. "But he won it fair and square definitely, and it's much respect to Reggie, man. He had a great career and he's already won a Super Bowl before me. I'm already mad about that.
"But at the same time I am definitely happy for him, man, and he is definitely the Heisman Trophy winner for that year. But if they send it over to me I am not going to say no to it.''
Vince Young would take the Heisman.

He didn't win it "fair and square" Vince
He was not an amateur athlete.
Official MCM Hater!
"If anyone asks you, you fixed my television. Now go!"
Because
He broke a major rule by accepting gifts from prospective pro agents which if had been known at the time would have prevented him from receiving any awards
USC > UT (Both of them)
The award is for an amateur athlete.
Reggie Bush was not an amateur athlete.
It was like if they wanted to give last year’s award to Chris Johnson.
Official MCM Hater!
"If anyone asks you, you fixed my television. Now go!"
he was not being paid a salary to play football
Bush won the heisman based on his performance on the field. They can take it away, but that doesn’t mean Vince won it.
He WAS being paid a salary to sign with a certain agent.
I don’t see the point of the distinction.

Once he took money from an agent
He was being paid. And he was no longer an amateur.
Official MCM Hater!
"If anyone asks you, you fixed my television. Now go!"
Which is why they will take the hiesman away
That doesn’t mean he didn’t win it. Would be lame for VY to take it. Sloppy seconds.
Wouldn't be "sloppy seconds"
Would be “athlete with the highest number of votes as most outstanding amateur football player.”
Take out the cheaters, Vince won.
Official MCM Hater!
"If anyone asks you, you fixed my television. Now go!"
he would win technically but not in spirit
I’m sure you could find someone that bought VY dinner, same with all other “amateur” footballers.
It would be selfish of Vince not to take it.
This is bigger than him. In 10 years, people won’t remember this fiasco. But, in ten years, some UT coach could be able to point to the third Heisman at Belmont Hall (Coaches offices) when he’s recruiting. That’s a huge deal.
And, I'll add that the system is broken anyways. If the voting were done after the bowl games like it should be, Vince would have won like he did every other post season award for best player.
this system is broken
because college football is nothing more than a subsidized minor league for the NFL, which makes millions and millions of dollars off the backs of players who are denied any compensation for their services, while the coaches make millions. Indentured servitude ftw
Re:
college football is nothing more than a subsidized minor league for the NFL, which makes millions and millions of dollars off the backs of players who are denied any compensation for their services
Oh, you mean like a first class education, free housing and meals, the best coaching/facilities money can buy?
Ugh. Seriously?
Look, the wages in minor league baseball range from $850/month – $2150/month. Given the option, I’d prefer cush living with college coeds and an education over seedy motels and wages that could qualify for welfare. Guess that’s just me.
but if it's so great,
then why are college football players always being caught taking money, gifts, etc from someone? Is it that they just don’t appreciate the situation they find themselves in in the proper way?
Again, seriously?
Not all, but a lot of these kids aren’t from affluent backgrounds. So, when someone comes to them with money, of course they are going to take it.
I’m not suggesting the system is perfect. It just is what it is, and the alternatives aren’t any better. The players are trading wages for an opportunity to make more money than most people will in a lifetime in the NFL.
Correction.
So, when someone comes to them with money, of course a lot of times they are going to take it.
but how much money does minor league baseball take in?
College football is BIG business. And without the players it is nothing. Everyone is allowed to make money, except the people that actually play the game.
Because it's an amateur sport.
That’s the point. These kids have a choice, and they choose to play football. If there is exploitation going on, they are afforded the opportunity to leave the program.
The coaches do.
But, only 20 college football programs in America are profitable. People often get caught up in these gross totals from ticket sales, etc., and completely disregard the fact that most of these programs lose money. They can’t pay wages when they are in the red every year.
Whatever. This is going no where.
The point is that these players are compensated, albeit in a different way than in professional sports. There is no disputing this fact. You think they should be compensated more, and we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
I agree that it's going nowhere
but if you admit to the players being compensated, then how are they still amateurs?
If Vince Young went back and played his final year of eligibility now and won the heisman, would that be "fair and square"?
The fact that he’s a professional football player wouldn’t affect his stats or the play on the field.

Because he shouldn't have been on the field - because he was not an amateur.

which is completely stupid
Why does being paid in with scholarships, facilites, medical treatment, etc not make him a “professional”?
For the same reason that pee wee football players whose jerseys are subsidized by Bill's Hardware are not professionals.
I hated those Bill's Hardware Giants jerks
The coach’s son was the QB and they always got Nutty Buddies after the games….
"how did gifts from agents affect Bush's play on the field"
they made even his presence on the field illegal and irrelevant. as in “this shit doesn’t count because you are a cheater and thus ineligible”
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
VY Would Have Won the Heisman
if voting had taken place after the 2006 Rose Bowl. Give VY the trophy – he earned it.
they aren't going to give it to him anyway though
Go Titans! Go Magic!
"I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, and wear Reebok." - Shaq
"They was instinuating that I was gay" - Charles Barkley
I'll just say this:
Effect is a noun.
Affect is a verb.
That is all.

Vince Young would have also won the Heisman
If the Heisman voters actually watched and analyzed the games and not just feed into the hype. Reggie Bush has a great year and deserved the Heisman more than some other winners we’ve seen, but he didn’t deserve it more than VY, before or after the bowl season. Vince had the final say and I’m glad he embarrassed the Heisman trust, but it goes to show how that award is slowly losing it’s prestige.

True
It’s all about media generated hype fueled by the schools. Mark Ingram is a solid running back, but he wasn’t even the best player on his team (i.e. McLain, Richardson, Julio Jones). Why did he win – because there were no standouts and Alabama lobbied better than anyone else.
VY was the most dominant college football player in the land, but he lost the popularity contest. No one criticizes the Texans anymore for skipping Bush in the draft.
