Tennessee Titans 53 Man Roster Prediction

Is my name on the list? (Photo by Mary Ann Chastain/Getty Images)

I meant to do this after the Cardinals game but I never got around to it. After the jump is the 53 that I have from the guys that are currently with the team. I wouldn't be surprised to see them add a veteran offensive lineman or running back if one is cut that they like. Also keep in mind that Gerald McRath is out the first four games and will not count against the 53.  That means there is another player who will make the team.  I really don't have any idea who that is going to be.  Nick Schommer seems to be the leader in the clubhouse.

I like Matthews too

But he does look like a very small man compared to rest of the lineman. Must’ve had a good dose of momma’s genes!

RB

I am not sure that they will not look around and find a veteran running back after cuts start.

by TitanBlue on Aug 30, 2010 12:11 PM CDT reply actions

7 LBs?

I know they have to cover for McRath, but is Mike Rivera that much better than Ken Amato to justify keeping him around? I would rather see them keep Schommer and make Amato a last gasp LB fill in. I mean, if we really get to that point, we’d be screwed anyway.

by groovymountain on Aug 30, 2010 12:21 PM CDT reply actions

Not sure they will keep 3 QB's now

I wouldn’t be surprised if they do what they did 2 or 3 years ago, and keep only Young and Collins at QB. Rusty has a good chance of clearing waivers and making the practice squad.
O line I would maybe say Durand over Velasco, but that is a crapshoot, as is the final LB spots. I like your pick of Rivera, makes sense in some ways.
No space for Keglar? He isn’t great but he is young, somewhat talented and experienced. I would add him over Winborn or Rivera, but it could go either way.
I would think that they might try and find a spot for Rolle somewhere, maybe even with the spot they would have for the 3rd QB. Keeping 6 safeties is a lot but it could make sense – they are always useful for special teams, and Fuller is more of a non descript DB than a safety.
The final DE spot is between Brock, Ball, and maybe even Bakhtiari. Personally, Brock sounds like the most intriguing because he may provide a spark against the Colts 2x a year.
As for picking up other teams scraps after final roster cuts, I could see us picking up a running back, a LB and a CB.

Is it strange that I wish we still had Ben Hartsock?

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.

by Jimmy on Aug 30, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Looks a bit like mine

1. You’ve only picked 53. Most predictions I’ve seen (including mine) have 54 including McRath.
2. Unless you include Amato as such, I don’t see them keeping 7 LBs (6+McRath), especially since there isn’t, I don’t think, anybody compelling at the bottom of the roster (Rivera hasn’t really stood out, IMO).
3. I’ve given the edge to Keglar (as OLB roster fodder for 4 weeks) over Winborn because Winborn’s a vested veteran who’ll be owed his full-season salary if he’s on the roster Week 1 (unless he’s already exercised his vested veteran rights). Would they keep Winborn around for the entire season? I doubt it.
4. Another possibility is they keep an extra safety, probably Schommer, rather than an extra OLB and play 2 LB with 3 safeties. They did that last year a little with Kaesviharn.

by NewsToTom on Aug 30, 2010 1:58 PM CDT reply actions

I mentioned the 53 or 54 thing

up top, and said Schommer gets that spot.

I thought Rivera played well Saturday night, and Keglar hasn’t done anything ever.

Your point about Winborn makes sense, but I am not sure they feel comfortable with any of those other guys out there while McRath is gone. Winborn isn’t great, but he is solid.

Rivera

has played pretty well throughout. Still not sure he makes it.

by numbertenox on Aug 30, 2010 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, Rivera showed better against the Panthers. I just don’t see a compelling case for keeping any of him, Keglar, or Winborn, to the point where they’d keep one more linebacker than they normally would. Winborn’s best case for a spot is Allred not being ready Week 1. Keglar’s roster spot is, in my mind, like Hill’s-we don’t want to play this guy, but we need him around in case somebody gets hurt and we’d have to scramble to find somebody off the street. Ditto Sean Ryan, who I kept over a 7th LB, though without quite the same sense of “we don’t want to play this guy.”

Here’s the problem I have with Blount’s spot: say Ringer picks up a knock and misses a game. Are you then comfortable with Blount as the backup? I think right now he’s an rusher only, would come out on third downs, and isn’t worth much on teams. Either guy RB3 is potentially just a placeholder, but in terms of what they can contribute if necessary, I have Gado ahead.

by NewsToTom on Aug 30, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

RB - Blount

Fair point about Gado, but if Ringer goes down then there will be a waiting room of veteran RB’s jumping at the chance to play for the Titans. RB’s can pick up the offense very easily, especially veteran’s.
I say keep Blount, who comes cheap, instead of a vet like Gado. If Gado is on our roster week 1 then we have to pay him his veteran salary for the entire year. Blount will cost nothing. I say we cut Gado, and if we need him in week 4 he will be available. We can then cut Gado when we don’t need him anymore and it costs us nothing.
Bing bang boom Blount is a lock to make this team.

Is it strange that I wish we still had Ben Hartsock?

Honestly...

I haven’t seen anything from donnie nickey! I don’t see why everyone is so high on him we have a lot of great young talent and I wouldn’t choose cutting a future saftey to keep a special teams guy around. I would rather keep Myron Rolle around he has more uses you can’t allow a player like that to slip away. And even Schommer looked great and has been making plays all over the place! I’m sorry but Nickey has been on this team too many years and hasn’t made any big time progress I say keep the fresh guys they can easily fill his void!

I watched both games...

And Rolle, Johnson, and especially Schommer stuck out to me making big plays. But I didn’t see Nickey do anything! I didn’t even know he had a tackle until I looked up the stats!

by datboybevans on Aug 30, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Look, I don't like Donnie Nickey. But Myron Rolle has not done a damn thing for us.

Donnie Nickey had two tackles Saturday. Myron Rolle’s name is not even in the box score because he didn’t play.

Neither one are in the box for the Cardinals game. Rolle made 1 more tackle than Nickey in the Seahawk game.

So for the preseason, that is 3 tackles for Nickey, 2 for Rolle. Not exactly “making big plays.”

Quit making stuff up.

by gramsey712 on Aug 30, 2010 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

You looking at preseason..

And fighting for a guy that is no more than a special teams guy! Myron has the ability to end up starting in this league. And for most part he probably will get a lot of field time on thursday.

I would rather see him play against a good offense than a struggling one. We need help in pass coverage so what better team to see what he has! Nickey hasn’t proved anything either and he been playing for 7 years! So he with his experience he should have more that 1 more tackle.

Why keep a guy that’s probably about to retire over a guy that’s new to the system with talent and a mind for the game! How much do you hear about nickey…nothing.

And when I said big plays I was refering to Schommer with his great tackling and interception. So that’s not making up anything. How about you tell me why Nickey is so worthy of a roster spot, besides him taking up roster space for 7 years?

Guess you don't check out the press conferences...

The coaches have already said that he shows great awarness and has already picked up how the defense is ran. On the other hand Nickey hasn’t even been considered to play saftey only special teams. Even if Rolle doesn’t make the team Nickey still doesn’t deserve a spot he needs to be replaced with someone that will make a diffence. We have Johnson and Schommer still left to play saftey other than Nickey.

And still you avoid my question.
What does Nickey have to offer?

It’s not like he’s going to start, but I know he has upside and speed, along with a lot of years to develop but as for winborn you can’t teach and old dog new tricks! Keglars stays and can play where ever you need him too! He’s young, quick, and healthy has a lot of energy I would rather have him running around on special teams other than a guy that’s close to retirement!

all that really matters is that he is good! Now to be fair

Washington has displayed much better hands this preseason, and I also believe Gage is a good option at WR. However, Britt has the highest ceiling of them all, and has shown in games that the talent to be a No.1 option is there. But this preseason he’s struggled mightily.
