Tennessee Titans Training Camp with the Arizona Cardinals

I was lucky enough to be in attendance for today's practice at Baptist Sports Park.  It was neat to be out there and see the two teams practicing against each other.

Here are some things I observed today:

  • Derrick Morgan was on the field today today in shoulder pads.  He took part in the individual drills before the teams started practicing together but sat out the team drills.  I bet he is a full participant in practice tomorrow.
  • Justin Gage did the same thing.
  • Cortland Finnegan did not practice but did some running on a side field at the beginning of practice.  He was running really well.  He might not play a preseason down, but I have full confidence he will be ready for the regular season opener.
  • William Hayes came out and pushed a sled around at the beginning of practice.  He had a brace on his knee and was moving well.  He looks on track to be ready for the opener.
  • David Thornton put a helmet on for the first time this preseason.  He pushed the sled around for a while as well.  I will still be surprised if he plays this season.
  • Alterraun Verner continues to make plays.  He picked off Matt Leinart in 7 on 7 and later jumped an out route and took the ball away from a receiver.  I know Jeff Fisher isn't going to let him start, but he is making a strong case for himself.  I interviewed him after practice and will have that up tomorrow.
  • Vince Young looked good today.  He did get his arm hit on the last play he was in and came up holding his shoulder.  That prompted Fisher to stress again to stay off the quarterback.
  • Damian Williams made a bunch of plays today.  He is another guy that I don't think will get to see the field much, but it is good to know they have him as an option.
  • Matt Leinart is not good.

Leinart is not good

Hilarious. I bet they dont win their division this year. While they still appear to have a pretty good defense, I think the losses of Warner (the biggest loss) and Boldin will really hurt ttheir playoff chances. The Niners look really good, at least they did against Minnesota. But who knows, we still got two weeks before the real teams show up. I just hope our defense isn’t just looking improved, that they can come hard during the regular season too and get us off to a fast start in the easier part of our schedule.

Haha.

Isn’t it funny how horrible of a track record the majority of us have for draft day? I mean, everyone hated CJ being picked, his fan rating was an ‘F-’ at the draft, and who-knows how many Titans fans were pulling for us to get Leinart instead of VY.

I remember NOT wanting the Titans to draft Leinart

I don’t like to toot my own horn but I was very low on Leinart back in 2006. He just doesn’t have the arm strength or quick decision-making to be an NFL QB.

I was high on VY’s potential…I was hoping he could sit for a couple of years behind McNair but that didn’t happen. But, he’s finally showing his abilities on the field now.

So, good luck Cardinals…your defense better be great!!

Alterraun Verner may play his way into a starting role...

I still think McCourty has the edge for that other starting CB spot, but the distance between he and Verner is razor thin. Even if McCourty plays solid this last two preseason games, I think Verner has a chance of passing him. I know Fisher has some history of not starting rookies, but I think Verner has shown he’s different than most rookies. Level-headed, instinctful, and already knows the defense well from both the nickel and CB positions.

And, I wish there was a way to get Damian Williams on the field more as well…but that would mean fewer opportunities for Britt, Washington, Hawkins, etc. As long as guys stay healthy and continue to improve, this is going to be a very solid WR group.
