Blogger Q&A: Panthers Edition
Hello to members from Music City Miracles! Jaxon here from Cat Scratch Reader. I thought some of you might have some questions about the Panthers regarding our upcoming 'scrimmage' this weekend. Personally I enjoy engaging other fans and getting insight into what is going on with other teams. I'll be sure to check back periodically over the next day or two, but have patience since we all got day jobs! Also, I few of my members might wander over and throw in their two cents as well.
So with that what questions do you have?
Let me go ahead and address two I get all the time:
1 - Jimmy Clausen will not overtake Matt Moore at QB prior to the season opener. Moore will get his shot and I expect him to start the entire season as Clausen learns the ropes from the sideline or maybe mop up role (if we have any). Clausen has looked pretty poised so far and his potential is apparent, which you will see Saturday night in the 2nd half.
2 - Steve Smith won't play in the preseason but I'm 99% sure he will be ready by the opener. He's already back at practice.
You can also check out Jimmy's answers to our membership questions here.

Well Hell...
you answered my questions before I asked them.
How is the D-line doing with the loss of Peppers, are they a strong group, or do you think it will take a season or two to develop playmakers there?
I was thinking that when I saw an hour had passed and there weren't any questions
Jimmy’s got like 12 over on CSR.
The DL was our biggest worry pre-camp. But after 2 games we feel much better as our 1st team D did well against both the Ravens and Jets first team offenses. The pass rush seems to be okay too…but let’s just say cautiously optimistic so far.
Since the traffice is slow here how about another one for ya!
I have to admit that I do not follow the Panthers very closely, I do know some of you key players however and enjoy watching your running attack.
Who besides Steve Smith should an opposing defense worry about at the wide out position?
Honestly...nobody
That’s one of our biggest needs, a #2 WR. We are hoping its Dwayne Jarrett. The only other options are Brandon LaFell and Kenny Moore for the 2010 season. We have other guys in the mix but those three are essentially who the Panthers are picking from.
Another Moore question.
How optimistic are you about a season with Matt Moore under center? I imagine that with the strength of your running game you don’t necessarily need a stellar QB to be successful, but still, do you envision him as a serviceable starter this year, a future star, or a placeholder for the future (or somewhere in between)?
I would go with your first description...'serviceable starter'
A guy who protects the ball, can execute the offense well enough and can make a play when you need him too but not necessarily expect him to carry the offense.
Gotta disagree with you Jax....
Hey Ya’ll!! JKP from CatscratchReader here…
As a fellow Panther fan, I think there is a lot of optimism surrounding Matt Moore after he finished 4-1 as a starter with great numbers (98.5 passer rating and a 8-2 TD/Int ratio). In my opinion, I think the fans are excited about his potential this year after he ended last season on such a high. So, I would say that Panther fans are envisioning him more as a future star than serviceable starter…
What's the scoop on Armanti Edwards?
I followed him somewhat in college, never a dull moment with that guy at the helm. How is he adjusting to the WR/KR positions? Any inkling to get him in at QB in a wildcat look (though I admittedly get sick of hearing about the wildcat nowadays)?
No wildcat for Edwards yet
and I think its going to be a while if ever. He has struggled at PR so far…he muffed one last week and didn’t charge a short kick leading to 2 turnovers. He’s made a few plays at WR but its going to be a year of transition for Edwards. But we like his athleticism, he looks like a gamer once he gets things figured out and gets some confidence.
Also Must Disagree Here Again...
Although Armanti Edwards has been dismal thus far as a WR and horrific catching punts, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he won’t see time in other ways…
In the past few years, Fox’s offense has been very conservative and utilized few trick and creative formations and plays. In the few times that the Wildcat was run, DeAngello Williams would run it and it wasn’t all that successful because Williams really a wasn’t a passing threat. BUT with Armanti, I would have to think that Jeff Davidson would be a fool not to utilize Armanti in the Wildcat! The Wildcat QB may just be perfectly tailored to Armanti and his skill set, and being that the Panthers spent such a high pick on him, I think they’ll find ways to use him this year…
If there is any position that Armanti could contribute this year with, it will be the Wildcat QB. I’m telling ya, you haven’t seen it yet, and just like Zoolander didn’t want to spoil Magnum until it was ready, the Panthers aren’t going to show the Wildcat with Armanti until it means something in the regular season. But believe me, those plans are drawn, and Armanti will most likely see time as a WildCat QB, if not only for a few plays as an experiment…
I'll believe it when I see it
and I don’t see Edwards running the WC in 2010. I’d rather put Williams back there anyway and let him run it
I watched the first Panthers preseason game (Actually rooted for you guys that time too.)
And I have to say… Jimmy Clausen looked like a pro QB even though he was walking onto the pro field for the first time. Moore didn’t look so good. So, I’m asking… Do you know exactly why Fox is giving Moore the start instead of Clausen?
by fanoftheunderdogs on Aug 26, 2010 12:24 AM CDT reply actions
As Fox would say its about his 'Body of Work'
Moore earned the job last season with the 4-1 finish to the season. He would have to bomb in the preseason to not get the start on opening day. I agree though Moore looked shaky against the Jets…but then again he’s never looked good in the preseason.
But I agree with your assessment of Clausen too. The kid has some moxie, he makes his reads and knows how to get rid of the ball under pressure (somthing he learned at ND I’m sure!). I’ve been very pleased with his play…but I would still prefer he ride the pine for the season.
Well, if Clausen is so impressive.....
then do you have any thoughts on why he kept getting passed over on draft day…when he was predicted to go in the top 5 picks??

It seems related to his ego, attitude
he came across as conceded, etc…not a team guy. But he’s proven to be just fine in that department. Yes he has some swagger but don’t you want that with your QB?
Hey There Titans fans...
Just wanted to tell ya’ll how jealous I was of some of your draft picks this year!
I was especially furious when Tennessee nabbed Damian Williams with # 77, 1 pick before the Panthers! Regardless of what they say about USC receivers, I think Damian Williams is going to impress….
Also loved the Titans picking Rennie Curran. He was another player I was hoping the Panthers would draft. Although small, Curran is a little fire ant and shares some similarities to our Jon Beason…
And lastly I was jealous of your new CB, Alterraun Verner, who could be something special.
Anyway, just wanted to let ya’ll know that I thought ya’ll had a nice draft class with Morgan, Williams, Curran, & Verner…Can’t wait to see em play Saturday!!
