Tennessee Titans 24 Arizona Cardinals 10 Quick Recap
I will say this, I feel a lot better after the first two preseason games this year than I did last year. I know the preseason means nothing, but this team looks a lot more focused than the one did last year that was supposed to be a Super Bowl contender. Here are some quick observations from tonight's game. Much more tomorrow.
- Vince Young and the first team offense looked crisp again. VY missed some throws, but that throw to Craig Stevens was beautiful.
- The first team defensive line was getting after it. They didn't get a sack, but they knocked down Matt Leinart and Derek Anderson all night long.
- Matt Leinart and Derek Anderson are terrible.
- Damian Williams looked comfortable as a return man and caught a lot of passes. Gramsey texted me at one point that he had outplayed Kenny Britt so far. I had to agree. I am sure he won't see the field as a receiver this year, but you have to feel good about him in the future.
- Lavelle Hawkins keeps making plays. That hurdle was awesome.
- Marc Mariani is going to make this team. He looks good covering kicks, returning kicks and as a receiver. Could this finally be the year we rid ourselves of Paul Williams.
- They called Jared Cook's name a couple of times. That is always a bonus.
- LeGarrette Blount ran the ball like a man on a mission. He showed a lot more power tonight than he did against the Seahawks.
Preseason records don't mean anything, but a win is always better than a loss. We will have much more on this game tomorrow. Let me know anything of importance that I missed.

I dont think it was too hard to outplay Kenny Britt tonight...
he looked awful
AND VINCE YOUNG HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!!
Britt's problem seems to be
all in his head.
Got to be
I am really disappointed in Britt. I didn’t expect him to be Larry Fitzgerald right now, but he looks like a high school kid out there. He looks like he has regressed to me.
Official MCM Hater!
"If anyone asks you, you fixed my television. Now go!"
He needs more reps, practice and more dressing down from Dinger...
hopefully he’s back to last year’s form by the first reg season game. plus more matured.
When he kicked that ball....I was like....WTF!!!
Jeff Fisher wanted to tear him limb for limb…even Jon Gruden was pissed..

Yea that Kick was uncalled for
& Immature. But I will give Britt some leadway against the Cardinals passing D.
Also, How many Passing Interference Calls did anyone see not get called? I witnessed 2 at least in the first half…

I know this sounds crazy...but...
it was almost like he didn’t want to catch a pass thrown from KC…I mean I know him & VY are tight…but…C’MON MAN!!!!

I wouldn't catch anything from him either.
I have no issue with Kerry throwing for any other team. The Cardinals needed him more than we did last night. hahaha

This better be the year we get rid of Paul Williams
We finally have some more talent, plus he sucks. That drop was absolutely brutal. He and his one career catch should be moving onto a new career sometime soon…

Yep
What an ugly drop. Perfect pass on 4 and 4. That guy has 0 concentration. Wish I could of seen more Rusty Smith. Sigh. Maybe the last preseason game I’ll get to see more. I think next game VY and Collins will get all the snaps. Announces had nothing to say but good things about Smith from their stay in camp. Props to your o-line for being able to handle the different QB styles.
Can't remember the last time Miami had so much talent.
Rusty Smith! (Titans future qb)
They also said:
(Chris Simms) “This guy can play!”
Actually, your best shot to see Rusty is next game.
Most teams run the 1st team the majority of the 3rd preseason game, then give them a rest in the 4th game before the regular season starts.
The Titans usually do the opposite – they run the scrubs for most of the 3rd game, then the starters the majority of the last game, so they can obliterate the other guys’ scrubs and “build momentum” going into the regular season.
ty for the heads up

Don't we play the Saints next?
Let the kid, Rusty or Collins play all game against those Saints. Gregg Williams is trying to find a new line so there will be shots at the QB and I don’t want VY out for week 1….

I was happy with the pressure/ run D
and I’m really starting to like Tulloch. Can’t wait to see the D line when Morgan, Hayes, Ford, and Tony are all playing with these guys healthy
For sure...

One other note
Our young players looks good. I’m really excited to see these guys in a real game. Britt, D. Williams, Hawk, Ringer + Blount on offense alone have me dreaming of high scoring games. It seems like its been a long time since we had young players that we can call up-and-comers.

gado has a nose for the endzone
would be tough to keep him as a 4th back, but he sure looked better at the goalline than any of our other rbs over the past couple years

The first team defense looks solid...
the pass rush and run defense was good. Tulloch seems to be emerging as the leader of the defense replacing Bulluck.
better than solid
they looked really fast. I do not know whether I haven’t seen football in a while, or whether they were slower last year, but they were flying last night. And 31 wasn’t playing.
This looks like a solid team, maybe a year away from being elite.
I though that Jeff Fisher was blowing smoke
When he said that the team accomplished a lot this week. But in this game the team did looked a lot better and in all very few penalties.
I'm not a VY fanboy, I'm a VY supporter
Good showing all-around.
-I thought the d-line played great. Not a lot of sacks but great pressure. I wonder how good they’ll be when they are at full strength. At least we know we have tons of depth there.
-I’m really unimpressed by McCourty at CB. He wasn’t terrible but he just doesn’t seem like a starter in this league. Verner didn’t do anything spectacular, but he was solid.
-I thought Hope played great. There were some rumblings that maybe he lost a step last season but he looked quick to the ball tonight. Griffin on the other hand still doens’t look too good. I’m starting to worry that whatever is wrong with him is permanent.
-Vince Young played like Vince Young. He’s getting better through the air but still makes the occasional mistake. The throw off his back foot and his fumble off the pump-fake come to mind. He just got lucky with his mistakes tonight and they didn’t hurt the team.
-We have the best RB in football but you gotta love the depth behind him. None of those guys are CJ but it won’t hurt us too much if the unthinkable were to happen to CJ.
-Kenny Britt continues to disappoint. Damian Williams continues to impress. Nate Washington continues to not drop passes (for now). Paul Williams continues to suck.
I try not to overreact to preseason games but my optimism grew tonight. It’s still cautious optimism, but I feel like things are looking up. Not Super Bowl up, but the playoffs don’t seem so outrageous right now.

I strongly believe that this team has enough talent to make the playoffs and do some damage
We have a tough schedule, and certainly room to improve, but you’re right, this season is looking up so far.
Now if we can only make sure we don’t drop our first six games of the year…
10. 28. 18. Let the season begin.

VY 9-for-13 128 yards with a 101 rating
Wow, VY played really good…I get the feeling that if he doesn’t complete every single pass then people think he played poorly. The throw off his back foot was because he got some pressure up the middle…if Favre were to make that same type of throw, then it would be all over the highlight reels.
VY is now 14/19 for 206 yards with 1 INT in ~2 quarters worth of football. He has led three separate long scoring drives. His only mistake was that INT in the Seahawks game…other than that, he’s been great.

SHOCKING to some of you huh....
Last year I wanted VY to play week 1. Nooo. Everyone thought it was the miraculous K.C. who helped us win 13 games the prior year. KC was Fisher’s guy. Well finally after six suffering defeats; then everyone finally caught on. MAYBE KC SUKS.
It’s a shock to me that some of our Titan Fans still are not satisfied with VY as our QB. I suppose he is going to have spoon-fed all of us a super bowl, so then everyone would get off his case & NOTHING ELSE TO SAY ABOUT HIM!
On the other hand, I like all the doubt & media on his case. It’s always better to be the underdog and WIN than be favored like the Jets/ Vikings and LOSE!

I went on an audition today for NFL Network for Thursday Night Football promos.
I wore my Titans hat and shirt. First, we had to act like we were watching our team lose – I pictured the Ravens and nearly lost my shit – threw my hat across the room, crumpled to the floor. Then, we had to act like our team was winning – I just pictured CJ running, and running, and running…

Solid All-around Performance
QBs: Good play from all QBs…especially VY who was highly efficient and his accuracy has improved greatly from last year.
RBs: Solid…actually the worst-looking RB was probably CJ, but he still looked good when he got some room to run. I think we’ll have solid backups in Ringer / Blount.
O-line: First team offensive line was a little poor in run blocking but great in pass protection. Second o-line looked better but could still improve.
WR/TE: A lot of great young talent…Hawkins, D Williams, Cook, Mariani all looked great. Britt looked fine…he just didn’t get many opportunities and Washington is actually catching passes. Paul Williams deserves to be shown the door…about two years ago.
D-line: Great pressure and should only get better when Brown/Hayes/Morgan get healthy. This is a deep D-line and if Jason Jones stays healthy then this is going to be a much improved group from last year. I thought Babin/Ball played really well also.
LBs: Tulloch still looks good. McRath/Curran made some plays. Solid all around play.
CB/S: McCourty got beat deep…other than that, the secondary didn’t give up too much. Of course, they were going against Leinart/Anderson so it’s hard to say they were challenged.

I wonder if blounts punch in practice had anything to do with samkon gado getting into the game before him (a guy they signed days ago off the street) and getting 2 opportunitys inside the 5 which are situations that you think the coaching staff would really want to see blount take cracks at after . .it was also reported that Jeff fisher was un sure if gado would receive any playing time at all in this game and that it would make sense to get a week in the system first. Fisher backed blount after practice but I think he clearly sends a silent message to legarette here saying it was the heat of the battle but you still can’t be doing that. which is good I hope he makes the team he looks really good. with him and ringer he will really be able to change the pace when cj is tired.
I'm sure the punch had an effect on his playing time
It’s only going to make it harder on Lagarrate because other Defensive players on other teams read about Blount’s punch. So anytime they see him #, they are going to raise their head instead of their pads because they don’t want to be punched or messed with. So naturally, we have to bench him to keep him healthy for week 1.
I love the Ringer/ Gado combo…..& how high can Hawkins really jump?

We look solid
I thought Verner looked fine, Blount, Ringer as well. Our starting o looked great all around, in my opinion. Dunno about backup o line. Not particularly strong. Vince is the eye pleaser so far with his stats this season besides one: two fumbles in two games. Granted, he didn’t lose either one of them, but that makes me worry he may have contracted a case of fumblitis from Adrian Peterson. Did anybody watch Marks much tonight? I didn’t hear his name or see him do anything eye-catching. I really wanna see our D-Line come back to being feared. I always thought that was what was making our secondary look good.

You mentioned Jared Cook. I don’t follow your team, but as a USC fan I thought he’d be having much more of an impact by now. What’s holding him back? Did you guys break him or something? He was fine when he left here. I thought he’d be an elite pro receiving tight end.
stuff 'bout stuff.
yeah, sorta...
He was awesome when he first showed up last year, but then he got hurt and never really caught up. We’re all still pretty high on him, but wondering the same thing…
Mental mistakes.
He has all the physical tools, just needs to keep his head in the game.
One thing you forgot, Jimmy:
“Nate Washington got his hands underneath a low throw initially ruled incomplete. Fisher challenged and the replay showed he made the catch.”
Oil spills, sink holes, volcanoes, and floods notwithstanding, this is a clear omen of the Apocalypse.
Am I correct in saying
that Hands Washington has yet to drop a ball?
In Fairness To Washington ...
He tends to make the spectacular plays that he shouldn’t make but screw up the routine plays that he should make. That’s why the Titans need to just throw downfield to him more and live with the feast or famine thing instead of trying to make him a fundamental cog in the offense. Washington reminds me of Alvin Harper for the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys would lean on Michael Irvin, Emmit Smith and Jay Novacek to move the sticks, and then go to Harper for the big play downfield or in the redzone.
The problem with the Titans is that beyond CJ2K – who isn’t an Emmit Smith type back BTW – they don’t have the reliable options on offense to use in the passing game. Justin Gage is a 4th WR on a good team and Bo Scaife is just a guy (if that). Kenny Britt really needs to step up and be this team’s Michael Irvin (minus the off-the-field stuff of course).
"He tends to make the spectacular plays that he shouldn’t make but screw up the routine plays that he should make."
Me and a buddy were saying the exact same thing last night.
It's funny you mention that because...
when they showed VY, CJ & KB on the sidelines all joking around and having fun together…that’s exactly who I thought of…Troy, Emmit & Michael…I hate the Cowboys, but loved the way those three got her done!!

Not sure what you all so out of the 1st team O that was so great.
Their first 2 series were the epitome of a snorefest. Slow-motion with no “oomph” whatsoever. Sure it’s preseason, and they don’t want to go all out, but I’m going to have to reserve judgement for when they do.
Here's what I saw.
I didn’t DVR this game for some dumb reason so I can’t rewatch this to verify…
However, I believe that for the first two series we were trying to run it with CJ against 8 man fronts so we were getting stuffed.
Then Dinger adjusted and went to the pass to open up from room for the run. It worked which is why we moved down the field on the next few drives and CJ started the get some running room.
It wasn't really the playcalling
just the general low energy level of everyone out on the field. Looked like no one even wanted to be there.
Only saw the 2nd half, but if we can get our passing game going in the regular season then we’re gonna be tough to beat.
Very true
If this offense can be two dimensional it can put up a lot of points.
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.
"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
2 Dimensional
The offense can be 2 dimensional if Fisher and Heimerdinger are bold enough to let the young WRs and TEs play through their issues. Fisher and Dinger haven’t been keen on letting WRs and TEs experience growing pains in the past, but they really need to put Cook (or Stevens), Damian Williams, Kenny Britt, Mariani, Edison, Hawkins etc. on the field and see what happens. Going back out there with the same Gage/Washington/Scaife lineup and sticking with them will mean a one-dimensional offense with Johnson not only carrying the running game but also being the biggest threat in the passing game.
Even if it takes going with a lot of 2 TE or 3 WR sets, getting the passing game going has to be on Fisher and Heimerdinger. They can’t keep pretending that Scaife, Gage and Washington are anywhere near as good as some of the WR/TE combos in the NFL and giving them 70%-80% of the snaps on offense like they are these Pro Bowlers who deserve it.
Well, we will definitely see more of Cook, Britt & Mariani...
I’m not sure about Williams or Edison.

Thanks to Favre
Warner’s going to get a ton of calls/media attention for him to come back.
After last year’s craptastic start, most Titan fans came into this season with some trepidation. Last night’s game helped calm me somewhat. The defense was solid and the offense looked really good.
The good news is that the opening opponent in the Raiders have almost zero playmakers at wideout. So the #2 cornerback issue may not bite them until week two, and they get Leftwich aka the Statue at QB.
If the DL can consistently play like beasts
the #2 cornerback issue will become even less of an issue
This game had me excited.
I’ll have a more detailed post up after I watch the game again (likely tomorrow), but here are my knee jerk reactions:
D-line play. Wow. If JJ can stay healthy, this defensive line can be as good as our 2007/2008 lines. It’s scary how good we can be if D-Morgan can make an impact day 1. We’re two deep at every position on the line, which will allow us to constantly wear out opposing offensive lines.
Blitzes. Cecil is finally finding his own as a defensive coordinator. Blitzes were coming from every position last night (LB, Safety, and CB). And, he was mixing some zone blitz in there as well…dropping our defensive linemen into coverage.
The Pistol. I’ve never liked this offensive formation, but innovation is always encouraging. As a side note, Baltimore seemed to do well out of this formation in their second preseason game with Troy Smith at QB.
Vince looked like an NFL quarterback. His throw on the slant route impressed me the most. For the first time since CJ’s been here, I felt more comfortable last night when we were passing than when we were running the ball.
Mariani and Williams are both capable returners. That’s a refreshing contrast from last year.
RB’s. Gado looked excellent. I still have issues with Ringer. He looks great when a predetermined hole is established, but he struggles when he has to find a hole in the zone and plant and go. IMO, he’s built for more of a man running scheme, and not the zone running attack that we use. Blount looked good and ran hard.
Cecil stops blitzing once the games matter
Book it.
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.
"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
There was lots of blitzes in the first half against ARI...
So Cecil better keep infiltrating what worked last night!
by titanwarrior1 on Aug 24, 2010 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions
Don't Book It
Cecil couldn’t blitz last season because the DBs were horrible and he had a bunch of old, slow battered players on the edges. This year the DBs are better, the defense has more speed and quickness, so the blitzes will actually work. I have no idea why so many fans keep calling for blitzing when the personnel doesn’t support it. If you could have a good defense no matter the personnel just by blitzing, then everyone would do it.
In the case of last year, it didn't matter. I think you're wrong here.
When the front four can’t get pressure, you have to bring it from else where. I don’t care who you have at corner, if the QB has 6 seconds to throw, they are going to find receivers. You’re better off going with a cover 1 or zero coverage and trying to put the QB on his back.
One must keep it balanced
If we never blitz like last year, QB has all day to drink his coffee and decide on his throw!
by titanwarrior1 on Aug 26, 2010 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions
The blitz package was great..
it showed off the athleticism of our youn players even though we were missing some key starters. Cecil has shown some creativity with stunts, and blitzes, I just hope Fisher does not dial it back when the regular season comes.
I really beleive that if we stay aggressive on defense like we did last night and the secondary can keep plays in front of them like they did most of last night we will be a good ball club this year, and wind up shocking more than just one team
Matt Leinart is terrible, I will agree 100% with that. Before the game it looked
like he was going to hurl.
When they interviewed him, he was downplaying his crummy performance. Derrick Anderson was not as terrible as Leinart, but he did miss an easy TD.
IT is a littlle premature to feel confident in the Titans judging from two pre-season games. The defense looked very good last night. The offense was able to put up points no matter who was under center. Remember this was the Arizona Cardinals last night, not the best the NFL has to offer.
Don't hold your breath
She prefers to blend all the QB play together in order to avoid saying that VY played well.
I'm not a VY fanboy, I'm a VY supporter
So if I was under center, we'd scored anyway.
Just following Joy Kat line of thinking
I'm not a VY fanboy, I'm a VY supporter
Totally Ridiculous
Last year, the first team offense needed a fake punt to score a TD. It was so bad that Jeff Fisher altered his preseason plan to give snaps with the starters to Vince Young (mostly to mollify Bud Adams as Fisher never intended on playing VY again) and was playing Kerry Collins into the 3rd quarter in order to try to get the first team offense going.
This year, Vince Young has played 4 series. Not the first half and into the 3rd quarter as Collins did during preseason last year. 4 series. And in those 4 series, the first team offense has produced 2 TDs and 1 field goal, all on long drives. And it hasn’t been CJ2K getting the bulk of the work either. Instead, Young has been coming up with several big plays in the passing game, and to guys like Ahmard Hall and Craig Stevens no less.
And remember: Jeff Fisher and Norm Chow badly wanted Matt Leinart instead of Vince Young. Not that anyone is willing to admit that anymore. They WERE willing to pretend that Fisher wanted Jay Cutler but was blocked by Adams. That is, until Cutler continued to be the guy who piles up INTs and loses every game that counts that he was at Vanderbilt, and is now on his 2nd team and will soon be on his 3rd NFL head coach.
Not saying that VY is an elite passer or anything. But he has gotten better. Which is precisely what the Merril Hoge/Jim Wyatt/Paul Kuharsky mafia said would never happen. Just 12 months ago, these people were claiming that Young was incapable of ever getting better, and that the Titans shouldn’t even give him playing time in hopes of trading him.
Vince has played 6 series.
Also, you’re missing that in those, 2 included three and outs (last night) and one interception the week before.
You make a fair point
Preseason doesn’t mean a whole lot but you don’t want to see your 1st team offense struggle either.
I rememeber how bad we looked last year in the preseason and we went on to lose the first 6 games, so I think it’s alright to feel better about how our 1st team offense looks.
Just a question
i’ve been following MCM for a about 9 months and haven’t posted yet but i suppose no time better than the present I am wondering how James Joseph is doing in camp last he looked like he was getting up field and getting off blocks does he have a chance in DT rotation? with the way fisher likes to rotate multiple players there?
I haven't heard anything about Joseph
And we’re pretty deep at DT: Brown, J. Jones, Haye, Marks, and that rookie Howard. I think his best shot will be the practice squad.
It was awesome
but he shouldn’t do that too much. That’s a good way to get a terrible, terrible injury. I hurt just thinking about it.

it could the PLAY Of The OFFSEASON
Hawkins was a WR STARTER before the catch in my eyes & he should at least be our 4th WR behind Britt by week 1.
Nate W. improved his catching. Good for him! Gage disappointed me as usual. I think Gage’s job is to be the smokescreen for the opponent’s best CB & isolate him all game.

Wow. You have pretty strict standards.
Gage didn’t even play and disappointed you!

I guess he wasn't supporting morale enough from the bench.
10. 28. 18. Let the season begin.

Gage was listening to his Ipod in the bench with his head down and looks suicidal

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.

Can't help it. I do my best to stay as objective as possible, but that's some pretty compelling stuff.
How many of those wins
couldn’t have been won by Billy Volek?

Billy Volek wouldn't have had as good of a record as Vince as a starter. Much like Kerry (.500) has an inferior record to Vince as well.
But by how many games?

Let's break it down by year.
In 2006, I think Volek could have won 3 games.
In 2007, 9 games.
2008, 12 games.
2009, 6 games.
This is assuming that Volek started every game during Vince’s time here (including Kerry’s starts).
That gives Volek a record of 30-34.

To elaborate, I can't help myself.
I saw a BIG progression in Vince last preseason that I think others here quickly dismissed since he had fallen out of grace with the fans/organization. That’s neither here nor there, but the point is that I see an even bigger jump this year. Footwork, pre snap reads, check downs, etc., it’s all better than it was last year.
That has me excited, because it’s no secret that he’s the “x factor” as to how well this team will perform this season. If he excels, this offense could be elite.
Nope I saw it last preseason too
and did not dismiss it, and I’m not a VY fanboy by any stretch of the imagination. He looked more confident passing than he ever had up to that point last preseason. I wasn’t clamoring for him to start, though.
Something happened during that offseason. He improved dramatically.
Looks better this year too, but it’s not as big a jump as it was going into last preseason.
Yeah, I remember when VY started as a rookie....
he was really more of a running back. But this year, he looks poised in the pocket, taking what the defense gives him….overall, much more mature than before. I think going 8-2 at the end of last year gave him alot of confidence, a sort of swagger if you will. That doesn’t mean he still won’t run, it just means he’s much smarter about how & when to do it now.

You blew it, man.
I was just about to post the same stat (no kidding), so I could have run cover for you, and your new reputation would still be in tact. Alas, alack
