Tennessee Titans Morning Links: The Ballad Of Stafon Johnson Edition
LeGarrette Blount has been excused form team activities for two days for unspecified personal reasons. Perhaps the biggest suprise of Saturday night (outside of Jason Jones starting over Sen'Derrick Marks) was that Blount was used a so little after there was so much excitement over his camp performances. Blount ended up with only 5 rushes for 4 yards, so maybe these issues were in play on Saturday night... who knows.
Chris Johnson fell 99 yards short of Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record last year, but that might not have been the case without a holding call on Ahmard Hall that nullified a 62-yard touchdown run. Now, Ed Hochuli has gone out of his way to apologize to Hall, who was called for the hold, and describing the call as a 'mistake'. It's a very classy move from one of the league's most recognizable refs. Hochuli explained that he got a very low grade in the evaluations for that game due mostly to that call. I can understand why since the hold was behind the runner and didn't have any affect on the play.
Rusty Smith had an up and down performance in his first preseason game, and it was definitely a learning experience for the rookie. Still, you saw the arm strength, the poise and the physical skills that made him worth the draft pick. and make him a worthy prospect for Mike Heimerdinger to spend the next few years grooming ala Billy Volek in the early 2000's.
Follow us through the jump for news on Derrick Morgan...
Derrick Morgan has his sights set on playing next Monday Night when the Cardinals come to town, but look for the next week as the more likely date for his debut. Morgan is also switching his jersey number, and will most likely take Jevon Kearse's old number 90.
The Titans say we'll see more of Kerry Collins next week when the Titans appear in the Monday Night Preseason timeslot. I'm all for whatever it takes for me to have to watch less Chris Simms.
So we're all in agreement that Vince tucks the ball and runs for the 1st down during the regular season rather than attempt that pass that was picked off, correct? I mean, there's no question in my mind.
Any hope Stafon Johnson had of making the roster and playing this year went poof on Saturday night when he dislocated his ankle, sprained his ankle and broke his fibula all on one hit. It's a horrible turn of luck for Johsnon, who had come a long way to get back to this point after nearly losing his life in a weight lifting accident at USC. Hopefully Johnson stays strong, rehabs like he needs to and is ready to go next season.

Rusty Smith needs to be getting most of the reps. We know what we’ve got with Kerry and Chris. I guess my point is that Kerry should be running the #2 offense. But, they shouldn’t limit Smith’s reps in favor of Chris Simms.

Yup. It was still a bad throw though, telegraphed the whole way.
Side note. No doubt, it was a bad throw. Gage gave up on his route, though, too. There’s no way he would have caught the ball, but I think if he was committed to the route he could have forced an incompletion. Small nuances like this add up to make the difference between an average receiver and a great one.
Gage and Washington scare the hell out of me.
No way they are the best we have. If they are, we’re in trouble.

Yup. Hopefully Williams can produce.
*Obligatory Longhorn plug. Did anyone else see the Bengals game last night? Jordan Shipley is the real deal both on punt returns and as a receiver. He’ll be a force in year 1 as a slot receiver. Just something to keep in mind, because he was still on the board when we took Williams in round 3.
*Obligatory Longhorn bash
We have Chris Simms.

I want and hope to see Britt in the No.1 spot soon

If Britt doesn’t emerge as the apparent starter…this season will be a major letdown…unless the other receivers step up

I would even put Hawkins in over those two right now.
I know I am a Fisher basher on the reg, but the fact that we are the only team who can’t get young receivers on the field just astounds me.

I’d love to see him get more playing time, its about time we see whether he can cut it or not.

Yup. Can this coaching staff develop a receiver? Ever?
You want to point the finger at Reinfeldt or his predecessor Floyd Reese. But, at some point, this is on the coaching staff as well. Best I can tell, Fred Graves hasn’t coached up a player in his time here. Maybe Bobby Wade and Drew Bennett, but that’s a stretch.
Fish and company like to maintain that it’s the players fault that he can’t see the field. That door swings both ways, though. If you’ve got talent, you find a way to get them on the field, much like Minnesota did with Percy Harvin last year. It’s back to the premise that in many respects you need to design the offense around your players.

Yessir. If our “scheme” is too complicated for young players to figure out, well, we need to change it, cause it ain’t workin’.

Check this out.
Link here. The Arizona game skews the data a little bit. Then again, these players were big role players in that game as well, so that counts for something, too.
Leaders on our team in win probability added per play: Hawkins, Britt, Cook.
Leaders on our team in expected points added per play: Britt, Hawkins Scaife.
Britt and Hawkins both led in yards per target and yards per reception.
Hawkins only played in 10 games last year. The sample size is small. Still his success warrants much more playing time.
Don't forget about Mariani...
I’m predicting this kid is going to be a great receiver for us. You heard it here first!!
by titansfan4ever on Aug 16, 2010 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions
I like Mariani
But sadly i doubt he gets much time this year. Britt will eventually be number 1, with washington at 2. Gage wil be 3(sadly) and hopefully hawk rotating at 4. If he gets his chances, i know the hawk wll soar. The question is will fish give him a chance? Gage is like the Kerry Collins of our wr core. He’s experienced and stable but you can’t expect him to make plays when the game is down to crunch time. Basically he isn’t a playmaker. Hawk has playmaker ability. Him in the slot with washington is just more speed than fisher can handle.
I am not in agreement with that statement at all. I will refer back to the last time
the Seahawks faced the Titans, last game of last year. VY did not play well in that game at all. He threw for 0 td and 1 INT then. I will say he looked sharp in the opening drive of this game, but to say that he would have made a better decision when he elected to throw the ball just doesn’t make sense. He isn’t out there in a preseason game to purposely take dumb chances in hopes of a big play. Everyone realizes these games don’t count for statistics sake, but no one wants to go out and look bad on any play. Just ask Mouton about that .
Yes It Does Make Sense
In a regular season game, Young RISKS INJURY by running the football, which is what he does best. In a preseason game that doesn’t count, he tries to make a play throwing the football, which he is still learning how to do. See, Vince Young isn’t Chris Simms or Kerry Collins. They are already as good at throwing the football as they will ever get. Young can get better throwing the football just like Steve Young, Brett Favre and John Elway did. But in order to get better, he needs more reps, better coaching, and better players around him, and more time under center so his decision-making can improve. Only people who believe that it is a waste of time because they think that he is going to ultimately fail anyway don’t want to see that happen.
The truth is that the early years of Vince Young’s career were wasted. His “offensive coordinator” was the immensely unqualified Norm Chow, and what is more, Jeff Fisher forced Chow to use Fisher’s playbook, not Chow’s. (Heimerdinger is running his own playbook.) And Fisher had Young throwing to people like Eric Moulds, Roydell Williams, Brandon Jones, Ben Troupe and handing off to LenDale White, Chris Henry and Chris Brown. And then there was the fiasco where Young rode the bench for a season and a half where Kerry Collins led the Titans to the same place that he led the Panthers, Saints and Raiders … nowhere. If Young is being coached by a competent offensive coordinator with better players around him, he’d be a lot further along than he is right now.
Folks who prefer losing with Kerry Collins (because that’s all Collins has ever done) to a shot at winning with Young really mystify me. You really do.
Wrong again, Lurking
Collins did win with the Giants…but…that was a looooong time ago. But I like the ideal of having an experienced veteran to back up VY. Plus, VY has that intangible thing that’s hard to describe…he’s a winner (cue VY running in for game winning TD in college championship game against USC now, please)….and that’s something that can’t be taught…you either have it …or you don’t.

Ok Joy kat
this is getting to the point where you sound stupid and it is obvious you hate VY. Rusty Smith was making risky throws the whole time he was in and most of them were to Britt and Britt was fighting for position and winning which resulted in several completions. Lets face it Gage was overpowered and he is getting up there in age not to mention he is not much of a speedy threat on the outside.Thank God VY threw the pick or else he might have ended up with a freak injury like Stafon Johnson! You hate VY so much I’m sure you missed the spectacular 99 yrd drive against the Cardinals he orchestrated. What is sad is VY’s biggest hater Merril Hodge admitted VY is a much better QB than he originally thought after that game yet you continue with the bull@%#$! If VY single handedly wins the SuperBowl I’m absolutely positive you’ll come up with some moronic excuse of why he had nothin to do with it. Remember all your doing by continuing with this unrealistic critizism is making yourself look like a complete fool/idiot/moron/anyone who ignores facts despite them unraveling right before their eyes.
Re: Stafon Johnson
Actually, Fishers has been quoted as saying he could be healthy again in 8-12 weeks and leaving open the possibility he could still play this year.
I think he's just being nice with that...
but who knows. If they think he’s worth it, why not give him a shot. They can’t hide him on the PUP list since he’s been practicing. My guess is the best shot he has is to rehab on the practice squad and maybe get activated later.

fyi
there is a difference between “weight bearing as tolerated” and fully healed.
I just got out of surgery (i sell the orhtopedic implants used to fix broken bones)
the surgeon confirmed that it would be 6 months before he could clear a running back to full duty. mainly because it was an “ankle fracture / dislocation” it takes a long time for all of the soft tissues / ligaments/ and joint capsule to get back to normal.
I know I said “bones dont heal that fast” but i was being lazy and didnt feel like typing all of the above. :) haha sorry
sounds like you did have a good recovery though IceOne….thats kewl.

If there is a preseason.......
If there is a preseason in 2011, The Titans in a game will due the fake punt. All possible 2011 preseason opponents be fore warned. :D
You Hope That Stafon Johnson Is Ready To Go Next Season? Why?
Johnson in the last calendar year alone has nearly died in a weightlifting accident and has suffered a broken ankle, dislocated ankle and broken fibula. You do realize that we are talking about an undrafted free agent making the league minimum who wasn’t even a dominant player in college (check his stats, 1550 yards rushing in 4 seasons and it isn’t as if he was playing behind a Jamal Lewis or even a Travis Henry at USC; if he hadn’t gotten hurt his senior year he MAY have reached 800 rushing yards)? USC’s passing game hasn’t been the same since Norm Chow left. They could have badly used a Reggie Bush-LenDale White type of dominant running game. If Johnson had that type of ability, USC would have used it to get to a couple more national title games instead of giving the guy who didn’t go to LSU because he was scared of SEC defenses (Joe McKnight) chance after chance to fail.
Instead of rooting for a guy who isn’t exactly going to get rich playing pro football to put his body through even more abuse, you ought to be hoping that Johnson parlays his USC education into a good life after football, which hopefully will begin immediately. And as for the Titans, I really hope that they can find a #2 RB in next year’s draft (and that this pick isn’t wasted on another Chris Henry, Chris Brown or LenDale White) because someone who can both complement CJ2K and take his place in the starting lineup if CJ2K gets banged up isn’t on this roster. Ringer and Blount are good options for 3rd RB (or at least they would be if they played special teams), but 2nd RB, especially since one is a rookie and another a 2nd year guy who barely played last year.
The Titans’ refusal to pick up a veteran free agent RB this offseason was simply astounding. I guess signing Jason Babin was a much bigger priority. So was holding onto Dave Ball I guess.
Seriously August
What is wrong with you?!?!?!?!?!??

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
Stafon Johnson was a guy the coaches liked
and if you can’t root for a kid who’s overcome what he’s overcome then maybe you need to look in the mirror for a little while. We’ve got plenty of depth with Ringer and Blount, so why would they go out and sign a depth running back when it’s probably the easiest position in the NFL to fill with a rookie?
Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.
Wrong
USC has been loaded with 4/5 star prospects that we had 5 really good RBs on the team whom all pretty much got to touch the ball so you really can’t look to his stats. USC passing game has nothing to do with Norm Chow as much as it had to do with whom Chow had to play with (i.e. UCLA ain’t that good of a passing team with Chow as OC the last few years). I’m not saying by any means that Johnson is elite or anything but give the guy a chance you never know what you can get from a guy who has overcome so much to play the sport he loves.

I actually thought
Stefon looked pretty good before the injury… Is there a certain number of IR spots or something that can be used? I don’t know the whole deal with it… Is he going to be added to IR or does he just go down as a cut? I would much rather have him IR’d than cut.
by Big Bad Bulluck on Aug 16, 2010 2:44 PM CDT reply actions
Well
from my knowledge you have unlimited IR spots but once placed on IR Stefon cannot practice with the team until the season is over.
USC > UT (Both of them)
Correct
He can be IR’ed but if he is he can’t practice (not a problem for the next couple of months at least). He can, however, do conditioning work at the team’s facilities and attend team meetings. He could not return to the practice field until the end of the season (AKA the first organized activities during the offseason).
He cannot be placed on the PUP list because he has already participated in practices. Either IR or PUP would mean he’s not on the active roster.
Cutting him with an injury settlement payment and hoping he’s available next season is obviously an option, but there’s no guarantees there.
The Practice Squad could be an option as well.

No we all aren’t in agreement that VY wouldn’t have thrown that pass in the Regular season.
Really?
All the times during his career that he has run for a first down or even a TD does not give you any indication that he’s in running on that play during the season?

Can't you read? Let me explain to you again.
Since VY is being here one thing he has done very well is run the ball. Many times during the season, and seasons before, when the team need to move the chains (That means run for a first down), he has done it. So with the body of evidence clearly show that him running for a first down during the season is a clear possibility. If you want I can use bigger letters and colors.

They don't
for the most part. Vince was in for 2 drives. They give a few reps to the starters and then let the backups play. The few reps are to get the starters back into the swing of a semi-full paced game and then the backups get game time experience to get better. If you can’t see that, then this must be your first season watching NFL Preseason.
What do we do if somehow Colt McCoy ends up on an NFL team starting against Vince Young?

Your Welcome
It very important to give you encouragement so not to stunt you development as a human being.

I am a VY Fan..
but he did take off and run one on the first drive (i think it was the first) and made a good slide to avoid getting hit, that was a smart decision. He showed he could avoid the hit so that shouldn’t be the excuse for not running it on the second drive, the decision to throw does concern me but I think he will learn from that and know where the first down mark is next time. Learning from mistakes is what the preseason is for.
I'm no super-genius... or are I?
So, do we or don't read much into it because is preseason?
One thing to remember is we don’t know what it is exactly the coaching staff is looking for in this games. So a play we deem very important the coaches don’t think to much about it and the other way around.

Lets just call it a horrible throw
be thankful it was in the preseason, and hope he got it out of his system.
We tend to blow the preseaon out of proportion, two years ago the only team to finish 4-0 in the preseason was Detroit. and they went on to go 0-16.
It likely means nothing

Hold up
Don’t you think VY learned from that first run (where he NEARLY GOT JACKED UP) enough to not risk injury running for 1st downs in the PRE-SEASON? and it wasn’t on the first drive btw. Vince will throw about 10-15 interceptions this year, maybe 1 a game, i dont know. But he would most definitely have ran, instead of throwing the pick in a regular season game. (not to sound too biased, but the errant throw was probably due to him thinking – “I’m going to run, no, its pre-season, im going to pass”- You don’t run for first downs in a pre-season game unless you are Tim Tebow :)
as long as we were at some point discussing stafon johnson
Ill throw in my two cents. How COULD we get rid of him? What’s a spot on the practice squad compared to how we’ll be ripped apart for cutting one of the most inspirational comeback stories in recent memory? He was in a very deep, very talented backfield with at least 2 NFL talents (obviously, mcknight and stafon) so stats aren’t reliable in this case considering there were, what, 5 runningbacks who got the ball regulalrly? I know that you don’t get into pro football to make friends, but I just think that the benefits of keeping him on outweigh the negative press of putting him off.

Keep on the roster?
Lame duck on the 53 roster? Why? They will put him on IR when no one else takes him on waivers. Fish already said that is what they plan to do.
