Then...

why watch this season? Or do you have a 2nd team (like in the NFC) to keep you from getting depressed?

Where do you see the record for the season? 8-8? Mind doing a game by game W/L prediction (won’t hold you to it once the season starts since this is before training camp, etc)?

Personally, I can see the Titans going 10-6 or even 11-5.

I was optimistic last year

And I get sick when the team does so bad.

(I most likely probably definitely have an unhealthy attachment to my sports teams)

So I have decided to go totally pessimistic. I say 4 and 12. If they do better, I will dance in my seat at LP. If they don’t….awww who am I kidding, I will still be sick.

Personally

I’d prefer a group of team first guys who play together and win vs a bunch of individuals who when they play together are amazing but when they don’t are just a disaster.

I’m a lifelong Saints fan who moved up here and now enjoy the Titans too, and I’d much prefer the attitude the Saints have over some of the current Titans. Even before Super Bowl they were a group of team guys. Outside of Brees, there aren’t any “stars” and as good as Drew is, you never here stuff like this from him.

Now, I don’t care if Johnson gets paid or not, as a fan, I don’t care about contracts. I just want him on the field doing what he does best and helping the team win. Of course he is underpaid relative to the rest of the league, but compared to mine, its a ton of money so I have no sympathy for his plight or need for his selfishness. He will get his money once he honors what he signed up for.

by Jimmy on Jul 8, 2010 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not a Blame Fish guy

I have serious concerns about whether Fisher has the right viewpoint to build a successful team at the front-office level, and I was concerned he’d screw up when Reese got fired, but beyond that I think Fish has done about as well as you can reasonably expect. Moreover, I think it’d be very difficult, if not impossible, to get a coach would could come in and have the same sort of long-term success.

But Roos said it in an interview on the official site in December: sure, it’d be nice to get CJ 2000 yards, but if the team doesn’t make the playoffs, it really doesn’t mean much. Yes, it was nice to see CJ have a lot of success running in 2009. It would have been just as nice to see him with 50 fewer carries and 200-300 fewer rushing yards.

It’s nice to set records, I recognize that, cool and all that. NFL running backs, though, have a limited shelf life and don’t respond well to overuse, and Fish pissed away some of CJ’s career for prestige and individual goals. Now, it’s coming back to bite him and the rest of team management in the rear. As a fan of the Titans who wants them to go 19-0 and win every game 74-0, you bet I’m annoyed.

If you want, I can dig up some a link or two to some of my in-season kvetching about CJ setting or tying his career high for carries in a game like 5 straight games.

Funny how...

I don’t remember you posting here during game 16 last season cheering for the Seahawks defense to stop CJ so that we could re-sign him on the cheap. You were probably celebrating the record with every other Titans fan, but now that he wants more money, you’re saying Jeff Fisher is stupid for letting him get the record? Hilarious.

Hell, we shouldn’t want ANY Titans to make the Pro Bowl. Mediocrity all around! Our players will be less likely to hold out and ask for bigger paychecks if they’re not performing well!

I can’t believe the stupidity that I’m seeing on this forum today. Un-freaking-believable.

by DoofusOfErasmus on Jul 8, 2010 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

You're right

I think my exact statement was “Fisher better let him get the record or this season will be a complete waste.”

And I would have been furious if he had thrown the ball 50 times and kept CJ on the sideline.

But, you know what? Hindsight is 20/20. And if I had known then what kind of me first greedy piece of trash Johnson is, I would have been against it then as well.

I don’t understand the “give him what he wants” way of thinking. Why are we the dumbasses? Who is gonna be the dumbass when he comes back in 2 years and wants more? Are you gonna give it to him then? What if he runs for 1900 this year and we still don’t make the playoffs (which we won’t)? Will he not deserve it then?

At some point somebody has to hold these greedy assholes’ feet to the fire. He signed the contract. Nobody forced him to. Why don’t we just sign everybody to a $1 contract and then pay them for what they do?

Base salary is only a small part of the equation. No back up running back got the money CJ did up front.

you don't sign

you don’t play. and guess what? if CJ doesn’t play, the Titans lose.
Ways they (or “you” since it’s your money) lose:

1) teams can play a safer D vs. Young and whatever RB trots out there. This increases the chances for the Titans to lose.
2) the organization gets a rep for not paying players for performance. No more good FAs (not that the team is a destination for many at the moment).
3) the organization loses the positive attention that CJ brings from casual fans, fantasy football, & Madden. They become yet another small-market afterthought of a team that is just another team that the Colts have to play a couple times.
4) after all this, the team (err, I mean Gramsey) starts to lose money directly as interest wanes in the organization.

I don’t care what these guys do when their contracts run out. If 53 doesn’t like what the Titans are offering then he is free to look elsewhere, that is his prerogative. I don’t like it when that happens, but that is the nature of the beast.

What pisses me off, however, is when guys sign contracts of their own free will, and then arbitrarily decide that it’s not good enough anymore and pull this holdout crap. I don’t care what you or anyone else says, it is hurting the team, play schemes and chemistry for CJ to not be in camp. That is a given. Honor the contract you signed. If it makes you mad…walk away when your time is up. I don’t get mad when players don’t give hometown discounts and shit like that. Just don’t holdout.

McNair got paid $50 mil AS A ROOKIE and for not playing the first 2 years. That’s an awesome argument you just made. I mean, it’s TOTALLY relevant to CJ’s contract dispute.

1. That was clearly a joke.

2. If we did TRADE him for comparable quality, I wouldn’t be opposed.
3. Since CJ has started demanding money, he hasn’t mentioned the O-line once. Most good RB’s would get at least 1500 yards with that O-line and that many carries anyways.

by sm00thBlue on Jul 9, 2010 12:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Ohio is right

CJ is implying he is on another level of hungriness. Meaning he wants all the attempts, carries, receptions, targets, ball-hogging he can get.

“FEEL-FREE-TO-HATE” implies he wants you to hate him. He wants small-minded people to think he is greedy, which will force the F.O. to wait even longer on this compromise; which will increase his holdout period. He knows the longer the holdout continues, the bigger contract he will receive. If he was a player who has already received a huge contract and been in the league awhile like TO, Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNiel. Well the holdout only decreases his contract. Everyone can say he has no leverage at this point over the F.O. But I believe he is getting everything he wants, except all of his fans on his side.

This is business ppl, nothing to do with the TEAM. When our GM trades or releases players, nobody cares then. But when a player makes a stand, he gets ridiculed for it. CJ deserves it, Haynesworth needs to be cut!

by Preds 101 on Jul 8, 2010 11:39 AM CDT reply actions

Who cares if he tweets selfish things?

a) He’s an RB who gets his number called all day by Fish. His desire for touches will never be a distraction.
b) He’s never shown anything short of max effort and a love for the game of football.
c) He’s got a legitimate beef: short earning window, integral to the team, underpaid relative to NFL offensive stars. But he’s got minimal leverage and if he doesn’t get it, his agent does. So there’s no doomsday scenario here, no reason to fret about a CJ-less Titans.
d) Titans shouldn’t pay him market value right now, but they should give him a nice bump in salary for the workload alone. He’s being asked to take a workload that very likely could diminish his abilities later in his career or curtail his time in the league. There’s nothing wrong in doing right by a player who has exceeded expectations and become far more important and heavily used than the team imagined when they drafted him.
e)This idea of shutting up, honoring the contract, and playing is naive w/r/t the way NFL contracts work, the demands of the position and its limited earnings window, CJ’s performance/pay relative to everyone in his locker room and league, and the developments since CJ signed the contract (i.e. huge workload and MVP caliber performance).

LeBron James shouldn’t be making the same salary as a guy sitting on the bench for the L.A. Clippers. If you just need any old running back, re-sign LenDale and let’s get on with it. We saw what happened in the playoff game against the Ravens the difference that having CJ makes. Pretty safe to say that he deserves big money.

by DoofusOfErasmus on Jul 8, 2010 2:17 PM CDT reply actions

I agree with your logic

but its not necessarily doable with the current structure of how rookie contracts are done. The Titans took the bulk of the risk in giving him 12 million based on no NFL production a couple of years ago when they signed him. I agree, he’s outperformed his deal and he should not be paid as a back up RB who had a better agent or is on a veteran deal. But a renegotiation 40% of the way through a contract is not a fair thing either. I know as a contractor, I can’t negotiate on my rate until I’m through with what I agreed to accomplish. Break down the timeline and it would be like me asking for a raise in April or May of a calendar year. Just doesn’t happen.

What they should do is get a handle on how they pay rookies so that you don’t get a guy like Bradford or Jamarcus who is unproven in the pros making 40mil guaranteed and a guy like Johnson making less than he’s proven to be worth. Make it a 3 year deal? Make it more incentive laden as a rookie, something like that.

What bothers me the most as a fan is I don’t care about if CJ gets paid. I care if he shows up, helps the team, and Bud keeps ticket prices down and the Logan’s hamburgers at LP Field reasonably priced so I can afford to buy a beer with my lunch. Let the dollars and cents stuff be taken care of behind closed doors so I don’t have to feel that I am being cheated by the guy whose jersey I like to wear on Sunday.

The guy plays a sport

and for the rest of his life due to the money he’s made will never have to worry about paying for diapers, car notes, meals, credit cards and mortgages (just to name a few). Many of use would surely trade predicaments.

Like I said, I care that he shows up and gives me someone to cheer for on Sunday afternoon. Me personally, I have a hard time cheering for a guy that whines about what he deserves based on how hard he works and what he’s accomplished.

Reminds me of “Do you know how much insurance on a Ferrari costs mother ….?”

Of course this is TOTALLY my opinion and how I feel about professional athletes. That’s why I love golf, you make what you make based on how well you play.

by benbp on Jul 8, 2010 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

LOL

Well, that’s the nature of professional sports. If you think it’s all about overpriced athletes, no one’s forcing you to buy a jersey or a ticket or a $4 bottle of Evian at the stadium.

by DoofusOfErasmus on Jul 8, 2010 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey man

It’s just my opinion. I know this is a business, but I just prefer my players to conduct themselves more Manning, Brees, McNair, Aikmen (insert others). No need to get personal on this, I just thought Johnson was different. He’s not, no big deal, i won’t be wearing his jersey.

My point was, you might be all “I’m so underpaid”, but work that out on the business side. That mess doesn’t need to filter into the game side of things which is the reason I watch. I don’t watch a business, I watch a game.

I’m not naive to how this works, I just prefer to pull for guys and teams that handle things differently than how he is.

then...

ignore the offseason.
seriously, if you care only about the games, then why give this any attention?
it happens every year and to all teams.

playing the media to add pressure to the Front Office is one of the ways to get what they want.

by oilertitan on Jul 8, 2010 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

The offseason

Is not just about contracts and deals. OTAs, training camp and the draft are a part of it too. But fair enough oilertitan, like I said, it’s just my opinion and I wanted to join the conversation.

Hopefully this gets resolved quickly and we are back to talking football and not business stuff.

by benbp on Jul 8, 2010 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not only your opinion.

I agree with you. And I have no problem with CJ wanting something that he’s clearly earned, but I say, do it in a more professional manner.

by J3G77 on Jul 8, 2010 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed.

The business side is petty filler for the offseason. Too bad all the other major sports don’t do anything for me. Ugh.

by oilertitan on Jul 8, 2010 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I've been a golfer all my life

so I guess the majors during the summer do it for me which is nice. Cool that we can reach an agreement though on it.

I hate how some sports media has gone the way of sensationalism like a great deal of the mainstream media in a lot of respects. We need something like NPR, but for sports. I think there is a market for it! :)

I completely understand the NFL is a business

That is the exact reason why teams don’t just give players whatever they want when they want it.

What the fuck are you talking about?

So it's okay for management to treat it like a business,

but not players? CJ is well within his right to negotiate for a better deal, yet this somehow seems strange or unreasonable to you.

by SouthTexasTitan on Jul 8, 2010 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

My 2 cents

After reading the tweet a couple of times, I am willing to give CJ the benefit of the doubt that what he meant was he is aiming to do better next season.

As for his contract situation, I think it’s only fair the titans restructure his contract to get a higher pay this year and then maybe give him a new contract next year. Win-win for everybody.

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.

by Jimmy on Jul 8, 2010 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

This is how I read it too...

That he wants to have a better season. And that it is a warning to everyone who opposes him or tries to stop him.

I think everyone is jumping the gun here. Until we know what happens or what agreement is reached, we can’t judge.

Personally I will give the benefit of the doubt to Chris Johnson. He deserves it. The way I see it is that he used this whole “hold out” “I want 40 mil” to add pressure to Fisher that he is not joking around. But if he settles with the signing bonus (that seems to be what is happening) doesn’t that show you that he is still willing to prove himself to earn a new contract next year? It shows that all he wanted was reward for going above and beyond expectations and that he will be at it again next year to prove he is worthy of that huge contract he wants.

Until things change and he ends up refusing what the FO is offering and he ends up holding out, there is no reason to believe he is a me-first vs. a team-first kind of guy. We are his fans and this is our team and I think out everyone, we should be having a “innocent until proven guilty” attitude.

Sure.

Why should they put their remaining years of their lives at risk (through loss of body movement, brain usage [concussions], etc) for less than they believe they are worth?

They have every right (see Runyan, John, McNair, Steve and currently Bulluck, Keith) to ask for more money or test the open market.

What’s wrong about that?

by oilertitan on Jul 8, 2010 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep!!!

They all had something to do with it So yeah. They all Deserve a Pay Raise! You don’t want the player to be greedy but you want the team to be??? How can you judge that man for wanting more money. They are risking their life out there short term and long term… They all deserve a pay raise to make a long story short! and it will be OK!

Exactly!

To be honest I believe people are taking this quote outta context! I believe he is talking about his production… Some people work hard until they accomplish their goals then relax… What I believe he is saying is that he won’t let up and Work just as hard as he did last year… ex. being Hungry and getting a bite of that food and saying I’m not ever gonna be Hungry again I’m gonna keep Eating… Instead of Being Hungry Getting a Bite then saying I"m Full and gonna Lay down Now.. Wake Me Up Later. LoL!!!

CJ just needs to take the compromise everyone is talking about

bottom line. He should be happy the Titans are willing to do that! He’s acting like 2.5 million dollars isn’t a lot of money. Yes, he ran for 2006 yards so he deserves more money but he needs to just wait and then he will get his huge deal after the season.. talk about “GREEDY”.

by trevor2013 on Jul 9, 2010 3:13 AM CDT reply actions

I'm still happy with our so called "greedy" RB on our roster...

Since some of you are not happy with his recent actions. Which player would you be after in store for CJ’s Services through a trade. Here is my top 5.

1. LB Patrick Willis (switch to 3/4 D)
2. Ed Reed (yes S, move Griffin to CB)
3. CB Nnamdi Asomugha
4. DT Kevin Williams
5. CB Revis Island: (Revis/ Or Nnamdi combined with Cort could be a great tandem)
