Tennessee Titans Morning Links: AP? I'm A Reuters Man Myself Edition
I got my ESPN The Magazine in the mail yesterday, and there's a big fantasy football 'revelations' article (In$ider only) that immediately caught my attention (and not just because they also use CJ2K to refer to Chris Johnson). There are two points of note that are relevant to Titans fans:
1) "AP is mightier than CJ2K". In this section the authors utilize a lot of "Dick Cheney logic" (compiling inane data that was obviously assembled with the purpose of validating an opinion you already had before looking at any objective facts). If you want to make this argument, just say that CJ2K's year was so historic it's unwise to bank on him doing anything close to it again... and find a league format where fumbles and RB receiving yards don't count.
2) On the upside, though, is this gem:
5. VINCE YOUNG IS A TOP-10 QB
Don't believe Young has what it takes to be a fantasy starter? Believe this: In Weeks 8 to 15 last season, the Titan racked up 119 points. Prorate that over a full 16-game schedule and it ranks Young in the top 10 at his position in 2009. So there.
Justin Gage is healthy and ready to drop easy passes while reeling in circus catches. Seriously though, Gage broke his back (literally) making that crazy catch against the 49ers last year, and the injury pretty much derailed his whole season, understandably. Now a more physically sound Gage is setting his sights on a career year, most likely with the hope of renegotiating his contract next off-season, when he'll be heading into the final year of his 4 year $14 million contract.
Follow us through the jump... or don't. Whatever...
John Glennon writes that the Titans have joined the growing NFL trend of doing away with archaic two-a-day practices. There will still be a few of them, but the extra time will just be morning special teams sessions rather than full-blown practices.
Tony Brown talked with Paul K about how former 49ers DE/DT Bryant Young taught him how to prepare and compete like a professional during his short stint with the team.
Derrick Morgan makes the cut of defensive rookies to keep an eye on if you're playing fantasy football in a league with defensive players. Also, I'm playing such a league for the first time this year, so if anyone has any tips please leave them in the comments!
Here's video via ESPN of Jason McCourty previewing the Titans' season and talking about Vince Young's 'emerging' leadership... it's still confounding that he's 'emerging' as a leader 5 years after being drafted no. 3 overall, but I guess it's better late than never.
A Warren Moon effort with the Oilers from the old Run n' Gun days was picked as the most impressive single-game passing performance in NFL history by ESPN. Oilertitan has the link in the fanposts.
Stephanie Stradley has burning questions about the AFC South. I think there's an over the counter ointment for that.

CJ2K
I’m glad someone else noticed the useless statistics ESPN The Magazine used against CJ. They did the same kinda stuff through the rest of their fantasy advice….like how you should avoid QBs over 30, since 30 is the cursed age. Watch out for Thomas Jones and Ricky Williams (even though they’re a couple of yrs past 30 and did well in those years).
Regardless of how well Vince Young is going to be this coming year, seeing the prorated numbers from his partial season last year was quite impressive. I didn’t realize he did that. It’s getting me pumped for pre-season.
IDP's
It is all about getting DB’s who double as kick/punt returners, even if your league doesnt give points for return yards.
There are only a few DB’s who play regular time at defense, and double as returners. Some of them are:
L. McKelvin, BUF, Pacman Jones, CIN, D Manning, CHI, C. Carr, BAL, Captain Munnerlyn, CAR, TJ Rushing, IND.
Is it strange that I wish we still had Ben Hartsock?

look for linebackers who get a lot of tackles. they’re much better/more consistent than DEs that get sacks.
rec
tackles are your key stat in idp formats!! bad teams usually have one or two monster tacklers doing all the work for them

CJ vs. AP
CJs rushes will most likely decline to ~300. His receptions will go up. His TDs will probably end up in the same range and have upside if VY progresses. 1500 yards rushing, 500-600 yards receiving.
Peterson is the guy I’d be careful with for fantasy purposes; they didn’t draft Gerhart to be a 3rd down back, he’ll get some goal line touches.

i got vince young in like the 9th or 10th round
I don’t know how much ill use him since I also have peyton manning (fantasy is the only time I ever like manning) but VY’s performance last year shows promise for this year so long as he stays healthy. It should be easier for him to complete passes espeicially down the field as so many defenders stay in the box to stop CJ2K. VY and CJ have the recipe for great offense, they just have to make it happen.

TRUST ME
I am drafting Vince as my starter/ back-up this year to compete against Flacco/ Ryan/ Campbell/ or Kolb. Vince is by far the BEST FANTASY BACKUP to have this year. And on more Sundays than not when CJ2K & Ringer are getting stuffed he will be worth a starting fantasy QB!
You can draft him late & get lots of other fantasy studs in the first 8 rounds.

little known fact:
Vince’s full legal name is actually “The Houston Texans Sr.”, but to the Texans franchise, he simply goes by “Daddy”.

Sorry to get off topic
I realize how long the offseason seems to be getting at this point in time. 10 more days, stay strong. In the mean time, I would like to invite you all (the invitation will go out to the rest of the Division as well) to come joins us over at our place of refuge and maybe talk some divisional football. What is going to go well? What has you feeling positive about this year? What are your concerns? Us Colts fans are getting bored and would really love to hear some new voices in the discussion (doesn’t have to be football related).
So please come on over to our new refugee camp that I promise you will be 100% BBS free. Tom Lewis the Pacers head blogger has offered us shelter.

I believe vince can be top 10
he was my fantasy starter last year for the last 5 or so weeks and i won the league.
guess it doesn’t hurt to have CJ, AP, and cedric benson in the backfield either but still…

and for defensive fantasy players
my team was as follows
DE (2): Mario Williams/Haloti Ngata
DT (2): Shaun Rogers/Darnell Dockett
LB (3): Patrick Willis/Keith Bulluck/Lamaar Woodley
S (2): Adrian Wilson/Laron Landry
CB (2): Charles Woodson/Cortland Finnegan
my number 1 piece of advice is to just go for either interceptions or tackle machines early on. patrick willis in the 9th round did me wonders. i tried for ed reed also but found out that someone had actually taken him in the 4th…so that went well. but i still obviously had woodson and finnegan’s best stuff and willis got me a shit ton of points, so whoever gets him usually has one of the highest scoring defenses. D-ends barely did shit but it’s obviously only worth going for pass rushers at that position.
